PAL source out to NTSC TV

If I have some PAL 25 fps source material recorded onto my iPod, and I have the iPod set to NTSC out, should it play okay on an NTSC TV here in the US?

All,
Well, I tried it today.
I converted Black Books (PAL 25fps, UK comedy) from a DVD (Super DVD iPod Converter) in one step to a .mp4 file, then copied it to my 5G iPod.
I set the Video to NTSC out and played three episodes out to a 72" large screen TV.
It looked very good! Minimal artifacts from the 320x240 reduction (crawly jaggies), minimal compression artifacts (halos, color bleed etc), good sound, good motion with only Very minimal 25/30 frame rate artifacts.
All-in-all: Brilliant! Well done Apple !!!

  • PAL subclip out of sync when placed on NTSC timeline?

The job: 700 adverts from PAL and NTSC from 40 U-Matics - choose 300 and make an NTSC DVD compilation.
I converted the tapes to DVCPRO50.
I created subclips for each ad on each tape.
I created a new NTSC DV timeline and placed the subclips on the timeline.
(I planned to use Nattress Standards Conversion to convert the PAL subclips to NTSC).
I noticed that the PAL clips' audio cut out early. I displayed the audio waveforms for the clip - the waveform wasn't cut off - it was in sync with the end of the clip, Final cut was playing the audio late and cutting it off to match the video.
I exported the edit (to check if there was a delay in the playback of the audio on my machine), the actual output had the audio out of sync too.
When I exported the subclip as a QuickTime movie and reimported it, placed this new PAL movie on the NTSC timeline, the cut off didn't happen.
Surely the subclip and the exported QuickTime movie should behave the same on the same timeline.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Is this a known bug in Final Cut?

How was this clip imported? If it was captured/ingested, did you make sure that the sample rate of the capture settings matched the sample rate of your audio? Normally FCE will give you a warning if they don't match, but it can't hurt to make sure.

  • Capturing a PAL source to FCP?

    Hello.
Does anybody know the process to capture a PAL source on FCP using a NTSC system (America). I do have a JVC deck that can play and recognize the PAL source, but it doesn't capture to FCP. I've tried the various presets etc. in the log and capture window to no avail. What do I have to do?
    Thanks,
    Jordan

In the FINAL CUT PRO menu, there is a selection for EASY SETUPS.
    Select it.
You will then see a list of presets. Many of them are PAL.

  • Oops... pal footage in an ntsc sequence

Just wondering is there any fix (besides checking your settings before you begin your project) for having edited a whole project in the wrong format. I have pal footage in an NTSC sequence. When I did a copy from the ntsc sequence and pasted into a pal sequence everything was not represented as it was in the original ntsc sequence which I realise is a result of in and out points changing because of the different frame rates between formats and how that translates to the timeline. Is the only option to re edit the whole project?
    cheers

Yep, had to do the render. When I right click on the clips in the sequences and select Item Properties>Timing it shows there is 1 frames difference between the in markers. eg. ntsc sequence in marker 00:01:50:06 pal sequence in marker 00:01:50:05. The pal sequence with the copied clips just doesn't seem to display or cut together as it did with the ntsc sequence. Sorry for the muddy explanation

  • Dolby parameters only editable for PAL source material?

I noticed that the only editable Dolby setting is located under the MPEG 4 Pal Source Material folder. Does that mean if I render just a sound mix using that "editable" Dolby codec it shouldn't be played with NTSC? All of the other Dolby 2.0 choices (Example: under DVD Best Quality 120 minutes) cannot be edited. You're stuck with a boiler plate setting.

You can't edit any of the settings that come with the app unless it's been applied to your asset(s) in the Batch window. You can edit any setting you've created before or after it's been applied to your source.

  • OK, the videoformat may be changed (PAL, NTSC) by plugin a specified cable, but how can  I force to have PAL-format instead of NTSC to be send to iMovie via the USB-cable?

OK, the videoformat may be changed (PAL, NTSC) by plugin a specified cable to be connected the iPhone to the TV, but how can  I force to have PAL-format instead of NTSC to be send to iMovie via the USB-cable? Al this transcoding afterwards takes a lot to much time. Is there a solution before sending the clips?

Well, thanks a lot.  iMovie '11 is similar, but not identical and unfortunately I don't seem to find any "Frame Rate Pop-Up menu" when I generate a new Project. Do not find an "Aspect Ratio Pop-Up" either. Also the help does not speak of this options.  I just have to choose a Theme and that's it. Also the "Settings" Menu for the Film does not help.
I also checked the general settings for iMovie:
So I would dare say, there is actually no possibility anymore, to set the output format. And also when I create the output file, there is nothing more than a short list of resolutions.
I do not understand why all options were taken away. I admit, I am a little disappointed.
    Best regards

  • Merging two versions; one w/PAL Audio one w/NTSC Video

Here's an oddity...for a project was given a 2 hour video file in NTSC w/really bad sound levels. When I asked for it to be given a corrected copy, I got one with PAL video, with bad picture but great sound. Trying to get a third copy (third time is the charm) but for fun trying to see if there is a way to merge the two. First thing I tried was using the PAL Audio under the NTSC video (which of course didn't work, as the audio was longer due to frame rate, I assume). Then tried to change the length of the PAL audio in ProTools, changing it's speed by a small percent so the final length matched the NTSC video (fun experiment, but the synch wasn't at all right). Even tried converting the footage via Nattress, but no such luck.
Curious if there's anything else I should try for experimental learning...

    Hi Phrisbee,
If it is set to 1.5meg than that is fine.
I say downoad as it has to match this when people have a asymetric service like most (A)DSL services are.
IF you don't know what you actually get from your ISP or want to test it there are test sites

  • Can iMOVIE HD convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD?

That was all! Can iMOVIE HD convert a PAL DVD to a NTSC DVD? That's my only question. Thanks.

    Hi
    A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to conver the PAL DVD to streaming.DV
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • MPEG Streamclip (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)

  • Making a PAL version of an NTSC DVD

    Hello all.
I have recently finish production on a short film, made a DVD with extras for the crew, and now need to send one to Australia (PAL DVD). What is the best way to transform my NTSC DVD project to PAL. Do I need extra software to do this, or simply use the PAL settings on my NTSC video and let compressor do the work? Could I change my DVD SP project file to PAL and let DVD SP work it's magic?
    Using:
    DVDSP 4
    Compressor 3
    Thanks everyone!

    Hi:
    Another one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=976262&tstart=15
And something to take in account is that "ussually" DVD players & TVs in PAL countries can play NTSC DVDs (what doesn't happen in NTSC countries where most of the equipmnets cannot read/play PAL movies).
You could check that with your contact/customer in Australia.
    Hope that helps !

  • Importing PAL clips into an NTSC project

    Hi guys,
I'm new to FCP... I'm wondering if it's possible to import a PAL clip into an NTSC project and will FCP do the render automatically and transfer it to NTSC?
If not can someone recommend the best way to convert such a clip? I've come across the JES Deinterlacer, but am wondering if there might be something better than that?
    Thanks in advance. Chaim

take a look at graeme nattress' standards converter.

  • Fixing Drop-Outs and NTSC PAL Conversion

    Hi All,
I know there is a filter / Programme out there that can remove Beta Drop-Outs from bad video fields but the name escapes me. Also I need to find an excellent Pal to NTSC conversion software, this is for a broadcast programme so it MUST be a professional quality. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Convert NTSC DV Quicktime video to PAL w/out audio

I have an NTSC video (10 min or so) that I need to convert to PAL. The NTSC program was created in Final Cut and I need to make a PAL copy of it onto DVD, but without the audio track. I'm fairly inexperienced with Final Cut Express HD v3.5.1 so if this is possible make the steps I need to follow fairly basic. Thanks.

You should not use FCE to do this. You should get Graeme Nattress Standards Conversion software, or use another high quality compression application.

  • Any successful NTSC to PAL conversions out there and how?

Hi all. I am using Compressor 2 and have yet to get a good NTSC to PAL conversion with the built in preset. I could use some suggestions.

If you are unhappy with the current results don't use the standard preset. Try one of the other frame control options that offer higher quality but with much longer processing times. Also, make certain that you have the latest Compressor updates, the last update had fixes for NTSC/PAL conversions.
Finally, you might want to try the freeware utiltiy JES Deinterlacer. JES does adaptive deinterlacing, inverse telecine, and NTSC/PAL conversion and many users seem to be happy with its results (and since it is a completely free download you can hardly go wrong).

  • PAL DV footage to NTSC DVD help wanted!

Hi there, apologies if this has been tackled elsewhere, but I couldn't locate it!
I have a finished PAL edit of around 90 minutes in FCP 4.5 that I have output to a PAL DVD via DVD SP 4/Compressor 2. Following this, the client has also asked for an identical NTSC DVD to send to the USA. Luckily I have the edit still loaded in FCP - therefore: This is the first time I have needed to do a standards conversion. Can anyone advise what the best method/workflow for creating this NTSC DVD is?
Many thanks in advance for your time, TP
    PowerMac G5, Dual 1.8 ghz, 3GB Ram, 250 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   FCP 4.5, DVD SP4, Motion, Toast 6 Titanium

You didn't understand what my last post said.
I said go from his PAL DV edit in FCP to a DV tape (DVCam preferrably). Then have the PAL DVCam tape transferred to another DVCam tape in NTSC.
PAL is better quality that NTSC so there will be some loss just because there is less resolution in NTSC than PAL, but keeping it on a DVCam tape is fine.
Then log the footage back into FCP with NTSC settings and then edit/export/author.
I said nothing about tranferring it to analog or VHS. I don't know where you got that one. He said his original footage was edited in DV.
And YES, if you take it to a "professional" dub house it will turn out better than most software conversions is what i meant. I have used Lightning Media in Hollywood for years and their stuff turns out great.
