OSX Systemupdate and Firewall
i need exactly information what kind of ports and servers the system update need for this.
because we must install by a customer a "fortinet" firewall where the most is closed.
to open it for the osx system updates we need this information urgently.
i hope this is not to "secure" to could help me :o)
best greetings
powerbook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)
The Software Update pane of System Preferences connects to swscan.apple.com and swquery.apple.com on port 80; port 443 is likely used as well.

Hi looking for a bit of free anti - virus and firewall for osx 10.8.2
hi looking for a bit of free anti - virus and firewall for osx 10.8.2 any pointers also any one used Mac cleaner ?
1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets (see below.)
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been another layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't actually been tested by Apple (unless it comes from the Mac App Store), but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe.
Gatekeeper has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could find some other way to evade Apple's controls.
For more information about Gatekeeper, see this Apple Support article.
4. Beyond XProtect and Gatekeeper, there’s no benefit, in most cases, from any other automated protection against malware. The first and best line of defense is always your own intelligence. All known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore reduces to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source. How do you know whether a source is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn users who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
5. Java on the network (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related) is a weak point in the security of any operating system. If a Java web plugin is not installed, don't install one unless you really need it. If it is installed, you should disable it (not JavaScript) in your web browsers. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those obsolete versions has known security flaws that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. The flaws will never be fixed. Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java can never be fully trusted, even if no vulnerabilities are publicly known at the moment.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
6. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
7. ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so can corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
ClamXav is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. If you don't need to do that, avoid it. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
8. The greatest danger posed by anti-virus software, in my opinion, is its effect on human behavior. When people install such software, which does little or nothing to protect them from emerging threats, they get a false sense of security from it, and then they may do things that make them more vulnerable. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use. -
IChat LAN-LAN bonjour connection via OSX-Server and Draytek routers ?
We want to configure a LAN-LAN iChat intranet connection via our OSX-Server and several Draytek 2600 routers. We have static IP-addresses in all local LANs, do LAN-connection via DynDNS and opened the iChat NAT-Ports on every router as described in several posts.
LAN-LAN connection (e.g. volume mounting and ARD (Apple Remote Desktop)) works fine. We started iChat on every Mac and chatting via .mac accounts also works, but not via Bonjour. The logged-in users are not listed in the iChat bonjour contact list.
What do we have to configure more ? Starting the iChat service on the OSX-Server ?
Thanks in advance for help

PowerPC G5 DP 1.8MHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1GB RAM 22 DisplayBonjour works without a server but will only work within the same subnet. It's likely your routers are on different subnets and so using Bonjour you would only be able to see contacts on the same subnet.
If you're not seeing anybody else at all, even those on the same subnet as you, then perhaps your firewall hasn't been opened to the iChat Bonjour ports (TCP, 5297 and 5298). There's also an entry for it in each Mac's Firewall config pane.
You best bet may be to run an XMPP server. iChat server is an XMPP/Jabber server (using a copy of the pretty old Jabberd 1.4 code), but you might want to consider running the superior OpenFire (http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp) on your server instead.
Just create all the users on the server and then enter the relevant details into each copy of iChat. -
Safari won't open. The recent changes I made are, I downloaded OSX Lion and an iphoto update. Not sure if this has anything to do with it? Here is the error report I am getting:

Website issue with osx server and hosting
so i had a website hosted from my osx server and i had bought the domain name from godaddy it worked great but i desided to instead of hosting it on my osx server to just host it on godaddy so i turned to server off and added the domain to my godaddy account hosting and now it works but one problem all computers can veiw the website but mine. i think it has somthing to do with the fact that my mac was the one hosting it. but if i go to my browser and go to my wesite i get a error but than i go to any other computer and it works great help please
A couple ideas
check our /etc/hosts file, you might have an entry for your domain.
sudo pico /etc/hosts
do you see any entries for your domain? If so:
edit the file by navigating with the arrow keys, delete the line
with your domain. Hit ctrl-x when done (enter 'y' to save the change)
Clear your DNS cache
dscacheutil -flushcache
Try a different DNS server, go into your network settings (In System Preferences)
Go to Ethernet or Wifi (whichever you are using), click Advanced and under the DNS tab enter:
8.8.8.8
Make sure no entries are ABOVE it.
If none of this works, send the results of these commands:
cat /etc/hosts
cat /etc/resolv.conf
dig +short mydomain.com (replace with your domain)
The results of these should point us in the right direction.

i got a macbook pro 13 inch core i5 late 2011 , it came with osx lion and i been using facebook videocalls normaly , now i updated to Mountain lion
but when i use facebook video calls in (safari ,chrome ) i see the window box but i only see my self i can hear my friends but cant see em, they also can see me and hear me but i just see me and hear them .
any ideas ?Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

Hello, Im new to this website. Im having issues with my Macbook. I have the old 2009 model Macbook and it is our schools macbook. The school just upgraded these MacBooks to OSX Mavericks and when i try to open Minecraft it won't let me. It says no jdk installed. I also try to install Java SE runtime but half way through the Software Update it says cant download software because of network problem but I'm connected to the internet and i can browse stuff just fine. Can any one help with my problems. P.S. I don't know the administrator password or stuff like that. And yes we are allowed to play games and stuff on these laptops but only at home not at school so don't tell me i need to focus on school and not games.
Since you updated the operating system, it is probably Minecraft is missing certain files that ware remove or are not longer comparable with the new version of the OSX. what I recommend, is to check is there is an update for Minecraft and install that. If there is not update available, probably the best thing will be reinstalling Minecraft. Hope this will help you.

Can't do factory restore & only disks that keep ejecting are the osx install and apps disks
First of all let me say, this is my first Apple computer and I'm not experienced in forums. Please do not read rudeness into what is actually frustration at searching forever for a solution and trying not to wish I had been talked into an Apple. With that said....
I've had my iMac for about a year and a half. We had lost our internet and were using a hotspot for awhile so we could look for another provider and get online if we needed to. One day I signed on and, we didn't have an isp mind you, but the browser opened up to the dominant isp in this area saying a virus was detected coming from this iMac address? I thought that was strange and panicked so decided to do what I would on a pc, just restore the whole thing to factory settings. Everything was going smooth, (my updates were at 10.6.8 at the time)... when I restored I was back at 10.6.2. (osx disk) I was doing systems updates and one apparently hung.... when told to restart, I did... but the computer would never boot back up. It would turn on.... go to gray screen... then blue screen... then shut off. I couldn't boot in safe mode, pram reset did nothing, smc reset did nothing, couldn't hold 'd' to get to diagnostics, couldn't boot to recovery... it kept spitting out disks after trying to read them... with all those solutions I found online and nothing helping I had to call Apple... they couldn't help over the phone because Apple Care expired, unless I purchased help... this frustrated me because every where I found my problem and a different solution their Apple Care had expired too.... so had to set an appt at an Apple store.
So took it in to Apple, just got it back yesterday. I let them know I was restoring to factory settings so wasn't worried about losing anything. When I picked it up, I was told no charge... it was a software issue they saw where it hung and fixed it. I tried to ask questions about the 'software repair' but they didn't seem to want to answer my questions. It just says 'software repair' on my order. So I asked 'okay, so it's back to factory settings like when I bought it?' I was told yes and I said great that was my goal anyway. I get home and it's NOT like when I first purchased it or like a factory restore. Everything I was doing before it crashed is on there. So I'm back to trying to do a factory restore. But for some reason now, it seems the only disks that keep self ejecting are the osx install and application disks. I still can't do a boot recovery, AHT, or 'c' boot... since the apple disks eject I can't use start up to get to them.
I find it odd that both the oxc install disk and applications disk would be damaged at the same time when they both previously worked. I called the Apple Store where I took it to talk to the geniuses that worked on it because I had a question about the repair they did....
Apple: I'm sorry we don't offer tech support
Me: I understand but I had a question about the repair done from there the other day
Apple: We are just a store and can't answer tech questions
Me: I understand and get that but since I took my mac to your store to be worked on I thought I could ask the person that worked on it a question about the 'software repair' and meaning and what software was repaired
Apple: No you will have to set another apt to bring your computer in if you are still having problems
Me: UGHHHHHH (pulling hair out)
So (a little late huh?) to make a long story short giving what I stated above:
Why is it, only the osx install and application disks not working now? They worked before taking it to Apple
What can I do at this point?
Can you do a factory restore without disks on a Mac?
If by chance both disk did for some reason go out, how do I get them replaced?
If I gave TMI without enough important info let me know.
My OS X install disk says version 10.6.2 on it
About this Mac currently says Mac OS X version 10.6.8
Batteries died on keyboard and mouse so am using usb wired keyboard and mouse
At some point I had used bootcamp and then later found parallels so I could install a Corel product and keep using... could some windows files be messing something up in there somewhere?
It used to say Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and I could have sworn I saw it said 'snow leopard' in there somewhere, now I can't even find that word in search on the computer. Long post I know but trying to set what was going on at the time I took it in.
I'm not sure what else needs to be added to get this to the correct thread or help. As I stated my goal is to have it like I just pulled it out of the box for the first time so no solution will scare me off about loss of data.
Thanks for any help.Wow, sorry to hear of your experience. Seems strange that your disk would just eject like they did. It could be a lot of things but more than likely you just kind of have to start all over.
What I would do is insert your system disk and instead of going immediately to an install I would go to disk utility and erase the drive. That will erase everything on the disk and give you a new blank disk to start with. After that I would try to reinstall the system. Assuming that goes well then you should be restored to where it was when you purchased it. After that you can reinstall all your applications or personal files. I hope you have good backups.
I remember one time I was having a similar problem and don't ask my why I did it but I actually could not get it to install a system. I removed both of my ram sticks, shut the computer down for about 10 minutes including unplugging it from the wall plug, then reinstalled the ram, plugged it back in and started up from the system disk and all worked just fine. To this day I have no idea if pulling the ram helped but I have never had to do it since and for some dumb reason that solved the problem I was having, which is the same problem you are having now. Call it voodoo but it worked.
Good Luck!!

Format External Drive Partitioned OSX extended and FAT32
I am new to the concept of partitioning a drive and have found information mentioning that disk utility has a MS-DOS option for partitioning a drive. I do not have this as a drop down choice in my Disk Utility options. I have read that this is format equivalent to FAT32. I would like to partition this drive half OSX extended and half FAT32. How do I get the drop down choice and is this possible.
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)Thank you Limnos for all your help. Last night I tried again and it worked! I’ not totally sure on what I did right but:
• Both volumes on the new ext. driver were HFS (from my last attempt the other day) so I looked into a simple erase of one partition/volume into a different format, but DU did not offer a way of erasing it into MS-DOS(FAT32). But I think I did a simple HFS erase anyway of the volume I wanted to format to FAT32. There was nothing “in” that volume because this was a new external drive but I figured it could not hurt anything.
• So then, I think I went back to Partition, locked the partition/volume that I wanted to keep in HFS+ for my Mac files, and (re)partitioned the other just erased volume to MS-DOS. I think I did it under the MBR option.
• It worked! Not sure why but my Mac recognized both volumes one as HFS, the other as FAT32. Maybe someone will find this useful some day!!
• Then, I hooked up the drive to my work Dell, the Dell found only the FAT32 drive (as expected), and I executed a short simple easy command I found on ehow.com (search for ‘convert FAT32 to NTFS’) to make that volume NTFS.
Thanks again Limnos and everyone else! -
Can't update iOS 8 on my iPhone5 through iTunes on Windows 8 (error 3004, 3194). Updated host file, opened port 80, 443; turned off security system and firewall, etc. But nothing works. How to solve this problem?
Hi the_mad_movies,
It seems like this article will be the best option for addressing this issue:
Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

Setting up gateway and firewall in OS X Server 10.3?
Hi all,
I have a G4 tower with two working ethernet cards in it that I would like to configure as a gateway and firewall. It has OS X Server 10.3 on it. I have easily found the firewall configuration in the Server Admin intrerface, but I can find nothing about configuring the server to act as a gateway. The only information I have found that is pertinent is related to the Gateway Setup Assistant that comes with OS X Server 10.4, which doesn't exaclty help me. Does anyone have any documentation on configuring OS X Server 10.3 to be a gateway? Thanks.Actually, I may have marked this as answered too quickly...
So I followed the guide at the back of the getting started manual, and set everything up as follows:
- PCI ethernet card is set up as the connection to the outside world. It is plugged into a switch which connects to a wall jack. In Network under System Preferences, it is set up as the first internet conection to try. It has a static IP address, and is set up to use the organization's DNS servers. It is NOT plugged into the upstream port, but is instead in port #9. The light on the router is on.
- Built-in wireless is set up to be the internal connection. It is plugged into the upstream slot on anouther switch. It has a static IP address, and is set up to use the organization's DNS servers. The light on the router is on, so it appears there is a connection.
- A different computer is plugged into the second switch, which a static IP address and to use the organization's DNS servers.
So basically, unlike in the scenario in the manual, I am not using the OS X Server for DNS, DHCP or NAT services. That should, if anything, simplify it.
The firewall service is started, and is set to allow all traffic in and out, no problems. Nice and simple to start.
The server has an okay connection to the outside world via the PCI ethernet card. I can ping other machines and load web pages. I cannot, however, access the machine connected to the router which is connected to the built-in ethernet. Likewise, that machine has no access to either the OS X Server or the outsideworld.
How does OS X Server decide which ethernet card is to be connected to the outside world, and which is for the internal firewall? Is the confusion possible because I'm connected to two routers? -
Thrree different times I attempted to download the new OS to my wife's iPad. each time it would proceed to a point somewhere around 80 minutes remaining (started with 3+ hours remaining and downloaded about 4mb per minute). I have a 1mbDSL line that routinely tests out at around .85mb per min. I have tried all the "fixes" I found on the site including isolating allother USB interfaced hardware, rebooting both machines (PC and iPad), shutting off AV and firewall and still it fails at about the same point - giving error 3259.
An attempt to find other info or any way to comminicate directly with Apple re this was not successful.
Any ideas?
My next idea is to take the entire PC to my son's where there is a faster internet connection but that is a lot of trouble and you shouldn;t have to do that. with other large file updates I have done on other software, if it fails or times out you are able to resume where it left off and eventually get it done.An alternative is to try downloading the update via a browser : https://discussions.apple.com/message/16703914#16703914
You could also do that via, for example, a friend's computer and then copy it to your own computer for the actual update.
