Page numbers in page panel don't match current page numbers

Hi all,
I have been working with InDesign for a decade now and never had this problem.
I created a document in InDesign CS 5.5, very simple and with consecutive pages, no sections etc.
My page numbers show up correctly on my spreads. BUT, for some reason, the numbers that are shown in the page panel, underneath the page icons, are different. The first page is named "11", followed by 12-17, then the numbers jump to 111, 112 etc. I selected all pages and chose "Numbering and Section Options", setting them all to automatic page numbering, but to no avail.
As I said, the actual page number on the page is unaffected. But this bugs me since I am afraid that the document is somehow messed up.
I am using a simple InDesign document, no book file.
Any idea why this would happen?
Thank you so much!

Thank you - I just found the solution to my problem (after playing around some more), and it turns out to be rather simple. In Numbering & Section Options, the Section Prefix was set to "1" - this field needs to be clear. That's why InDesign would add a 1 to every number.

Create a New window of Type 'Final Window' and Position it in the layout where u want to display the page numbers.
Now, create a text element in the window and create the text like below in the text element.
    P1 Page &SFSY-PAGE& of  &SFSY-FORMPAGES(3CZ)&
    &SFSY-PAGE&                            - Current Page No.

  • Error with master page "insert current page number" when exporting book

Using InDesign CS 5.5 for Windows
Recently upgraded from InDesign CS (the really old one from 2003). I did save a copy of all my old version files and kept the old ID installed just in case (after reading all the horror stories on here).
In my old version of ID, I created a book made up of about 70 documents. Some of these documents are one page, others have multiple pages. In the multiple page documents, I used the "insert ... current page number" character (or whatever the command was in the old version) on a master page, and formatted it to read, for example: Page 1 of 17, Page 2 of 17, Page 3 of 17, etc. When I exported my book to a pdf, it worked fine. (I do not want/have consecutive page numbers throughout the book, only in individual documents. By this I mean my entire book is about 280 pages, but not all of these 280 pages are numbered, just the groups of pages from these multi-page documents. It doesn't read page 1 through 280.)
Got my upgrade to 5.5 a few months ago, added some documents to the book, and (if i remember right) when I saved the book it asked to convert every old version document to the new version, which I said okay. When I exported the book to a pdf, some documents that are longer than 2 pages are now numbered wrong; the numbers are now going like this: Page 1 of 17, Page 2 of 17, Page 2 of 17 (supposed to be page 3), Page 2 of 17 (supposed to be page 4), etc. Every page but page 1 is now page 2 of whatever.
If I open the individual document and export it to pdf, the page numbers work fine. It's only when the document is exported with the book that the page numbers mess up. And it's not all the documents in my book; this error starts at a particular document and continues from that point throughout the rest of the book, affecting any document longer than 2 pages. Multi-page documents before this point in the book export with the correct page numbers.
I create new documents by doing a "save as" with a previously created document and cut and paste as needed, so I'm not having to reformat or set up page numbers on each new document. I don't use layers or styles (I'm sure there's a better way to do what I need, but I've only had time learn the basics, just enough to be functional.)
My attempts to fix this so far (using version 5.5), testing with the first document where the error appears: (1) I've removed the document from the book, deleted the insert current page number character, re-entered the insert current page number character, saved, exported the individual document to pdf and it worked fine. Put it back in the book, save, export, and it's wrong. (2) I took the document out of the book again, exported the document to .idml, saved as new .indd with new name, exported to pdf and it worked fine. Put it back in the book, save, export, and it's wrong. (3) I started up my old ID version, opened the old version of this document, exported to .inx, closed, opened .inx in ID 5.5, saved as new .indd with new name, exported to pdf and it worked fine. Put it back in the book, save, export, and it's wrong. (4) I moved the document up in the book order, putting it above a document that has correctly numbered pages, saved, exported to pdf, and this document was still wrong, but the one that has been numbered correctly all along is still correct. (5) I've compared settings for this document to others that number correctly and cannot find any difference.
It's like the page numbers get hung on "2" when I export the book, but only in the last two-thirds of the book. Sorry it's so lengthy, but I hope this description of my problem is understandable. Any advice, other than going back to my old version documents and starting over?
Thanks for your time and for all the awesome information this forum provides!

    Mr. Spier
Right after I posted my question, I saw a post from last year where somebody had similar problems. (I cringed because I spent almost 3 days researching this problem and never ran across that post; thanks for not scolding me for posting a semi re-run.) I decided to try one of the easier solutions: I opened the problem document from the book panel, went to the master page and deleted the text box containing the page number, copied the page number box from a document that worked correctly, and pasted it into the problem document. Saved that doc, closed, saved book, exported to pdf, and it worked!! The page number problem was fixed. I went back and did the same thing for the other problem documents and they all number correctly now.
Probably not the best way, but for now this will fix it; I may have to do it again next time I add to the book. Although I didn't follow your instructions, I'll mark this as answered since it's working now. If it keeps giving me problems, I'll try the .inx export/new book route.
    thanks for your time

  • Collecting the URL for the current page..

I'd like to collect the complete URL that created the current page. I'd like to pas this information to a succeding dynamic page, so that I can return to the current page.
I have tries using the OWA_UTIL.get_cgi... routines but they seem to be lacking the parameter list to make them complete. The path and page, but no parameters.
Is there an API routine or a technique to accomplish this in PL/SQL?
    Thanks,

  • Pages: page numbers in TOC don't match document

I originally created this document in Word.  I then converted it to Pages.  I had gotten most of the bugs out, then updated Pages just a week or so ago.  When I opened the document in the new version of Pages, the pagination was out of whack.  I got the pagination in the body of the text corrected except for one thing.  In this doc, I have used roman numerals in the front matter, then in the body, I have used 1, 2, 3, etc.  Well, in the TOC, the title of the first section correctly shows as on page 1, but the title of the first chapter is shown as starting on page ii (whereas in the text, it actually would read "2"), similarly, the first subsection in the text is on page 2 (correctly labeled in the text), but in the TOC it reads "ii".  The TOC incorrectly shows roman numerals for all of the subsections in chapter 1, except the second to last one, which correctly reads "13".  The TOC also shows chapter 2 starting on "xvi" whereas in the text it is actually "16".  Then, starting on page 17, to the end of the TOC, all of the numbers are correct.  How do I get Pages to correct the TOC to replace the roman numerals with the standard numerals?  I want to emphasize that the numerals are correct in the body of the text, they are only incorrect in the TOC.  I also want to emphasize again that this problem developed only after I made the most recent update to Pages 5.0 and Mavericks 10.9.

    Peter,
Interesting suggestion.  I actually had a major complaint with Pages 5.  In Pages '09 you could activate a search function to the left of the document, that would allow searching for any term, and would identify and list all of the instances in the document.  This is a tremendous time-saver when editing a large document (in my case, a book) where one needs internal consistency.  I don't understand why they would remove that feature and leave us with only a tiny search box that goes through instances one by one.
From what I read in your forum, it looks like I might lose some formatting again if I return the document to Pages '09.  But, if there is no alternative, that's what I'll do.
Not sure how to archive Pages 5.

  • How to put a few pages together as a panel group in the same screen ?

    Dear Friends,
Hello. I am developing the accounting application of Journal Entry module. I have developed 5 pages for a journal entry: Journal header, Journal Line, Journal total, Journal Error and Journal Approval. I want to put 5 pages together as a panel group in the same screen so that users are convenient to use them. The format is as follows:
    Header | Lines | Total | Error | Approval
When a user click on Header or Lines or Total or Error or Approval, its related page is displayed below it on the screen. But I don't understand how to put "Header", "Lines", "Total", "Error" and "Approval" together as above format and link them to its related page. Can anybody tell me how to do that ? Thanks.
    Lucy

    Mike,
It's correct to make 5 pages as a seperate component.
I am developing an accounting system using PeopleTools by myself.
Because you understand PeopleSoft financial application, please tell me the 2 questions as follows:
First, In Journal Line page, when select "edit Journal" and click button "process", the system check the Journal against Budget, if it's Ok, the System assign Journal ID for the Journal and put "valid" into the field of "Budget Status" and "Journal Status" in Total page. If it's not OK, the system send error message into Error page. Do you know how developer do that ?
Second, In Journal Line Page, when select "Submit Journal" and click button "process", the system send the Journal to Approval page for approval. Do you know how developer do that ?

  • Using iWork 09 Pages I need the first six pages of a document to not be counted as page numbers. I need the seventh page to be numbered as page one. I already know to have a section break between pages 6 and 7 and to use inspector "start at." Not working

In the book I'm formatting, the first page is the title page, the second page is the copyright page, the third through fifth pages are the table of contents, the sixth page is blank, then the text (which I want to number as page one) is the introduction. I have section breaks between the title page, the copyright page, the table of contents, and the introduction. Using the Inspector, Layout, Section, and selecting "Start at" 7 doesn't do anything!

Is is a bit tricky, but it works. On your 6th page (the blank one) go to Insert > Section Break. This will give you a 7th page. Then go to Inspector (blue circle with a white letter i in it) and go to Layout Inspector (2nd tab). Once in thee, go to Section. Check "Start at" and enter the number 1. Then ensure all other toons I there are unchecked.
Then go to Insert, and select Auto Page Numbers. You will find that your 7th page is numbered 1 as you want, but the first six pages will be numbered 1 to 6, which you don't want. But you can then delete the page numbering in that 1st section, leaving your 2nd section, beginning at page 7, numbered as page 1. You'll need to play around a bit as I did, and I would suggest using a test document to play with so you can undo any unwanted actions etc, but with tweaking around, it's doable. This took me ages to sort, so if it works for you, please give me the points :-)

I just found the answer myself. I don't know how to delete my question, so I'll just write the reply to the answer - just in case somebody needs to know: Insert a section brake after the second page and then choose "Start on 3".

How to save a numbers file to a pdf file of multiple pages instead of one giant long page?

    Hi DW,
    Numbers 3.2.2
Instead of Menu > File > Export To,  use Menu > File > Print...
That takes you to Print Preview.
In the Print Setup panel, Click on the Print... button lower right (it won't print yet).
    That opens the Print Dialogue.
Click on the PDF Pop-Up Menu lower left.
Choose Open PDF in Preview or Save as PDF.
That will have page breaks and will be full sized.
    Print from Preview.

  • Page numbering- How can I start with a specific Page #?

I'm using Pages 09 (snow leopard, and Pages on my iPad IOS 4.3.5) and I'm trying to get pages to start numbering using specific numbers.  For example lets say I'm editing chapter 3 of a book which starts on page 84.  Chapter 3 is its own document and always starts numbering with page 1.  I know I could make one large document by pasting all the chapters into a single doc, but I hate working on such large documents.  Editing single chapters at a time is easier to navigate.
Is there anyway to get the page numbering to do this?  I've tried all the options in the page set up and nothing seems to work.  Pages always start with 1 at the begining of a document.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cheers!
    David

In Pages on your Mac you used the inspectors for most functions. You can change starting page numbers in the section tab of the layout inspector.

  • How do i start page numbering in the middle of a document in pages

I need to begin page numbering after the initial pages in my thesis. I can get the page numbers to not appear for the first few pages but when it does begin (say page 4), it counts the previous pages.
I there a way I can get pages (5.2) to count from page 4 onwards?
So that page 4 will read "page 1", page 5 read "page 2" etc.....
    Thanks

Have you divided the document by Inserting Section Breaks?
Have you unchecked Continue from previous section in Section under Document?

"My Mac was stopped suddenly by a power cut. Could this be relevant?"
    Sounds very relevant.
Do you have access to another computer with Numbers installed?
If so, do your files open properly on that computer?
If so, then the problem is your computer itself, which is best posted in a different forum.

Put a section break at the bottom of page 1
Then insert your page number in the footer of page 1.
    Go to page 2 and click in the body of the text;
Inspector > Layout > Section > uncheck Use Previous Headers & Footers > click in Header on page > insert > Page Number
