Orientation of Photos-Apple TV

Concerning correctly displaying photos on ATV, I have recently noticed that even though my pictures have been rotated correctly on my Windows PC using photo software, they do not display in the corrected orientation on ATV. All of my older pictures are fine, but I recently purchased a new digital SLR and the trouble began. I have tried re-saving and re-syncing to no avail.
Very perplexing and of course, renders the ATV useless for slide shows or picture viewing. BTW-It appears all my older photos and photos not shot using the Canon or Iphone are oriented correctly. Any ideas?
DETAILS: I have a new Canon D40 and have observed this problem. I used my photo software to make sure the photos were correctly oriented and then re-saved them. I re-sync'd the ATV. I did this numerous time. I also have the same problem with the Iphone pictures I have loaded. All pictures look fine on the computer. But appear sideways on the ATV.

This is a known issue, and Apple has a fix posted here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305236
HOWEVER, that fix is Mac/iPhoto specific. It is useless for me. I have the same issues, however I use Picasa on WinXP for my photo management. I agree with the previous poster, Apple probably just needs to improve the AppleTV's EXIF parsing because there are a lot of variations out there based on app.
The weird thing is that some photos are displayed correctly, and some are not. I haven't researched enough into whether it's based on Camera model, or which application rotated it (Picasa, Photoshop, WinXP Browser, etc..)

I created a book in iBooks Author using the Photo Book template. When I rotate to portrait orientation, the photo or widget disappears and a table of contents appears with only the interactive media showing.

Thanx for the prompt response, KT. I have indeed seen that thread, only just after I posted the question.
I have spent hours on the phone with what I now know is a call center in Texas on this question.
I think Apple could be a little more "hands on" with iBooks Author users, and it should also be pointed out that landscape photos will not display in portrait mode.
In my case, I used gallery widgets to display vertical photos, since they look better in portrait mode.
But instead of simply rotating, the page disappears and a TOC of interactive media appears. The gallery behaves as expected when tapped. This is not what I expected, but since the gallery works, I can live with it.
Right now I have "tickets" telling me to "fix" this "problem or to disable portrait mode.
I don't want to disable portrait mode.
Will Apple accept the books if I tell them this is not an "error?"

  • Changing thumbnail image orientations in photo page

    Hello Guys!
I have created a new photo page in iweb09 and tried dragging some images from the image folder on my system. The Problem is i have few portrait oriented images but all of them display as landscape in the thumbnail gallery. The flip option in the inspector does not solve the problem too.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do those photos display correctly if dragged from your HD into a Safari window? If not use Xee to losslessly rotate the photos and then add to iWeb's photo page. See if that won't produce correct thumbnails.
Or import those photo into iPhoto which will create a rotated modified version and thumbnail and add that to iWeb via the Media Browser.

  • How do I fix orientation of photos after they were changed after importing iPhoto library into new Photo app in Yosemite?

When I switched over to the new Photos app in Yosemite v10.10.3 and imported my iPhoto library to it, random photos in my library had their orientation changed. Some are upside down and some are turned on their side. I have a huge photo library, so this is frustrating. Hoping I don't have to go in and fix each one. I tried rebuilding my library by lauching Photo holding down option+command, but that didn't fix anything. Please help! Mahalo!

You do not have duplicate albums or photos.
    Photo Stream
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/photo-stream.html
The Camera Roll is for photos/videos that were captured by your iPhone, and for a photo saved from a received email, MMS, or from a website. These photos are also placed in the Photo Stream to be synced with your computer and/or with another iOS 5 device. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
All photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process are stored in the iPhone's Photo Library. The photos in the folders or albums below include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos are not duplicated taking up double the storage space. This way you can view the photos in a particular folder or album below only by selecting the folder or album, or you can view all photos in all folders or albums be selecting Photo Library.
    This cannot be changed.
Removing photos or folders/albums of photos from your iPhone that were transferred from your computer via the Tunes process is done in the same way - via the iTunes sync process.

  • Orientation ofSaved Photos?

It seems that every time I try for a saved photo it winds up in portrait, regardless of the screen at the time. All too often this means that the rot lock has to be used to view that photo later on.
The only saved photo we have in that album in landscape is one that my wife did, absolutely accidentally, not aware she was doing it, just in the middle of looking at emailed pics.
Related — is there a way to rotate pics and have them retain the new orientation?

Yes, thanks — what I found was a free iPad app called PhotoPad by ZAGG, and it does work a treat. It's a really nice workaround, but i'd still love to know how my wife got it to work.
Meanwhile, will address this issue cir Apple Feedback avenues.

  • Photo orientation in photo grid

All of my photos in the photo grid are horizontal. Is there a way to change some to a vertical orientation?

The files are from a camera with the auto-rotate function, right? Have the photos been imported into iPhoto and you're adding them from the media pane in iWeb?
One fix would be to upload the files to a folder on the desktop and batch rotate those portrait oriented files with PhotoTool CM. Then import into iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?

  • Orientation of photos

I have an iMac that I am using to scan phots and negatives, my scanner is an HP Scanjet G4050.  I have loaded the lastest drivers for the iMac and the scanner appears to work properly, the thumbnails in the toolbar section of the scanner window are orientated correctly, however, when they are saved or sent to the Pictures folder on the iMac, the orientation is incorrect (evey photo is being saved with a horizontal orientation, even though the photo was taken with a vertical orientation.  This is causing significant distortion.  How do I correct this orientation problem?

Hi, might be iPhoto doing it, but try Vuescan...

  • Ios8 Photo - Apple come on....

Wow - a nice IOS8 for lots of stuff - but what happened when you reworked the Photo App??
Bring back the function of Camera Roll and Photostream!
(would also be nice to have my pictures back which I lost from Camera Roll after the upgrade!!)
Nice idea of sharing all my pictures with all my devices BUT I would prefer to do my own sharing or at least be able to choose between all or as I want..:)
What happened with Albums Synced from my Mac? - there is no sorting on names anymore - so all my albums are one big mess...
Apple - come on, let us have your input and even better comments of when you rework this so its useful again..:)

I know that Apple not official respond from here! - but they anyway "spy" on the forum..
I have send feedback to Apple - and if they act as always - its takes a few weeks and some of the issues will be solved..:) maybe the programmer even find that he "missed" the sorting of album names

  • Ios7 deleted my photos - Apple you have let us down with this latest software

Not a great experience with the latest software update. Having never had a problem with apple software updates over the last 5 years or so the latest version has been a huge disappointment, so much so that I do question how apple can make it so easy for important personal data to be lost. It seems to me that if there isnt a £ sign attached to an app or a file that it is incredibly easy (too easy!) for errors to occur resulting in the loss of data. In my case nearly 3 years of photos. Around 1100 photos which iTunes had said had backed up. I took these on my iPhone and went to back them up via iTunes. My iphone makes a great camera but i hadnt got round to storing them on the Cloud.
Having visited the apple store, i am told nothing can be done to get those photos back and I am heartbroken. During the back up and installation phase of the ios7 there was an error (at the apple end, not locally) which meant I had to start again. however the backup completed OK with no signs that anything was missing. Apps, contacts, email, everything else is there with all the settings in place. everything except my precious photos.
I tried a few times and then went to restore but by then itunes had used up so many GBs on my C: drive and after a few attempts I tried directing itunes to my D drive but it didnt like it.
My computer, a pc has never had a problem before ios7, and prior to this terribly disappointing experience I was contemplating buying a Mac to match my other apple devices (apple TV and iphone) but having seen how easy it is to lose precious items I am reconsidering.
Needless to say between the cloud, a seperate hard disk, and a pc I will make sure I back up in not one but three places before I use Apple again.
Apple this is not your finest hour. I would like a message back please. Your software updates int he past have never EVER posed a problem like this - so why now? People follow all the steps you provide, and back up, but even the back up you provide via iTunes isnt without its faults. You launch all this wizzy amazing technology yet you build little in in the way of error messages and error prevention. Whether something wasnt working with your servers or my pc we will never know, but something should have flashed up to say my photos were not backed up.

Contact a repairer in your area.. we can fix them cheaper than data recovery.. and you will get a working TC back as good as new.. in fact we can make it better than new because we can fix the fundamental flaw .. no cooling.

  • Orientation of photo in folder on iMac does not match the orientation of photo in preview of the sidebar of a HP Scanjet G4050?

The orientation on the HP Scanjet G4050 preview on the sidebar is Vertical and when it gets saved to the folder on the iMac is Horizontal.  This causes great distortion of the photo and renders them unusable.

    Contact HP.

  • Lightroom not "remembering" orientation of photos?

A few days ago I opened a wedding that I was working on and Lightroom started to rotate all my Portrait images back to landscape.  I had already corrected the orientation of the photos days ago.  I was about 2/3 the way through all my images when this happened.  Fortunately all my other adjustments, exposure, cropping, WB etc were kept.
If I open past shoots now, the same thing happens.  Again, all the other data is kept, just the orientation is going back to default.
Is there a chance that I have a corrupt catalog?  Can I load one of my backup catalogs that I did prior to this happening?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I'd first suspect the image Previews being corrupt, especially the file:  Previews.lrdata/thumbnail-cache.db
Try deleting the thumbnail cache, reopen LR, and choose a folder to rebuild previews, to check if that's it.

  • Slideshow and orientation of photos

I am about to create a DVD with a slideshow of some of my pictures. I am using PSE and PRE both in version 8. Most is working fine except that some (not all) of my photos taken i portrait view are rotated 90 degrees to much. I myself are really not doing anything with this, just using the auto-rotate functionality in my two camera's when the picture is taken (let the pictures be tagged). All pictures are shown fine in the organiser, all ar shown fine when they are displayed as a slideshow on screen on my PC - BUT if I am trying to create a videosequence out of them (by using the create-functionality), some of the autorotated portrait pictures are rotated once again, but not all! (Probably due to two different cameras)
Have found one clue for earlier version: Rotate to and from once - to no avail
    Any other tip out there?
Have tried to create a slideshow/videosequence directrly in PRE8, then I get a different problem as the pictures are not scaled down to the screen size...

Multiple people have reported problems with Portriat Mode photos which have an Orientation Indicator when using the PSE to PRE workflow for slideshows with version 8.  Here are some comments and suggestions based on previous experiences that I have seen in forums and emails.
Have found one clue for earlier version: Rotate to and from once - to no avail
    Any other tip out there?
1- APPROACH 1 -- The rotate approach has worked for other people when
-- that rotate (to and from)is done in the Organzer thumbnail area BEFORE the photo is placed in the Slide Show Editor (of PSE) and
-- when the Organizer Preference of "Rotate JPEGs using Orientation Metadata" is NOT checked
When using this approach you can multiple select the thumbnails of the photos to be rotated.
2 - there may be other possibilies of the timing for doing the rotate that will work.
What I suggest is that you post when you did the rotate and whether it was done in the Photoshop Elements Editor, Premiere Elements or Organizer workspace.
3- FYI - You say that you are unsure why some portrait photos have this problem and other photos do not. If both cameras were set for using an Orientation indicator, then a possible explanation is that SOME of your photos had been edited by the Photoshop Elements editor and others had not. The photos processed by the Photoshop Elements editor are likely to look OK in Priemere Elements. (note: not sure if this is 100% but I am not aware of specific types of exceptions).
3 - APPROACH 2 -- for the slide show that you have already built, you can try the approach of initiating an Edit in Photoshop Elements for the individual photos which have this problem.
For individual problematic photo from within either the Slide Show Editor or from within Premere Elements, select that photo and choose the option to edit within the Photoshop Elements editor, adjust as desired and save.
Note that after your slideshow has been transferred and is in Premiere Elements (timeline and scencline), changes must be made using Premiere Elements.  (you can't bring individual changes over from the slide show editor that you used from Photoshop Elements in to Premiere Elements).

  • Orientation for photos on iPod

My iPod photos seem to be locked into portrait view. I haven't used it much, and not for a while, but I thought as I turned the iPod around, the orientation changed to landscape. It doesn't now.  I have synced them from my mac.
Also, when I attempt to sync new photos, I don't get the option highlighted to only download "Selected photos" so it attempts to sync the entire collection which is huge.

Is your screen locked in landscape mode? Copied from page 27 iPod_touch_iOS4_User_Guide
Lock the screen in portrait orientation (iPod touch 3rd generation or later): Double-click the Home button, flick the bottom of the screen from left to right, then tap lock icon
The portrait orientation lock  icon appears in the status bar when the screen orientation is locked.
Did yo try to delete the photo cache and try to sync photos after that? Photo Sync creates iPod photo Cache

  • The orientation of the apple store on my iPad appears to look limited and like an iPhone.  I deleted the apple store app and reinstalled but no luck.  Also the screen doe not rotate

My apple store app will not change orientation when I rotate my iPad and appears limited .  I deleted the app and reinstalled but didnot fix it

The "Apple Store App" is an iPhone app and while it works on the iPad, you cannot change the orientation of the app. You can enlarge it by tapping on the 2X in the bottom corner, but you cannot rotate the app on the screen.

  • Issues with Photo orientation after syncing IPad

Just wondering if anyone has had issues with the ipad changing the orientation of photos following syncing ipad with itunes. What I have been experiencing is that although the photo is in portrait orientation in iphoto on the imac, this same photo after syncing of the ipad with itunes on this same imac machine, the photo when opened up on the ipad is in landscape orientation. Have consulted with senior advisors at apple but not sure if this is an iphoto problem or an itunes/ipad sync problem? seems to me that whatever the orientation of the photo is in iphoto, that when you sync the ipad the photo should transfer with the same orientation. anyone else having this problem?

There have been several posts here and on the iphone site about this.
The jury is still out what the fix will be. Some posts say it's a problem with the metadata and the orientation data contained there-in. I can not confirm that.
I do know that when I take a landscape screen snap, the orientation is wrong when I email or upload the photo to my computer.
