Pages documents "too old to open?"

I have folders of important documents created using older versions of Pages that will not open in the new version. I do not have an older version of Pages on this (new) computer. Is there a known solution?

You should still have your older software in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages 5 will not open Pages '08 files and does a poor job of opening Pages '09 files. It also has over 90 features removed.
You can archive /trash Pages 5 and continue using your older version.

    Thanks

If you migrated your old system to the new Mac you should still have Pages '08 in your Applications/iWork folder.
Open your document in Pages '08 and Export it to Word .doc/.docx and open that in Pages 5.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Message, this document too old can't be opened.  To open it , save it with Pages 09

Keep getting the message, this document too old can't be opened, save it with Pages '09 first?  I recently purchased the new Pages, yellow Icon.  My old Pages was '08.  My new Pages doesn't say what it is except the version 5.0.1. Where do I get version '09 to save all my of Pages docs. so I can open them.  Or do I just keep my old '08 version active and open them through it?

You can use iWork 08 on MacOs Mavericks for the PAges 08 documents. If you eally need to have them in Pages 5 you can try in Pages 08 save the document as/export to Word format and then open in Pages 5.
I would just continue using iwork 08. PAges 5 is a mess.

  • I can't open my document on Page 09 (too old !), so what ?

I can't open my documents on Page 09 (too old !), so what ?
I just buy a new imac and grrrrr

Pages 5 can not open Pages '08 files, you must first open and resave them in Pages '09.
Pages 5 may actually damage files opened from previous versions, proceed with caution and don'r save until you have checked them.
Read the reviews of Pages 5, it is not an upgrade as such, much more a downgrade.

Pages 5 will not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • Pages document is too old to open???

I bought a new Macbook Air and loaded Pages 5.01 which i think is latest version (sometimes called 09 (????) ). When I attempt to open a Pages document created in an older version of Pages I get an error message saying that the document can't be opened because it is too old. It says I should save it in Pages 09 first. Great advice since it will not open in 09 so that I can save it.  It was created and saved in Pages 08 v 3.03 . Anyone have any ideas?

Pages 5 is the newest version, sometimes referred to as iWork 2013. The new versions cannot open any iWork '08 or earlier documents or templates. You will get an error saying to open the files in iWork '09 then open them in the new version. I suggest that you buy a retail copy of iWork '09 from a third party such as Amazon or eBay & then update to the new iWork apps in the Mac App Store. You might check this link for the iWork '09 trial. I have no idea if it is still available.

  • Pages "document can't be opened"... Important document! Please help...

I made a document in pages this morning and attempted to open it just now, but it says "document can't be opened". I have tried restarting the app and ipad, nothing seems to work. I can't email it to myself either, because it can't create an email or export the document because the 'creating email, page just loads forever. I need this important document ASAP, please, do you have any suggestions? The app and my ipad 2 are both updated.
    Thank you!

When this has happened to me, I have never been able to successfully open the document.
Have you tried going to iCloud.com and see if you can open the file on your computer? If that doesn't work, more than likely the document isn't going to open. It's corrupt for some reason, and without being able to get into the file, there is no way to email it or change the format as you already know,

  • "pages document could not be opened" Message

I've been experiencing a problem with Pages lately where the application will not open documents previously created in the same program. When going back to the file at a later date and attempting to open, I get a "pages document 'xxxx.pages' could not be opened" error message with no other information. Trashing preferences and repairing disk permissions does not help. Anybody else experiencing this problem? Any solutions?

There shouldn't be a problem having more than one version of Pages on your Mac. I have both Pages 3.0.2 & 2.0.2. It may be that OS X is set to open all Pages documents with Pages 2. Highlight a known Pages 2 document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages 3. If Pages 3 is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages 3 application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages 3. You can then double-click the Word documents & they will open in Pages 3.

  • Pages 08 docs 'too old' to open in Pages 5.

It tells me to first save them in Pages 09 but I don't have it!
What's more, I can no longer get it because Pages 5 has replaced it in the App Store!
A bit confused. Any ideas? I'm willing to buy Pages 09, even though that's ridiculous, but how?

Same problem here. A temporary fix is to export Pages 08 documents as Word files, and then open the Word versions in Pages 5.
I saw an Apple genius about this problem  and she gave me Pages 09 at no charge, but also said there's no solution, presently, except to do as the warning message says - save them in 09 first and then reopen them into Pages 5. To my knowledge, there's no way to convert them en masse, so it has to be done individually.

  • Ipad pages: document can't be opened

I've been using pages to write a paper on my iPad. I've opened and closed the document several times with no problem. Tonight I tried to email a pdf of the finished document from pages. Not only was this not successful, I can no longer open this document at all (though no problem with other documents). I've tried rebooting the ipad, updating pages, and updating iOS--still no success. Any other suggestions? Need to email a pdf of this to a PC to submit for a class ASAP.  :(

If you use iCloud with Pages, go into iCloud.com using a browser on your computer - not the iPad - and see if the document is in there. Download it and see if you can open it that way.
You could try restoring from a backup as well if you backed up when you synced - and if the document is in the backup. You will be restoring your iPad to the condition it was in last Friday when you last synced.
You could also quit Pages, reboot the iPad and hope that the document will open after that.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Pages Document can't be opened

I am using pages on my iPad. I have been working for several weeks on a document. I tried to open the document on my iPad and it says "document can't not be opened". When I go to pages for iCloud and try to open the document I get the message "You need a newer version of pages for iCloud to open this document".
Is there anyway to recover my document? I have hours and hours of work and I would hate to lose it.
    Please Help.

When this has happened to me, I have never been able to successfully open the document.

  • Pages documents will no longer open in Microsoft Word.

    IWork 08 -- Microsoft Office 2004
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

If I right click on the .pages file it no longer gives me an option to open with Word.
Nothing can open a .pages file except pages. To be opened with Word, Pages needs to share/export as .doc.

  • I saved a document in pages, a 25 page document, and when I opened up pages today only 10 pages were there. Please is there any way I can get some of my work back?

I have a macbook. This has never happened before. I 100% saved my document. I tried clicking on "revert to saved" with no luck. Please someone help me, I cannot write all of this again.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use Pages. There's a Pages Support Community where everybody uses Pages. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/iwork/pages

  • Dimension of Pages document too large to display

I'm working on a large banner for a client (3 meters wide, 1.5 meters high) and Pages doesn't seem to be able to display the whole document when I choose fit page. Have I run into a limitation of the app? Is it a bug? Any workaround?
    Thanks!

The smallest scale is 25%, which translates to 750x 375mm or roughly 2125 x 1063 pixels, viewable on larger iMacs. Works on mine in both Pages '09 and Pages 5.
What version of Pages are you using?
Have you tried scaling the banner?
