Our iPod touch 4th generation 8GB will only update to iOS 4.2.1. Are further updates impossible?

It's just been updated and restored using iTunes. That went well, but iTunes now says the iPod software is up to date with 4.2.1, although we wanted to get a more advanced iOS so the iPod touch would be able to run the SiriusXM app.

A 4G can go as hig as iOS 6.1.3. You update via iTunes
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
You need iTunes 10.7 or later on your computer.
You do have a 4G iPod, right? The 4G has cameras. Otherwise you have a 2G and those can only go to 4.2.1

This problem happened to me a month ago. The way I used to fix it:
1. Go it DFU Mode. For going into that, check this page.
2. Connect your iPod to your PC which has iTunes and iTunes will detect your iPod in recovery mode.
3. Press Shift + Restore if you have the .ipsw firmware file downloaded on your windows PC or just click Restore and follow the instructions to download the firmware file.
4. Wait and finally you're done!

I've had this problem from about two weeks and I forgot about it, but today I wanted to play on it and remembered that it's not working, I've tried connecting it to iTunes via my laptop but I'm not to sure how to update it because I thought that might fix it, but no luck. - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hi guys. I just wanted to ask whether the 8gb ipod touch 4th generation is actually a 4th generation ipod. because i know that the 3rd generation 8gb isn't actually a 3g itouch but a 2g one. I wondered if the same 'catch' applied to the 4th gen 8gb? also does the 8gb 4th gen lack certain capabilities compared to the 32gb and 64gb 4th gen versions? (basically anything apart from less space).

Your 4th gen is fine. The confusion only exist between the 2nd and 3rd generation units.

How to fix an ipod touch 4th generation that will not turn on or charge

My ipod touch 4th generation randomly turned off and will not turn back on or charge. I have tried restarting it, resetting it, and letting it "charge" for weeks but nothing has worked. It is not registered by itunes when plugged into the computer either and there hasn't been anything dramatically done to it. I also cannot do anything to update its software since it isn't being recognized by itunes or turning on.

New iPod Touch (4th generation) - Music will not sync

I just bought an 4th generation iPod Touch. When syncing my from my Windows PC to the iPod everything syncs perfectly - photos, contacts, bookmarks - but not my music files. The music sync box is checked. The playlists are hightligthed, but no luck. Any ideas why I am having this problem?

The songs were either purchased through the iTunes or imported from old CDs. This is a replacement iPod as my old Clasic died. All the songs I wanted downloaded fine to the Classic. In addtion, I have an iPad and an iPhone 5 and the songs synced to them just fine.

No, Apple does not take back used devices, you'll have to sell it by yourself and buy a new ipod after you have sold your old one.
