P7N Platinum Q6600 @ 3.5GHz, you to can do it

Just thought I would share my results of getting over the dreaded 3.0GHz wall.  I'm still in the testing phase (running 4 prime95 at maximum heat consumption right now), it seems to be running quite strong.  I can probably hit 3.6GHz or more, but that will be later.
Vcore: 1.47v total, +.2v settings
VTT: 1.5
NB: 1.5
SB: 1.5
v1.2 bios
I'm going to be scaling back all the volts to find out where the weak spot is for overclocking.  I don't exactly like running the VTT and NB at 1.5v, but many people have been running their Asus 750i boards at 1.50v and doing ok.  Max temps so far are 56c on cores 1 and 2, 54c on cores 3 and 4, running 4 instances prime95.

Bumped them both down another notch.  I think that is 1.42 and 1.40.  So two notches from the top.  I'm going to be moving the cpu volts down tonight.
It looks like I almost have the same system as you:
P7N Platinum SLI v1.2 Bios - Q6600 G0
Zalman 9700 LED Cooler
Corsair XMS2 DHX PC2-6400 2 x 2GB 4-4-4-18
8800GT SLI
Enermax 500w PSU
Antec 1200 Case
WD 250GB/ Windows XP Professional SP3 x86
WD 750GB
I just recently got the 1200 case, man I love it.  I don't think I can ever go back to a normal mid-tower.
The case keeps everything really cool.  I'm running all case fans at low and the Zalman 9700 at 1650RPM.
My voltages are
vCore 1.496
FSB (one setting over stock)
NB 1.28
SB 1.50
Everything that can be turned off in the BIOS is off.  RAM is unlinked and running at 800MHz (for now)
I'm going to go for 3.5GHz, just enjoying playing Crysis more than I enjoy run Prime95.
Regards,
Doug
BTW:  I'd appreciate it if you gave me your RAM settings, and voltages.

  • P7N Platinum/Q6600 Overclocking suggestions needed.

Hello all, first of all let me say I'm brand new to the board and the information posted has been really helpful. My issue though is that I feel uncomfortable with the overclocking process. I left everything at default but changed the FSB to 1333 to get 3.0. That's fine and dandy but I want to make sure everything is running at maximum. Here is a list of my parts:
    RAIDMAX SMILODON Case
    RAIDMAX 730W PS
    MSI P7N SLI Platinum
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
    ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro
    G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
    EVGA GeForce GTX 280 1GB
So here's the question, what should my "Cell Menu" settings be for an overclock of 3.0, what should my ram settings be? Also, is 3.0 considered conservative? Should I shoot for more?
    Any information is greatly appreciated!

Hi all. Just thought I'd drop a note on here to say I've been using these posts to help me OC my own q6600 and p7n sli combination and it's been very helpful. Compared to the p35 board I had before it's horrid to overclock but after much trial and error I'm getting there thanks to your help
One problem I still have is with my RAM which is rated to run at 1066 but currently sits at 800 after my overclock to 3ghz. I just tried upping the ram clock to 1066 and it appeared as if the machine would post correctly but then hung before loading windows...
Any ideas as to how I can fix this? My ram voltage is at 2.2 and timings set to 5-5-5-15. I'm using Corsair Dominator 8500
Northbridge voltage currently at 1.4 in preparation for my next increase in FSB.
edit: I'm now running at 3.6 after copying the bios settings from the post above. Still want to get the ram going faster though.

Hi xeper. That setting is fine just left alone if your running stock. If your OC'ing & all is confirmed stable, then leave it alone as well.

  • MSI P7N Platinum and 8800GT of 8800GTS in SLI with everest is FREEZE

    Hello,
I want to warn users of the msi p7n platinum with the 750i chipset who use everest 4.50.1372 and a 8800GT or 8800GTS 512 mb (with a G92 CPU) in SLI that they can get freez problems.
I got a extra 8800GT card and go SLI but the computer got random freezes after that.
    My system:
    Windows xp sp2 with an Q6600 2GB pc-6400 ram, 4 hd's (2 ide, 2 sata), dvd-writer and a dvd-rom. Latest 1.2 bios.
It was very frustrated and also mailing msi support in The Netherlands didn't help (they thought it was a problem with the powersupply). The computer just got frozen with the last picture on screen and didn't respond at all (not a single error msg). Sometimes in minutes and other times in hours. Only option after that was a hard reset.
To make a very long story short (i tried every beta bios out there with every bios setting) . I sold one of the 8800GT's and bought a SLI set with 8800GTS 512mb in the hope the problem was with the different brands of cards (EVGA and TWINTECH with the 8800GT's). But the problem was even worse with the 8800GTS 512mb G92 (from Point of View). So i take a look at the software and found out that the problem was with the everest monitor software that displays all kinds of info on my G15 keyboard. After i disabled everest i had not a single lockup anymore.
Also the latest beta of everest that i downloaded yesterday gave the same problems!
Everest was in fact the last program i disabled cause i used that to see what the temperatures of the CPU and GPU where at the moment the computer didn't respond
Mabye more ppl have this problem and are using everest and i hope that they find this thread Dunno if the problem is also with other brands and chipsets (like the 780i or 790i)

luckyjan, thank you for your feedback on this.  Interesting find.

I suggest that you clear CMOS and use flash it to the BIOS v1.1 under the MSI website for your board and see how it goes.
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
LOL thats funny !!!!!  1.1 is what came installed on the mobo and is not compatable with the Q9550 it will never boot to bios using 1.1 with a quad core ! Thats the first problem i had thats why i explained all the steps i had to go through to get this mobo / cpu to boot with the help from MSI tech support !

  • P7n platinum no post after cpu change

Just built a new rig, got it up to post screen and freezes.bios is version 1.1. I have read all other posts about this particular problem for p7n platinum and tried all the recommended solutions, none avail.
Tried to flash to bios 1.2 with floppy but floppy didn't boot.
Changed to e2140 cpu, even worse, no screen whatsoever. fans, lights, etc. are running.
Reverted back to the e8400. no screen as well. Checked for bent pins and power connections, all seems fine. Before changing cpu's, it will show the post screen but freezes there.
Time to send back to the reseller?

If your system will boot up with another PSU, what would that tell you about your current one?  It is either defective or incompatible.  In the first case the problem can be fixed by replacing it and in the second case you'll need a better PSU.  One that does not have known grounding/compatibility issues.
ok. But correct me if i am wrong, the first few times booting with the e8400, it will show the screen, doesn't that tell that the PSU is ok with the MOBO?

  • New Build P7N Platinum wont boot issue

    Hi Guys,
First of all can i give you all the spec of the machine i am having the issue with a s its NOT the same one as in my signature.
P7N Platinum (not sure on bios versions as i cant get to it!)
    OCZ 8500CZ memory (2x2gb)
E8600 cpu with Arctic 7 cooler
tagen BZ series 900 watt PSU
    Problems are as follows:
I have just assembled the system for my wife and when i powered up for the first time i got into the bios no problems. I changed the voltage for the memory as it runs at 2.1 volts and changed the date and also the boot priority settings to DVD drive first, then HDsecond and saved as i wanted to install an OS on reboot.
I rebooted and started to install XP but it froze during the format of the drive section.
When i now try and reboot i am getting nothing at all. The screen stays black but CPU fan spins and goes at normal speed as does the rear case fan. The PSU lights up and the GFX card fan is spinning.
I have tried running just 1 stick of memory but this has not worked or made any difference. All the normal Motherboard lights appear to be on.
Can i also point out that on the first boot ( when i forgot to check what bios version i was running) the E8600 was recognised in the bios with the correct multiplier and speed. This is my first complete build and i was wondering if i have missed anything obvious
I need some help now as i diont know what to do.

    Edit :
Did you try to clear CMOS with pc unplugged?
Be sure to turn off/pull the plug of PSU & hit the case power switch to drain PSU/MB capacitors before you clear CMOS. That should restore factory BIOS settings so you can at least boot to BIOS again and see what revision you have. You can also lookat the sticker on the BIOS chip, last 3 digits indicate version ie 100 would be v1.0,
110 = v1.1. For your CPU you should have v1.2 going by CPU support list.
I'm pretty sure the chip is located here on your MB:

  • P7N **PLATINUM** OC Help

Hi all, trying to OC my P7N Platinum w/ q6600 SLACR and a Tuniq 120.  I can't do much without reverting to stupid high voltages (but the chip stays cool).  Still, is there an updated bios for this board?  I noticed everything is for the Diamond.
Also, no matter what I set the CPU multi too, the bios ALWAYS boots it at 9x.

7 passes, 20 passes, I agree, more is better - However - Every single bad piece of memory I have ever had, ever (and I build computers quite a bit, and recently there's been a lot of bad memory) has failed on the 1st pass.  Does this mean mine is good?  No... However, it more than likely is good.  Windows is running stable now, no problems, been gaming since my last post.  I cannot explain the weirdness I have been having lately.  Maybe it's just Vista 64!  Odds are I would have crashed by now if was something like the memory.
What is the ability of the MSI board to run 4x 2GB DDR2 @ 4-4-4-12, 800Mhz.  Will the stock NB voltage support this or do I need to up it some?  I think the board might be failing on overload, so-to-speak.
I appretiate the active Moderator support on this board, I am really impressed how far MSI tech support has come in the last few years.  Keep up the good work and let's get this q6600 overclockin!

  • P7N PLATINUM SLI dont post at all!!!!!!!!!

i bought a new msi mobo p7n platinum sli, after backing it in the case and connecting everything,it doesnt post, and it freeze on the msi logo..
also the keyboard dont work at all, so i cant enter the bios,if ipress on del it gave me a black screen write in it as follows:
    A7380NMS V1.0  011508....
    system specs are:
    1. MSI P7N PLATINUM SLI
    2. CPU INTEL  E7400 2.8 GHZ
    3. 2x2GB KINGSTON DDR2 RAM
    4. XFX NVIDIA 9500 GT 1GB
    5. GIGABYTE PSU 550W
CAN YOU PLEASE PROVIDE ME WITH THE SOLUTION,ITS A BRAND NEW PC
THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS GREAT FORUM.....

Remove mainboard from case and try running with just absolutely necessary components. Try reseating cpu and check if heatsink has proper contact to cpu's heatspreader. Try running setup with just one mem stick.
Also provide full specs of psu as you can see in my signature.
From the writing you reported (A7380NMS V1.0) it seems your board has bios V1.0 installed while your cpu would at least require V1.2 or higher (http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1373&maincat_no=1#menu).
Possibly you might need to lend an older Core2 cpu to install bios V1.2 or ask the retailer to flash it for you. First step is of course to try eliminating other possible sources for the issue as listed above.

  • P7N Platinum no POST

When I set FSB to 1200 for Q6600, no POST on my mobo P7N Platinum Sli. No joy at FSB1333 too. It POST successfully with E6600, both at FSB1200 and FSB1333.
Another strange thing is no POST when RAM timing set to 1067 2.1V or 2.2V (using Team Dark-1066 3GB module x 4) even at default FSB1067. It was ok when using 1GB module. However, if I volt to 1.95V, it boots but unstable (probably due to insufficient voltage). Changing to 2V or more results in no POST.
    How went wrong?

Reset everything to stock speed without any OC and see if there is any problem. If there is no problem when in stock speed, you should post your query in our Overclocker's section.

  • **!! SOLVED !!** MSI P7N Platinum SLI Stuck on Splash Screen

Okay, so I got a bunch of new hardware for Christmas and finally the rest for my birthday this weekend and I am stumped.  I got all installed and when booting, I get the MSI splash screen with the spaceship and nothing else...just stays there on the splash.  Only one beep like my other MSI boarded PC and no more after that.  I have tried reseating all components including CPU, ram, graphics card and still no luck.  Also have tried with mainboard out of case on the box with all connectors plugged in.  My hardware is as follows:
    MSI P7N Platinum mainboard
    Intel E8400 Wolfdale
    Corsair DDR2 2 x 1gb
    nVidia PCI-E 260 fx card
I have all else unplugged to eliminate as much as possible.  PLEASE help me salvage this because I have to say its been the most disappointing birthday ever this year LOL. Thanks guys!!!!
P.S.  Also tried reseting CMOS many times including overnight unplugged and mainboard battery removed.

OK everyone...problem is fixed.  As u all thought, the S-Spec of my CPU was not supported my the BIOS version (1.1) that the Mainboard P7N comes with...so the way I remedied the situation was to find (and purchase) a cpu that is on the cpu support page for mainboard that is supported by bios version 1.1.  I also must note, do not go by just the model number, go only by S-Spec number.  Once my Intel Celeron D 3.3 came today, started pc with a botable floppy (made by windows on my other machine) and flashed bios the old fashioned way with floppy disk.  After flash to version 1.3, put my CPU back in and what do you know...IT WORKS!!!   So got Windows installed and have been stable for about 6 hours now.  Thanks all who contributed...I love you all!!!  LOL

  • P7n platinum - e8400 overclocking issues, pls post your settings

    Dear OC experts,
I have troubles overclocking e8400 to 3.6 ghz on p7n platinum board. I have tried many variables and options in BIOS, but the problem remains the same. While doing regular tasks on my PC, everything seems to be stable, but when I start a game (battlefield 2 bad company or skyrim) the PC freezes. I have upgraded BIOS to the latest version, I have all the newest drivers, tried many different settings in the OS, but it does not help. The video card is gtx560. There are no problems/freezing when I set all the values in the cell section in bios back to default.
I have searched web alot, my eyes are red... The only remaining hope - you : )
I would greatly appreciate your help. Could you please post your bios settings for the OC'ed e8400 if you have the same board.
    My systems is:

  • P7N platinum sli and qx9650 overclock issues

    Hey all,
Just wondering if someone could help me with overclocking my qx9650 on my P7N platinum sli.
I have tried throwing all kinds of voltages at the cpu, fsb, and nb and I still can't run stable for over a few seconds. I thought it might be due to a fsb hole and have tried a range from 1550-1650. My goal is to get it at 400mhz(1600 in bios) and get a 5:4 ratio with my ram at 1000.  I tried updating to the p06 performance bios from ami 1.3 and still can't get it stable. I don't want to end up frying my board. I got it to run stable at 350 for an hour in prime 95 but would really like to achieve 1600.  at 350x8.5 for 1500 my temps did not get above 54c under full load
I am not looking for a huge oc, just get to 9x400 for a 3.6 ghz clock speed for 24/7 use. I ran prime 95 for 5 hours with everything at stock so I know it is not a bad cpu, ram, mobo. I also ran memtest86+ at stock and every test passed. I have d.o.t disabled, eist disabled, and spread spectrum disabled.
Memory timings right now are 5-5-5-18-2T at 2.1v and memtest+ passed with those settings at speed 800mhz.
    any suggestions would be great

just wanted to let everyone know that i got it stable at 3.75ghz for 26 hours in prime 95. Don't know why but it still won't boot from 1550-1650 (must be a FSB hole or something) so i just put it at 1500(375) with a 10 multiplier and ram at 1000 for a 3:4 fsb:ram ratio.
