P67A-G45 3T drive only formatting to 746Gig

P67A-G45 3T drive only formatting to 746Gig
Converted partition to GPT, still 746Gig.  Saw other posts for firmware update to UEFI, but could not find that in my downloads for this motherboard.  About a year ago I updated my BIOS, and Live 6 Utility says that my system is up to date.  What am I missing?  Thanks for your help.

Thanks, yes I read that.  It was one of the few concise posts on the issue.  Once you got to the Intel site to get the driver.  Intel tells you"
"IMPORTANT:
Before installing this application or requesting technical support from Intel, first contact your system manufacturer. They typically provide software which is specifically configured for your system. "
MSI has been updating other drivers even those that are from Intel.  Why is MSI not seeming to endorse the use of this driver?
Thanks for your help?

• Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.

That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

• What to do with bricked motherboard? MSI P67A-G45 AFTER FLASHING LAST BIOS

I flashed MSI P67A-G45 by the last BIOS for IB CPU. The flashing goes twice with intermediate reset. Before I flashed P67A-C43 by the same version from MSI, and all was Ok.
I flashed new BIOS from version 1I under DOS mode. There was a problem with pen drive and I used hard disk without USB pen drive. That was my error. The exe file started and flashed BIOS  normally and then after reset started flashing Intel ME firmware. I thought all is going ok and the image is taken from HDD. But after the process finished and motherboard reset, it didn't start at all. The fan starts and stops, LED blinks and motherboard behaves the same way even without CPU. What can I do? Is there any way, suppose, using a EEPROM writer? I have one and I can take the BIOS chip off and flash by old version of BIOS. What can You advise? Maybe the second flash process writes another chip - can You tell me about it. Please advise how to manage this problem.
I received no help from support. I'm not a novice - I work in repair center and have soldering station etc. Can You explain me anything about second flashing process? I need only information and I will be able to manage th :lol_anim:is problem.

Running Windows 7 64 bit Professional
Problem: Within days of building computer in January the computer started to automatically reboot seconds after shutdown or entering sleep mode.
Attempted Fixes:
-Total re-install of Windows + BIOS
-Updated BIOS via LiveUpdate
-Rolled back to initial BIOS that came with MB
-Changed between registry option of "PowerdownAfterShutdown" between "0" and "1"
-Disabled Wake-Up Events in BIOS
-Changed to OS controlled Wake-Up events
-Changed "Restore after AC Power Loss" to off in BIOS
-Ordered a new PSU, replaced PSU
Regardless the fix, if I try to shutdown - the computer reboots within a few seconds.  If I try to put it in sleep mode, it boots right back up.  The only way to get the computer to shut off is by manually turning off the PSU.
I've seen that there have been frequent power-cycle issues with this particular motherboard in comments on newegg.com, just wondering if this issue has been encountered and if there is a fix available?

Is this with no case wire connections to any of the headers? i.e. if you start it by shorting the on/off pin headers with a screwdriver tip.
Yeah, as shown here.
http://www.computer-how-to-guide.com/motherboard-troubleshooting/motherboard-post-test-how-to/
Shorted on with flathead, boots up fine.  After flipping off the PSU to turn it off and then flipping the PSU back on, the dang thing waits a few seconds and boots right back up.  No short required.  At this point I think a ghost might be living in my computer.

• Unable to update P67A-G45

Hello all,
I have been running my P67A-G45 (B3) based system for over a year now with no issues. Every few months I check MSI's site for BIOS updates and have been flashing via the HP Flashdrive utility.   Ive used this method several times with no errors.
Im currently running BIOS 1.12 dated 7-22-2011 and I want to update to version 1.I
When I run the flash (booting into DOS via flash drive) I get the following error:
"ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID"
Is there something im doing wrong? or is the MSI website linking to the wrong BIOS?

This is weird. If you mentioned that you update your BIOS every few months, your last BIOS version should be version 1.H dated 13-01-2012.
For the board, P67A-G45 (B3), there was never an official BIOS of 1.12 dated 7-22-2011, the only two BIOS versions that were available between April to October were version 1.B dated 14-04-2011, and version 1.D dated 04-10-2011.
Check this link for all P67-G45 (B3) BIOS and release dates > http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P67A-G45--B3-.html#/?div=BIOS
I suggest you double check your board details again.

• P67A-G45, LEDs lit when PC off?

When your PC is off but plugged in, are there any LEDs on the motherboard on?
If so, where are these located?
I followed the suggestions in this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=154311.0 for trouble shooting, but I have had no reaction from my motherboard.
The system that I'm trying to bring to life:
intel i5-K2500 CPU
MSI P67A-G45 (B3) motherboard
Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 2x4GB memory
Cooler Master Hyper 212 cooler
Gigabyte Radeon 6870 1GB video
WD Caviar SE 120 GB 7200 rpm hard drive
Samsung SH-222AB DVD reader/writer
Cooler Master HAF912 case
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Antec BP550 Plus 550W ATX12V power supply 22A@12V and 25A@12V

No, the only LED's on your motherboard are the CPU Phase LED's and they should not come on without any power being provided to the board. The LED's are located at the top of your motherboard. This info is provided in your MSI motherboard manual.
I take it you are still unsure whether it's your power supply or your mobo that is defective? How about sharing what steps you have taken in the process of elimination so we may help you troubleshoot your problem. Did you follow any of the advice that was given to you and what were your findings?

• MSI P67A-G45 (B3) - Problems with USB3 & Updates & card reader, etc.

Hi, I have the MSI P67A-G45 (B3) motherboard and I'm still having problems with it (as from day one).
1) I still seem to have some problems with stability with the USB.  I updated the drivers for the Renesas USB to the latest (2.1.39.0) from the station-drivers website,
I was thinking of grabbing the firmware update as well.  But I wasn't sure if I should.  The page also shows firmware updates for uPD720200 & uPD720200a, and I'm not sure which one is in my motherboard.  Should I update?  If so, which one is in my MB, uPD720200 or uPD720200a?
2) I'm also having trouble updating the Intel ME Driver and the Intel INF Update (although I'm googled that the INF update doesn't really matter).
3) I can't seem to get the firewire port working with my WD Home 2TB external HDD (it works through USB though).
4) I have an old internal flash card (SDHC/MS/MMC/etc.) reader from another desktop that I wanted to add to my MSI one.  Is it possible to do so?  Where would I plug it in?
5) Is there anything else I need to update: software or firmware?  I've generally updated the stuff listed in the Live Update (except for the stuff I never installed).
Thanks.  Please answer any of the questions if you can.

Thanks, Renesas update seems to have taken.  Let's hope it's more stable.
I have a Core i5-2500k Sandybridge processor.  Is there a point to me updating the BIOS & Management Engine to the latest?  The support page for my MB says don't bother unless I have an Ivybridge processor?

What PC is the card reader from? Some of those card readers such as from Sony & Dell will only work in the respective brand PCs they came from and not any other. I have one I removed from a Sony and it will not work in my rig. If the card reader is a normal 3rd party model purchased from a store it should work but may require drivers from the manufacturer of it. As far as plugging in a card reader they go to an internal USB header on the MB.
The old desktop was from computer maker Cisnet.
I plugged the 5-hole (or rather 4 holes, since one is blank) plug into JUSB1, but it seems to keep connecting and disconnecting in Windows 7 x64. Windows made drives for all 4 card slots, but whenever I put a memory card in, it would just connect and disconnect and the memory card would never show up.  Is it a driver problem?
It's a Foxconn internal card reader, except I can't seem to figure out which model it is despite googling (not indicated anywhere on the card reader).
Don't really want to cough up $15-$20 for a new card reader, so I'm hoping to get this one to work.  Thanks.

• P67A-G45 (B3): 5 beeps, what do they mean?

So I'm a first time builder, and I recently assembled a desktop with the following parts:
Intel i5 2500K 3.3GHz CPU
MSI P67A-G45 (B3) ATX Intel Motherboard
Team Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1333
EVGA GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 01G-P3-1370-TR Video Card
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
XFX Core Edition PRO550W (P1-550S-XXB9) 550W Power Supply
I got it up and running and it worked great up until I decided to do a performance test with City of Heroes. My PC handled the game beautifully for about an hour before it abruptly shut down. To my horror, pressing the power button only caused the fans and LEDs to lurch and flicker for a split second before immediately shutting down. I started removing components and attempted a boot with just the motherboard, CPU and one RAM stick connected. This time it actually powered on for more than half second, so I shut it down to repeat the process while reconnecting components one at a time.
It seems that the video card is dead; when I connect it and attempt to boot I get the same flicker/lurch as when it failed the other night. When I attempt to boot without the video card my PC successfully powers on and initiates a POST, yielding the standard 2 rapid beeps followed by one of a higher pitch, after which it sounds an ominous 5 beeps. You can hear it in this video (not mine, but sound is almost the same)
Now, my question is: what do these beeps mean? Consulting the manual and google turned up no useful information, but the circumstances seem to suggest that they mean my video card is bad/missing. I'm hoping this is the case as I want to make sure the video card is the only thing I need to replace. Any help would be appreciated.

• EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES AND FORMATTING

I am using 10.6.4 / Intel Macbook Pro
I have to format a drive so it can be used on both PC and Mac. In the default, store bought hard drives come formatted NTFS (I believe) - I can mount the drive but not copy to it as I only have read permission.
I am well familiar with the MSDOS fat 32 format and it is worthless.
I have to use large 1tb external drives batch copying tens of thousands of multiple files. I am constantly getting errors because of characters or the names are too long even though NTFS supports it. So even though I can mount an NTFS disk and copy the files onto a FAT32 drive, that drive still rejects a lot of the files.
So my questions are:
Do you know of a format (other than fat32) that supports both Mac and PC and can handle longer naming conventions and "&-" ampersand characters?
Or - How can I adjust permissions to write to an NTFS disk without erasing all the info on the disk?
Or - is there an app so I can read/write/mount to PC disks without futzing with permissions?
If I format standard Mac HFS will PCs be able to read write? Does journal formatting affect PCs read or write? Anyone? Thanks

Windows cannot read Mac formatted drives without third-party software like MediaFour's MacDrive. Macs can read NTFS and MSDOS but cannot write NTFS. You can modify OS X to both read and write to an NTFS formatted drive. You need two pieces of freeware:
MacFUSE-2.0.3
ntfs-3g-2010.10.2-macosx
Look for them at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. You will also find one or two alternatives by searching for "ntfs."

• I really need to speed up my IMAC.  I purchased a new external drive specifically formatted for apple.  I also would like to move some other media (movies and music) to this external drive.  What is the best method for this?

Please help...I need to delete iphoto pictures and back up to external drive without losing pictures. I have the external drive and would like to start this process.  Can you help?

Formatted for Mac is not a format - for iPhoto you MUST verify that it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
and putting your iPhoto library on an external drive is NOT a backup - you MUST have a good backup plan like Time Machine running or you are 100% guaranteed to lose your photos sooner or later
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
other media questions need to be ask in the forum for the software you use for them - this forum is only for iPhoto and the above instructions are only for iPhoto

Excerpt from manual;
Important
DDR3 memory modules are not interchangeable with DDR2, and the DDR3 standard
is not backwards compatible. You should always install DDR3 memory modules in
the DDR3 DIMM slots.
In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules of the same type
and density in different channel DIMM slots.
To ensure a successful system boot-up, always insert the memory modules into the
DIMM1 first.

does this mobo even support 1600mhz ram without overclock? i choosed it because i was told it could  i mean, if i put 1600mhz rams, will it be that speed directly or must i change some settings first? if so, which settings?
The thought process is not quite correct. The mainboard specifications say it will support up to 2133 OC right? It is the CPU IMC that only natively supports DDR3 1333 speed. Anything over 1333 is overclocking pure & simple. If the RAM is 'properly' programmed, it should default & work without having to change any settings.

• Buying a 2,5" external FW400 drive only for Photoshop CS2 as Scratchdisc?

i am a retouching professional
and use a pb 15" and a ACD20".
do you think it makes sense to buy a
2,5" external FW400 drive only for Photoshop as Scratchdisc?
2,5" therefore, as it needs no powersupply
by wire. that elegant i guess,
my images have 1,5GB on the disc, and use often 4GB RAM in Photoshop CS2 but i only have 2GB RAM in my pb 15" 1,67 from late 2005.
its very slow sometimes as Photoshop (PS) scratches onto my external drives which are all nearly full of stuff and heavyly fragmented.
so , i had that idea of buying a drive only for PS, which is always "empty" and PS can use it for scratching large data onto the disc. i would format it everyday in order to prevent fragmenting (?) and be able to work fast,
thats my goal, just to work faster. its really slow sometimes as i suffer from too less RAM. of course i am buying a G5 quad later with plenty of RAM but for now i have to work with my pb .... and need a better working solution
anyone thinks it makes sense?
if yes, how big should the disc be, 20GB , 40Gb, or more?
if the file in PS has 4 GB RAM, and has 30 layers or more, how can i find out how many GB space it needs on the scratch disc?
i would like to buy this one:

Cutie EX

if 40GB would be enough i could save more money, but if you say i need 80, its also ok. which model/brand of disc would you put in? i am looking for a quiet one, 7200rpm and at least 40 or better 80GB. but quiet would be important.

thanks for your help.
i had another idea now: i copied my stuff from my internal pb to my external FW 400 disc. now i have 40GB free space in my internal.
- is this enough for photoshop scratch disc?
- should i also define the other 3 discs (external) as Photoshop scratch disc (possible in the prefercenes of Photoshop, up to 4 discs can be used as scratch discs)
- what about the system scratch disc, do both interfere themselves or bother?
- better also copy the image i work with in Photoshop to the internal powerbook drive which has only 5400 rpm or better leave it where it is now on the external FW400 drive 7200rpm?
thanks

Time Machine can back up to a server. The drive or partition used still needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
