"other" mysteries

so i recently got my ipad mini i love it but im having "other" issues ...see what i did there.... but really all i have on my ipad is music netflix zombie farm and cox cable tv ...so i was messing around trying to get pictures for all the bands so its not just a blank picture with almost every song but since then my other data went from like .14mb to 819mb i finished adding album art but is that whats taking up the room in other i mean i dont mind it i just hate how it says other if anything they should make it so it says album art or even make an "other info" so you can see whats using the space and stuff like that on your ipad (or other apple device for that matter)  if any1 can verify that album art comes up as other let me know thanks in advance

.viminfo
No idea what this is. Is it related to VIM Editor? It seems to be part of Mac OS install - and causes problems if it's not working properly. Can I replace the current old one with one from the clean OS install - if so - how do I copy / replace hidden files from one drive to another?
You are correct, that file goes with the VIM editor, which is just a more feature-rich workalike to the old Unix standard Vi. The .viminfo file is used by VIM to store state, for example your command line history, search string history, search patterns, etc, between invocations of the editor. This file doesn't even need to be there for VIM to work (it will be created if missing). So, you can either replace that file, or just outright remove it, without issue.

  • Unable to connect and other mysteries

I am running 10.5.6 on MacbookPro - I am having the following problems
    * Safari - "Safari could not open the page “http://livepage.apple.com/” because the server is not responding." - Firefox is working fine
    * Mail - Connection status - "Mail was able to connect to internet" BUT for every mail account I get "could not connect to server message".
    * iChat - works fine
    What is going on?

I think I'm experiencing the same issue.
My MacBook Pro has been running smoothly for the last year. I don't think any mail settings have been changed or altered in the past six months. This morning I retrieved email from seven mailboxes associated with the same account. But, this afternoon, every time I selected "check mail" another mailbox would fall offline and request I enter the password info.
Despite running disk utility (verify disk permissions & repair disk permissions) and re-entering the password account info in the mail preferences, the problem is still persisting.
    Definitely, bizarre behavior.

  • Howling sound and other mysteries

I've never really had any problems with my powerbook since i bought it. but today, somehow a youtube url that was saved on my desktop opened without any help from me. i wasn't even at the computer.
then about an hour later, a weird howling/whirring sound started. the computer froze and went to the blue screen with the spinning icon you get when it is booting up. i shut it down a few times and it now seems to be working okay for now. The sounds seems to be coming from right below the left speaker. Could this be a sign my harddrive is about to go? or a fan or something?
    thanks

actually i did mean left when i said right (still trying to get my directions down). so it could be the fan maybe? it seemed to only act up when i did something strenuous to the computer. it seems to be working okay now, (knock on wood). thanks

  • Really blank cells...

I have a strange problem in my excel data. I don't know if I can upload a sample workbook, in the meantime I try to describe the problem.
In my database I have a column (formatted as text) with many blank cells. The problem is that, for unknown reasons, some of these "blank" cells are not really blank. At the moment, there are 1004 records total (this is not important, it's just
to use actual figures): if I filter with the regular excel filter (the one on top of the column), selecting all values EXCEPT blanks, I get 374 records selected. If I use the function COUNTA, I get 395 records; if I use the function COUNTBLANK I get 630 records.
Since 395+630 is 1025 and the records are only 1004, this makes little sense to me: some records are counted twice, once with the blanks and once with the non-blanks.
I noticed the problem because the pivot table based on the database and  counting the non-blank records related to that column was giving the wrong results as well (I KNOW that 374 records is correct). Comparing the results of the filtering and of the
pivot, I was able to isolate the "wrong" records: canceling the cell contents in the column in these records, the pivot table and the functions give the correct results. In those cells there seems to be something, but I don't know what that is:
    1) if I apply the function CODE to one of those cells, I get #VALUE?;
    2) If I apply the function LEN, I get 0 (zero)
I assume that this means that there is absolutely nothing there.: so what are COUNTA and the pivot table counting?
I apologize if I am not being clear: this problem is driving me crazy, because the pivot table are the basis of all statistics I need on the database. Thanks in advance for any suggestion
    Robert, Italy

OK, in the meantime I discovered something else. Let me try to explain. The user of my amateur VBA code can select to add a new entry or to modify an existing entry, via user forms. In the second case, the user form if filled with the contents of the selected
record fields, the user changes what is needed and the contents of the user form fields are written back to the database. Now, suppose that the field in the database corresponding to the column I mentioned in my post is empty. It is (correctly) NOT counted
by the pivot table. Now the user changes something else in the form (NOT that field, that remains blank): when the data are written back to the database and the pivot is refreshed, voilà: wrong number, one item more counted. Canceling the field in the database,
the pivot count is back to normal.
What I did was to apply your suggestion to the database field (range of 1 cell only) right after having written it back to the database:
    .Cells(rowno, 24) = Me.TextBox4
    .Cells(rowno, 24) = Application.Clean(.Cells(rowno, 24))
Unfortunately, it does not work. The pivot table gives the wrong result. BUT the only way I found to "solve" the problem is to clear the cell with clearcontents, equivalent of Cancel in VBA:
    .Cells(rowno, 24) = Me.TextBox4
    If Len(.Cells(rowno, 24)) = 0 Then .Cells(rowno, 24).ClearContents
This works, but it does not make any sense to me: What am I clearing if there is nothing there? Or what is there is a kind of ghost, of zero length but that is detected by pivot and COUNTA?
    Add two other mysteries:
    1) the field is counted by COUNTBLANK AND COUNTA: so is it blank or not?
    2) if the user adds a new entry and leaves that field blank, nothing strange happens.
For the moment, i'll stick with this correction, but not understanding what is going on makes me unconfortable. Thank you for your attention.

  • How to edit/delete album cover art

A number of my iTunes album covers downloaded from 'Get album artwork' are the wrong ones - either wrong artist or wrong album. But I can't find a way to edit/delete them and replace them with the correct album-art that I have sourced myself. IWhen I try to drag in a new cover over the top of the existing one it simply reverts, after a few seconds, to the existing cover. I am not a computer whiz so I have no understanding of attacking this problem from the back end - eg .itc files and other mysteries. Surely there must be a more user-friendly solution. Any practical advice would be much appreciated.

IF YOU click on the song in particular, the artwork pane will be available and you can delete, add and edit from there. I had a similar problem and it was down to the album being originally part of a compilation - ie I had changed all the songs to one album, which then confused the artwork. Tyr clearing the album name, and reinput

  • What determines when logs get rotated?

I need to write a script to parse /private/var/log/secure.log and create a report consisting of the time and userid of each login. But secure.log gets archived periodically, and then the archives get deleted, so I need to time the execution of this script to whatever it is that triggers this archiving so I can record the logins before the log gets rotated.
Looking at the logs and archives, it's a little hard to tell what's going on.
    % ls -l /private/var/log/secure.*
    -rw-r----- 1 root admin 8153 Jul 24 21:37 /private/var/log/secure.log
    -rw-r----- 1 root admin 2232 Jul 21 23:16 /private/var/log/secure.log.0.gz
    -rw-r----- 1 root admin 2196 Jul 7 08:21 /private/var/log/secure.log.1.gz
    -rw------- 1 root admin 6275 Jun 29 22:29 /private/var/log/secure.log.2.gz
The time intervals are not the same, and neither are the file sizes, so the logs don't appear to get rotated on a regular schedule or when they reach a certain size. It does seem to happen between logins, I think.
/private/etc/periodic/daily/100.clean-logs looks like it deletes old logs, but it isn't involved in archiving or deleting archived logs. /private/etc/periodic/daily/500.daily has a routine for archiving logs, but I don't understand it well enough to see what triggers it.

I've written the script for doing user accounting on the Panther machines, but I'm still having trouble understanding what's going on on my own machine. I'm not positive, but I think there might be some serious problems with launchd and how it manages logs. Something is definitely not right.
According to the documentation Mark referred me to,
Beginning in Mac OS X v10.4, the preferred way to add a timed job is to use a launchd(8) timed job. A launchd timed job is similar to a cron(8) job, with two key differences:
    * Each launchd job is described by a separate file. This means that you can add launchd timed jobs by simply adding or removing a file.
    * If the computer is asleep at the designated time, a launchd job executes as soon as the computer wakes. This is similar to the behavior of anacron and other cron replacements).
From what I'm seeing, this simply isn't happening. Look at the listing I posted above:
    % ls -l /private/var/log/secure.*
    -rw-r----- 1 root admin 8153 Jul 24 21:37 /private/var/log/secure.log
    -rw-r----- 1 root admin 2232 Jul 21 23:16 /private/var/log/secure.log.0.gz
    -rw-r----- 1 root admin 2196 Jul 7 08:21 /private/var/log/secure.log.1.gz
    -rw------- 1 root admin 6275 Jun 29 22:29 /private/var/log/secure.log.2.gz
This log is rotated by the script /private/etc/periodic/weekly/500.weekly, but it clearly isn't being rotated weekly. The dates the three archives were created fall on a Friday and two Saturdays, and there is a two week gap between 0 and 1. I am positive that my laptop was not asleep for a week or more. I use it every day. I noticed that the permissions on secure.log.2.gz are wrong, but I don't think that's the cause of the problem. It's just another sign of the hinkiness that abounds here.
The situation looks even stranger when you look at the dates of the first and last entries in each file:
    secure.log.2: Jun 19 22:34:51 - Jun 29 22:29:19
    secure.log.1: Jun 30 20:15:36 - Jul 7 08:20:33
    secure.log.0: Jul 7 11:33:01 - Jul 21 23:16:07
    secure.log: Jul 22 15:35:03 - Jul 27 22:43:46 (and counting)
So it looks secure.log.0 and secure.log.2 were truncated and archived around midnight--different days of the week, but at least they avoided getting entries from the same date in two different files. But look at secure.log.1. 8:21 in the morning??? Why???? It's not like it was asleep or anything. I had been using it until around 12:30, and started in again at around 6:30 Saturday morning. Why does it decide it's time to rotate the log at 8:21? And this is after it has already waited two weeks!
So if you're doing user accounting on a weekly basis, this just isn't helpful, and it sure isn't helpful if you're trying to do it monthly. You basically need to re-concatenate the files and split them out by grepping the dates. In other words, before you can do what you need to do, you have to undo what the periodic maintenance routines have done.
And you have to hope they haven't destroyed the records you need.
Among all the other mysteries I'm trying to sort out, I'm trying to understand why the /private/etc/periodic/monthly/500.monthly script didn't run at the end of June. One thing I can't do is go back and look at the system.log, because they rotate them daily (or they intend to, but this doesn't work correctly either) and only keep the last seven. Here's what the log rotation script looks like:
    for i in system.log; do
    if \[ -f "${i}" \]; then
    printf %s " ${i}"
    if \[ -x /usr/bin/gzip \]; then gzext=".gz"; else gzext=""; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.6${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.6${gzext}" "${i}.7${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.5${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.5${gzext}" "${i}.6${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.4${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.4${gzext}" "${i}.5${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.3${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.3${gzext}" "${i}.4${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.2${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.2${gzext}" "${i}.3${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.1${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.1${gzext}" "${i}.2${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}.0${gzext}" \]; then mv -f "${i}.0${gzext}" "${i}.1${gzext}"; fi
    if \[ -f "${i}" \]; then
    touch "${i}.$$" && chmod 640 "${i}.$$" && chown root:admin "${i}.$$"
    mv -f "${i}" "${i}.0" && mv "${i}.$$" "${i}" && if \[ -x /usr/bin/gzip \]; then
    gzip -9 "${i}.0"; fi
    fi
    fi
    done
That last part is just plain weird. They get done rotating all the gzipped archives, and then they need to test to see if there is a new log file, and if not, create one, then archive it. Archive an empty log??? What for? Don't you want to see if there's a current log, and that it has at least one line of data in it, before you start the whole process? Why bother rotating logs if there's no new information? And then, after they archive it, they don't create a new log? All of the other log rotation scripts archive the current log then create a new one. Why should this one be different? This just looks like a mistake.
Also, I'm not the most experienced shell scripter, but isn't this just plain crude and ugly? Instead of using a loop to do a repetetive task, with a variable you can change to set a limit on the number of iterations, they've hard-coded each step. And this is in the script that we're not supposed to change, and it can't be overridden. Nice.
So if we want to change how frequently our log files get trashed, we need to write a daily.local script that takes the truncated, archived files and decompresses them, concatenates them, and puts them somewhere out of harms way? Is that how we're supposed to proceed? Follow them around and undo what they do then try to do it right? Heaping more ugliness upon ugliness?
And keep in mind that the timing mechanism that controls it all is broken, and if you want to do your monthly reports at the end of the month, or your weekly reports at the end of the week, you either have to wait around until this byzantine Rube Goldberg machine spits out the logs you need or go to the terminal and call periodic to run whatever process you want it to run manually after all.
I am starting to wish I'd never looked at this.

  • Is is possible to batch change photos to original date?

I'm amazed at how mixed up my photo lib is (I'd really like it to be chronological) due to edits and other mysteries. Is there a way to batch change a bunch of photos (I have 11,000 - how many should be in a "batch"?) to revert back to original date taken??? Thanks for any help! Donna

Do Not use Shootshifter on photos already in the iPhoto Library. This will rename the files and that will damage your Library. Every file renamed will be lost to iPhoto.
    Instead, try an experiment:
Export a few of the files from iPhoto and use Graphic Coverter (you can download a Free Trial) to examine them. See what it tells you is the date of the photo. This will tell us if the problem is with the pic or iPhoto.

  • Error uploading to Vimeo

I just got Premiere Elements 11 yesterday and am trying to upload a video to Vimeo (Vimeo HD).  I get an error "encountered an online services error."  I tried this 3-4 times and each time I get the same error after it goes upto 99%.
I was browsing for answers and came across several others who have had the same issue, and the advice was to "Referesh Services" under Edit > Preferences > Web Sharing.  Did that and still get the same error.

This is a forum of volunteer users that like to help others by "braninstorming".  Demanding service or demanding that features work will get little results.
The only updates to version 11 so far concern Adobe Camera Raw support.  It has to do with still photos taken in RAW formats.  It has nothing to do with Vimeo.
So that I would know it works, I just created a 30 second video and uploaded it to my Vimeo account.  So, I know that on my computer with my relatively slow connection that the software works "as sold".
That leads me to believe there is a different sort of issue.  It may be disk space, it may be an intermitnet internet connection or one of the other mysteries in computers.
If the volunteer brainstorming here is not to your likeing, the product is new and you have properly registered it, you should contact the paid staff at Adobe support.   Try clicking "Online Support" on the Help menu.  A page loads where there is a link to Customer Support below Online Experts on the right.  That might be a good place to demand the product work as sold.

  • ICloud is switched on but won't open on the internet and other annoying iCloud mysteries.

Using iCloud between iPhone iPad and iMac. For some reason all my notes are not on all three devices. Spent hours the other day trying to fix that to no avail. Now using the iPad. iCloud is on in the settings menu but when I go to the internet it gives me the front page of iCloud that had only three choices. Download iCloud or find my phone or find my friends. What is going on? Why won't it open to my iCloud page?

You can't access iCloud.com from a mobile device.
First check that all your settings are correct, that notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the notes you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone'  or other non iCloud account (you can do this by checking in accounts on an iOS device, or the left side panel in mail on a computer), non iCloud notes will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your notes are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking notes syncing (mail and notes on a computer) in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling notes syncing.

  • Mysteries of PlatformMBeanServers and other MBeanServers

OK, have added a second application running in it's own JVM. It doesn't matter whether I register the beans direct to the PlatformServer or Federate a local server to the PlatformServer, the results are the same. Cannot see both beans with one connection.
Is there one PlatformServer to a machine or one per JVM?
Is it possible to see multiple beans each in it's own JVM at one time? I had the impression that this was possible? Have not seen any examples. Thought the dmk example was all in the same JVM for simplicity of writing the demo, but maybe that's the only way to do it?
Course, once I figure out how to get beans from multiple JVMs on the same machine to show up, then I need to figure out how to consolidate them into a central server on another machine with others from still more machines. Is this all a dream?

The remote MBeanServers (= sub agents) must have a JMXServiceURL at which they can be contacted. The master agent must know theses URLs, and will be able to federate the sub agents in a single MBeanServer.

  • The Firefox icon often disappears from the toolbar when I go to another window like Outlook or Media Player. When I close down all other windows it reappears again. What can I do about that?

When it has disappeared I can open Firefox again using the menu or the opening icon on the toolbar, but then it only shows up blank, so without the tabs that were opened before. Closing down all other icons on the toolbar is the only way to make the Firefox icon reappear and for me to open Firefox again with all my tabs.
Please excuse my English, the jargon is difficult.

    Thanks for your reply, cor-el.
The odd thing is, this problem hasn't occurred again since I posted it. What kind of magic is that? :-))
It really is odd, since I had it at least twice a week for several months.
    So far, so good, then.
I'll wait a while more, and will then close it as being solved. I guess that's the procedure.
We'll put it down to temporary bugs or pc mysteries.
Though I like the magic option more...

  • Small Mysteries

I created a poster in Pages, and for one Text Box used Gloucester MT Extra Condensed font. After exporting as a PDF, I imported from that PDF into Aperture 2.1.3. Two mysteries developed:
    1) the text in this font displays in Aperture with color blue, but when printed from Aperture is black as it was in Pages and the PDF;
    2) although it appeared the metadata, when viewed in Aperture, was correct as to the time this image was created, when uploaded to a SmugMug gallery that is sorted by date & time, it appeared as first image despite having a later date than any other image in the gallery.
The second issue was worked around by opening the PDF in Photoshop CS3 and manually converting it to a TIFF image (after flattening), and then importing that into Aperture (btw, Aperture always correctly sorted the image by date in its displays). However, the color for that particular text remains blue as displayed in Aperture, but prints as black. It also displays correctly as black when viewed in the SmugMug gallery, or with Photoshop or Preview.
Sorting is by date taken because images from three different cameras are involved, and their dates & times were synced in advance.
    Ernie

I am in Safe Mode now: This is the weirdest thing: A bit from column A AND B:
The display is perfect EXCEPT for two parallel lines of 17, 3 millimeter-long black lines that follow the pointer everywhere it goes.
Get this: my current display is 1024x768, but when I change it to 640x480, the pointer and everything is perfect! (of course, I can only see a fraction of my desktop)
But then again... when I zoom in and out holding down control (in 640x480) the pointer lines appear again, but less lines. They disappear when I re-reset it to 640.
    Strange.
But yeah, safe mode is NEAR perfect with the except of the cursor lines. I can screen grab my cursor though to show...

  • 16-bit vs 8-bit Mysteries

I think I've read almost every 8bit vs. 16bit debate over the past 6 years, including those by Fraser and Margulis. I still remained bit confused, so I tried to develop some tests of my own. I didn't get very far because I stumbled over some mysteries. I'm hoping some gurus with more experience can shed some light.
Details follow, but in summary, why does the Photoshop Info Pallet show "odd" 16bit values on 8bit images? Why does Photoshop generate different 16bit values from the same 8bit values?
Here are my initial testing steps:
    Set Up:
Fire up Photoshop. I'm using CS5 64bit in Windows 7 64bit, but I expect these tests would be the same under any version. Select the Eyedropper Tool and change the sample size to "point sample". Go to the Info Pallet, set one of the readout values to RGB (if not already there by default.) Then set the value to 16 bit by clicking on the eyedropper next to the RGB values.
    MYSTERY 1:
1A. Generate a new blank document, 500x500 pixels, 8bit mode. sRGB colorspace.
2A. Bring up the Color Picker window and set all RGB values to 149. There is nothing special about 149. You can use any value. I picked it because it matches the "50% gray" value in the Swatches pallet that I use in other tests.
3A. Fill the image with this value. Several ways to fill, I use the Paint Bucket.
4A. Use the "point sample" Eyedropper tool to read the 16bit RGB values in the Info Pallet. See 16bit values of 19147 for the 8bit value 149.
That's the mystery. Why is the 16bit value an odd amount? In 16 bits there are 128 steps between each 8 bit value. You would think that 8 bit values would be in integrals of 128. So an 8 bit value of 149 should be 148 X 128 = 19072, not 19147.
    MYSTERY 2:
2A. Generate a new document, 500x500 pixels, 16 bit mode.
2B. Go to Swatches pallet, click on the "50%" gray swatch, top right row.
2C. Bring up Color Picker window, see that RGB values are all 149.
2D. Use Paint Bucket tool and fill the image.
2E. Wave the mouse around the image and see that the 16bit RGB values are all 19131.
2F. Bring up the Color Picker window and simply retype any one of the RGB values with the same value. Apparently this causes Photoshop to reset the values.
2G. Re-fill the image with the "reset" values.
2H. Sample around the image and see that the 16bit RGB values are now all 19147.
2I. Repeat often, filling the image with RGB 149 values first set by the Swatches pallet, then set with the Color Picker. Notice that the 16bit readout in the Info pallet switches back and forth between 19131 and 19147.
So, why does Photoshop generate different 16bit values from the same 8bit values, depending on where you get the 8bit values (Color Picker vs. Swatches)? Note: different colorspaces generate different values from the Swatches pallet, as expected, but the mystery of getting different 16bit results from identical looking 8bit values still happens, regardless of colorspace.
    MYSTERY 3:
3A. Generate a new doc in 16bit mode.
3B. Go to Swatches pallet, click on the 50% gray swatch.
3C. Use the Paint Bucket tool and fill the image.
4D. Sample the image with the Eyedropper, verify all values are 19131.
    5E. Use Image/Mode and convert to 8bit.
6F. Wave the mouse around the image and see that the 16bit values have changed. Most are 19147, but a few are 19018. Magnify the image to the max to see and sample individual pixels. There is no apparent pattern to the 19018 value pixels. They appear to be random.
So, why does Photoshop NOT apply the same math to every pixel during a 16bit to 8bit conversion?
The only explanation I can think of for these mysteries is that maybe the Info Pallet is giving bogus numbers for 16bit values. Perhaps the math performed on the actual pixels is different from the math used to calculate and display the values in the Info Pallet. In which case, what we see is not what we get?

Photoshop 16 bit integer data is really 15 bits plus a tiny bit more.
    black = 0
    white = 32768 = 0x8000
Yes, that seems strange, but it's the way it is.
Plus I recall seeing (in the Plug-in SDK) some conversion math that led me to believe it was optimized for speed rather than numeric accuracy.  I'll try to find that again.
Hopefully this might help explain some of what you're seeing.

P.S., there was a thread a while back in the Camera Raw forum in which it was shown that color management operations were introducing dithering in 8 bit data.  It's possible the operations you're using are invoking the same quirk from the Adobe color management engine.

iPhone 4 shows 11.77GB taken up by "other" what is it and how can i delete it?

One of the great mysteries of the Universe.
However, I can tell you that if you power cycle the phone, Other will diminish significantly in size. So it probably contains caches, app workspaces, whathaveyou. Just had close to 4GB, but after force quitting all apps and then turning it off and on, Other went down to a tad over 1GB.
