Paragraph Style to control paragraph breaks?

Hi All,
How do you add paragraph breaks using Paragraph Styles?  I'm sure the answer is pretty obvious, but I don't have the vocabulary that comes with a layout/print background so I'm probably looking at the setting but not knowing it.
What I'd like to do is create a paragraph style that inserts an extra paragraph break (return) at the end of a paragraph so that instead of something like this:
Voluptat vitis dolorro to molupta tempos autet etum alis res int re voloriorest maio. Ulpa as debit prae vellaut ommoloratur susdamus endandit, qui sandesci corerspiet quis essequid evenis periorp oriberspidit illab in cum hit poratem porpore periam ipic to totaess imintiam quia alicid ullabo.
Erspernate nostiis dolorem re in poria ipsum volum none nus.
....the paragraphs look like this:
Voluptat vitis dolorro to molupta tempos autet etum alis res int re voloriorest maio. Ulpa as debit prae vellaut ommoloratur susdamus endandit, qui sandesci corerspiet quis essequid evenis periorp oriberspidit illab in cum hit poratem porpore periam ipic to totaess imintiam quia alicid ullabo.
Erspernate nostiis dolorem re in poria ipsum volum none nus.
Thanks!

What you want is to have the space before and/or the space after set to add that space.
The amounts I use depend on the baseline grid (if used) so that the amounts of space before/after add up to the baseline grid amount.

  • In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph?

    In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph.
    I need to make a table of contents for my Mater's Thesis and want to use the automatic table of contents feature.  I want the first sentence of a paragraph to have a different paragraph setting than the rest of the paragraph.  Is this possible?
    Thanks!

    Nice of you to be doing this for your Mother's Thesis.
    There are several issues here:
    1. A Paragraph Style is what it says, the style for the paragraph
    2. You can format text within a paragraph by applying a Character Style
    3. Pages 5.5.1 lets you apply formatting to overall text for the T.O.C. but not parts of it and you can not retain that formatting as a Paragraph style
    So in answer to your question, no.
    You will need to create the T.O.C. manually and unfortunately as Pages 5.5.1 can't create bookmarks (just one of over 100 missing features) you will be unable to link the T.O.C. to the referred pages in the list.

  • How to change the paragraph style of every paragraph that only contains an anchored object?

    Hi,
    I have a document in word that needs to be converted into indesign. The document containts instructions, each step followed by an image.
    I've managed to import the document into Indesign, and applied a paragraph style with numbering to everything (text an image).
    Now, how to change the the paragraph style of every paragraph that only contains a image? I need to get rid of the numbering.
    Thanks in advance.

    Create two Paragraph Styles and name them Image and Non-Image. Apply the paragraph styles manually to the text containing image and not containing images.

  • Most efficient way to apply Paragraph Style A to Paragraph style B?

    I'm looking for the most efficient way to all
    all aspects of an existing named paragraph style "A" to another named paragraph style "B". I'd especially like to find a keyboard-only way to do this.
    To my surprise,
    Copy Special >
    Paste doesn't seem to copy tab settings...(?) This leads me to suppose that other aspects of the source p'style may not be crossing the Great Paste Divide.
    Over the years I've used a variety of more or less clumsy multi-step, multi-tool "tricks" (including third-party plug-ins) to apply one named paragraph style to another, but knowing FrameMaker as I do I suspect there may be a truly efficient way to do what I want.
    Is there?
    Cheers & thanks,
    Riley

    Arnis:
    8.0p277.
    The Font family and style got Pasted -- that was immediately apparent. And based on all I know about F'Maker, I would've thought the tabs would go over.
    But when I opened the target p'style the Tabs area was completely blank.
    I'm not sure if anything else wasn't making it 'cross the Paste Divide: Once the Tabs weren't Pasted, I fell back to a different, brute-force strategy simply to get around the problem and return to work...
    Moreover, since the structured templates I inherited for this project are full of idiosyncrasies, I'll just file this one away under "The Templates Did It" and hope for better luck the next time I try the Copy Special thing...
    Cheers & thanks for your help,

  • Is there any Page function equivalent to Word's brush icon that can paste paragraph style to independent paragraphs multiple times in a Page document?

    In Page Manual, I did find an instruction that allows us to do something similar, but it is so tedious having to go back and forth between dropdown commands.
    I want something simple like Microsoft Word's paint brush icon that simply let me copy the paragraph style (size of font, character style, spacing etc) and then just paste the style to other paragraphs independently - separated by subtitles with different font size and styles that I want to keep.
    I am using iMac with the latest Mountain Lion and Page 09 now.

    Once you have a style set up it is only a single action to apply it to any text.
    Personally, I never got "the hang" of using that paint brush in Word. Give me copy & paste style any day, which is what I used in AppleWorks. With styles in Pages it's even easier.

  • Multiple paragraph styles in one line

    I'm creating a training manual and I am having trouble with paragraph styles. Here's an example of what I am trying to do:
    "The Dog walks up the hill"
    In the above example, I have created a style for the bolded text and connected it my table of contents. The idea is when I create and update the TOC, "The Dog" will be the entry with the remaining text omitted from the TOC. The issue I am having is because the text is on one line, I cannot have multiple styles. I've tried writing just "The Dog" and then either changing the style or deleting the paragraph break to connect the text below to the main line. Once I erase the paragraph break and the text is on one line, only ONE style is maintained. Now, I can modify the character style; however, because the paragraph style is still the one connected to the TOC, the entire paragraph appears in the TOC.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere to no avail.
    Thank you very much for your support.

    It depends on the breed of dog.
    Is the paragraph always a single line?
    Is this dog the leader of the pack? IE, does the phrase you want to keep always begin the paragraph? If so, then you can separate the dog from the pack in the TOC. One way is to surround the pack with a unique character or marker in the main text, like End Nested Style Here, - one after dog, and another after hill, and create a paragraph style for the doggie paragraph to use in the TOC. This paragraph should contain a nested character style that applies microscopic text properties, like paper character color, font .1pt, and horizontal scale .1%. The TOC entries should use nested paragraph styles; the source paragraphs need you to insert the End Nested Style Here markers. The nested style definition in the TOC paragraph styles should apply no character style through the first end nested style marker, then apply microscopic through the next end nested style marker. This will shrink the walks...hill text to an invisible speck, so small that it shouldn't interfere with tab leaders and page-references.
    Another approach is to use a single-row table for the heading, with the dog pent nicely in the left cell, and the pack in the right cell. Each cell contains a paragraph, so only extract the dog to the TOC.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign hide part of paragraph in toc knowhowpro," "InDesign suppress part of paragraph in contents knowhowpro," "InDesign two paragraph styles on one line," and similar phrases without quotes for some good discussions and a variety of approaches that include layers, anchored frames, and conditional text.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign conditional text," and "InDesign nested paragraph styles," without quotes for details.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3206266 has a long discussion that may shed some additional light.

  • How to remove a paragraph style?

  • Drop Shadow possible within a paragraph style?

    I have a table and on a certain row I have a style that requires a dropdown. I have made a paragraph style that has everything perfect but I can't find the drop shadow option there. Is it possible to include drop shadow effects as a style?

    I've found this frustrating too.
    The way I get around it is as follows:
    1: Create a Text Frame and type the text to be shadowed.
    2: Select the Text Frame and choose Window > Effects.
    3: Expand the Object list and select just the text in the list.
    4: Click the fx dropdown and apply any effects you want to associate with the text.
    5: Feel free to save this as an Object Style to use again.
    Now the the part that will have old-school QuarkXpressers squirming...
    6: Select the whole text frame, choose Edit > Cut.
    7: ... and paste it into another text frame as an Anchored Object.
    8: You can then create a Paragraph Style to control the position/placement of the Anchored object.
    9: ... and even add some Text Wrap and offset to your Object Style.
    I know it is a filthy workaround, but it is the only way I can find to achieve the required result.
    Please, Adobe, can we have effect styles that can be applied as part of Paragraph Styles. I mean, there's a precedent : Character styles as part of Paragraph Styles, Table Styles containing Cell Styles that contain Paragraph Styles that could ostensibly contain Nested Styles.....

  • How do I access *load paragraph styles* from the styles pallet menu?

    Adobe help informs me that I can bring styles from other documents into an existing document by doing this:
    "To copy paragraph styles from one publication to another choose Load Paragraph Styles from the Paragraph Styles panel menu."
    I do not see any menu in the paragraph style menu. I am in CS5. What am I missing?

    I'm sorry, I found it. I had to go back to my G4 and the CS version to see what to do. I did not recognize the small feature on the window yielding the menu.

  • A paragraph style that applies to all other paragraph styles?

    Hi,
    how does one add a paragraph style that applies to all other paragraph styles?
    I tried applying my desired master styles to [Basic paragraph] and then based all other paragraph styles on [Basic paragraph], with some styles relating to it indirectly, e.g. Heading 1 is based on [Basic paragraph] but Heading 2 is based on Heading 1 and so on.
    That did not work as well as I'd expected though.
    Is there anything else I can do?
    Much obliged!

    A rule of thumb is to leave basic paragraph alone. Otherwise you may mess up other styles based on it.
    Just set up your new style - which may default to based on basic paragraph - and format it as you wish. Then base other styles on this.

  • [win][js][cs4]find/change paragraph styles without losing local overrides

    Hi guys i need a little help here.
    I created a javascript which will find and replace doc file paragraph styles with indesign paragraph styles. everything works fine but the problem is that when it applies the paragraph styles it loses all local overrides. i tried:
    changetext(false);
    but its not working is there some kind of conditional parameter that i can put in the changetext() function so that it wont clear local overrides?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Kasyan. You're always there to save my day. Thank you very much...
    I slightly modify the script to go through all my paragraph styles that need to be replaced coz there are hundreds of them. Im not sure though if this is the best or is there any faster way to do this:
    replace("T1", "Text", "T1");
    replace("T", "Text", "T");
    replace("1", "Heads", "1");
    replace("2", "Heads", "2");
    function replace(input, folder, output) {
        var foundItem;
        var doc = app.activeDocument;
        app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.NOTHING;
        app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = ".+";
        app.findGrepPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = input;
        var foundItems = doc.findGrep();
        for (var i = 0; i < foundItems.length; i++) {
            foundItem = foundItems[i];
            foundItem.applyParagraphStyle(doc.paragraphStyleGroups.item(folder).paragraphStyles.item( output), false);

  • IDCS3 Getting the "next paragraph style" to work

    Hi there Adobe Forum.
    If you make a paragraph style there is an option that allows you to choose which paragraph style will follow the current one. But I can't seem to get it to work. If I just select one paragraph in my document and make it have a paragraph style that has got a "next style" option in it, the next paragraph does not change.
    I tried to select all the paragraph and do the same thing, but then they all just got that paragraph style, no next.
    How do you do to make this work? It would be really smart to just select the first paragraph of a text and then choose "ingress paragraph style", which is followed by "first paragraph", which is followed by "normal text". And then be done with it.
    Any clues?

    Select them all then in right click the first paragraph style in the
    paragraph styles panel. Select apply style and next style.
