Page up and down in a mailbox, the Clear key and Print Screen

I have an Apple Pro keyboard ( the one with a numeric keypad on the right side) for an iMac and a wireless mouse. Using the keyboard is VERY confusing. There are many documents and lots of pages on the different key combinations to use for different functions but I could not find one clear document that explains what certain keys do and/or show how to accomplish certain functions... I am a a very frustrated new Apple (formerly Windows) user astonished that I company that is supposedly delivering user friendly, easy to use products provides a keyboard that one cannot figure out.
1. Page Up and Down in Mail
I have some imported mailboxes with a few hundred Emails which I have to mark "read". I could use the Page Down functionality to quickly highlight all messages in a mailbox but could not locate anything that actually works. Apple's document at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5636?viewlocale=en_US indicates that pressing 9 (with Num Lock off) provides Page Down. Num Lock appears to be the Clear key. When I tried to press Clear it deleted messages and no combination worked with 9 ...
I tried all other suggestions from other discussions but nothing worked.
2. The Clear key
I'd appreciate an explanation of what this key is really supposed to do in different applications.
3. Print Screen
Apple's documentation tells me that on my specific keyboard I should use F14 to accomplish this. This doesn't work. It appears that one has to press 3 keys (shift-command-3) to accomplish this. What happened to the one key Prt-Scr key? Is there a key (or can one assign this function to an unused key) to make life a little less "sophisticated"? Is there a way to know which keys are not assigned to any function?
A pointer to an up-to-date document (which provides info that actually works) would be greatly appreciated.

To capture the entire screen to an image, use the key combination ⌘ shift 3.
To capture a selection rectangle, ⌘ shift 4.
To capture the frontmost window, ⌘ shift 4 and then press the space bar.

Page scrolling on an AppleMac would be improved using the alt (+ up/down buttons) instead of the fn key

Scrolling one page at a time is easier if the alt key could be assigned instead of the adopted fn key in conjunction with the adjacent up/down arrow keys. The latter combination is in fact standard (on my MacBook) with Safari and most other applications but not, it seems, with Firefox. However, I'm pleased you've retained the full 'top and bottom' scroll option with the cmd key.

Since it will not boot then a hardware test can't be run. You could try FireWire Target Disk Mode and if it works then access from another Mac to run tests on the new drive. You could also try installing the OS X software from the host computer. If this does not work then professional help should be considered.

Where's the CLEAR key

I've been living with my lovely PB G4 17 for sometime and found it necessary to upgrade to a new MBP 17. To my shock I've lost the "clear" key (fn-6). I would love to remap it to the same spot but nothing seems to do this. I've looked into KeyRemap4MacBook and DoubleCommand with no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction without giving me a lecture on why/what I really need the "clear" key...I need it. It's a very powerful key in the software named "Finale." I'm on Snow Leopard.
BTW: I remaped the right-option key back to being an ENTER key with DoubleCommand but KeyRemap4MacBook did not work (using the latest versions of the software).

Just got a message that Proxi is not compatible with Mail 4.1 and Message 4.1.
It looks like there are compatibility issues with Leopard also...
This was written in March of 2009 from their website.
+There is presently an issue with Proxi and Mail in 10.5.6 that is causing the Proxi Mail plugin to not work properly with POP accounts through Mail. To correct this, go to Macintosh HD/Library/Mail/Bundles and remove ProxiMail.mailbundle. We are working on a more permanent solution to this issue so keep checking back for any Proxi updates.+
It appears they don't put a whole lot of effort into this software. Too bad.

Is it possible to have multiple page sizes and print types in the same pdf?

Is it really possible to have a pdf which has multiple pages and each of them have pages which are of different page sizes (e.g. letter, A4, A3) and print types (e.g. Simplex, Duplex)???

you can definately do different page sizes by using different master pages. You can set the paper type for each master page in the object>master page palette.

Pages - Share and Print - Email document issue

I ran into an issue today on my iPad2 and wanted to see if it was just me or can anyone reproduce this error. If it turns out to be just me, someone help me undertand how to get around the issue. If it is more widespread, where do I report this so it can be resolved in an future release?
Here is what happened.
I received a Word document via e-mail. When I opened it in e-mail and chose to "open with Pages" it worked fine. Imported into Pages sans the font (which I've come to expect). Then I edited the document (it was a quick survey I was taking) and then was ready to send it back to the person who sent it to me. I chose the tools icon, selected "Share and Print" then selected "Email Document" and then chose Word as the format. It converted it and attached the file in a blank e-mail ready for me to address and send.
Well, I wasn't ready to send just yet. So I clicked on "Cancel" and then "Save Draft" which it did successfully. Then I went into email, edited my "Draft" in my Drafts folder, addressed it, etc. and sent it on its merry way. Well, guess what? The file did not come through on the e-mail. Just my text.
I tried "copy and paste" of the file after saving as a draft and it only sent the "picture" of the file ICON and not the file itself. I tried multiple times saving it as a draft and then sending and it never worked.
If I send from within Pages right at the time after "Email Document" is selected, it works every time. It seems to only be when I save the email as a draft from within Pages that it will not send the attachment or something happens to the attachment. I did notice also, that if I edited any "text" from that draft and then saved the draft again, all my edited text wouldn't save either. So any "Draft" saved from Pages I couldn't edit regardless of any attempt.
Draft saving and editing within the email application works as expected.
NOTE: Just before submitting this discussion, I tried the above on my wife's iPad2 with the same results. Anything "saved as a draft" from Pages in e-mail, will not send the attachment. Anything sent directly from within Pages and not saving it as a draft, will send the attachment.
There are times I would like to save it as an attachement, should this work? Thanks everyone!

I am only vaguely familiar with iWork.com. I know it is a cloud based way to share documents with others, but this is what the send to option does when you work with Pages, Numbers or Keynote on the iPad. I would assume that the function performs the same way in iWork.com. - but it is only an assumption.
"Send to" is the command that will let you send that file to your computer the next time you sync with iTunes. It is the way the iPad transfers the file to your computer - the iPad method of file sharing. You can sync files back and forth from iPad to computer with file sharing as long as the app on the iPad is compatible with a similar application on your computer. In your case iWorks apps on both the iPad and your Mac.

Pages, Cocoabooklet and printing

I create our church bulletin in pages and then use cocoabooklet to create the pdf for printing. We have recently started outsourcing our printing. The first page (front and back of the bulletin) is in color and for some reason the fonts are darker and slightly blurred when they print it. The inside black and white pages look great.
On one occasion there was one paragraph on the back page that looked crisp and correct but the rest blurred. I cannot figure out why. Since it wasn't the whole page affected, I thought something in my file was different about the fonts chosen, but it's not. It's all True Type Font (Californian FB) and I can't see any formatting differences throughout the page. It prints crisp on my printer (though I have a hard time getting the color to match the screen).
Anyone have any ideas or a similar issue with fonts bleeding/blurring?

It sounds like you have used Transparency or Reflections/Shadows which also use transparency.
Transparency gets rendered at a very low 72 dpi bitmap in .pdfs output using OSX's ColorSync. This was introduced to make life difficult for users trying to print commercially, but to not spoil the surprise Apple has chosen not to warn them.
Do not use transparency in any form is the safest way out.

Yep. For all us spreadsheet geeks, this is a real sinker. Anyway, here's my workaround. Not free, unfortunately. I have a macro program called QuicKeys installed on my Mac that I've used for countless years, and which I highly recommend for other reasons. Anyway, one of QuicKeys' many features is simulating a scroll wheel using the keyboard. I have it simulating a cell-by-cell scroll using cmd-arrow keys. The only drawback is that I have to release the cmd key each time I want to move another cell.

I understand your notebook is frozen with a blank screen.
Press and hold the power button for 8+ seconds to force shut down.
Wait a few seconds and turn the notebook back on.

Unexpected behaviour upon pressing the 'Enter' key on dialog screen

Hi.
I have two dialog screens that exhibit unexpected behaviour when i pressed the 'Enter' key.
Screen 1: When I pressed the 'Enter' key, the focus shifted to another input field and the content of the previous input field is cleared. The thing is, I did not have any codes in PAI for 'Enter'. Why is this happening?
Screen 2: On load, some of the fields on this screen will be disabled. However, when I pressed the 'Enter' key, all the disabled fields become enabled. Again, I did not have any codes that handle the 'Enter' key in PAI. Why is this happening?
Any help is appreciated.

Yes, I have used CHAIN... END CHAIN.
I thought that CHAIN... END CHAIN allows my input fields to be re-activated after an error message is displayed.
How would CHAIN... END CHAIN cause the unexpected behaviour?
