OSX Hangs on Startup when USB Devices Connected

Hi,
I'm running 10.5.4 (having trouble updating to .5) and whenever i restart my macbook with a flash drive or external HD connected it won't start up properly. It gets to the screen with the apple logo and then it stays at a blue screen until i pull out the USB devices. I also have an external firewire drive which does not effect startup.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm ... I am having similar problems when I try to boot from an external firewire drive. Using SuperDuper to create/maintain a boot backup on external drive. Now when I try to boot from external drive to verify OK, hangs at blue screen. Maybe will try setting to use external drive before restart and see if that forces through. Not an ideal long term as rather negates the point of the backup in case of catastrophic failure of internal drive. AND a touch dangerous if boot still doesn't work ?
I don't have any USB drives or flash drives attached, and WD raid is switched off.

  • System reboots when USB device connected

I have a new motherboard (MS-7104), and sometimes when a USB device is plugged into the USB ports whilst the computer is turned on, the computer will restart.  This happens around 50% of the time, and there is no pattern to the device or port that is used.
The USB ports worked fine on my old MSI motherboard, so it would appear to be something related either to the new motherboard or to the drivers.
I have the latest motherboard drivers and Windows updates, so I don't know what else to try, or why this problem is occuring. The USB jumpers are connected correctly onto the motherboard.

Power Supply is the silver box that you plug your AC power main cord to your chassis, and it has many cables coming out to plug to your motherboard to provide power. That's the power supply. It does not have any software interface for you to access to know what it is. You need to physically take a look at the power supply itself, and tell what each voltage rail's current rating is - +12V, +5V, +3.3V, -12V, 5V-stby.

What's weird is that the iPod Nano seems to be the exception to the rule. But then I realized that it never really goes to sleep when it's plugged in - it's always on (but with a dim "charge complete" screen).
This is reproducible as **** here for me but bloody annoying that I have to keep unplugging my devices all the time.
    C'mon Apple, let's move!

This is a user to user forum. This is a well known bug that has been around since Mac OS 8.6 with many third party USB devices. They don't understand the low power mode when the USB ports go to sleep. About the only thing you can do is tell the manufacturers of the said devices they need to find out from Apple the USB standard they use for low powered devices so they can upgrade the firmware for the said devices so that they can handle low power mode.

  • HT3986 Why my Boot Camp keep saying that there is no USB device connected ?

I use Mac Air, and with a external CD device. When I try to install Window 7, it keep saying that there is no USB device connected when there is.

Unfortunately not all external CD drives work the same, have you tried another cable or used another slot?
Have you tried using a USB flash drive? You should have an option now in Boot Camp Assistant to install the W7 installer onto a USB drive as well as the Boot Camp drivers.

  • "Malfunctioning USB device connected" - Zen To

Hi, I've been using my Zen Touch fine for a few weeks now, but recently changed my home computer's OS to XP Home. After reinstalling all the Zen Touch drivers and s/w (including the latest versions off this website) the computer no longer recognises the player when i attatch it to any of my USB ports.
Not only this, but two other computers that previously worked fine with the player no longer recognise it either, all saying the same message: "Unknown or malfunctioning USB device connected"
No matter how many times I try to unistall/reinstall drivers etc I can no longer get any computer that previosly worked with the player to now recognise it.
Anybody have any idea what has happened?
I have a feeling that I had the player connected the first time I installed the drivers after changing my OS, would this have the fatal effect that I'm now experiencing?
I can still listen to the music that's on the player fine, I just cant get a PC to recognise it to add any new files!
I wanted to try and reload the OS on the player through rescue mode, but am worried that this will make things worse since I cant recognise the player on a PC to reload the OS from. Any thoughts on this?

Tried a disk cleanup on the player? To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
There's lots of other connection advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.

When i try to boot i freezes at the detecting usb devices when i have a usb device connected. It does with any usb device. But when i boot up without any usb devices connected then i boot fine and i can connect the devices right after the detection of usb devices. How can that be?

Googled on "computer not booting with usb code 6b38" and found this:
     Quote
    ****SLOW BOOT-UP in POST SCREEN****
P.S. If you see the BIOS code 6B38 in the bottom right corner of the screen, this is a indication that USB Legancy support is enabled in the BIOS. If this is enabled and you have any usb devices attached such as a external USB Hard drive, your system will take ages to go through the POST boot screens.
So disable this setting in the BIOS and the system will then boot in a matter of Seconds
    From:
    http://www.rebelshavenforum.com/sis-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=30;t=000250
Also try and see if a clear CMOS will help, some people suggested that from a old post from MSI forum here, saying its bios 1.3 thats bugged.
So if disabling doesnt work, perhaps down/upgrading BIOS might.

My Mac Mini doesn't start up when usb devices are plugged in.
It just shows the "White screen of Death" when 1 or more usb ports are used.

Haha. I just restarted it and it worked. Instead of turning it off and on. But thanks.
    By the way:
Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described below. In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
So I hope it is fixed for now. But could someone also post another solution?

  • HT202731 Unstable operation when 2 or more USB devices connected to usb port on a MacBook Pro running Yosemite

I have tried connecting a number of devices to my MacBook Pro but I have found if I try to connect 2 or more using either usb ports or a usb hub the computer reports 'disk not ejected properly' and sometimes it will fail to recognise the device and remove it from the desktop or it stalls operation and I have to turn the computer off at the power button.
I have tried erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system.
I have done various types of reset suggested by apple support.
The computer has been to an Apple dealer who has tested the hardware but found nothing due to the intermittent nature of the problem.
I have operated the computer with only the software originally installed on it present.
Could it be possible that a virus could be present on the usb devices I am trying to connect?
My computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk Macintosh HD
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    Operating System X Yosemite 10.10.1
Devices I have connected to USB ports all USB 3.0 compatible in a variety of combinations:-
7 port superspeed USB 3.0 hub (powered).
4 port Inateck USB 3.0 portable hub (not powered).
Buffalo ultra portable 500Gb USB 3.0 hard drive.
Seagate Expansion portable 500Gb USB 3.0 hard drive.
Seagate Expansion desktop 2Tb USB 3.0 hard drive (powered).
Seagate Expansion desktop 3Tb USB 3.0 hard drive (powered).
ScanDisk Cruiser Edge 16Gb USB stick.
ScanDisk Cruiser Edge 32Gb USB stick.
Hewlett Packard 16Gb USB stick. (This causes an instant crash now.)

    Why?
    - Because when I'm editing/ rendering lots of HD video everyday, I don't want to share system resources between virtual machines... I want the entire system's resources devoted to what I'm doing.
    - I don't want to spend anymore money than I have to in order to buy one of the faster virtual systems. Not to mention, I've had a bad experience with Parralels in the past and I'd rather not use one again.
    - I really don't want to clutter up my system anymore than I have to for a project that's only going to take a few weeks.
    - I don't mind swapping hard drives... it takes two minutes, and I have an empty ssd just sitting on the shelf.
So, back to my original question. Can I just swap the computer's drives, then install Ubuntu on the second drive and be good to go without any harm to my MacBook Pro or OSX on the other drive (which wouldn't be connected when Ubuntu is running)?
    Thanks.

  • T400s Fails to shutdown when docked AND usb device connected to Dock

Title says it all, have a T400s running Windows XPSP2 that shuts down and or reboots fine UNLESS it is connected to a docking station with any usb device attached (to the dock). BIOS has been flashed, machine built from scratch using enterprise license and latest drivers from Lenovo's website. Microsoft patches have also been applied.
    Any clues?

We had a Lenovo tech on site today to see this problem.  The problem seems to show when there are USB devices in the dock and the camera software is installed.  If you uninstall the software or remove all of the USB devices from the dock then the laptop shuts down properly.  We tried two different USB mice as well as a flash drive and came up with the same result each time.  Even with the camera software removed from the laptop the integrated camera still works in Windows through the camera center.

  • USB device connected with keyboard gets disconnected due to an overcurrent condition

    Hi,
bought a new 13,3" Retina Macbook Pro.
When I have my wired Apple Keyboard connected to the Macbook and connect an usb-device with the keyboard, from time to time the keyboard and the usb-device gets diconnected and mac osx tolds me, that there is not enough power for the devices. After a few seconds the keyboard and the device gets mounted again.
In the console I could see the following log:
kernel: USB Notification:  The hub "Keyboard Hub" has reported an overcurrent condition.  Port 3 has been disabled.
    Is my Macbook broken?

You can try SMC and NVRAM resets:

It will do no hard to do this but a genius bar appointment may be your best option.  I suspect this is a hardware problem.
    Ciao.

  • MBP will not boot up with USB devices connected

I have a late 2010 MBP 15 10.7.2 that will no longer boot up if any USB devices are attached. A dongle, a hub, anything. It goes to the gray screen and stays there. Disconnecting all USB devices the MBP will boot up. Then connecting the USB devices they work. It just will not boot up with anything connected to the USB ports. I have reset PRAM, SMC and fixed disk permissions. Made sure login items are ok, and start up disk is correct. I cant really say when the problem started as it worked fine before, maybe on 10.7.1? Not sure.
    Any suggestions for a fix?

I re-installed the 10.7.2 combo. It booted up with a non powered usb 4 port hub but it disabled it. Plugging it out then in again and it works. Looks like the USB firmware has changed somehow in 10.7.2, The hub works on PC's at work no problem, and it worked on the MBP without issue previously. Its not just the non powered hub its a powered hub, and other devices.
    Any solutions?

  • Output sound distortion when USB Mic Connected

    Hi everyone,
Really appreciate anyone’s help on this sound distortion problem.
I have been using the new 2014 iMac 27' for last 8 Months, bought Brand New, and recently updated to Yosemite. Everything worked fine including recording, until this update.
I'm using Blue Yeti USB Mic for recording, and few days after the update I was trying to record in GarageBand and the output sound (via headphone connected to USB MIc) started to distort and then suddenly dropped the bitrate/ sound and I could only hear some clicks. I reinstalled the GargeBand, still its the same distortion happens. The sound gets back to normal, only for few seconds, after I unplug the USB cable from the Mic device. And I tried changing the bit rate and again sounds starts to drop after few sec. This happens only when I connect the Blue Yeti USB Mic and sound output from the Mic itself. Same thing happens with iTunes as well. Output sound from Internal mic and speakers are working fine as normal.
I tried connecting the USB Mic to my Windows laptop and its working fine with the Cubase 5 without any problem. So the problem is with the output sound, when external Mic connected.
I don’t know the solution for this. Have checked on every single blog/ thread, sill couldn’t find the answer I’m looking for, to fix this.
It would be great if you have any kind of a solution for the same.

Nope. The larger buffer didn't work. What did work was running a cord out of the 1/4-inch jack from the direct box to a 1/4-to-1/8-inch adapter and then into the mic/line-in jack on my computer. I set GarageBand to use the built-in line-in and had no static problems. It's a stopgap until this gets fixed.
A post by LinuxMercedes on Oct. 3 at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8158914 may provide a solution.

  • Stand-by / sleep mode not working when USB is connected

    Hello!
When the USB cable from my 24" LED Cinema Display is connected to my new Mac Pro 2,66 GHz Quad-Core, the stand-by / sleep mode does not work correctly: the Mac Pro goes to sleep normally, then the LED behind the on-/off-button flashes one time and then the Mac Pro awakes from sleep mode without any user interaction.
I already tried to reset PRAM, I tested all three rear-side USB connectors (I did not test the front-side USB connectors because the display's cable is way too short), I unplugged all other USB and Firewire devices and also tried sleep mode from a freshly created account. Alas, nothing helps.
As soon as the display's USB connector is plugged in, sleep mode does not work any more. It even doesn't matter if there are USB devices plugged into the display. Without connecting the display's USB plug, sleep mode works fine.
    So, any ideas out there?
Thanks in advance & best regards!
    Mario.

I fixed the problem, so I just post this to help others that might run into the same trouble.
The Mac Pro and the display were connected to a master/slave power socket. The problem is: when the Mac Pro goes to sleep, there still seems to be some power left in the display (which socket is switched off by the master/slave power socket). Therefore, the display goes off slightly after the Mac Pro. This powering off seems to release a signal on the display's USB wire that is connected to the Mac Pro and therefore switches the Mac Pro on again.
So, this is the same effect as removing a USB device from the Mac during sleep mode, what (at least in most cases) also starts up the Mac again.
As a result, there seems to be no other solution to this problem than removing the display from the master/slave power socket. Sadly enough, the LED Cinema Display consumes other 2 watts in stand-by mode...
    Cheers!
    Mario.
