Ordering prints - should I crop first?

I'm about to order prints from iPhoto for the first time. Apple makes the process easy, but they leave some unanswered questions.
I want 4"x6" prints but my camera takes 4:3 pictures (3072x2304). I've cropped most of them but I wonder how they would handle an image that is not in the right aspect ratio? Do the printers crop it? Or make a print with one dimension less than 4"x6"? Or leave white space on 2 edges of 4"x6" paper?
Do most of you crop first? Thanks for any help, suggestions, etc.

Lisa,
The photos will be resized to fit the 4 x 6 paper so that it will print with no white space. You will lose part of the image and have no control over which part is lost. Cropping first ensures that you get to choose how the photo is positioned. I recommend you keep doing it that way.
One thing I do to prepare for printing is place the photos I want in an album. Then I duplicate all of those photos and remove the original version from the album. I crop each duplicate in the album, then print. When finished, I can delete the cropped duplicates so I don't lose my original aspect ratio. Why, some of you are thinking, don't I just use the Revert to Original command and avoid the whole duplicating business? The answer is that I sometimes use PhotoShop Elements to carefully edit my photos, especially before I print them. If I then used iPhoto to crop for printing, and used Revert to Original to delete the cropping, I would lose my careful editing as well. With my workflow, my edits are preserved, and I only discard the cropping.

I have a Mac OSx 10.6.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and can no longer order printed photo albums unless I update to new version of iPhoto. But reviews of new iPhoto are so negative that I am uncomfortable about buying it. Will it be fine or should I steer clear of trouble and accept that i can no longer publish my photos?

    iPhoto '11 is working well.
The reviews usually only show the comments of people who do not like the changed features.
To get an idea what to expect, when you upgrade, look at the iPhoto '11 support sites.

  • Ordering Prints '11 - Will Square Format be cropped?

    Hi,
I want to try the order prints option in iPhoto 11. I see from older versions of iPhoto that square format photos will get cropped and wondered if anyone knew if this was also true of 11?
I went to order and noticed there is no option to tell them not to crop so am wary to place an order not knowing!
    Cheers

Apple does not offer a square print. Nor does it offer a "do not crop" option.
    Available print sizes are here

I think you need a different printing service.

  • Problems with 'Order Prints' from Aperture 2.1.3 Mystery borders

    *Some background:*
I've been using Aperture for about 3 months now, importing most of my iPhoto library into the program. I have only recently started shooting in RAW format, most of my photos image files are in JPG format. In the past, I've had no problems with obtaining prints from within iPhoto or to a limited extent Aperture. So, far as I know my program is up-to-date. I have 2 plugins installed: Aperture2twitter and *flickr export Lite* both of which work acceptably.
*The problem:* I ordered 317 4×6 prints from my aperture library.
Every photo has a 1/4″ border on both sides of the image, i.e. the printed image is only 4×5 1/2″. I have never ordered this quantity before, but I don’t believe that was the problem, it appears that the processing machine was misaligned and no one reviewed the prints prior to shipping.
I tried again, on 4 different images ... all JPG files with 3 out of 4 were OK, but one exhibited the "border" issue.
I haven't a clue what is going on here. Apple implied +(via email)+ that I would have to individually crop every photo to ensure proper aspect ratio. This makes no sense to me at all, as I have never had this kinda problem before.
Could the plugin(s) be interfering with the s/w? Is there a trick to having photos printed from within Aperture that was not present in iPhoto?
Any thoughts on what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -john

I believe that I've solved this problem, with the help of the folks at Apple who handle Aperture tech support using the Aperture support ID that came with the product.
So the short answer is: Aperture print services REALLY DO REQUIRE the image to be cropped (constrained as they say) prior to the data being sent to Apple Print services.
Here is the link that describes cropping http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1993?viewlocale=en_US
The process as described is cumbersome, but the support tech pointed out that in Aperture, crops are 'non-destrutive' and can be undone simply by removing the check mark on the Adjustments tab of the image you crop. *This means that you do not have to make a duplicate image for cropping.*
So, here is the process that I arrived at to ensure that my "order prints" job turned out:
    1. create an album of all the photos you want to submit for printing.
    2. for each image call up the Crop HUD by pressing 'c' on the keyboard.
3.select the aspect ratio that you want for your photo. Make sure that it does NOT SAY Master Aspect Ratio, or Main Display Aspect Ratio.
    4. Crop the photo
on the adjustments tab you can see the X and Y data and Height / Width information which can be undone.
    5. Submit your print request to Apple for all the cropped photos.
When the prints arrive, you can compare the prints with the submitted photos. They should all be good. You can then delete the album (since it really is not a physical thing) or keep it for reference.
It all seemed a bit arcane to me, as I never had to worry about this in iPhoto. It must be that iPhoto sends different data than Aperture. I have just received 200 + prints back from Apple Print Services with about 98% success rate. I just have to adjust my thinking and my process when dealing with Aperture.

  • Transfer order Printing Error

    Hello,
I have two issue with tranfer order
    1) We are printing transfer order through network order CN23 .The part has been issued to network order from 3 Group WBS element .So when we are printing the Transfer order it is just printing one WBS element on transfer order not the other two of them.So is there a configuration setting for the trnasfer order to print all the WBS element?
    2) When the user is printing tasfer order from his profile LT31 and including all the setting plus defined printer as LOCL the transfer order is not getting printed .Only when he is going to SP02 it is getting printing .So i guess there must be some setting that is missing in printer config .I checked in OMLV but couldnt find one .Can any one pls help.?

Thanks for the reply Abhijit.I saw in OMLV in Print code that the printer has been set to 02 so does that mean it is going to Spool? If so how can i change the setting back to print immediately ?what needs to be done in printer setting to get that print immediately.
My first question is related to Transfer order print out .We have network order which has 3 WBS elements from which the component has been issued. So when we print the transfer order via LT31 it is only printing one WBS not the other two of them.So my question is is there a way in config to change the Transfer order so that it print all the WBS element or it should be done via coding?

  • Ordering prints from Apple

I want to try out ordering prints from Apple. The FAQ on Apple's site says that I should send JPEGs. If I only have RAW files in my Aperture project do I need to specifically produce JPEGs and have Aperture post those to Apple (via 'Order Prints') or is Aperture smart enough to create JPEGs from my RAW file and its adjustments?
Is Apple's print service decent? I'm in the UK.

I do not use RAW but the instructions seem pretty clear to me - http://www.apple.com/uk/support/photoservices/preparation_tips/
And there is a form at the bottom of the page to ask questions
As far as quality, I've been happy
If your images are not 4x6 (or what ever print size you want to order) and few are remember that they will be cropped to the print size - if you want to be sure that the remaining photos is what you want then you should crop rather than leaving it to chance

  • Ordering prints from other suppliers

Yesterday I uploaded some photos from my iFoto library to a supplier I've been using for ages (photobox.co.uk). All seemed to go well until I got to the ordering prints page; then a warning sign appeared saying that the quality of the photos uploaded was not enough to print 6"x4" prints from. Yet when I ordered them through the Apple print service, there was no problem. I don't particularly want to be tied in to one supplier of prints (especially as photobox is cheaper!) - so how do I make sure that photos I upload are of the correct size?

How did you upload those files? Did you use the files in the Data folder inside the iPhoto Library folder? Those are thumbnail files and are very small. You need to crop them in iPhoto and then export to the Desktop via the File->Export->File Export menu option. Then upload to the other site.
Although some sites might not require you to crop to the size desired first you may get them cropped in a way you don't want. Most digital camera photos are in a size ratio of 4:3. The 4 x 6 inch print has a different ratio and the printers often will automatically scale the 6 inch size to fill the paper and cut off some of the 4 inch dimension one each side.

  • Are Apple ordered prints C prints (RA4)?

    Hello.
I'm actually a little disappointed with my first set of ordered prints from Apple. I usually output to 320 DPI high quality JPEGs and have them printed locally on a Noritsu minilab on Endura E surface paper (you know, regular matte RA4 stuff). I decided that for $0.19 I'd try out the Apple prints mostly for convenience (can't beat it). I found that the prints are glossy (could still be RA4) but on very thin paper. The prints don't have the viscerally satisfying feel of a "regular" print.
    Anyone have an opinion?
    -Josh

Yes they are RA-4, but i know exactly what you mean the paper is definitely way cheaper than Endura it stinks the books come out pretty decent for the price...but the prints should be upgraded and also a option of luster and glossy.

  • Order prints.

I created two albums that i wanna order prints through Apple, my question is do i need to have a .mac account or normal Apple ID account should work?!.
    Thanks

Just a warning to crop the photos to the size you want printed before ordering so that what is printed is what you expect. Otherwise the files will be arbitrarily cropped to fit the size ordered and you may get areas cropped out that you didn't want.

  • Re iphoto: when I double click on a thumbnail i get e grey screen with exclamation mark..can't access my photos to edit, order prints etc

Was wondering if anyone can help...I am not very computer friendly but want to be able to edit my photos, use them as jpegs, order prints etc. When I double click on a thumbnail ( am presuming the thumbnails are the small photos ) I get a grey screen with an exclamation mark on it. I cannot drag the thumbnail onto the desk top it just pings back. This doesn't happen with all the thumbnails and has been a problem since we upgraded to snowleopard. I recently reinstalled photos from the memory card from my camera and they are alright. I am presuming that the old photos are stuck in there somewhere if only I knew the right buttons to press to get them out. Thanks, Jane Thomas

Easiest: Restore from your back up.
    Otherwise:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • How to hold several photos in the "order print" function of iPhoto?  I only get one at a time.

I cannot get more than one photo to appear in the "order prints" section of iPhoto at a time.  How do I move several photos over to order prints?

What is your iPhoto verstion? Assuming you are having the latest version on your new mac, it should work like this:
Select all photos at once in the event or album.
With the photos selected, use the command "File > Order Prints" from the main menu bar.
What happens, when you try that?

  • I am trying to select more than one of my images to order prints?  What button do I hold down to make my computer let me select more than one at a time?

I want to order prints of my images but can only select one at a time?  How do I get my computer to let me select several prints to order?

If you hold the Ctl (Command) key while clicking the files you want, you can select multiple individual files. If there are numerous files one after the other or a bulk batch you want to select, if you click the first file to select, then hold down the Shift key and click the last file you want to select, everything between the first file selected and the last file selected will be highlighted.
    Hope this helps

  • How can i order prints of more than one photo at a time?

Hi I am trying to order prints of more than one photo at a time but can only select one photo - if I press command it just jumps to the next photo, not allowing me to select multiple photos.
    Thanks

Easiest way is to make an album of the photos you want to order, crop them to the print size, select all and order
