Pages v.5, trouble with section break placement

I have a document in which the first two pages should have no pagination, the Introduction is page 1, with the number placed bottom center, and the following pages should be numbered from 2, placed at upper right.
I thought I knew how to do this. The first pages now lack page numbers. At the end of the material of the second page I do a section break. Then for the next page, which is an Introduction, I insert a page number in the center of the footer. Next I should do another section break. This I do. A blue runs from the last word to the right column. In the footer of this page I insert page number 1.
Unfortunately, this "1" becomes a permanent property of the footer of all subsequent pages as if I had simply typed "1". I click on the header of the following page, go the menu, Insert->Page Number
so that the next number, 2, appears in the header.
If I place the mouse pointer at the end of the text of the Introduction and do a section break,

Can you try rewriting that please?
I am finding it extraordinarily difficult to follow.

Acrobat (Adobe PDF Printer and PDFMaker ) doesn't recognize the Section breaks. It never has as far as I am aware. The easiest thing to do is to manually break up a copy of the MS Word Document into the Sections you need and then create the PDFs from those MS Word documents.

Large Word document imported into Pages with "Section Break Problems"

Hi there,
I am importing a large Word document with many photos (>250 pages) into Pages. Now, the problem is that when using the "page thumbnail" window to the left it marks all my windows with a yellow border.
This means that I can't duplicate single pages - it will duplicate the whole stuff. Same thing for delete.
I can go to the last character of each page and insert a "section break". This creates single pages. But it seems a bit odd to me, and with >250 pages, this is quite some work too.
Any idea what I can do to solve quickly the issue?

Sections are what they say they are natural breaks in the document.
Each section usually having headers footers and other basic content in common.
Effectively just like chapters in a book or specifically designed pages in a magazine or report.
If your text naturally flows from one page to the next then they should stick together.
If on the other hand you are treating them all like single leaves of paper to be shuffled around, then you need a section break at the end of each page.
3 ways you can quickly do this:
1. There is a unique start to each page such as a return followed by a particular word. You can search on this combination replacing it with a section break followed by the word.
2. You can make a short cut to do this from the keyboard
3. You can copy a section break and paste it at the end of each preceding page.
4. You can transfer by copying and pasting the content into a Layout mode document where every page is its own section.
As with most work, planning, organisation and thinking before you leap, pays off in the long run.

Cannot copy a 2 column pages document with section breaks

I have created a 5 page document with 2 columns on each page, section breaks dividing 3 sections so that I have a different header on each section. When I go to the edit menu, I cannot select "select all" and consequently, cannot copy and paste that whole document.
Where did I go wrong?

This should be asked in the iWebs forum.
iWeb has set layouts. Choose the one you want say with 2 columns and then add your text/images to it.
There are also iWeb video tutorials under the iWeb Help menu.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen not to supply User Guides for iWeb, because it is "so obvious".

Office 2010 mail merge with section breaks printing problem

Afternoon all,
We have an issue and I was wondering if anyelse has come across this and has a solution
Our office staff do many mail merges and once the merge is complete they then can print the whole document with no problems or select one page and do print current page. The problem occurs when trying to print a range i.e. pages 5-7. Once you click print nothing happens, no errors and nothing comes out the printer.
What I have found is that the mail merge is putting in section breaks between each page to seperate them but if I change these to page breaks in the document then I can select pages 5-7 and it prints with no problems.
So the only solution I have found so far is to do a find/replace and find all ^b (section break) and replace with ^m (page break). This is obvioulsy takes more time and is a pain if we have to do this for every mail merge.
I can't find any setting in the mail merge to tell it to use page breaks instead of sections breaks
Has anyone else come across this probem, is it a office bug ???

Replying to your posts works just fine. You can choose to reply to either of the other posts & address both in your comments just as you did. I see quite a few threads where the OP (original poster) posts a reply to each & every one who has replied. I think it makes it very difficult to find the actual answers.

I am attempting to parse a line of text with regular expressions. I am having difficulty with the line breaks.
I want to divide the following line by the first '\n' char.
For instance, I wan the output to be as follows:
found 1: one

dddHowever, I get the following with my attached code:

found 2: dddHowever, the second line break seems to be the end of the second group.
How do I get the any character '.' to read past any subsequent line breaks?

In this case, the DOTALL flag is the one you need; it allows the dot (period, full stop) to match line separator characters. MULTILINE makes the '^' and '$' anchors match the beginning and end of logical lines, instead of just the beginning and end of the input.

Pages numbering always begins at section break

Even if I chose Show In Document, it still begins as page 2 at every section. Why?
By the way I unchecked the 'Include number on the first page'

In the Inspector palette set which page number to start on. You have to have clicked on the page where you change the page number

I can not use edit and develop after release November 2013.
I am a user from Sweden and wonder if it only hit European data center?
The language has also changed from Swedish to English in the modules.
I can not access the following in Site Settings:
Admin users
Mobile support
Secure Domain redirect
Beta features
Does anyone have the same problem?

You can not insert a section break into a textbox.
You appear to have a lot of objects with wrap set, that once you take them out of the flow of text (by sending them to the background) causes the text to reflow and contract into fewer pages. Pages is almost unique in the way it forms up pages in Word Processing mode only so long as there is text on them.
I suspect you probably have hammered away at returns, spaces and tabs as well to position things, which only works to add to the mess.

PS There is quite a lot of programming in OSX that is far from "intuitive". Pages is easy at one level, when using the templates, otherwise it can be quite frustrating.

How to generate printed document with "continuous" section breaks versus "next page" section breaks?

When generating a Word or PDF document from the HTML help files a "next page" section break is used after each topic. How can I get a "continuous" section break instead?

I've been poking around a bit more. Here's the deal.
New chapters will always start on a new page and have a next or odd page break according to the Start New Chapters setting. If ticked it will be an Odd Page break, else a Next Page break.
Topics within a book will follow the Start Each Topic on a New Page setting. If ticked, each topic will be separated by a page break, not a section break. Else they will be on the same page with no breaks of any type.
Topics not within a book will be followed by a section break.
So section breaks are only created for chapters and topics not in a chapter.

Pages - page/section breaks don't work with heading 2, 3, etc

First of all, sorry for my english!
I don't know how to create page/section breaks in my epubs. The truth is that the breaks appear every time I use the "heading 1" (for example, in a book it could be "PART ONE", "PART TWO" and so on).
But when I use the "heading 2", the break dissapear, even if I put a page break or a section break.
Sometimes I have three headings and I would like to have breaks in all of them (for example: PART ONE / Book One / Chapter one), but it's impossible to do it and I don't understand why...
Could you please help me?

Thank you for explaining to me that I don't understand the problem. At least that makes two of us.
When there is an obvious bug in some software and that bug has been tracked down to an incompatibility between two programs (and at least I understand what is going on, as, I am sure, anyone else will who is familiar with recent FF developments), one (or both) of the two programs has to be modified. UPEK have modified their software and tested it. Toshiba have uploaded it but have failed to release it. That's all you need to understand. I posted the problem here in the niave hope that someone from Toshiba might be interested to know what problems their customers were having.
Model number and OS version are totally irrelevant, since the problem has been completely identified and a solution found. I am sure you know it all but a golden rule in forums is not to try to help people until you have understood what they have said.
Of course I appreciate that Tosh have to run some tests to satisfy themselves that this new version isn't going to break something else (but UPEK are puzzled). But the point is that something is seriously wrong with the current version and an update is needed now.
Frustrated? Yes! Actually, I am sick of the inefficient and intrusive bloat-ware on my Toshiba. I frequently have to reboot or wait aeons while the thing deals with a myriad of different start-up processes. I have a Tecra M5 and it is certainly not on my recommended list. Never have I been so underwhelmed by a new computer (owned since March 2006, BTW). The only good thing I have done of late is dual-booted Linux onto it.
If there is an email, let me know. As for telephone support -- get real!

Got it. I tried booting with MOD_AUTOLOAD set to yes, and it was working fine. Looks like I needed to specify some more modules in my list.

How do I get a section break/page break when the item is greyed out?

I've created an A4 document in word processing mode, with four identical A6 text boxes covering the entire page. Then I've created a second page with four more A6 text boxes so I can print a postcard on both sides of the card. Trouble is, Pages has made two extra text pages that I don't want, the first is linked to Pages 1 and 2, and the second is separate. I can't create a section break or page break because the command is greyed out, so I can't delete page 3. When I try and delete page 4, which is a stand alone page, it also deletes pages 2,3 and 4, leaving me with just page 1!
I don't have any problem with page breaks or section breaks in an ordinary A4 document with just one text box on a page, but I often want to create multiple text boxes and when I do I have always had this problem, ever since Pages was first introduced. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

Thank you, Yvan, but I've tried that. Firstly, I unchecked the headers and footers tick box in the Inspector because I want the postcards to be exactly A6 size, that is, one quarter of A4. I've tried making the lower two text boxes slightly smaller (which I don't really want to do, because I want them A6 size) but I still can't get the insertion point to appear below the text box – it stays resolutely in the next page and won't go back up to the previous page. Any further ideas? Thank you.

How to change the header and footer in the Section Breaks Next Page using OpenXML?

I have a word document file in which I added a Section Break of Next Page, now I want to change the header and footer of that page.
Scenario of example, I have a doc file which has four pages with headers and footers and added fifth page in the section break next page, I want to change the header and footer of the fifth page only. This is achievable manually by deselecting the Link to Previous
button in the Word Application but I don't know how to change it using XML?

I can't delete section breaks in page,

Hi there, this is my first time using sections in Pages. I've tried your online tutorials but I don't seem to be able to combine two sections together, because I can't work out how to delete the section breaks without deleting the document.
The dotted blue line, which I imagine I'm supposed to be fn+delete-ing deletes the substance of the page also. I'm not sure if it makes much difference but the pages I'm working on are only using pictures.
I need to get the sections right for my TOC.
I really appreciate your help. I'm loving my mac, but this bits giving me a headache!

I suspect you have a lot of pictures mixed in with paragraph returns.
When you have a combination of images with the default word wrap on, not quite filling up the width of the page they can interact in unpredictable ways. This can make them pop and disappear when the page they are on disappears from under them.
Select the images and:
+Inspector > Wrap > Object Placement > Floating+
also:
+Inspector > Wrap > uncheck Object Causes Wrap+
Since there are many ways your returns, inline graphics, wrap and section breaks can interact, if you still have problems email me the file by clicking on my blue name and I'll fix it.
