I'm trying to do it using headers, but am not have any luck accomplishing this or in finding online help that addresses this issue.
Thanks in advance,

There are no facing pages in Pages 5, along with 100+ other missing features.
Use Pages '09 if you have it.

    I would think what you tried would have fixed it, so there has to be something elsewhere. Did you check the margins in the layout inspector?

  • Non facing pages with two masters

    My pre-press contact has advised me to create documents without facing pages checked. I'm not 100% sure why since I'll be exporting to .pdf anyway, allowing them to impose the pages.  She just said that facing pages "nearly always cause problems."
    However, I am creating a large conference program book with a left and right master.  I know how to set up two separate masters. What concerns me is the inevitable changes--pages inserted, pages deleted. With facing pages In Design 'figures it out.' As long as you don't have uneven columns or pull quotes in the margins, it's not too much trouble to insert a single page within the book during the design process.
    I've played around with the no facing pages, two masters, and as best as I can see, adding a page is as bad as I feared: I would have to manually reset every single page after that one to the proper master.  I HAVE to be missing something as that would get old really fast in a 100+ page program that will probably morph multiple times.
    On a related note, certain pages or sections of pages, will have unique footers, aligned either left or right. (ie Welcome from the President; Sunday--Session 1, etc.) I will obviously strive to do these last for the reasons mentioned above.  But, again, is there am InDesign trick that I'm missing? This can't be uncommon.
    Straight-up design I can handle, but dealing with large, complex documents is something I don't have much experience with.
    Thanks for your advice.

    Take a different printer. She is telling you complete nonsense. Maybe that SHE has problems, but it is not caused by InDesign, it is caused by HER.
    If you have a double sided printed publication you have to set it up as facing pages and you have to export as single pages.
    In combination with the document setup to facing/non-facing pages you will have an influence on many things in your document:
    Paragraph alignment toward or away from spine (as it often used for page numbers).
    Anchored objects with toward and from spine settings.
    Keep options.
    If a printer is not able to handle facing pages look for a different printer.

  • Using Pages, how do I get out of "facing pages?"

    How do I get out of "facing pages" when using PAGES ?

    Hi Joanne, I don'y have Pages, but perhaps we can work backwards from this info in it's PDF on usage...
    Here are ways to view facing pages:
    Click View in the toolbar and choose Page Thumbnails to view facing pages in the thumbnail view.
    Click the Page View control in the bottom-left corner of the window, and then choose Two Up from the pop-up menu to view facing pages side by side in the main document window.

  • Help please with Page Numbers & Facing Pages in Book Layout

    I am having some dramas with my book project which is 168 pages including cover.  I have created 22 different documents for the chapters and other pages.  I had everything in a book and have been able to create a PDF, but then I needed to remove the cover so it can be printed separately and to change the page numbering to start at 1 after the contents page.
    When I added numbers after the Contents page, it pushed all the pages out of order - ie what was previously sitting on the left was now sitting on the right etc.
    Removing the cover also impacted on individual spreads.
    Since then I have:
    - Updated my program to resolve an issue where Indesign kept shutting down when I tried to change page numbers.
    - Recreated the book twice, but find the spreads are all out of whack as I add them - doesn't appear to be auto paginating.
    - Called Adobe and got given tutorials that have not helped me resolve the issue because I have followed the tutorials but it hasn't resolved the issues I am having.
    Is there a way that you can stop autopagination and tell the pages which side they need to be on?  I currently have one chapter finishing on an even number of pages and the next starting on an odd, even though there are an even number of pages in that chapter, which is bizarre?  How do I fix this please?
    I would sincerely appreciate anyone who can tell me how to fix this.  I have read and watched so many tutorials showing how to set it up but there doesn't appear to be any that help with trouble shooting when you have followed the process but something bizarre happens.
    Is there a way that you can dictate the sides that the pages should be on?  Can you turn off the auto pagination anywhere?  This is an urgent request.
    Thanks,
    Hayley
    PS  I started in CS6 and am now using CC.

    A few things to consider:
    Not all books are the same, but many begin on page one, which is a right page, and as it follows, all odd pages will be on the right with even pages on the left. If your book had the cover as part of the book, I wonder if that meant that your first page was on the left?
    Books leaves hold two pages (front and back), and therefore book page counts need to be divisible by two. You say your book is 168 pages including the cover, which you moved to another document, leaving 167 book pages. If you were counting the back page, that might make for a 166 page book, which would be OK, but depending on how it will be printed, the page count may need to be divisible by 4, 8, 16, or higher, and the printer may need to add blank pages to get to the correct page count. Can you tell us how your book will be produced?
    Many people like to keep  their chapters in even-numbered page count, so that new chapters may start on the right. This sometimes requires you to have a blank left-sided page at the end of some chapters. This blank page is sometimes labeled "This page intentionally left blank" or some such wording (so as to let the reader know there wasn't a misprint), but isn't strictly necessary. Sometimes an ornament in the center of the page will do the same job.
    Do you think these are things you would like to have in your book, or are you opposed to them for any reason? The answers may narrow the advise you get from the forum users.

  • How do I display PDF in 'book' or 'facing pages' mode?

    I don't mean VIEW> PAGE DISPLAY > TWO-UP.
    I've created a PDF document designed to be a book. I need the first page (the cover) to come up by itself, or with a blank on the left. Then all subsequent pages to display side by side, odd numbers on the right.
    When I open the document in Acrobat Reader Pro it displays it just fine, automatically. But with Adobe Reader it displays page one first, on the left side, and page two on the right ... making the whole document out of sync. There is no blank on the left, nor does it display page one all by itself (as does 'Preview' in Mac).
    The document is going out to a dozen people who are helping with the edit. It is imperative that they view it properly. They will all have different Readers. I'd like to recommend they all get Adobe Reader for now (as it is free and comes for both Windows and Mac). But I have to be able to tell them how to set the preferences to get a (BOOK MODE or FACING PAGES).
    Any help would be most appreciated, thank you,
    Ben

    see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5979c/0
    or you could insert a blank back cover and blank inside front cover page prior to the cover and page 1 respectively.

  • Facing page side head setup

    Hi all,
    How can I setup a side head on a facing page layout, as I have to produce a book over 1000 pages with a paragraph number on the outside margin of the facing pages, that mean the paragraph number on left hand page show on left hand size but on right hand page show on right hand size. I try to set a paragraph style or Anchored object and auto numbering to locate paragraph number, however, if there is update and cause the text reflow to next page, all the left hand paragraph number cannot automatic switch to right hand margin, I have to check the subsequence page again (over 1000pages).
    Is there any way to make it automatically so after the text reflow the paragraph number can locate to the right position without manual adjust.
    Thank for your help in advance.

    Got it, now I put the paragraph number on top of each paragraph, leading 0 pt and baseline shift one line, aligment "away from spine" and Keep option set Keep with next 1 line, all fine now! thank for all your help.

  • Possible to always display page number in footer on outside of facing page?

    Is it possible to configure the page number in a footer to always display on the outside of the facing page?

    In the Layout Inspector, in the Section tab, check "Left and right pages are different", then put the page numbers in the appropriate places on the left and right pages.

  • Fixed layout ePub problem with facing pages

    Hi,
    I have a 240 page book made out of multiple inDesign files that I'm trying to convert to a fixed layout ePub. Everything works like a charm except the transition from one file to the next.
    The book uses facing pages setting so when the file ends for example in page 40, it is a left hand page, and the next file starts from page 41 and that is a right hand page. After exporting to fixed layout epub, the resulting file has blank pages between the files. What I mean is after the left hand page 40 there is an empty right hand page, then an empty left hand page followed by right hand page 41.
    What would be the easiest solution for this?

    Hi,
    I found the problem from the book panel so case closed. In "Book Page Numbering Options" I had "Insert Blank Page" selected. This didn't cause any problems when exporting to pdf but resulted in extra blank pages when exporting to ePub.
    Attached is a screenshot from the book panel. The problem occurred between all the files.

  • New doc facing pages?

    I'm trying to simply create a new doc starting on page 2 with facing pages. I can handle all except for the start page being 2 (or any even number). The resulting document has to be manually re-numbered starting with 2. Any way to create the new doc via javascript to start with page 2-3 spread?

    var myDoc = app.documents.add();
    var myFirstPage = myDoc.pages[0];
    var mySec = myFirstPage.appliedSection;
    mySec.continueNumbering = false;
    mySec.pageNumberStart = 2;
    var mySecondPage = myDoc.pages.add();

  • Book protocol.  Facing pages are imp.  What page # starts book?

    Just sent out a PDF of a 250 page book to ten people. Its important that facing pages synch up ... text one side, related photo the other.
    Some of the people (Acrobat Reader Professional), when they open the PDF - the first page on the left is a blank ... thus throwing the entire document out by a page, and none of the facing pages match up.
    Others (Preview, Adobe Reader) open the PDF file and the pages are as I laid them out ... 1st page on the left, second on the right. So all the odd numbers are on the left, the even numbers on the right.
    Someone just informed that book layouts require that all the odd numbers are on the right, even on the left.
    1. Is there an essential protocol? Even left, odd right? I just looked a bunch of books, seems there is.
    2. Why would some readers plug in a blank on the first (left side) page?
    3. How do I make a PDF that can't be displayed incorrectly?
    All ears,
    Ben

    The reason for page 1 not having a facing page in the Professional version (I am guessing) is to copy the way books work. The first page of a book faces the inside of the cover, not another page.
    Did you have the Pages file set up with Facing Pages? (In the Inspector, Document, a check box under Document Margins.) I tried Print as PDF with a file, once with facing pages, once without. Both showed up in preview as a list of single pages, so you obviously know more about this than I do. But at least if you check Facing Pages, you'll see the thumbnails the way Acrobat Reader Professional shows them.
    Sorry I can't really help.

  • Previewing Pages document in Preview shows page numbers incorrectly

    Previewing Pages (5.2) document in Preview (7.0) shows page numbers incorrectly. Regardless of starting page number preview shows as Page 1.
    Suggestions appreciated...

    That appears to be YABIP5 (Yet Another Bug In Pages 5].
    Pages .09 documents are fine.
    No prizes however for finding bugs in Pages 5/5.2 it's swarming with them.

  • Question regarding bleeding and facing pages.

    Hello,
    i'm in trouble with my first InDesign document which is a 96 pages Magazine. It will be printed on A3 sheets stapled in the middle. My printing guy said that it's ok as A4 pages with 3mm bleed.
    So now when i'm trying to export as a printed pdf (i check mark that i want to use the documents bleeding settings) it exports with sections from left and right depending on the pages (the left page exports with ?? i guess 3 mm ?? bleed from the right page and so on). If i override the bleeding settings and i set it to 0mm it all ok but i fear that some pictures or text might get cut off since i have all planned with the bleed markers in indesign.
    And i can't uncheck the facing pages since i have some graphics (charts and so on) that spread from one page to another (on same spread).
    My question is ... is there anything i can do and still use bleeds or (ignore "inside bleeds" or something) or is it ok to use the export as spreadsheet instead of individual pages since he wanted A4 pages?
    Any help for a newbie would be appreciated. Thank you.

    You should ask the printers to use PUR (polyurethane reactive) Bind when making a perfect bound book - that's a much stronger glue than EVA. It won't even break apart or fall apart going from freezing cold (out in the car over night) to being warmed up, which happens with EVA binding. But the PUR bind seems to be a lot more popular and stronger.
    Failing that, getting the book threadsewn also helps to keep pages together. If you have a large print run and need these to last, then I suggest perfect binding them with a threadsewn finish.
    I've definitely seen and done 96pp saddle stitched (well personally I have imposed, printed and delivered these). You might have to sacrafice a drop in weight on the body text. It can get ugly, but it's definitely doable.
    My suggestion here would be to ask the printers for a similiar 96pp saddle stitch sample that they've done before, to make sure you're happy with it.
    In fact, you can ask them to send you out a dummy (a blank version of the book trimmed and folded) to make sure you're happy with it.
    It really is disppointing to get a printed job back from the printers and you discover you are not happy with the binding method.

  • 1 sheet with multiple pages will not show various page numbers

    I'm having a difficult time differentiating between pages and sheets in Numbers. For example, I have 1 sheet with 5 pages. I am inserting page numbers (done, re-done several times after looking through the forum), but each page will not print with a sequential number (ie. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Instead, each page is 1. When I scroll over the number "1" on, say, page 3, the number 3 shows up. But unfortunately t will not print with anything but page number 1.

    I am having a problem that is close to this, when I try and preview my site in browser some of the pages show up as a white and gray blocks only.  I can not seem to find any reason or connection to what pages are doing this.  The only page that has a video seems to work fine.  Its almost acting like the links are broken or something.  Any help would be welcomed.
    Thanks
    Mike
