Pages for Mac document can't be opened on Pages for Ipad?

If I create a doc with any of the templates availables in Pages for Mac (Mountain Lion, and stored on iCloud), shouldn't be possible to edit it in the Pages for iPad (IOS 7) version? It just says "Document can't be opened" or something like that.

When you create a document in iWork on the mac, a lot of formatting is lost when you save it to iCloud,
That is not true to my knowledge, as you can reopen the file from iCloud on the Mac without problem.
or you try to open it in iWork for iOS.
Again, where are you getting this from? My understanding is that formatting from OSX is retained but a degree of it can't be edited or created in iOS.

Where are you? Generally you can get phone support depending how and when you bought either your device or software.
Yes unfortunately Apple periodically makes statements that are not true and has been held to account by the consumer authorities. It has happened here in Australia and the EEC has done the same. Unfortunately it is based in the USA where in recent times corporations have not been held to account.

  • [Solved] Document can't be opened.

Had just set the number of columns in a document incorrectly on my ios 7 iPad with latest Pages version, was hitting command-Z on my bluetooth keyboard to undo, when Pages froze, then crashed, then "Document can't be opened." on either iPad or iPhone (not paying $20 to check if opens on MacBook Pro).
Document still can't be opened; frustrating; redo-ing; spilled milk; etc.
Can export the file as .pages, but neither Zamzar nor PagesConverter0 were able to open document (Zamzar even after compressing as .zip on both OSX and Windows 7, PagesConverter0 on Windows 7 appears to be looking for an .xml file that doesn't exist.
Tried opening various parts of the .pages file in Windows Word and in Adobe Reader, but to no avail (Reader wouln't open at all, and Word gave me a list of encoding choices, all of which would have opened the document as different flavors of complete jibberish)
Edit: Added some things I did which didn't work.
[Solved]: Logged into iCloud.com on MacBook Pro and the document opened fine there; I "downloaded a copy" as pages and PDF and doc, then changed some text while still on the website, saw that the document had "saved," then was able to open it again in Pages for iPad and iPhone.
tl;dr: try opening it in iCloud.com's Pages (beta as of the writing of this message)

I have just lost access to a document I created in Pages on my iPad. I get the "document can't be opened" error, but there is nothing I seem to be able to do. I can't email it to myself.
Please explain how you got the content back. I am really worried about losing what I've done.
    Thanks.

  • HT1750 Pages, This document can't be opened because it's too old.  To open it, save it with Pages 09 first          still can't open pages document

I recently purchased a new Mac and I am having difficulty opening older Pages documents.
Pages, This document can't be opened because it's too old.  To open it, save it with Pages 09 first          still can't open pages document

Either you have access to Pages ’08 v3, Pages ’09 v4, or neither. One of these older, but more functional versions of Pages can open, and export the document in question to Word. Preview on OS X 10.9.5 and Yosemite can view Pages ’08 documents (in my experience). It is not obvious to me that Preview may be using the installed Pages ’09 v4.3 to assist in opening these '08 documents.
Once opened in Preview, you can select/paste text into Pages v5.2.2, or v5.5. If you want the images from the PDF, then export it from Preview as PDF, and then drag/drop onto latest free LibreOffice icon in the Dock, which will open the PDF for editing. Select, copy, and paste the images into Pages v5, or incorporate into Text boxes, or Shapes. When pasted, images will be in their original size/resolution, not necessarily as small as they appear in the PDF.
If the second paragraph is a chore, then follow Peggy's advice above on the sources for purchase of Pages ’09.
In the future, I would not recommend trusting document architecture to Apple, and use a more accessible format (.doc/x) for better cross-platform access, longevity, and application choice. You may find LibreOffice, or Office for Mac 2011 a better choice for features.

  • Pages error: document can't be opened.

I use my pages app for most of my writings.
I Have a lot of important documents in there that I use every day. Every time time I finish editing one of them, I always sync it to iCloud, to make sure it's backed up safely.
I also have pages installed in my iPhone and Mac.
Today I tried to open one of my documents using the iPad, but a little message appears: "The document can't be opened".
Naturally, I've tried opening using my iPhone, Mac and iCloud website, but they all display the same message. The website says it can't download the file.
I opened all the others documents to make sure they're all working. So the problem seems to be with this specific document.
I also tried emailing it, and was successful, but the document won't open. When I try deleting it from my Mac an weird message also appears:
“Document” cannot be converted. Please install a newer version of iWork.
I have no idea how to fix this problem.
The only thing which I can think of that may have cause the problem is that, sometimes after uploading to iCloud, I also open pages in my iPhone just to download and keep it safe there also. Maybe during this transfer the file got corrupted somehow.
It's an important document that I need to recover.
    I appreciate any suggestions.

    I agree with weathertx.
What in the h*** are they doing?
I hit the ALL STOP butting on upgrading to Mavericks when stuff started going sideways - this is just the latest.
Trying to use iWork for the first time - and same issue.  Created a document on my iPad in Pages (I will check for update to pages but there is none indicating I need to in my App store)....and sent that pages file to my Mac Air in DropBox - tried to open "missing XML file" error and when I open the package - there really is NO XML file.  I am not a programmer and should not have to be - to create or complie a missing system file that it needs.
Wait a sec.. WORD works but I import a file made in Pages App to Pages and is does not on my Mountian Lion MacAir..?  What?  *pinches self*
This cannot be fixed by us.  I know that I am making far too many trips to the bug page these days - this is all starting to remind me of days gone buy when I left the PC world for this same reason.  I don't want to be a beta tester.  There is no money in this for me.
In fact it's the reverse - this is costing me $$.
    This is not very encouraging.
Pathetic.  Apple should be looking over the fence at this type of thing.  Thier users are the ones that you want to keep, shoudl be your greatest testimonial.

  • Document can't be opened in pages

Created a doc in pages on  my ipad.  Now it says "document can't be opened".  Will let me copy but not email or save to itunes.  It is in the icloud but tells me I need a newer version of pages for icloud.  Won't let me open on my mac either.  Can anyone help - need this file!  Have checked on other forums and some people say to open in an older version - how can I download an older version of pages either on Ipad or mac.  Have already tried deleting pages app and reinstalling.

After upgrading the iPad, iPhone, and Mac to the brand-new Pages (and latest OS numbers released on October 22), had the problem Sandro described:
Created a document in iPad Pages
Opened and edited the document in Mac Pages
Got "Document can't be opened" when attempting to open the document in iPad Pages
My solution: power off then power on iPad. Now the Pages documents open fine on the iPad too.
    Good luck to everyone else.

    Thanks

If you migrated your old system to the new Mac you should still have Pages '08 in your Applications/iWork folder.
Open your document in Pages '08 and Export it to Word .doc/.docx and open that in Pages 5.

  • Pages "document can't be opened"... Important document! Please help...

I made a document in pages this morning and attempted to open it just now, but it says "document can't be opened". I have tried restarting the app and ipad, nothing seems to work. I can't email it to myself either, because it can't create an email or export the document because the 'creating email, page just loads forever. I need this important document ASAP, please, do you have any suggestions? The app and my ipad 2 are both updated.
    Thank you!

When this has happened to me, I have never been able to successfully open the document.
Have you tried going to iCloud.com and see if you can open the file on your computer? If that doesn't work, more than likely the document isn't going to open. It's corrupt for some reason, and without being able to get into the file, there is no way to email it or change the format as you already know,

Why some docx documents can't be opened by using Pages '08?

So Henrik .docx can be opened in Pages?
The person posting the problem states that some .docx can be opened and other .docx cannot be opened. Officially, Brian Jones has published that Apple iWork '08 has support of a sort. I am happy to let you have the link library, but I would not want to work my way further into the ins and outs of this situation which is still far from sorted. /hh

  • Ipad (OS 5.1.1) using pages incompatible with icloud.  If I open up one of the docs from icloud, I can no longer open it on my ipad.  Looks like the pages version gets updated to a version that is incompatible with my ipad.

I have the original ipad (OS 5.1.1) using pages 1.7.2 and backing up to icloud.  If I open up one of the docs from icloud, I can no longer open it on my ipad.  Looks like the pages version gets updated to a version that is incompatible with my ipad.  Is there anyway stopping icloud from changing the version and is there a way to recover the old version of the document on my ipad?

Upgrade to Snow Leopard - it's compatible with the latest version of iTunes, and still supports PowerPC applications.
    $19.99 - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Snow Leopard is required if you wanted to upgrade to Lion, anyway, which you may want to in the future if the latest version of iTunes no longer supports Snow Leopard.

  • "Document can't be opened."

"Document can't be opened."  Appears when I try to open Pages documents.  I listen with access to documents on iPhone 5, I edit them at same time on ipad 2.  Issue began after trip to FL upon return docs would not open.
I ise icloud to save my documents across formats.  I have an iphone 5, an ipad 1 & 2, and a mac pro desktop.  none of these can open my documents now, and i have an extensive number of documents.  over 100k of orginal writing, that i thought was save on my apple systems.  Why didn't iCloud save my documents in a format that could be opened?
I found that I can download on the desktop to another format and get them to open, so I did not lose it all this time, but what happened, and how do I fix it.  Down loading each individual document is hard.  I am doing it and moving to google drive, but need to know if I can relie on iCloud as a safe storage media, and if I can fix the opening problem I currently am experiencing?  Help!

  • Error message: document can't be opened

Documents stored in Pages app show this error message when I try to open them. Also have had documents disappear from Pages.

I have reason to believe this is due to a bug with the new version of Pages.
I use Pages on my iPad for many of my main documents. All was well until the 1.6.1 (557) update a couple of days ago. Then, I started to encounter the "This document can't be opened" message with my larger documents.
Not only could/can I not open them on my iPad, but I could not download the affected Pages docs in iCloud. It gave me an error. As such, I also could not forward them as email attachments. (It told me the Filename was (Null).)
Fortuitously, I have access to another iPad with an older version of Pages. I configured it to use my iCloud ID and synced my documents. I could then open the affected documents using the older version of Pages and archive them. To "migrate" them from the older version of Pages (on my older iPad) to the newer version (on my iPad2), I had to send them to myself as .doc format email attachment. Of course, this has messed up with some formatting, but I can get to my text, at least
If someone at Apple wants to contact me, I can forward samples for your investigation, but I really think you messed up on this from a QA perspective. I came very close to believing my documents were corrupt when they obviously *are not*. All evidence supports that it is an file incompatibility issue between the two versions of the App.
    Kind regards

  • Error: "Document can't be opened on this machine"

I have two ebooks that I bought from amazon.com in 2003 and 2005 that won't open after reinstalling everything on my laptop. I used my adobe ID to set up Digital Editions, but it gives the error: "This document can't be opened on this machine. Please contact the site where you obtained the document to download another copy."
I contacted amazon.com and they say that they only promised to have the ebook available for download for 60 days.
I sent a message to Adobe support last week about the problem and haven't received a reply yet.
Why would these ebooks be readable for over 5 years and not be readable now? It seems that Adobe's ebook DRM is broken here and I'm not getting a solution from anyone. From what I read on the net, I'm not the only one having this problem with Digital Editions.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I just found this information about ebook usage from the publisher of one of my ebooks that I bought in 2003 from amazon.com that now doesn't open in Digital Editions.
"Usage Rights for Wiley Adobe E-Books
Any Wiley e-book you purchase will come with certain restrictions that allow Wiley to protect the copyrights of its products.   After you purchase this Wiley Adobe E-Book title, you:
May use the provided link to download the file up to 4 times onto different computers. This link is accessible in the My Account section of this website or from the original e-mail.
Must download it within 14 days of purchase
May not move the file to a different computer
May not lend, sell or give the e-book to another user
May not copy the e-book file
May copy/paste anything up to a page of text, 10 pages total, every 7 days
May not copy/paste diagrams, figures, or artwork
    May annotate text in e-book"
The first bullet contains a restriction that limits the use of an ebook to approximately 5 to10 years given the 3 to 5 year life of a PC and the biannual frequency that I've had to reinstall Windows from a reformatted disk to correct problems.
I don't remember being told this in 2003 when I bought the book from amazon.com. If it was added since that that time, then it is a change of our sales agreement and I don't believe that it can be done after the fact.
Basically, I would never have bought an ebook with a life of 5 to 10 years and now that I know that this is the publisher's usage policy I will never buy another Adobe ebook. It the equivalent of buying a printed book with vanishing ink.
