Outline Stroke in Illustrator CS3 Broken?

It seems that Outline Stroke in Illustrator CS3 is broken in more ways than one. The bug I'm struggling with at the moment is that Outline Stroke seems to ignore the strokes alignment. For example, if I have the stroke of an object set to "outside" or "inside" (instead of center), outline stroke creates the outline of the stroke as if it were "center" aligned. I've checked that in CS4 this bug has been fixed, but I don't have access to CS4 at work. Does anyone know of a work around or patch that resolves this, or is an upgrade to CS4 the only option?
On a side note, Illustrator CS3 has to be the buggiest adobe application I've ever dealt with. It has so many little annoying bugs, most of which are fixed in CS4. I shouldn't have to pay for an upgrade to CS4 just to get bugs fixed though, that seems wrong.

You must not have used version 10.
As for the outline issue... try Object > Flatten Transparency

Stroke issues Illustrator CS3

Hello,
When i give outlined text in illustrator CS3 a stroke of 0,1pt it seems like
the stroke is put on in an angle (like its done with a brush)
Expanding the stroke makes the problem even clearer.
This problem seems to become less when i boost the stroke to 0,15pt.
Opening the same document in CS2 gives no problems at all.. the stroke works as it should do.
Any ideas on this?

Outline stroke with Illustrator scripting

Hello everybody!
I'm making a script. I need to do the outline stroke action. I can't find it in the extendscript anywhere.
I can do it from a applescript and call it from my extendscript in CS6 BUT I need my script to run CS5.5 and run on a windows machine:

Anyone out there with an answer? It would help me alot. As I understand it you can call functions withing extensionscript if you have the right "action code" for it. Using the ActionDescriptor.

I have looked around and I cant find any documentation with a complete reference with the action codes. Do any one of you out there the action code for "Outline stroke"?

Gradient with stroke problem Illustrator CS3

We make a gradient object in Illustrator CS3 and give it a stroke which is centered. Then we rotate the object and the gradient rotates with the object.
But then when we put the stroke alignment to inside or outside the gradient fails. It shows the gradient in the original 0-position instead of the angle we have created. When we put the stroke alignment back to center the gradient shows as we meant it to show again.
When stroke alignment is on outside or inside before we rotate the object it shows the same problem.
But when I copy an object from CS2 with an angled gradient and a inside or outside aligned stroke. The problem isn't there. When we start copying the object within CS3 the problem shows again (not when I use alt-key to copy, but with ctrl+c and then ctrl+v, ctrl+f or ctrl+b).
Illustrator CS2 didn't have this problem. But now in CS3 we have it. I used to have this same problem in old versions from Macromedia Flash. But I never had it with Illustrator.
Is this a bug or do we need to handle our gradients in a different way when using Illustrator CS3?

It's a memory issue. If you scale your artwork down (say, to 50%), then save, it should work (it can be scaled up in the page layout software). If you're using raster effects you'll have to make sure they scale as well and that your raster effects resolution is appropriate for the final output size.

CS3 Outline Stroke not working?

I am using Illustrator CS3 on my mac, and when I use the outline stroke command, no matter what brush i've used for the stroke, it makes right angles. so if i use a round brush and make a line, so it looks like a skinny rounded rectangle - when i do the outline stroke command, i get a rectangle. i know this worked properly for me in cs2, but i'm not sure if it has worked right for me in cs3. any thoughts on what might be wrong? thanks!!

You shouldn't be using Outline Stroke on a live Brush path. Use Expand Appearance. (Often good to follow with the Merge Pathfinder.)
If you just want to outline a uniform-weight path with rounded caps and joins, you don't need the Brush. Just give the path a thick stroke, set its caps and joins to round and *then* use Outline Stroke. (Bugs in CS3 notwithstanding.)

CS3 Outline Stroke Parallel Lines Bug

Hello everyone...
I'll try to explain my issue as best as possible. I am using Illy CS3 on Win XP Pro.
I am creating installation instructions for an electronic product and need to show wire routing.
I created an art brush of two parallel black lines two different ways (two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them) and am getting the same result when I apply the Object>Path>Outline Stroke command.
What is happening is instead of Outlining each of the strokes and individual paths, Illustrator is outlining the space between the two strokes as one filled, closed path.
Perhaps this is expected behavior. However, Illustrator CS4 (which I use at home on a Mac) outlines the stroke as I would expect it to with the two lines as individual paths.
Does anyone know of a workaround or any way for Illustrator CS3 to behave in a similar way to how CS4 handles the strokes?

I can't follow your description, and can't replicate the problem trying to follow it.

Explain "two black lines and two black lines with a white line between them".
Brush 1 built from:
Two parallel open paths, each with a black stroke?
Brush 2 built from:
Three parallel open paths, equally distributed, the two outermost ones having a black stroke, the middle one having a white stroke?
When you say "situated between them" are you talking about stacking order (paths with different weight strokes stacked in same location) or spacing (three parallel paths distributed vertically)?
You say you've created these two ArtBrushes and are then applying Object>Path>Outline Stroke. Are you in fact talking about outlining the strokes to the artwork
before converting it to an ArtBrush, or applying Outline Stroke to a path to which you already applied the ArtBrush?
Describe EXACTLY, step-by-step, command-by-command, the simplest steps necessary to replicate the problem. Don't use ambiguous terms like "line". Use the terms of the program.

Illustrator CS3; creating an outline around a shadow only

I am working with illustrator CS3 and and trying to figure out how to go about creating a outline for a drop shadow only. I know how to create the drop shadow and apply it to the selected work but when I want to add another stroke it wants to add it to the letters and to the outline and it adds small lines in between connecting the two. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How to open an Arabic PDF in Illustrator CS3 ME without outlining the font?

Hi,
I need to use Illustrator CS3 ME (Middle East) in order to edit some pages of an Arabic PDF file.
Now, the problem is that as soon as I open the page in Illustrator, all of the Arabic text gets outlined. The English text doesn't get outlined.
I need to edit the text, so this is a big problem.
I don't have the original source files (InDesign).
Also, it is too much editing to be doing in Acrobat.
Is there some sort of solution for this?

The font is Arial, which fully supports Arabic, as far as I know.
How do I enable glyph protection in the prefs?

ignorance, but I usually work with InDesign, and quite rarely with
Ilustrator. This is a special case for me...
The formatting is very ordinary. Nothing special.
I really hope there is some solution for this....

You can just select the live Type with the (normal) Selection Tool, then click Add New Stroke in the Appearance palette flyout. After that you can select it with the (relevant) Type Tool and edit as you like.

CS3 Outline Stroke Problems

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. But since upgrading to CS3, I've got a serious problem moving the points from a stroke I changed to an object with the Outline Stroke command. I use this quite often, since I like the control it gives me over the look of a line.
But with CS3, when I move some point at the end of the line, it turns out that there are sometimes even 3 overlapping points. This is very annoying. I could lasso select, but then, of course, I need to be in outline view or else I select the underlying object. The Clean Up command does not help. This is really not workable. It used to work so smoothly, and now there's overlapping points all over the objects.
I've been looking to see if there is any documentation about this. But I cannot find anything. Have there been any changes in how the outline is created? Are there points added when you move one? Are there new settings / options I have not found yet that can reset the behavior to CS2-and-before style?

Are you referring to paths in general, or paths created by Outline Stroke?
If the former, I haven't noticed that happening at all. I see exactly the opposite. Due to the larger hit radius and the preference given to anchor point hits over direction point hits, as well as the highlighting of anchor points within the hit radius, it is
easier in CS3 to be sure of moving the anchor point instead of accidentally hitting the adjacent bezier edge or a direction handle that happens to be very short. (Of course if the mouse is outside the hit radius of any anchor point but within the hit radius of a bezier curve or direction control point, it will adjust direction handles instead, but that has always happened, and the anchor point hit radius is bigger now.)
But maybe you're making different kinds of paths than I do. I do not know what you mean by a "hard corner point" vs just a corner point. Do you noticed anything that distinguishes the anchor points that move as expected from the cases where the direction handle moves instead?

When I click on the link to download Illustrator on the page you sent, I get the following error message:

Any tips why that might be?
I tried multiple browsers, multiple computers, multiple apps in the CS3 collection… they all give the same error. Tried a VPN from a different country. Nothing. Turned off all extensions in my browser: Nada.

Illustrator CS3 - Bug? Export to JPG has white line on outline of image

When using the export (under file) in Illustrator CS3 to save the image to a .jpg file I save it as a RGB (was created initially as CMYK) using quality of medium, method = baseline (standard), depth = screen and anti-alias checked. I tried a number of variations from these standards. THis is what was used on the image you can see at http://www.punchitupnow.com. You will see that a white border (even though made sure to use yellow border color) is present, especially on the bottom of the image (look closely as the image include yellow, which blends with the page color). I you use the file > save for web option you get a preview that shows the white border on the bottom of the image. Any ideas why this is showing? Is it a bug?

Jacob is saying you should use a crop area.
You should also consider setting the Matte (in Save for Web) to match the background-color of your page.
Also, you really should work in RGB from the get-go to design anything for the web at all... There are lots of colors in CMYK that don't exist in the RGB gamut and vice-versa.
I'd suggest using a smaller image or just some text on your page while it's under construction, or maybe a combination. The way it's set up now, it's kind of annoying to have to wait and look at that horrid yellow while waiting for an image to load only to find it won't do anything for you.

Illustrator CS3 outline path problem

I've been having problems with outlining the paths in CS3. Every time I outline a path, it creates multiple points where there should only be one point. In versions CS1 and CS2, I've never encounter this problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Before updating to CS3 or CS4, you should know all the bugs and problems present with these new versions. Like the problem you going to have installing CS3 or CS4.
One of senior Adobe Engineering staff (John Nack) has the courtesy to create a forum so people with concerns about Adobes installers (specially with versions CS3 and CS4) can read and ask questions limited to his department. However, he is trying to have the developers to create forums so people like us can ask the hard questions about all the bugs on CS3 and CS4.

Illustrator CS3 Font Menu Broken after update

Hello All, I'm using Illustrator CS3 on a dual 2.3 GHz powermac G5 running Leopard 10.5.2, and using 20" Apple cinema display. Recently installed the Leopard graphics update, and suddenly my Illustrator font menu is all messed up. It seems like a video glitch. When Scrolling down through the list of all my fonts the bottom 1/3rd of the menu starts to break up, and part of the menu disappears showing the desktop, or palettes beneath the menu. as shown bottom right of image.

White Lines on Live Traced Artwork in PDF from Illustrator CS3

Hi, I've recently been using the Live Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 on my artwork so that my artwork becomes a vector image instead of a raster (I'm told it's better for Web because it works better with varying resolutions - doesn't become pixelated). For my live trace, I use a custom preset: ADJUSTMENTS- Mode: Color Threshold: 128 (grayed out) Palette: Automatic Max Colors: 256 Output to Swatches: OFF Blur: 0 px Resample: 600 px Fills: ON <grayed out> Strokes: OFF (grayed out) TRACE SETTINGS- Max Stroke Weight: 10 px (grayed out) Min Stroke Length: 20 px (grayed out) Path Fitting: 1 px Minimum Area: 1 px Corner Angle: 1 Ignore White: OFF VIEW- Raster: No Image Vector Tracing Result The preview info, located under the dialogue bubble with the i states: Paths: 4894 Anchors: (no number) Colors: 148 Areas: 4822 Image PPI: 200 I don't know if that helps anyone, but that's just the preset I've used to get a sharper, almost fully preserved vector version of my raster image. When I want to convert it to a PDF file using the File > Save As... > Save as type: PDF with the following preset: Adobe PDF Preset: Illustrator Default Standard: None Compatibility: Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7) Then, my image as viewed in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional has several white lines, outlining areas of color. The issue is perfectly preserved, as you can see the white lines outlining areas of color. This problem is persistent despite the zoom level in Acrobat 8. Just another little bit of information, the problem is most noticeable in the red area and not the cream/white and yellow areas. When I was working on the original raster image in Photoshop CS3, the cream/white area was done with the Ellipse Tool, using Bevel and Emboss in the Blending Options. The same goes for the yellow area, which was done with the Line Tool. The red area was done manually, with the Brush Tool, Smudge, Blur, Burn, etc. I'm telling you guys just about everything I've done leading up to this issue. But, if there's something you need to know more, I'll try to figure out what I could've possibly done wrong to get this result.

I too get this result when using LiveTrace. My simple solution to this problem was to just place a solid color shape behind that section of the trace where it occurs that is the same color as the trace. Simple...but it worked.
