Organizing items in menu bar (right side)

I know if I hold down the command button I can drag them, but this only works with stock Apps as far as I can tell. I've got a couple of third party things up there, and they will not obey the command.
Is there any other way?

As zerwas says, there are two types of menu bar items, the one type you can rearrange on the menu bar itself, the other type you can't. The order those items appear is determined by their order in SystemPrefs/Accounts/Login items. Try rearranging them there. However SystemUIServer doesn't always respect its own plist (where the final ordering gets stored). I have one of the second type (non-draggable) in my menu bar and I prefer it to be next to the Spotlight icon. Sometimes upon restart it is in the furthest away position instead. When that happens I launch ActivityMonitor, select SystemUIServer and click Quit, then ForceQuit. It relaunches and always gets the arrangement "right" on relaunch.

You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

Perhaps you could be more specific, as it is a little difficult to answer your question without any details. I can give you some general ideas though.
On my machine there are a few applications that have installed items into the menu bar - I'm assuming you are talking about the icons on the right hand side of the top bar. To remove those items, I would generally need to uninstall the program that created them. To do this varies a little from application to application.
Also, sometimes an application will have preferences that allow you choose if you want to display the item in the menu bar.
So, my general advice would be that you need to identify the application that placed the item there, and remove it from your computer. If there is an uninstall program for that application, I would run that in the first instance.
If you don't actually wish to uninstall the application, you may need to click on the item or run the application and see if there is a setting to not show the menu bar item.

Menu Bar (right) Disappears

Hello fine folks,
Uh oh. My computer just went through a bluescreen hissy fit, then came back okay (without a restart). But when it came back, the menu items on the right (clock, AirPort, BlueTooth, Time Machine) disappeared.
I went into the clock function, and the "display in menu bar" box was not clicked. I clicked it, and nothing happened. I came back to it, and it was unclicked. It won't stay checked.
I tried doing the same with AirPort, and Time Machine -- none of the check boxes are clicked, and none will stay clicked.
I restarted. The machine did not respond. So I had to push the button on the front of the machine (hard restart?). The machine turned off, and then rebooted. But I still cannot get the OS doodads to appear in the menu bar right.
The only thing I am able to get to appear there (other than Spotlight) is Synergy, an iTunes controller (third party).
Any ideas on this one?

Check your login items account. Make sure your menu items are listed and unchecked. You can add them to the account if they are not listed by clicking on the "+" sign.
If repairing permissions does not work, try booting from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.

Newbie wants to build 5 item interacting menu bar

Hi, Firstly, I'm an absolute beginner with Spry, though
working thru Adobe's 'Dreamweaver CS 3 Classroom in a book'. I'm
beginning to grasp the basics [at last!], but I want to build a 5
item vertical menu bar which interacts with an area or cell located
to the right by changing both a photograph and corresponding text.
i.e., menu item 1 'Deserts' selects a desert pic and relevant text.
When mouse hovers and clicks on the next menu item 2 'Forests', the
main cell or area changes to a forest pic and new forest text. And
so on with the other three menu items. I also need the page to load
with menu item 1 showing by default. Is this possible?
I've worked thru 'Creating interactive pages' [using
behaviors], as well as Ch9 'Integrating Ajax with Spry', then
trying to adapt either methods to my specific requirement...without
much success!
This is a tough assignment, but if anyone can help, I'm very
willing to learn from even a snippet of code that would point me in
the right direction.

Go to "Firefox"--> "Options" --> "Advanced"
Then un-check "Use hardware acceleration when available"
While not verified, I believe this problem is due to an SLI configuration where the focus is on monitor 1. (I.e acceleration is available, but only on monitor 1.)

Firefox doesn't print some pages well, but if you have this problem on all pages, there may be some problem with Firefox's ability to work with your printer driver. If it's only particular pages, can you post the URLs for an assessment?
I'm not clear on what happened with Cut, Copy & Paste: you moved them from the menu drop-down to the toolbar and then they disappeared?
If you return to Customize mode, try clicking Restore Defaults and see whether things return to normal.
When you say "toolbar background" do you mean a theme you were using in an earlier version of Firefox? Otherwise, there's not much to see.
If Firefox is becoming transparent or showing some desktop or showing other display glitches it may be incompatible with your graphics card drivers. The standard workaround for that is to disable Firefox's use of hardware acceleration for graphics.
3-bar menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This will take effect the next time you exit out of Firefox and restart it.

Item 'stored' on the right side of the tool bar of every file

When I open any file there is a file stored on the right side of the tool bar ( in my case the movie Hotel Translyvania). If I double click it the movie will start, however, I don't want it to be there. How do I remove it? How did it get there in the first place?

Two more things.
Your description sounds like it might be limited to the single application named Finder. Do you see it in other applications, perhaps in Open or Save dialogs?
Is it always the same two files?
If it is always the same two files and only in Finder, you may have inadvertantly created shortcuts to them in the Finder folder header then deleted the original files, leaving the shortcuts invalid.

Drag and Drop feature in start menu between right side and left side

Hello , I think it is a good idea to allow the user to drag items and apps from the left side of start menu and drop them in the right side, and vice versa. Such feature make life easier than clicking right button and choose unpin or pin to start.

Can't remove unwanted item from menu bar

I recently purchased a Western Digital My Book HD to use for backups. The HD included software which I stupidly thought I needed to use it, so I installed it. I quickly realized I didn't need it and uninstalled the software, however it has left an icon in my menu bar which I can't seem to get rid of. Is there a way to make it go away or am I stuck now?

how did you uninstall that software? did you simply trash the application? that wasn't the proper way to do it since the app used an installer to install. there should be an uninstaller that came with that app. try using that. you might have to reinstall that software first. if that doesn't work then you have to search out what exactly that software installed. there could be login items. check those in system preferences->accounts. or there could be some launch daemons. check homedirectory/Library/Launchagents, /Library/launchagents and /Library/launchdaemons. but definitely try the uninstaller first.

Installed Norton Personal Firewall. Turns out it is not compatable with Intel Macs. I uninstalled Norton, removed it from the start-up items, but I cannot find a way to remove the Norton icon from the menu bar. Apple + drag does not work.
Any suggestions?

Nothing in login and I went to the link and downloaded what I thought would be the appropriate un-installer. When I opened the un-installer it opened in Text Edit and looked something like a bunch of crazy symbols.
I used the un-installer that came with disk and after I hit un-install, I got a message that just read "error" over and over, but the icon in the menu bar was gone. However, the next time that I started the MacBook I was greeted with a prompt that I installed software that could pose a security risk and that I should re-start the computer. I did eventually re-start and the icon is now back in the menu bar which I believe would indicate the Norton is still on my MacBook...somewhere.....what the heck!?

I have unwanted items (icons) in my menu bar like the Canon scanner icon. It drives me unnecessarily crazy. How do I get rid of them?

Your Canon scanner icon may be there because it is set to open when you boot. System Preferences>Accounts>Startup Items. If it is there select it and hit the minus sign. What happens when you click on the icon? have you tried to darg the icon out of the menu bar when holding down the command key?

The item in menu bar with the 3 rolling balls I used to download from You Tube are not on my tool bar since upgrading. How do I download now?

There was an icon on the menu bar that had 3 balls that revolved. Next to it was a drop down arrow that would let me choose to download files from You Tube and others in several formats. I recently had to remove and reinstall Firefox from my computer and evidently with this version, that icon is not there. How do I get it back or how do I download now?

How to work on flash stage separately without item/tool/menu bar like ⌘+f in photoshop

Hi eveybody.
This is my problem.
I would like to work on stage working area in a second screen whitout the tool bar on the top of the window of stage.
I know that i can hide toolbar, and de-select pasteboard by view>pasteboard.
But i'm trying to work on similar fullscreen like photoshop with ⌘+f command.
Is there any solution? into flash or other external script of finder-mac.
I tried some software for finder and similar but they didn't work on flash
If it can't be possible why adobe not implemented this function in cs5?

Deleted items from menu bar MS Word for Mac

I was customizing the toolbars and I was dragging the 'View' button and when I released it disappeared. It like poofed away. And I cannot figure out how to fix this because you need to use 'View' in order to go to 'Customize Toolbars' to fix this. Help!!
