OS X jumps automatically to Finder
Hello folks...
I have an iMac with OSX 10.8 on it (yes, all Updates installed). Sometimes (or very often) when I switch to an other desktop, it jumps back to the one where the Finder is open. This happens also when I'm working in a Fullscreen-Programm (without switching first).
So, I would be happy, if there's someone who can help me, knows this issue, or has the same problem.....
Greetings
Manuel
I have had this when another desktop app or dialogue is invoked, for example asking for a password, running an update, a notification of an event in an email etc. Though if it is invoking Finder specifically, there may be some event occurring there.
I read that it may be due to DS_Store files and that running the automation script in OnyX may fix it by deleting these amongst other things.

Windows 7 PC's doesn't show up automatically in Finder
Windows 7 PC's doesn't show up in Finder
I know there are probably a lot of threads about this already but the ones I have read haven't helped me with my problem yet.
The problem I am facing is that my Windows 7 PC's doesn't show up automatically in Finder.
What works:
1. I can see all of the computers (Mac and Windows) on the network on my Windows machines, if I look under Network in Windows.
2. I can see my Mac computers in Finder under Shared
3. I can CMD+K connect to all of the computers on the network using SMB, both with entering the name of the computer or the IP
4. I can ping all of the IP's on the network
What doesn't work:
1. Windows 7 machines doesn't show up automatically in Finder
2. I can't ping hostnames in Network Utility, can only ping IP's - it says cannot resolve hostname
What I have tried:
1. Turned on SMB sharing on OSX
2. Edited /private/etc/hosts to include Windows PC's
3. Turned off all firewalls on Windows, OSX and Router
4. Installed Bonjour on Windows machines
5. A bunch of other things...
Theories:
1. The best theory I can come up with is that OSX is having trouble with NETBIOS and that's why the Windows computers aren't showing up in OSX but I can still see the OSX computers in Windows 7. And the reason why I can see the other Macs in OSX is that they use something other than NETBIOS to broadcast their existence on the network.
2. The Gods are against me...
It should be said that I had it work for a very short while, but then i changed something and couldn't reverse it.
I hope someone can help me find the little thing I am missing to get this thing to work.See my response in this Discussion string.

I am using my ipad 2 ( bought in USA) for about 3 years. 2 weeks back the touch gesture was completely out of control and the screen was jumping automatically to so many applications. I attempted to get original settings through settings menu, but unfortunately while resuming when I typed a pass code the touch gesture , without control it typed unknown passcode and while confirming the passcode as well same thing happened.
Now my Iapd2 is disabled and itunes also not recognizing my ipad.
I kindly request you to help me to fix the issue. Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

Networked Vista computers not appearing automatically in Finder
Hello,
I am having a hard time getting any of my networked Vista machines to show up in the left column of the finder menu. I can access the Leopard's public folder from any of the Vista machines, and I can access any of the Vista machines through smb://"computer name" or smb://ip - they're just not automatically showing up in finder.
I have all the computers on the same workgroup (including the Mac), and I have network discovery, public folder / file sharing, and printer sharing enabled on everything (including the Mac). I have turned the Vista firewall off completely and even changed inbound / outbound permissions in the advanced menu, but nothing makes the computers appear automatically in the finder menu.
I found this article and, according to it, I've done everything correctly.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1277379
It seems I have come to the same conclusion they have:
+"7) So all of the above seems to be great, and you still don't see things in your finder.+
+Can you connect manually with option-k by BOTH IP address (smb://192.168.15.109) and hostname (smb://mastershake)?+
+If so, the issue is with browsing only. If you can do both of the above (IP AND NetBIOS name) and you still cannot see entries in Network, there may be a real bug. I've noticed that Vista machines (with Network Discovery enabled) don't always show up correctly, while XP systems show up every time."+
What do you guys think?

My issue went all the way up to an "Apple Engineer."
They told me 10.5 does not actively search for SMB shares.
I say "That is impossible because XP is automatically listed in the Finder sidebar anytime a computer is available."
I get an 'over the phone shrug' and that was the end of the call.
Can some network genius out there help me?!? -
After Update Bizarre jump back to Finder Behavior
I have always dutifully used Software Update to stay on top of things.
In some cases it has revealed problems. What a surprise.
The most recent update to 10.4.5, or the latest Security update has introduced an annoying behavior that doesnt make much sense and I wonder if anybody else has encountered it.
If I have multiple windows open (Safari, Mail, iPhoto...) after less than 30 secs. the user interface always jumps back to the Finder, no matter what I am doing. As I type this if I hesitate for more than a few seconds the keyboard wont respond because I am in the Finder again...GRRRR...irritating behavior. You then have to click on the window (Safari whatever it was you were doing) to then continue scrolling, typing whatever.
Anybody else? No its not Screen saver activating its like 15-30 sec delay and Bam back to the Finder.
I have reported this to AppleCare (mine just expired) and the case number is 60078651...the squeaky wheel gets greased if you experience the same issue use this case number to complain en masse.Hi, f/64.
1. Well, you can delete the Finder preferences (see also my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ) as macjack suggests, but I don't think that's the issue.
2. It sounds like some application or background process is actually switching the focus to Finder. Since this seems to have arisen after recent updates, this makes me suspect a Startup or Login Item that has been rendered incompatible by the update. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
3. A good way to avoid such problems with updates is to follow the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
4. You've not provided any information concerning your Mac itself: model, RAM, if you are using a third-party keyboard or mouse (brands of each), etc. so more details about your system would be helpful.
5. A couple of "off the wall" ideas:
• An errant folder action script. If you've not enabled any of these, don't worry about that.
• Some people have experimented with installing FrontRow on Macs which did not come equipped with such via a variety of hacks posted on the Internet. This has caused some problems, including the loss of all menu extras, the icons on the right side of the menu bar, and repeated crashes of SystemUIServer, which controls menu extras.
6. After the problem occurs, you may want to check Console for clues.
Good luck!

Automatically set finder icon size
Hi,
there is a apple script or something that can automaticcaly change icon size for folders and documents in finder? My target is to show the max number of icon inside the finder window...
thanksok, thanks, but is not what i want.
Think if in osx is built in a function that for the number of icons inside the folder show in finder , automatically resize icons (with a min and a max size presetted) relative to the number of icons in that folder.
Sometime i have one icon and the size is too small... sometime i have to many icons and the size is too large and i must scroll everytime.. is not very userfriendly...
another question... is possible in launchpad have a spotlight textfield that allow me to write the name of the app i want to find?? sometime i have app inside folder or in another page and is not simple find immediatly the app iwant...
thanks -
Although these problems don't seem to be related, they all started occurring at the exact same time. To reiterate
1) Any time I try to mount a .dmg file, the setup window automatically closes
2) Any time I go into Finder and click on "Applications" button in the sidebar, the Finder window automatically closes
3) Flash player does not work in any browser
I have tried repairing permissions and this doesn't work.
Can anyone help?Have you repaired the Disk. You must boot into the Recovery HD to repair the disk. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

Automate face finding & cropping
Hi,
I am looking for a software or plug-in for Photoshop which can automatically find face on photo and then crop it (if cropping of the face is not perfect it is ok) or make a portrait. Then save result which can be used by Photoshop scripts.
There is something in Photoshop Elements (face tagging), but I dont see the way how I can save tagged (cropped) face and the use in Photoshop CS3 scripting.
Thank you in advance for any help.I second this request. I have lots of uses for facial recognition in PS.
It would be really cool to be able to apply filters/plugins with settings specific for facial regions and different settings for other areas of the image. -
ITunes jumps automatically in foreground
Hey Boys and Girls,
since i've updatet my iTunes to 10.2.1.1 the iTunes Window jumps in the foreground automatically every 20-30 seconds.
What can I do? It's really annoying, especially when I have to write something.
Greetz from GermanyHi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is a long-standing behaviour of iTunes when it has certain dialog/progress boxes open. I agree it is annoying. Sadly there is nothing you can do other than note which processes cause it to happen and submit feedback. If you're going to do a major import of files, for example, then don't do it when you want to use your computer for anything else.

Cursor jumps to Safari 'Find' using Facebook
Possibly in association with the installation of Safari Extension Click to Flash, after each first letter typed, the cursor jumps to the search mode in safari (Command F) and continues what I am typing there. If I enter a few sentences in a thread and lift the cursor to correct an error, it will happen again. This ONLY happens in Facebook!
A solution would be greatly appreciated.
JGJust wanted to chime in with my findings, for others that may come across this thread with the same issue. In my case, the very first keypress (a period character seems to trigger it reliably) invokes Safari's find-on-page mode instantly, finding the character that was pressed.
I also saw this on 10.9.5, only in Safari (Firefox and Chrome are not affected), and only on the Facebook page.
I haven't upgraded to Yosemite yet for various reasons, so continuing to troubleshoot this issue in Mavericks.
Here's what I found so far:
A full Safari Reset made no difference; issue continued
It seems user-specific: other users (existing or new) on the same box don't see it
It's not Safari Extension related; happens with Extensions off, and with all Extensions removed -
When I connect a 256MB jump drive to my keyboard USB, Finder takes a minute to open show its contents and then will continue to spin. It will not allow access to any files on the drive and I get Finder (not responding).
Also, when this happens, Relaunching Finder does not work. What should be done instead?
Thanks!Right--I don't really care about the jump drive. But what can be done if relaunching Finder does nothing--other than doing a hard shut down?

How to go to footnote number automatically using Find or GREP
Hello,
I have been looking for how to search within footnotes. I have a Paragraph Style for my footnotes and can easily search anything within the citation but it won't take me straight to the number because I need to know what page it is at.
For instance the client is reading off his Microsoft Word doc and wants to edit the footnote no. 55. I don't know which page this footnote is at in the Indesign file, unless I just use the basic ^F with the "Find/Change" and manually go through it from no.1 until I reach no.55.
Isn't there a faster way to do this?
Thanks a bunch! Here is a tiny Javascript that prompts you for a footnote number.
Caveats: it only works with numbered footnotes, not with "a", "b", "c" or "*", "**", "***" or "i", "ii", "iii" or any of the other numbering styles. It simply enumerates the current footnotes starting from '1' -- even if you have it start at another number, or have it restart numbering on every new page or section.
In addition, since every story (continuous thread of text) contains its own set of footnotes, you have to click the text cursor into your current story.
var notenum = prompt ('Footnote', '1-'+String(app.selection[0].parentStory.footnotes.length));
if (notenum && notenum.match(/^\d+$/))
app.select(app.selection[0].parentStory.footnotes.item(Number(notenum)-1).insertionPoints[0]);
app.layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage = app.layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage;
(Edit: Added the allowed range in the prompt) -
Mounted Volumes doesn't show automatically in Finder Window
Hi, is it a preference that allows me to have access directly to my mounted volume (like in OS 10.5) in the Finder windows? Right now, i have to drag them manually so they show next time i mount them. I would like to see the mounted volumes in the Devices section, below my Hard Drive icon.
I know i can access them via the Shared section but thats one more click to do… yeah, i'm lazy
Thanks
BenLet's take one more shot before we admit defeat...
Go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Drag both files to the desktop
Then, restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
