OS X 4.6 - Erratic Track Pad

Just installed OS 10.4.6 on my four macs. I had no problems except my 15" Alum. PowerBook G4 (1.5 ghz, 1 gb Ram) where my track pad has become very erratic to the point of not being useful. The cursor movement is very erratic. Yet the cursor moves smoothly when I use a USB mouse.
Rebuilt permissions several times including using the original OS 10.4.3 disc. All to no avail.
By the way, the update went without a problem on my iBook (1.33 ghz, 1 gb Ram).
Any suggestions?

I have read that after updating, you should only repair permissions from the desktop disk utility, not the original install disk.
Try disk utility>Repair Disk from the install disk.

For no reason at all, all of a sudden the track pad arrow is erratic and highlights words and gives the dictionary definition, moves the pages around and is driving me nuts! I am not a computer geek. I just want it to work. Any suggestions?

  • Anyone know how to disable a track pad?

I and several others have problems with erratic track pad behavior, and the posts I've seen over the past couple of months haven't gotten any effective replies.
The cursor behavior is the same as if you were using a mouse and the left button sticks on; you can jiggle it off with an amount of effort that's unacceptable for routine use and it usually sticks again immediately. If I plug in a mouse, the same problems remain, which I interpret as meaning that the trackpad malfunction keeps the cursor control in the "left-button-on" state and the mouse input is just an additional signal.
Others who have reported similar trackpad problems also say their problems continue when using mice or external trackpads. I'm 99% sure that if communication between trackpad and processor is shut off, the mouse will control the cursor normally.
I don't see anything in the System Preferences to do this, can it be done from the Console?

That would imply that there are human-based reasons for the constant relocation of setting controls from version to version of applications and operating systems. It would be satisfying to believe this, just as it used to be nice to anticipate Santa's presents and Easter eggs. This does not seem consistent with these bizarre alterations in Apple software, however, and if you look at the revision patterns for software from a certain firm in the state of Washington, you will see that human decision making processes cannot explain the patterns for the extremely large number of "snipe hunt" events reported by users. One disturbing hypothesis is that the code modifying entities may have entered from an adjacent multidimensional universe and are slipping up by assuming that we can see links in orthogonal space. It goes without saying that I have a bad feeling about this. Where's the Doctor? We may need him.

  • HT203171 Track pad is erratic, sometimes scrolling without touching the pad. Also highlighting chunks of my Thesis with the touch of a finger. Frustrating because I have accidentally deleted during this out of control mechanism with the track pad.

My Mac Book Air has developed an erratic process with the track pad. Sometimes the page scrolls without touching the pad, great chunks of my Thesis can be highlighted and sometimes I delete without realising. Does anyone else have this problem. The Tech wants to replace my track pad today, not sure what to do?

  • Track pad responsive at first then erratic

18 month old 16 inch macbook pro.  Track pad responsive when computer first turned on then after a few minutes track pad erratic and unresponsive.  Cursor floats, stubborn movement.  When external mouse plugged in, all works fine.  How much does it cost to replace track pad?   Any first aid tips?

It could also be a swollen battery, that is pushing at the trackpad. By the way, Apple has no 16" MBP.

  • Erratic cursor and track pad when using 220v on MBA

    Hello
I am travelling in Europe with my MBA, and I have noticed that when it is plugged into a 220v outlet the whole case has a slight electric charge (and a very slight vibration), this apparently makes the track pad very erratic, with the cursor jumping all over when I try to move it.  I have resorted to unplugging the MBA when I want to use.
    Any thoughts/solutions on this?
    Thank you,
    Peter

3 prong grounded extension cord may help.

  • Magic Mouse barely/erratically tracks on any surface..

erratically tracks on any mouse pad, bu tracks perfectly on a magazine or on a desktop...id say "Use it on desktop..duh" - but its scuffing the **** out of the finish on my desk so now what?
I love this thing but it refuses to work on any standard mouse pad (tried 3). Faulty sensor?

    Hello s:
Actually my magic mouse works best on a mouse pad.
Try trashing a preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restarting (probably not the problem). If that does not help, take it to an Apple store (test on their systems) or call Applecare for a replacement.

  • HT5815 Updated to 10.8.5 and now I cannot control my macbook pro with the track pad.  Any solutions?

Like any other time, the App Store said there was a new update and asked if I wanted to update now.  I did.  Unfortunately, the update, after rebooting, has rendered the system unusable.  I can no longer control the system with the track pad.  The arrow is moving itself around the screen and the Launchpad periodically opens itself and gets locked in that mode.  I've rebooted, launched in safe mode, and zapped PRAM.  Nothing has changed.  I experienced the same thing in safe mode, no change.  Anyone else having these problems?  Not sure what to do next.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Some people have reported that they fixed a malfunctioning trackpad by pressing down on all four corners at once. I can't confirm, but it does no harm to try.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.
