Ordering new Mac Pro. Would like some advise please.

Okay, here we go. I am a freelancer who shoots in 1080i and 720p using a JVC 700 U camera with really good glass. in a small market. So bringing the media in is a piece of cake. I do not see me going to 2K or 4k anytime soon. I produce a weekly hour long sports program and various other projects... training, docs, marketing videos, etc. Very seldom more than 4 streams on the timeline. I have a budget of around $5,000 for a new machine. Here is what I am leaning towards. I would appreciate any advice.
6 core, 32 GB ram, upgrade to D700 GPU's, 512 GB storage. I use two G-Tech 4TB Thunderbolt drives for media. I also have a Thunderbolt display. Any concerns or thoughts? You folks always have great advice so I am looking forward to your opinions.
Cheers,
Tom

Basically the FirePro D300 is a lesser version of the W7000, the D500 is a lesser version of the W8000 and the D700 a lesser version of the W9000. Interestingly the D700 (Practically a Rebrand) has not been physically disabled any further than the W9000 yet it gives about 0.5 TeraFlops less compute than the AMD FirePro W9000. Needless to say AMD’s take on efficiency is very interesting and though we dont see a market for such a series apart from Mac Pros, AMD might decide otherwise.

  • How do you new Mac Pro owners like your machine with Logic?

Don't mean to be a PITA but I need to get this right before I drop three to five grand on a new set of music tools. I'm trying to decide between Mac Pro and iMac for use with Logic. Seems there are a lot of posts regarding glitches with the new Mac Pro and Logic, whereas the posts from people with older G4s and G5s seem to indicate they are running rock solid. So you new Mac Pro folks or anyone else, please weigh in. Is the new Mac Pro "glitch heavy" or is it just a matter of tweaking the system to where it runs smooth? In general, how do you new Mac Pro folks like the way it works with Logic?

I'm mostly pleased with my MacPro 2.66. Almost no crashes with Logic, although I experience a few more bugs here and there than with my G4. Occasional CoreAudio errors, I have to restart CoreAudio if my external word clock is set to the wrong sample rate when I open a session, there seems to be a bug between high fader levels (above +4dB) and panning... little things like that.
Then again, compared to my G4, the FireWire bus is screaming fast--with most sessions, I can run a buffer of 128 samples at 96k with my MOTU 828mkII, while my G4 would sometimes glitch at 96k with 512 samples. At 96k, 256 samples, my MacPro/828mkII rig is rock-solid... I informally tested it by recording 12 test tracks simultaneously for 20 minutes, with the CPU nearly maxed out (which was difficult to do--took a bunch of Space Designers and Ultrabeats)--absolutely zero clicks or pops.
And of course, WAY more processing power than my G4.
I'm assuming that MacPro compatibility is a fairly high priority for Apple these days, so hopefully the bugs will get worked out soon. And as things are, Logic is definitely usable on a MacPro--the bugs I encounter rarely slow down my work.
So, far from perfect, but as far as new technology goes, I'd say Logic on the MacPro is above average.
    Good luck!

  • Advise please - Ordering new Mac Pro

My boss told me to order one of the new Mac Pros today. I went to the Apple store and placed a tentative order but before I send it on for payment I'm looking for a little advice from all you experts who have helped me so graciously in the past. I'll list the pre-confirgured order below. Let me know what you think. I'm looking to find out if I'm on the right track for the work I do (so I don't look stupid to the company honchos) and if the hardware is adequate. I'll buy an additional 8G of RAM (probably OWC) and transfer my current three TB hard drives from my [old] 3.0Ghz Dual Core Mac Pro over to the 3.2Ghz Quad-Core (giving me 4TB HD space altogether with a 2TB LaCie external for backup].
Primarily I do film editing using Final Cut Pro, video capturing, rendering and conversions to various media formats. I also burn a lot of sample work and pre-production DVDs. I do a lot of other stuff too but that's the lighter stuff. Here's my pre-order, hence the two SuperDrives (as well as a third LaCie USB optical drive):
    Airport Extreme card
    Two 16X SuperDrives
    Two 3.2Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    2GB (2X1GB) of RAM
    1TB 7200 RPM Serial ATA
    Accessory kit
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT w/512MB (Two dual-link DVI).
    Wireless mighty mouse and keyboard.
I have two 30" Apple HD displays to connect.
Comes in at a little under $5,000. We will pass my current Mac Pro on to the "new" guy.
    Thanks!
    Lisa

Looks good; lucky you. So there is a good reason to have a boss...
You are wise to purchase the extra RAM from OWC rather than from Apple.
Sounds like it will be a great machine; in a couple of years, though, you will probably be passing it on to the "new guy".

  • I bought cs3 when current for pc . . .now have new mac and would like to change over and upgrade . ?

I bought cs6 for pc years ago . . now have mac and would like change over and upgrade (perhaps bridge only) please advise best?

No way. You are long past any upgrade eleigibility cycles, so you would have to buy a full CS6 license or join Creative Cloud. That also negates any advise people could give you on making a platform swap, which requires you to be on a current version, anyway.

  • New to Breeze, would like some helpful info

I have a java web application built with structs. My clients
wants the ability to upload online exam and someone recommended me
look into 'Adobe Breeze' for this. I am totally new to Adobe
Breeze, I will do research, but can anyone with experience with
Breeze give me some info or feasibility on using this product with
    my app?
Maybe some sites linking JAVA with Breeze?
    Thanks so much,

    Meg-
I had to go out of town for a family emergency. I really want to get an iPod but the first 2 I had I broke and could never figure out how to get the songs on the iPod. it seems some songs I purchased fro iTunes will download and play but some will not I would like to know all the places I can get songs to play on my iPod (well, when I get one tat will work for me). I have a lot of CDs, should I get them on iTunes first. Do I look for other type of songs in various formats to install in the iPod like…oh, what are some of the formats that music can be downloaded in? mp4 all the various types I am sure you know what I am getting at.
I want the classic but I am nervous being an exerciser. I do not care for videos but if the classic allows one to play them that is OK.
I would like you to look at this ear plug store online that sell to artists for their recording, heavy duty iPod users, runners, etc. I need an awesome ear plug that will take the music to the next level but I have no idea what type will be best for me.
Let me see if I can find that website. It was something like earphone Solutions but it might not be the exact one. They have a lot of the same ear plugs.
But back to what iPod and where I can get the music. That is what I need help with ow. I do not want to pay for whole CDs, but songs that are good to workout to.
If you get a chance and look at tat ear plug website and give me your opinion on ear plugs. This is where I am lost but need a much better ear plug and one that will stay in my odd shaped ears.
Thanks for waiting. I am still with my pops in the hospital most of the time but I will get back to you.

  • New to multithreading, would like some advice

Hi guys, I currently have a project which runs in single thread mode but im thinking of implementing multi threading and im wondering if its actually worth doing. Within the project i have a group of objects held in a hash map, when any of the objects are due for an update, an update request calls a single thread which retrieves the object from the hashmap and modifies it. My plan is to create a thread pool which will handle all the update requests independently.
So assume i have three objects in my hashmap A, B and C (in reality this could be 20-50 objects), and update request comes in for object A, A is retrieved from the hashmap and modified. Whilst A is being updated no other update request can access A but update requests for B and C should be executed. Assuming i may have hundreds of update requests every 10 seconds for example would i benefit alot from multithreading? and if so what type of collection would you recomend?

  • Maybe making the switch from AVID to FCP, would like some input please.

Happy T-Day to all. Would really appreciate any thoughts on this. I have many questions and need some answers from folks who are not always pushing AVID ( my vendor) I am a one man shop and use all Apple apps (LiveType, Motion, etc.) but have always stayed in my comfort zone with AVID Xpro and MOJO. Am thinking of going to Media Composer but after a few days of consideration and a trip to an Apple store, I may do a complete turn around and commot to FCP. Recently made the move to HD with the Sony XDCAM HD system. Here are my questions...plese be patient, this is a major move for me.
    1. If I purchase a new Intel G-5, will the internal SATA drives be OK for 35MPS HD?
    2. What AJA card or product should I buy so I can view HD SDI on a client monitor and output HD to a Sony XDCAM HD F-70 Deck?
    3. What graphics card should I order on the new machine?
    4. Can I use the FAM ( File Access Mode) to tranfer content?
    5. Any other considerations when ordering the new Intel machine?
I know I have many questions, but I really believe it is time for me to make the move. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks again.
    Tdub

    1. Yes, but just. You'd only get 1 stream. Faster drives would allow you to do more than one layer of real time playback. You could stripe more than one internal sata and get the job done that way.
    2. Kona LHe will do this, however you'd gain the ability to upconvert and cross convert the video to just about any format with the Kona 3.
3.The X1900. Motion and some effects in FCP will take advantage of it... down the line FCP is likely to rely more on the GPU is an educated guess of mine. the top of the line card is faster, but not enough to substaniate the price if you're working in Video. If you were working in 3D CAD environments, then the top of the liner would be the best choice.
4.I don't use XDCAM here, so I'm presuming that you're talking about a transfer mode with that. I'm pretty sure FCP 5.1.2 added this capability. Might search the COW on this term in the FCP forum there. http://www.creativecow..net.
5.Working with HD and MPEG streams would leave me wanting the fastest of the three machines. You'll want 4 gigs of RAM, but it's less expensive from other than Apple. I know just how scary it can be to move to a new platform, and did exactly as you are contemplating when FCP 2 arrived. I've never looked back. Hang here once you get started, and we'll help you with the transition. There is a book out there in the pro training series from Apple/Peachpit on ediiting on FCP if you're coming from Avid. I'd recommend you get that book. Will ease the transition no doubt.
    Hope you make the jump!

  • Powershell "RunAs" causing recycle bin issues. Would like some input please.

I developed a script to assist our UserAdmins with creation of AD user accounts and create home folders on the server shares.  I am encountering an issue with the recycle bin becoming corrupt when the user first logs in.  This script must be run
with an elevated account with permissions to the shares.  I also noted a change in the way the recycle bin is displayed in the share.
The home folder is created using:
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force -Path $directory
If I log into my machine as my elevated account and run powershell/powershell_ise, all is well.  The recycle bin displays as "Recycle Bin" with the correct icon image
However, if I log into my machine with my non-elevated account and select "Run as a different user" for Powershell or Powershell_ISE and use my same elevated account from above the users receive "corrupt" recycle bin errors when logging
in or viewing the recycle bin properties.  Additionally, recycle bin is now listed as "$Recyle.Bin" and is using a folder icon.  This issue is resolved by removing the users AD account from the home folder permissions and re-adding it with
    identical permissions.
I see this behavior using Win8.1 x64 as well as Win7 x64 Enterprise.
On another somewhat relevant topic, when launching Powershell_ISE with "Run as a different user" it often freezes and must be forcibly closed.  Could be relevant, could be coincidence.
I appreciate any input you may have regarding this issue.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

I'm trying not to come off as combative, but I feel you are misunderstanding or I am not being clear. The recycle bin is auto-created when the user first logs into the machine as is are the sub folders to the parent folder.  All of the desktop.ini files,
recycle bin folders and various other user profile objects are created upon first login by that user inside of the folder created in the PowerShell script.  Prior to this the user admins were manually creating the same parent folder with their elevated
accounts.  Given the isolated conditions in which it works vs when it doesn't there is no indication that permissions are causing this issue.
I'll try to explain why the issue, I believe, lies with PowerShell.
    1) Launch a PowerShell session from the current logged in elevated account
    2) Run the script
    3) Users home folder is created
    4) Upon user logging in for the first time the user profile objects are created in the home folder on the share
    5) No issues with recycle bin
vs - from the same machine, same script
    1) Launch a PowerShell session with "Run as different user" context using the same account from above
    2) Run the script
    3) users home folder is created
    4) Upon user logging in for the first time the user profile objects are created in the home folder on the share
    5) Recycle bin is corrupt and icon is wrong
The only thing that changes between these 2 scenarios is the way in which PowerShell is run.
It's the same computer, the same test user account, the same share, same GPOs and AppSense policies.
Scenario 1 is run from elevated account logged into local machine
Scenario 2 is run from non-elevated account with "Run as different user" context using the elevated account
I know I'm sounding like a broken record but it doesn't make sense AppSense or GPO or even folder permission would cause an issue when the folder is being created using the same account in both situations.

  • Zone edit, my first attempt; would like some assitance please :P

    Hello,
spent the week getting this server up (first time). have done well, got to domains working just fine.
but i'd like to be able to add an SPF record to my zone. but i have not idea how to do this. From what i can tell from reading the forums and such; this is my zone record to edit (correct?):
    zone "ipaultech.com." in {
    file "ipaultech.com.zone";
    type master;
if this true, how do i add the following text record:
    "v=spf1 a mx ~all"
if you could "dumb-down" your ansewer/reply i'd greatly appreciated it

BTW: if you know any links for Macosx and dns/bind, i wouldn't mind them.

Ahhhhh..... i totally get this. man i wish i knew about this dir about three days ago

  • About to purchase new Mac Pro - Need Advice

I am about to purchase a new mac pro and have some questions
I am planning to use final cut pro as well as Edius on Boot Camp.
I intend to edit footage in HDV from a sony Z1 and also from the new sony - pmw -ex3 which i will be planning to edit in HD and 24p.
    1) the default config for the mac pro is dual 2.8.ghz processors, what advantage gain will i get i upgrade to 3.0 or 3.2, is the extra power worth the money? will this give me more real-time editing
How many layers of HD 1920 x 1080 from the sony pmw-ex3, will i be able to edit in FCP 6.0 without any problems? would you advise more ram
    2) i prefer to work from RAID 5 drives and keep system drive separate, this is how i have worked on in PC/Windows environment. Can anyone confirm if i can have one JBOD drive for the system and 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 drive?
Will i be able to use a boot to run windows and also be able to use the RAID 5 drive on windows side?
    3) Is anyone using the 3ware RAID 5 side car? what is experienece is this compatible on the windows partition from boot camp
    4) How will i be able to preview HD footage?
    5) Do i need to invest in a better Graphics
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Here are a few answers.
    1. The Mac Pro 2.8 GHz model performs so well that it is difficult to justify paying 28% more for 7% of additional processor power in the case of the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz or 56% more for 14% additional processor power with the Mac Pro 3.2 GHz model. You might see a small 5-10% increase in performance when compressing video with the 3.2GHz model but it certainly would not be worth paying 50% more to me. In addition, Amazon has the 2.8 on sale for $2599 after an easy rebate:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000VR4F2Q/arizomacinusergr
That is a $200 savings off the retail price.
    2. If you want to use boot camp I would NOT recommend the Apple RAID card. Boot camp does not work with this card which leaves you wondering why you bought the card and how to get around this HUGE limitation. Instead, I would recommend the Areca ARC-1221x, HighPoint RR 3522 or the ARC-1680x if you want a SAS card. All of these cards have new firmware available that provide awesome performance and boot capability with the Mac Pro 2008. I would also get a SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay and 1TB Samsung HDs. This gives a solid, quiet 4-bay enclosure that can support RAID 5 with any of the cards and you can add a second enclosure later if you want to use all eight external ports with RAID 6 (for added redundancy and increased volume size). This leaves the internal bays available for Boot Camp, Mac OS X, backups or mirrors and provides RAID 5/6 capability that can be configured to perform almost twice as fast as the Apple RAID card and provide double the redundancy with RAID 6. 3. The 3Ware RAID 5 card is not a top pick in the Macintosh market. The options outlined above will provide much better performance and RAID 6 capabilities.
    4. You can view the the HD footage on the monitor.
    5. You may want a better graphics card but I would try the stock card first. I was surprised how well the ATI radeon HD 2600 XT card performs with Apple applications.
    Have fun!

  • Premiere Pro CC & New Mac Pro - Audio Line Out Issue

I'm having a few issues with the audio line out on the new Mac Pro. For some reason, Line Out locks into Premiere Pro. When I switch programs, the audio line out device stays locked to Premiere Pro and the only way to get other programs to be able to output audio when Premiere Pro is not current application, is to go into System Preferences > Sound and click onto an alternative output and then click back onto Line Out.

  • USB Card Reader not recognized on new Mac Pro (late 2013)

My Sony USB multi-card reader (model: MRW62E), which I use for SD cards mostly, works on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), my new iMac, and my old Mac Pro (2009), via the USB ports, but is unrecognized entirely on my new Mac Pro (late 2013). All machines are running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. Neither the card reader, nor the cards appear at all in FCP, image capture, apple system profiler, the desktop, or disk utility. I cannot find any drivers online addressing the issue, including Sony's website.
Perhaps an additional update for increased compatibility vis-a-vis the new Mac Pro would do the trick...

Does the reader show up under USB in System Report?
If the reader is working properly both the reader and an inserted card will show up.

  • New Mac Pro 3.0GHz v 2.8GHz for Logic

Assuming you put the same amount of RAM etc in a Machine is there going to be much of an advantage if I get a 3.0GHz compared to a 2.8Ghz Mac Pro?
The computer would be the assembly point for Audio from a Farm of 2 Mac minis, Possibly my G5 PPC (mentioned below), & a Muse Receptor (uses ethernet for midi and audio).
I am running VSL Vienna Instruments - Full orchestral package plus other Libraries. The new Mac Pro would run Strings, Pianos + RMX, Chris Hein Guitar etc and would also mix down inputs from the Mac Minis via a MOTU 2804. Altiverb first reflections are on each orchestral group and there is one main bus for the Tail. Core Audio on my G5 dual 2GHz with 4gig of RAM suffers from overload unless I freeze anything I can. I will initially go for 10GIG of RAM (Apple 2 as supplied + 8 from 3rd party) That would leave 2 slots spare.

You won't notice much difference between 3.0 and 2.8, you might be able to measure a bit less than 7% benefit in contrived benchmarks, but all other things being equal, shouldn't notice a difference running Logic.
Unless you're pushing to so hard that you need that extra 7%... but if you are, things aren't likely to be running very happily on either 2.8 or 3.0.
