Organizing photos on itouch

Hi, I have organized photos on my PC with multiple levels of folders so that I can navigate and find photos quickly. When I synch with the itouch, it looks like I can have only one level of folders - I would think there must be some way to have multiple folder levels on your itouch?
Thanks for any insight

Has anyoneelse out there been able to organize their photos in multiple folder levels on the touch?

Something went wrong. Now for a useful answer...
Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Organizing Photos in a Slideshow

I am organizing photos by date within a large slide show that I am setting up in iPhoto 9. When I decide to add another photo it of course goes to the end of the slide show. How do I get each new photo up into the slide show where I want it without having to drag each photo up into it's proper place? There has to be a better way, but I can't figure it out! It's a real drag doing it this way! In iPhoto 8 there were smaller thumbnail sizes that could be 'dragged and dropped' into place, but I can't find that in iPhoto 9 slideshow. Thanks so much in advance for any help!
    Sunny

    Sunny:
Add your photos to an album that's set to sort by date. Then when you have all the photos you want select that album and click on the Slideshow button. It's either that or doing what you're doing.

  • Organizing photos with no dates - what's best?

Hi, I'm new to Macs and iPhoto so please be patient! I have quite a lot of photos scanned from very old family photos, many of which I have no idea of the date when it was taken. iPhoto seems to want a date for every photograph - is there a way of labelling the date of a photo as unknown? Similarly is tehre a way of giving a photo a year without having to specify a day and month, as sometimes the only thing I know about a photo is the year.
How do other people go about organizing photos with this problem?
    Any suggestions gratefully received!
    Thanks,
    Andy

About all you can do in changing the date for the photos in the Info pane is to select 1/1 as the day for the year you want to associate with the photo. Otherwise, as you've found out, iPhoto will put today's date with that year.
What I do is name the photo before importing with the international date format, YYYY-MM-DD-01.jpg, -02.jpg, etc. You can do it manually or if you have a group your can batch rename them sequentially with an application like "R-Name". You can find it by searching at VersionTracker.com. In your case you can just use the year and some other identifier, i.e. 2001-grandma.jpg, They can be sorted alphanumerically by year that way. You can also change the title in iPhoto, either singularly for by batch. This will change the title but not the file names. To get the file names the same as the title you must either rename before importing or after renaming in iPhoto export to the desktop using the "Use Title" option.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Photos in iTouch

I'm having problems uploading my photos in iTouch. I know I have to use iTunes, but I don't even see any options to do that. Or a PHOTO category. Help?

Do you have the iPod connected to the computer when you are looking at iTunes?
Can you see the iPod listed in the sources column on the left hand side of iTunes?
If you can them click on the iPod in the sources list and you will then see the Summary page and tabs that are for that iPod.
Now go to the Photos tab and select the folder you want to use to provide photos for the iPod.
Click the apply button at the bottom of the iTunes window and you are away.

  • Organizing photos on more than one computer

    Hello,
I would like suggestions on organizing photos.  I am a professor of architecture and have several thousands of photos of buildings and cities that I have visited and designed.  I use some of these photos for lectures and other professional work, but many of them go unused.  The total amount of space taken is about 100GB and is growing fast.  My main computer is a 15" MBPro, but I have begun to use an 11" MBA for lecturing.  The problem is that neither drive is able to hold my complete photo library.
My question is:  How do I best organize my photo library so that I can keep the same "5 Star" photos on both computers, but still be able to see images on a back-up hard drive when connected?  I have both Aperture and iPhoto.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    Matthew Jelacic

You are asking two questions in one.  You'll get a more successful set-up if you address them separately.  The question you stress is file management.  Put simply, you want to be able to use an Aperture Library (or a subset of same) on two portable computers with insufficient built-in storage space.  Secondarily, you are also asking about image management: how to structure your Library for best use providing source material for a professor of architecture.
The file management questions is more easily answered, esp. as you have specified that your top need to have 5-star (and presumably only 5-star) images on the second computer.  First, read the User Manual chapter on Library files.  That will almost certainly provide you the information you need to answer your question with more specificity than we can provide here.  (Click heading for link.)
    Working with Library Files
Aperture exports projects, albums, and folders as a library file. You can transfer the library file from one Aperture system to another and then merge the transferred library file into the library file on that system. All links between versions and their masters are maintained when library items are transferred. This is particularly useful if you use a portable computer when on location or away from your studio, and a workstation at your studio. Any work done in the field can be exported from your portable computer as a library file and then merged with the library file on the workstation at your studio.
When the library file becomes large and requires more disk space than is available in its current location, you can move it to a hard disk with greater storage capacity. To change the location of the library, you move the library file to a new location and then double-click it to open it in Aperture.
I think you'll it easiest to use one of your portable machines only, both in the office and at the lectern, with all of your images having Referenced Masters on an external FW800 drive.  Either set you Previews to the size you need in the lecture hall, or if that is insufficient, convert all 5-star images' Referenced Masters to Managed Masters using the "File→Consolidate Masters" command.  If you do that, you'll have your Library on your laptop, your 5-star images Masters inside that Library (as Managed Masters) and all you other image's masters on your external drive.
There are many posts on the forum re: Managed and Referenced Masters (search -- good stuff there).  Two things to know from the get-go:
    Every image has a Master
Image's have Masters.  Libraries can contain all of one kind of Master, or may be mixed.  Libraries contain images; images are linked to Masters.
    Good Luck.
PS: Ditch iPhoto, or ditch Aperture.  They are not practicably compatible.

  • Moving from folder-organized photo library on networked NAS to iPhoto...

    Hello,
This is a fairly broad question, I know, but I've been researching for almost a full week and still at a loss as to what to do, so I thought some of the kind souls on here might be able to cut thru the forest of info out there to help me.
I vetoed iPhoto long ago but am now interested in trying it out & testing it against Picasa. However, I have a fairly large photo library that I keep on NAS, and definitely want to keep it there. Basically the research I've been doing has scared me, with all the horror stories about mixed libraries and the dangers of referenced libraries (which is what I was thinking would probably be the way to go), so now I'm a bit frozen.
My photos are currently folder-organized, mostly by date, but the level above date is by major categories (such as child's name, etc). I realize the date organization becomes redundant if I migrated to iPhoto, and even the categories seem redundant too if I can tag them all instead, etc.
The Picasa part was pretty easy, since I can just point it to the externally stored library and it does the rest, not moving anything. That part of Picasa is brilliant and makes a strong argument for going that route. My big hangup with it is the lack of nested collections - particularly in the web environment. The organizational aspects of Picasa seem a bit lackluster - and iPhoto sounds to be pretty good at that.
But with iPhoto, I'm having trouble deciding how to structure things and get started. I've read up on moving an existing iPhoto library to an external drive, but my impression is that to achieve what I'm trying to, I would need to import the entire library into local iPhoto library FIRST, then go backwards and migrate that iPhoto libary back onto NAS - which would then be a duplicate of the entire library since I'd be leaving the original intact to continue using with Picasa. Is that indeed the way to do it? I'm a little worried about ending up with an undifferentiated mass of 50+ Gigs of pics in iPhoto that i'd then need to go thru individually to tag (a monstrous task), as opposed to, say, having the names of folders turned into tags on all the pics within those folders (wishful thinking?).
To complete the picture of my situation for whoever may be kind enough to read all this, we have an iMac & a MBP, and would love to be able to share the NAS library on our respective iPhotos, and be able to keep "sync'd" up to what the other has done. From reading around it seems this is a little trickier, and the stuff I've been seeing about speed issues with WiFi-connected NAS libraries is not making me any more comfortable.
I was somehow able to rig just this situation up for iTunes (the library for which is shared & kept on NAS), which works pretty good (although I'm now concerned that that is also a 'referenced library' and liable to the same horror stories and cautions as external referenced libraries for iPhoto - is it the same? - so far so good...).
I've seen Terence Devlin mention a few times about using 'external managed libraries' instead of referenced libraries, but I'm not sure how to do that. The other vague conclusion I've come to from reading around is that I should probably use iPhoto Library Manager to achieve my goals here, and although I'm aware of what IPLM does, I'm not totally clear about how I would use it most effectively in my situation.
Whew - sorry for such a long rambling 'question'! This has probably been addressed elsewhere in the boards, but I've been reading for hours and can only get glimpses into a possible strategy for my situation - I thought just asking might nip it in the bud.
    THANKS!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
A long question with, I'm afraid, a short answer.
a fairly large photo library that I keep on NAS, and definitely want to keep it there.
Stick with what you have. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. That pretty much rules out having a Managed Library on that NAS.
    In some more detail:
My photos are currently folder-organized, mostly by date, but the level above date is by major categories (such as child's name, etc). I realize the date organization becomes redundant if I migrated to iPhoto, and even the categories seem redundant too if I can tag them all instead, etc.
Here's a fast way to tag them:
Start at the bottom of your Folder hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in the iPhoto Window. iPhoto will import the pics and make an Album of the same name as the Folder. Now: Want to tag all those pics with the same keyword: Select all (Command - a) and apply the keyword.
You can work through your images quite fast in this way.
Alternatively, use an app like Keyword Manager which has Nested Tags as a feature. So, for instance, you can set a hierarchy: John is your Son so tagging 'John' will also add a 'Family' tag and so on. In my case I have tags like 'Seattle' that add 'Washington State' 'U.S' and 'Travel' to the pics. WIth auto completion all I have to type is Sea...
but my impression is that to achieve what I'm trying to, I would need to import the entire library into local iPhoto library FIRST, then go backwards and migrate that iPhoto libary back onto NAS
No, all you need to di is start a Library, then move it to an appropriately formatted disk. You don't need to complete the Library first.
we have an iMac & a MBP, and would love to be able to share the NAS library on our respective iPhotos, and be able to keep "sync'd" up to what the other has done.
Again, noting that the NAS is not the way to go here, you can simply enable iPhoto Sharing or use the same Library with both machines - very easy.
I know that these a pretty short answers, and by all means post back if we can be more helpful.

  • How do I move organized photos from dropbox to iPhoto and share with another user on the same mac?

I have about 3,500 photos sitting in dropbox and just purchased my first mac yesterday.  My husband and I each have our own Ipad and our own user id's on the mac.  I moved two of the folders to Iphoto and it shows up on my screen in the right folders.  However, on my Ipad, it shows all of them under one Photostream and not organized.  They don't show up on my husband's "side of the computer" at all.
    So my questions are:
    1.  How does one mirror their file organization on the Ipad?
    2.  How does one share all of the folders with another user on the same Ipad so they can view folders, and add pictures to the folders if they like?
    Thanks!

    1.  How does one mirror their file organization on the Ipad?
If you use the Photo Stream, the organisation in iPhoto will be lost - there is just one endless stream.  YOu could sync your photos using iTunes. Then you will see the synced albums in the Photos.app on the iPad.
See this link:   iOS and iPod: Syncing photos using iTunes
How does one share all of the folders with another user on the same Ipad so they can view folders, and add pictures to the folders if they like?
On the same iPad?  Do you mean on the same mac?
If you want to share an iPhoto library between two users on the same mac, the iPhoto library should be on a separate disk partition or even better, on a separate external disk. Then you can set the flag "Ignore ownership on this volume" to avoid permission problems. Both of you will be able to browse the iPhoto library and can edit the photos within.
See this support document:  iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
If both of you want to keep separate iPhoto libraries but share the photos, you could share selected albums as Shared PhotoStreams and invite each other to browse them. This would require iOS 7. Do you have iOS 7 on your iPad?  Each Shared Photo Stream will be shown as a separate album on your iPad .

  • Organizing photo one to one?

    Greetings!
Long time mac user, not very well schooled in the down and dirty of the "background stuff"... hope i can get some suggestions!
Within the last 6 months, I purchased an external HD to store old iphoto library contents, used genius bar for guidance, and successfully moved most of my pictures from my macbook air (Mac OS X 10.5.8, iphoto 7.1.5)
While looking for some old photos (on external drive) for kids' school projects, I'm discovering that I have photos in multiple libraries on the HD, many duplicates, and some strays in "photo" folder (not in iphoto). Hubby's macbook also has a significant number of pictures that i'd also like to migrate and condense -- so that pictures from the last 15+ years are organized and centralized. Once that happens, i plan to go through and delete duplicates, label and tag allllll those pix! (whew)
after considering all of these things, i realize that it is NOT a task for me to accomplish alone (mostly because there are 3 different places that the pix are stored... and i don't want to risk losing so many pictures.
i thought that 'one to one' would be perfect, until i realized that it is only for new purchases... genius bar is good, but not long enough for the depth of this project... have applecare, but don't think this fits that niche?
does anyone have suggestions on how/where i can start? (i am not expecting this to be a free service, but want someone knowledgeable who can help and also show me what is happening...
    thanks so much!
    Elin

If you have multiple libraries and wnat to merge them into one library without duplicates you'll need to purchase  iPhoto Library Manager and use it to merge libraries with preferences set to not import duplicates.
You can approach it this way:
1 - with iPLM use the File ➙ Merge menu option.
3 - in the left window select all of the libraries.
4 - in the right window select the New Library option.
5 - check the box Don't import duplicates.
6 - click on the Continue button, name the new library and continue.
This will give you all of your photos in one library with no duplicates. Once you're assured you have all our photos in the new library and the library works as intended you can delete the other, old libraries.
If the new library isn't what was expected you can delete it and try again with fewer libraries each time.

  • TS1314 I have lots of organized photos on my PC and I want to keep them organized to sync to ipad.... how is the best way to do this?

I have spent a lot of time saving, organizing and arranging photos (for the last 7 years) on my PC, and would like to know the best way to transfer these, AND MAINTAIN THE ORGANIZATION OF THE FOLDERS, to my new ipad (and later, my iphone). I have a really good system, and I do not want to have to do it all over again, on the ipad. I DO NOT want to subscribe to another monthly service fee (i.e. the iCloud) but DO have iTunes on my PC.
What is the simplest method to do this ?  I have tried synching, but, each time have lost photos (on my ipad) OR have had NO ORGANIZATION AT ALL to the photos once synced.  I have all these photos (5.6gb) in the My Pictures folder, then subdivided into years, then subdivided into events and months within the years.  So, my transfer of the My Picures folder, completely transfers all of them, but with NO further organization.  Again, I have spent years doing this, and don't want to have to re-invent the wheel.
Can someone advise (or even better, lead me to a youtube video) that accurately shows the best way to do this ?
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
p.s.  I particularly enjoy Dan Nations very informative articles on how to get the best from my products.  And, wish Apple would explain "how it works" regarding the syncing methods on the Operating System.  It is the only thing I "don't get" about using my iPad..... meanwhile I LOVE my new mini ! ! ! ! ! ! ! thanks Apple, for keeping things simple.... Please don't change that !

Correct, it will only be one-level, the Photos app doesn't support sub-albums - the sub-folders photos will be included in the parent's album.
If you select My Pictures at the top of the Photos tab when syncing, then you should get an album for each folder that is directly under it - so if I understand correctly what you described then that would mean an album for 2013, one for 2012 etc. And each of those should include all the photos in the subfolders under it - so 2013 would include the photos from the events and months subfolders under it.
You can't sync them separately, only the contents of the last sync remains on the iPad, by not including a folder in the next photo sync you are effectively telling iTunes that you no longer want that folder/album on the iPad so it will be removed and be replaced by the contents of the new sync (you can't delete synced photos directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next sync).
The app that I use, Photo Manager Pro, allows you to select and copy a folder (via FTP), but you would need to select each subfolder individually, which if you have a lot would be time-consuming (I think that if you select '2013' it would ignore the folders beneath it).

  • Can you get photos onto iTouch 4 from camera?

I am traveling away from my Mack and taking photos with my Canon dig. camera.I also have my iPod iTouch 4 with me.Is it possible to sync the photos from the Canon dig. camera on the iTouch without the use of the Mac?

"Is that an absolute, definite "no"?"
    Yes.
"I was hoping that you could do it with the camera connector kit. "
Hope is good. It is still not a feature of the ipod touch.
"I wanted to buy an ipod touch mainly for this purpose. "
    Then don't.
"You can do it on the ipad."
True. Still not a feature of the ipod touch.
    "Anyone got a second opinion?"
This is not an opinion. It is indeed the way it is.
    Sorry.

  • Can't get photos of itouch onto computer or itunes

Hi, can someone tell me why I do not have a "photos" tab in itunes? My screen size is fine hires etc.  I don't have a photos tab at all under library or under my itouch folders when it is connected.  Also my itouch doesn't show up under devices in iphoto or image capture.  All software is up to date too.  I'm new to using my itouch to take photos so not sure if I'm supposed to be using camera roll, photo stream albums or what, doesn't seem very straight forward at all.  Any advice?

The point is I want to be able to connect the ipod to MY computer!  Plus I am from New Zealand so I see there is no genius bar here.
I just want to know why iphoto is no longer recognising my itouch as a camera? is there a setting on the itouch I have possibly turned off or something?
In the support notes it says to restore my itouch as a new device - so when I have synced my itouch to itunes can I guarantee my photos will be there, as they don't show up in itunes either, just music, apps, movies, TV shows, everything but photos for some reason.

  • How do i transfer photos from itouch to ipad

Trying to help my Mom transfer her photos from her iTouch to her iPad mini?!

OK, so you need to attach the iPad to the computer (Windows or Mac?). Once the device is showing up, click on it and the Device Profile screens will display. Click on the Photos tab. You will see a box that says "Sync Photos from". Select where you are syncing the photos from.
Then click on Selected Photos, Albums, Events, and Faces.
Once you do that, you will be able to go below that and select the specific albums or events you want to sync.
Once they have been selected, click on Apply, and then on Sync.
    Post back with questions!

  • Organizing photos...

i just started using iphoto and im sorting out all my photos and organizing them with the albums inside iphoto. thats all great but when trying to find photos to upload to my myspace they get lost inside date codes. my question is why do they not get saved in a folder under the name of the album they are located in iphoto?

iPhoto is a database application, and not a file browser. Simply, you are not meant to browse the iPhoto Library folder to access your photos. Any changes you might make while there will damage your library. See this from the iPhoto Help, under "About using the iPhoto Library":
+IMPORTANT: There is also an "iPhoto Library" folder located in the Pictures folder in your home folder, outside the iPhoto application. If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise touch files or folders within this folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in the iPhoto application.+
+The files within this folder should only be manipulated by a customer care representative. It is a good idea, however, to routinely back up this entire folder to a CD or external hard disk so you have a copy in case your photos become lost or corrupted for any reason.+
Albums are a collection of pointers telling iPhoto to display a group of photos together. They exist as code in the library's database file and have no real presence in the Finder. If they did, it would necessitate duplication of every photo that exists in more than one album. The benefit of using iPhoto is that you get the power of the albums with no duplication. The photo of you with your dog and your baby at the beach on vacation can be in an album for your dog, one for your baby, one for the beach, one for your vacation, etc. But the actual photo exists only once inside your Library. That's what makes iPhoto more powerful and efficient than a file browser.
To locate your photos, use iPhoto. (Not the Finder or other app.) To prepare photos for uploading to myspace or another website, select them in iPhoto, then do an Export to a Desktop folder. The Export dialog gives you the option to rename the new files or even resize for better uploading performance. Select the exports for uploading, then trash them when you're done. The files remain safe in your Library. You can also get photos out of iPhoto by simply dragging the thumbnail from the iPhoto window to your Desktop - a full-sized copy will be saved on your Desktop. Drag and drop works with some applications, as well.
    Regards.

  • Organizing photos in iphoto 08

    Friends,
I recently converted from a PC. I had thousands of photos on my PC; they were organized into general categories (trips, baby, etc.), which were subdivided into event folders (date and name), which were further subdivided into folders such as RAW, emails, etc. I want to import them into iphoto, and it seems that I cannot import this structure directly. I have determined that the best way to import and roughly maintain the structure is to manually create folders and subfolders using my old naming conventions and then import the images into albums named RAW, edits, that are placed in each subfolder. Any other ideas would be appreciated. However . . .
My question is: can this folder>subfolder>album structure be exported, either to Aperture, if I go that route, or just another location on the computer entirely? What if I want to export the images back to a PC? Can the folder structure be exported? I recognize that the albums just have links, not images, which is why I ask.
    Thanks!
    Steve

    DC Steve
The easiest way to rapidly recreate your folder structure in iPhoto is to
    1. Start at the bottom of your Folder heirarchy and drag a folder of images to the Left-Hand (or Source) pane in iPhoto. There iPhoto will import the pics and create an album of the same name.
    2. Then create the enclosing folders in iPhoto (File -> New Folder) and drag the albums to them.
Some comments: Don't bother creating a date based library - it's redundant. Simply create a Smart Album (File -> New Smart Album) based on the dates, or use the Date search (Click on the Search Window and select date)
As you have the photos already theme based - use Keywords as you import the pics to further enhance your Smart Albums.
So, want to create an Album of pics from John's various Birthday Parties? Well, keyword on the who, what and where basis (When is there already in the Exif data) > John, Birthday, and create a SMart Album. If you're going to use Keywords - and you should - you'll find Keyword Manager very useful.
As for intracting with Aperture, it has a facility to import iPhoto Libraries. You can export (file -> export) individual pics, albums etc, to Folders to recreate something like the structure that you now have, but also you can add the keywords to the files on export too.
