Organization using PSE 7 - help!

i have about 18,000 pictures scattered between my C drive, D drive and an external hard drive. in numerous attempts to back them up, i have accidentally made copies of many of them. 3 or 4 copies in some cases. can i use elements 7 as a filter to run all these pictures through and have just one copy on an external hard drive? how do i do it? if i can't, does anyone have any suggestions?

There is no direct way to do this (search for duplicates and keep only one copy) but there is a workaround. Select some images (if it works fine for you, later you can select all images) and click on 'Find->By visual searches->Duplicate photos'. After a while, a diloag will show showing duplicate images in tracks. Now comes the manuall work, select the duplicate images from various tracks (one by one) and click on 'Remove from catalog' button located near bottom left of the dialog.

I'm happy to report that I've managed the resolve this issue of mine
After a little discussion with customer support through online chat today, I was still advised to try the uninstall and install to see what happens.
So I used the CC cleaner tool first, restarted then started by installing CS2 then CS5 using my serial numbers and made sure that I selected 32 and 64 bit programs to be installed
Anxiously, I restarted my laptop to see if it would reboot okay and thankfully it did *relief!*
Now I can open avi files using 32 bit of Photoshop CS5 without any problems (thank goodness!!)
I think I probably didn't install the 32 bit program when I first bought the installation CD, since I thought I didn't need it but never knew it was still required for editing avi files!!
Surprisingly, I still got to keep both versions of CS2 and CS5 this time around, as CS2 was simply replaced by CS5 when I first installed it two years ago....hmm.

Disable Elements 8 Organizer due to using Lightroom and want to still use PSE

I have installed and now use Lightroom.
I still want to use Elements 8 Editor to further edit images.
Every image I edit ends up in the Elements Organizer.
I need help preventing my newly edited images from finding their way into Elements Organizer.

The most efficient way to do this is to set PSE editor as your external editor in LR and make the round trip from there.

Cannot use Organizer in PSE 12.

I have recently bought PSE 12 on line from Adobe, downloaded it successfully, used the Editor but it won't open the Organizer. Why ? I have Windows 7, 4GB 64-bit o.s. Can anyone help, bearing in mind I am not a computer geek

Hi Sue,
I think that I might have confused you.
The idea was to minimize all your open applications and create a shortcut on your desktop so that you can launch the Organizer directly from your desktop.
When you right click on the desktop where there are no icons, you should see this
Select New then Shortcut - that should bring up this screen
Paste the following into the location box and click on Next to bring up the next screen
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Elements 12 Organizer\PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe"
Enter a name for the shortcut - I have used PSE Org - and click on Finish
A new Icon for the shortcut should appear on your desktop.
Double clicking on that should launch the organizer.

Relocating (moving) pictures in an Organizer Album using PSE 6.0

I am using PSE 6.0. I have my pictures in the Organizer as an album. The pictures are currently in Date (oldest first) order and that is the order I generally want. However I want to move some pictures before others, for example, PIC 10 (dated Jan. 23, 2010) to be in front of PIC 5 (dated Jan. 17, 2010)? Also I want to duplicate a picture and move its copy to another place in the album. Is there a way to move pictures around in the order you wish once that have been brought into PSE from your hard drive? Thanks for any help.

You must first choose the album from the panel on the right. The thumbnails contained in that album can then be dragged around and form the new running order. Change from newest/oldest to Album Order (the third choice only becomes available within the album; not the overall catalog which has just the two sort options).

Thanks for your response DJ. I have Windows Vista and I'am getting NO error messages, crazy right? I just click on the organizer and it acts like its going to do something and then you wait and wait for maybe 30 minutes and it just doesn't move forward. I have been using the PSE programs for many years and have never encountered this problem! I have thousands of pictures on this program and its starting to freak me out that I cant access any of them! If you have any additional ideas please let me know. Thanks Julie

What modname and modver do you see for the error? (Precise spelling, please.)
If the error is a BEX and you thus aren't seeing a modname or modver, let us know what P1 through P9 items are being listed for the error.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties.
It should be very uncommon for Pages to crash. I've been using it for years on a daily basis and it's only happened to me once except when I was trying to replicate a bug for someone.
Your experience might be a symptom of an underlying problem with your system. I recommend that you back all your stuff up now.
Whilst trying to isolate the issue, I recommend that you manually create frequent backups of your documents using the Finder after a successful save until you can trust it.
Next, use disk utility to do a repair permissions on your hard drive.
Also, after quitting Pages, try trashing your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWorks.Pages.plist file (back it up first if you want) and restarting Pages.
If this doesn't work, there are loads of troubleshooting tips here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html. I also recommend that you read the tips on system maintenance.
In case you didn't already know this, Pages files are actually packages. Control-click on the icon and select Show Package Contents to see what's inside. You may be able to recover some text from the files in there. I don't believe there are any repair utilities. Nor is the file format available.

Using PSE catalog/organizer with CS5

I have been using PSE 7 for a while and have just transitioned to Photoshop CS5.
I would like to use the catalog from PSE for organizing photos, and PS CS5 for editing.
In the PSE preferences I have tried to notify PSE that I want to use PS CS5 as the supplementary editor. All I get is a message that says I do not need to choose PS as the other editor as PSE already supports using PS from the edit menu and edit toolbar (which I can`t see how that would happen).
It is my guess that PSE catalog/organizer and PS CS5 do not interact, and that I can use both but independently.
Is my guess correct?

Thanks, MTSTUNER. I now see that option in PSE Edit menu. However, when I select it there is a message that Thumbnails are being updated, and a copy of the photo is made in the organizer. PS does not launch, and if I launch PS first, the photo still does does not appear in PS.

You can't install them separately, but it is easy to place unique shortcuts on the desktop for organizer and for editor.
In Organizer, go to Edit>Preferences>Auto Analyzer options and uncheck analyzer and people recognition if you don't use them - may improve resource utilization.

Using organizer In PSE 9

How do tags and catalogs transfer with photos stored on a portable hard drive? I use PSE 9 on two different computers.

I can work on photos on two different computers.....whichever one I happen to be at. I want to save my photos on a portable hard drive to access them on either computer. What I am not understanding (nor could find an answer in my searches) is how are the tags and catagories "saved" with the photos. When I pull up photos from the portable hard drive on say computer number 1, will the tags show with them even if I did the tagging on computer number 2? Another way to possible put it is to ask where are the tags and catagory information stored?

Moving PSE 10 organizer to PSE 11 organizer

I have been using PSE since PSE 7-I purchased 7, 10, and 11. I am seriously looking for a better organizer solution.
My two catalogs worked fantastically well in the PSE 10 organizer - one click and just what I was looking for popped up. Not now! I am SOOOO done!
I repaired and optimized in PSE 10 - multiple times and still both catalogs (one with photos and one with digital scrapbooking supplies) refuse to convert properly. The photo catalog did not convert many of my pictures and many are no longer tagged, along with missing tags. The scrapbook catalog converted the Alaphabet folder and that's it and again, missing tags.
Searching the boards has been useless!
Any sane help would be greatly appreciated.

There's no such bug. I mean navigation between files is the most operation one would do, how can that be buggy
You can double click an image to view it in Single Image View and use keyboard arrow keys to navigate left/right/up/down. Also double clicking an image which is fully zoomed out takes you back to previous zoom-in state where all thumbnails were visible.
You may also try other views to arrange you media in grid - Thumbnails, Import Batch, Date View, Folder Location. These are available in 'Display' dropdown present on the top right corner of the application.

Standard Picture Packages using PSE 10 with a Mac.

I am unable to print out a standard picture package using PSE 10 with a Mac. I like to print 3 4" X 6" Pic Package with different images. It is impossible. I had a PC and Elements 8 before with no problem. I followed all the help instructions to no avail. What can I do?

With Mac, I am unable to find a 3 4" X 6" (example) picture package in PSE 10 Edito
File>Picture Package>choose 8x10 for the working area and you should see:
Then go up to the top and choose an image. It will appear in all the zones. Just click a zone in the preview to change to another image. It's actually a more robust package than in organizer--you can save it as a file, for one thing, instead of having to recreate it each time. All printing in the mac version happens from editor, so that's where they put the picture package and contact sheet. You can also create and save custom layouts via the Edit Layout button. This is the same picture package and contact sheet that came for many years in PS, so if you look for PS tutorials (pre-CS6) you should be able to find very detailed instructions.

Can I open Organizer in PSE 9 without having it organize my images?

I'm using PSE 9 strictly for its editing capabilities. I have over 8,000 images stored on my PC and don't want their organizational system changed. Horror stories seem to indicate Organizer will automatically try to reorganize my images if I open it but I'm curious what else Organizer might offer that I DO want to use. Can I open the Organizer tab without launching an automatic reorganiization of my image files?

I apologise that this not a 'reply' to the original question, as I don't know how to that.
This is in fact my own question.
1. I use PSE 7 or my just installed PSE9, "how do I organize my photo's" the suggested PSE way?
2. What I would really want to do, is CONTROL the pix that I want to come into 'Organize', when I do my different tasks. How can I do this?
3. Right now my PSE7 Organize photo's fill up PSE7 with so many pix, it is more confusing than helpful.
4. I just Installed PSE9, and told it NOT to use the organize pix from PSE7. Now I can't bring any pix into PSE9 Organize. When I try to bring in pix
    from'FILE", like I always would like to, the ONLY File Types that PSE9 is looking for, are "XML". I have NO xml pix file types?? Where is the XML file type
    coming from??
It seems that Organizier has turned a simple 'gather' pix event, into something very complicated.
I have read many pages of PSE Help on Organize, but it had not cleared this up for me. I understand that there is a way to 'group' or maybe 'TAG' my pix, so they may catergarized for selective imports, but even after reading the HELP, is not at all clear how this is done, or if it is what I want to do.
All I want to do is:
A. Bring in ONLY the pix I want, FROM FILE, (I assume Organize is proper way to do this), for each project that I happen to be doing, not All my pix at once. For a
    Collage as an example.
B. I want the choice of bringing in several pix at once sometimes, and do this "FROM FILE", at my selection.
Can this be done?
