Pacman won't work after Shorewall install

Today I got shorewall and dnsmasq installed and operational. However, I can no longer install packages with pacman. I get the error:
:: Retrieving packages from core...
error: failed retrieving file 'gpm-1.20.6-5-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from mirrors.kernel.org : Connection refused
error: failed retrieving file 'links-2.2-4-i686.pkg.tar.xz' from mirrors.kernel.org : Connection refused
warning: failed to retrieve some files from core
error: failed to commit transaction (Connection refused)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
No matter which mirror I use. Any ideas?
And yes, I can ping google.com and other outside addresses.

@nadman10
I've never used shorewall, but it appears to be a firewall.
It is unlikely that the default configuration of shorewall knows anything about pacman, and thus wouldn't allow the pacman protocol though.
You could try adding the following to your /etc/pacman.conf file under [options]:
XferCommand = /usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c %u -O %o
This would (I believe) cause pacman to use ftp to retrieve the data files which shorewall would (most likely) allow.
Of course, if pacman uses a standard protocol (like ftp) then this wouldn't fix your problem.  In that case you would have to look through the shorewall documentation to find out how to allow the pacman mirrors to have access to your machine.

Hi everyone, I just installed archlinux on my very old 400Mhz Dell Latitude, but now pacman won't do anything, I can't sync, I can't install anything, ... The install did have some issues, but I'm not sure if that is causing this

  • Facetime won't work after Lion install... No mic from isight

After installing Lion on my 2010 mac mini, Facetime won't recognize my firewire isight mic. Video comes in from the isight, but it doesn't find it as an audio input choice. System preferences recognizes it and hears your voice, but not Facetime. You can Facetime with someone but they won't hear you. Skype still works fine on Lion using the same isight (audio &video).... tried resetting PRAM but still nothing...  C'mon Apple.. Lion and Facetime need a fix here!!  I've read others are experiencing same issue!!

In Lion, neither the previous version of FaceTime Version 1.1 (258) from OS X 10.7.1 nor the current Version 1.1.1 (262) from OS X 10.7.2 can use external iSight's Firewire mic.
The firewire iSight camera works with Lion's FaceTime, but the iSight's Firewire mic is not available for selection in FaceTime > Video. One alternative is to use another video chat app such as iChat or Skype.  Both iChat and Skype can use external iSight's mic in Lion (and earlier Mac OS versions.)

  • Username and Password won't work after Archive & Install...?

Can someone help me out here. I had to do an Archive and install on my sisters iMac G4 this evening, for Tiger OSX. She was getting continual Kernel Panics and could not boot to her desktop even once. So I did the Archive and Intsall, but after 2.5 hours and using both Disc 1 and Disc 2 for the process (like it had asked for)...and it all finished, a welcome screen pops up after the OS launches prompting me to enter the computer name, and password. We have this information saved, and always have, but the iBook is not accepting them?? Any thoughts or suggestions on what we should do next? The options I have on this screen are (sleep, restart, shutdown, or login...with the name and password fields above) Thanks everyone. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Smartmediaman

I did check those options to preserve the users and network prefs. Just put in the install disc 1 and ran change password, but the only option in the drop down was for the system administrator (root), and I put in a new password, and confirmed it, then...rebooted to desktop and same window popped up prompting me to enter the computer's username and password, and still...nothing worked. Any other ideas folks? Thanks,
    Smartmediaman

  • Fingerprint Software won't work after re-installing

I have uninstalled and re-installed the Fingerprint Reader, version 3.2.0.341 - 4/20/09.  When I try to enroll a fingerprint, I get the message from "Fingerprint Enrollment:  FPApp.exe - Unable To Locate Component" saying "This application has failed to start because css_banner.dll was not found.  Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
I have re-installed, choosing repair, but I still get the error.  However, I see css_banner.dll in \Program Files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution.
How can I fix this problem?
Update:  I uninstalled version 3.2.0.341 and installed version 3.2.0.116.  I have the same problem.
Message Edited by mhedstrom on 05-13-2009 11:38 AM
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I've solved the problem:  I had to repair the Client Security Solution.
I noticed that if I tried to open Client Security Solution, I got a similar error about css_banner.dll being missing, followed by a message that CSSLauncher.exe had encountered an error and would close.  So I decided that since the css_banner.dll is part of Client Security Solution, it made sense to try to reinstall or repair this application.  I downloaded version 8.2 from Drivers and Software and it offered a 'repair' choice.  After doing the repair, my Fingerprint Reader application worked.  I upgraded the Fingerprint Reader back to the new 4/20/09 3.2.0.341 version and that one seems to be working fine.

I just installed Maverick on my MacBook Pro, it is a mid 2009 model.  Ever since when I get on Facebook with Firefox, Chrome, or Safari, I can"t get any of the games to load.  Everything worked just fine last night before the install, but now I am at a loss as what to do to fix this problem, short of wiping the HD and starting back over in Snow Leopard.

  • Spotlight won't work after clean install

I did a clean install of a 10-seat licence of 10.5 server on the primary partition of a Mac Mini. Logged in with the admin account (the only account), I cannot get Spotlight to find anything at all (even searching for something that it should find, like "Safari" just gets me "No Results Found").
I've done software updates, re-booted, and repaired permissions. Any ideas?
(On a side-note, I'm trying to find where the Weblog server stores media files; so if anyone can tell me that I'd appreciate it).

I can't believe it , I've finally got Leopard on my brand new iMac, which was supposed to come with it pre-installed! A friend who has Leapord came over and saw my screen and icons and said, 'that doesn't look like Leopard, you should reinstall.' We did, and now everything works great (including printer, Bluetooth A2DP and Spotlight, which hadn't been working prior). Airport works, too, but it was working before thanks to the WPA fix. Somehow my Intel iMac, purchased in December from the San Francisco/Marina Mac Store, came with a faulty OS installation. I wasted soooo much time trying to fix it when I just needed to reinstall (w/o erasing my HD). Maybe this can help others having similar problems. Happy Mac-ing!

  • My quicken won't work after I installed mac os x.   I downloaded quicken 2007 but need to retrieve my info from my old quicken records.  HELP!

I'm new to apple support.  Didn't realize I had to type more.  I just updated my imac to os x so I could use icloud, etc.  To my surprise, my quicken no longer works.  I downloaded quicken 2007 but can't seem to find a way to retrieve my old info.  Any ideas?

I know you are frustrated from updating and that is understandable.  BUT: we should be able to fix it for you. BTW: this forum is NOT Apple Support: we are just Apple users like you who share our knowledge and help.
What model iMac did you recently update?  Under the Apple Menu, go to About this Mac and tell us what it says; and then click MORE INFO and SYSTEM REPORT and tell us what Model Name and Model Identifier.
Your older Mac is the iMac G4 "Luxo" (so called, because it looks like the Luxo logo of Pixar turned upside down, the character from Pixar's first short film).  Chances are you were using Tiger OS X 10.4.x; maybe upgraded to Leopard OS X 10.5.x.  It does not support Snow Leopard or above.
My daughter purchased that iMac and we still have it and it works with Leopard OS X 10.5.8.  I do not remember it coming with Quicken 2006, as I would have commandered it for my collection because I was using Quicken Deluxe 2002 up until Intuit released Quicken 2007 for Lion.  But if you say that is where you got it, you must be correct.
Can you restore your newer iMac back to whatever version of OS X that it was running before?  Do you have a Time Machine backup?  Or other suggestions to restore the older OS X are here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20095881#20095881
Downloading the new Quicken 2007 for Lion before you upgraded is usually not an issue.  There is a data upgrade issue BEFORE you upgrade if you, like me, were using a version of Quicken older than 2005.  Then you must use Quicken 2006 or Quicken 2007 PPC version on a Mac that will run it (i.e., pre-Lion or Mountain Lion) to update the older data file to one that will work in Quicken 2007 for Lion.
When you say something about a "qif" file; where are you hearing this and in what context?  This should not come up in this context, but maybe if you were using Quicken on a PC. Were you using Quicken 2006 on a PC and not a Mac before?
Quicken 2006 CD means you are using exactly that and not Essentials: GOOD!
Does your iMac Luxo have Quicken 2006 installed on it?  If not, what version is installed on it?  If not, perhaps you can use your Quicken 2006 CD to install Quicken 2006 and again attempt to access your old Quicken data file and see if this works.
Lastly, if you feel comfortable with emailing me your old data file, I can do the translation work for you and resend it back to you to use with Quicken 2007 in Lion.  I can understand if you feel that this is sensitive data and do not want to share it with a stranger...

  • Apache won't work after 10.5.2 update

Apache won't work, after I installed the 10.5.2 update.
When I type the following in the terminal: sudo apachectl -t

I too had the same problem after the auto update 10.5.2 - specifically the 2008-002 update broke my machine in a number of areas.
I downloaded the package and ran it, this seems to have mopped up the problems caused my the first run.

They do work. I have one and mine is working. Have you tried to reset your iPad? HOlding down teh sleep and home keys until it reboots then try pairing again.
A slightly more drastic thing is to go into the settings and reset all settings. THe downside, you will need to retweak your device but it can help fix keyboard glitches.

my iphone won't work after fatal error occurred installing iOS5.1 have followed allsteps to reconfigure software onto windows still no phone just a usb and itunes picture on screen

Connect the phone directly to the computer, not a hub.
Disconnect all other USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Disable your firewall
    Disable your antivirus
In iTunes if it recognizes the phone click "Restore"
If it doesn't recognize the phone:
Disconnect the phone from the phone end, leave the USB cable plugged into the computer
Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons until the screen turns black, excactly 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP but continue holding the HOME (If an Apple logo appears you have held SLEEP too long; do it over)
While holding HOME connect the cable to the phone
As soon as iTunes recognizes the phone release the HOME button and it should restore.
If neither procedure works note the exact error message and post it.

  • Security and privacy system preferences not working after Lion install.  What to do?

Security and privacy system preference not working after Lion install.  Not sure if it happen with Lion installer or after updating. What to do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
