Parallels or a PC for Games?

I have an iMac from 2011 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 / 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3:
I thought that instead of buying a new windows machine that it might be more prudent to get parallels with Win7 or something in order to play the game Wolfenstein from 2009, but I'm not sure if my graphics car will be good enough?
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=64&game=Wolfenstein
I would also like to play the one just released as well, but am not sure about the 32/64 bit thing. Can the Wolfenstein from 2009 run on Win in 64 bit mode, can I even have Windows in 32 bit on Mavericks, which is 64bit?
I am also unsure if my graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB) will work with the new wolfenstein?
Alternatively would it not just be less hassle to get an all-in-one MSI PC machine to play them?
Thanks

Hi Hamper,
You're right, before buying a PC let's try with your iMac: you can use actually Parallels with both Win7 32 bits and Win7 64 bits without problems (I use currently Parallels with OSX 64 bits and Win7 32 bits).
The only difference you will see with using 64bits is that your Win7 will not be limited with 4GB RAM use (the 32 bits version will). Note: think about configuring Parallels to put at least 8GB memory for Win7 to run.
So the best way for you is to get one license from Win7 (32/64 bits, you'll get 2 DVDs in the box), install these two OS on Parallels and see how Wolfenstein 2009 is running. Try the Win7 32 bits first, since this game is likely to be design for 32 bits OS, so it should run better on it. Wolfenstein 2009 will be able to run also on a 64 bits environment, but with lower perfs due to compatibility mode needed to run.
If your framerate is not good enough, you can try to dual boot your iMac with Win7 32 bits or 64 bits (using Bootcamp is nice and easy to implement - Note : for Win 7 32 bits dual boot use Bootcamp v4, for Win 7 64 bits use Bootcamp v5. It avoids the OS virtualization and consequently brings more performance.
Now for newest games it is quite difficult to say if your graphic card will work fine. 512MB is quite light for new games as they recommend at least 1GB Graphic Card. If you focus on Mac Games version, that should be fine, since they are normally optimized for it. For PC Games with heavy needs (FPS / RTS / and everything dealing with anti-aliasing, etc), well, your Graphic card won't enable you to play in "Ultra" settings.
One thing to have in mind, while playing heavy 3D games, keep an eye on the temperature of your components, since the thermal dissipation is the key: meaning that your workstation components will go to high temperature and if the air flow is not enough your performance will decrease to a suitable operating heat level. This is typically the case of laptops and all-in-one workstations, where the output air flow is not enough to evacuate the heat by playing new 3D games, so your framerate drops to the ground. You have pretty nice free widgets for OSX to monitor your components heat level.
And finally if your iMac Graphic Card is not powerful enough to play recent games my advice comes with 2 options:
Option 1: do not play current 3D games;
Option 2: build a Minitower PC config with good fan system, for a cost of 600 to 700$.  You should focus on Graphic Card for a budget of around 150$ (Radeon or nVIDIA chips), it should run all new Games in Good Quality. Before buying a PC Graphic Card, search on internet its benchmarks on games: the memory capacity is sometimes not a good indicator i.e. nVIDIA GT (bad perf) vs GTX (good perf) versions
And by the way, nice iMac you have, enjoy!

  • Any way to get refunded for games that looked good in adverts but turned out to be entirely rubbish?

Ripped off? I got over 80 hours from Bloodborne, THE standout game for me this gen.

30 days is too long for a refund. As it was mentioned earlier, it would be the death of
small devs who are doing it proper and will be run down by something subjective.
One middle ground solution is to wait for reviews and word of mouth (friends or news gaming sites etc.)
before you buy any games. Marketers aren't the most honest group so stop listening/reading into them
already. Too many idiots with short-term money keep falling for things marketers come up with and end
up complaining everywhere. Do your own research and stop being lazy.
-Stop pre-ordering (Producers and publishers aren't testing their products enough, and have shifted their focus on pleasing their board members too much. These board members don't know the ins-and-outs of game development so they should also be called out in comments and conversations too.)
-More developers should go back to creating demos for games, and the Gaming platforms (Sony, Microsoft, Steam) could accomodate developers in terms of costs for demos.
Patience is a virtue and it would be nice if game development (and all the groups involved) went back to the good
old days of properly tested games before being released.

In view of the fact that there are numerous applications that run properly while creating a lot of internal heat in a MBP indicates that it does not follow that heat is an inhibiting factor (within designed parameters).  Thus my comment is certainly not opion, rather fact.  You certainly are entitled to your reply but a third party reader should be be apprised of what the facts are.

Regarding the old iMac.  Just delete your USER NAME from the Control Panel.  Go into System Preferences - then User/Groups and delete your account from there.
Just a bit of advice though before you do all this, go and buy yourself a remote Hard Drive, they're really good value today and copy off all of your sacred files from your old computer onto the new drive.  You could also do the same via the Backup.app
It's well worth doing....    You can easily delay the switch over for a few days and you'll then have a backup disc that you'll start to use again and again.

  • 24" iMac any good for games (compared to Mac Pro)

    Hi,
I'm on my second Mac Pro and after no end of trouble so i'm hoping to exchange it for a 24" imac but i was wondering if it's any good for games?
I would probably configure it with the 7600gt and maybe the 2.33ghz proccessor.
My mac pro with the x1900xt ran Quake 4 and Doom3 etc at full stettings really well but i've just had to much trouble with it!

The iMac would be fine for games for now, but you are stuck with the configuration that you purchase as there is no way (for now) to upgrade the video card.
There is a thought that some OEMs might make an upgrade card, but as of now there are none.
The big advantage of the Mac Pro is that it has the PCI-express video card that you can remove the stock card from and add a newer, better card.

I looked at KB25882 and my settings are good, so that didn't help.
I had this problem over a year ago, and someone at RIM found a bit set that shouldn't have been set and fixed it (that is my terminology for what happened).
I am really looking for a way to contact RIM directly.  I hate going through the mill with my carrier to get it escalated to RIM for resolution......  <sigh>
    Hi mgpainter
Most easiest way to Contact RIM is through your Carrier but as you don't prefer that than there is another way of support called Incident Based Support but just want to inform you that its not free.If you want have a try  BlackBerry Incident Based Support .

  • 5.1 for games from X-Fi Music through home recei

using the digital coax doesn't give me true 5. for games (not dvds) when i go through my receiver to speakers.
do i have to somehow connect 6 analog cables to my receiver? if so, what device do i need to buy so i can run those cables from the soundcard (my receiver has MultiCh analog inputs)?
or is there higher end X-Fi that allows 5. for games via digital?Message Edited by xfiheck on 03-08-20070:58 PM

No SB card can encode DD/DTS on the fly, you need 3x miniplug-to-RCA cables for 5. or the SB HT cable for 7.

The page has some diagrams that show how to connect to the analog inputs on the receiver.

How can I choose another name for Game Center ? (not a nick)

    Hi XxCarrisxX,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are asking. If you are talking about changing to or using a different Apple ID in Game Center, you may find the following article helpful:
Sign in to your Game Center account using your Apple ID. If you don't have an Apple ID or another Apple account, tap or click Create New Account to create an account to use with Game Center.
You can change the account you are signed into by:
iOS: Tap Settings > Game Center.
OS X: Click the Me tab in the Game Center app and click on your Account.
    Apple Support: Using Game Center

However, make sure you are aware of the following:
Note: Please note each Apple ID has its own associated scores, achievements, and friends.
Apple IDs are also tied to your other Apple services, and therefore should not be created lightly.
    Regards,

If deleting then reinstalling the apps doesn't work, then contact the app developer for support.
It sounds, though, like your internet connection is simply very slow.
Try making a backup, then restoring the iPhone as new, and testing again.

  • 7300GT any good for games over imac X1600XT?

    Hi,
I have been waiting for the mac pro and have been using a standard 17" intel imac in the meantime. I have found it great for games like Quake 4, Doom 3 and Call of Duty 2 etc but now that the mac pros are out i intend to buy one. The thing i'd like to know is how will the 2ghz version with the standard 7300gt video card stack up aginst the imac with the standard x1600xt? The frame rates don't look that hot on apples web site but i just need it to play at least as good as the imac. I don't have the cash for any of the upgrade cards.
    Ant thoughts welcome!

I would exactly say that the 7300GT is a slouch. Far from it. What you have to remember is that put up against cards like the ATI X1900 it looks shameful. The 7300GT is a good, cheap, middle performing display card.
Michael Schumacher's F1 Ferarri is a quick little beast. Thing is, put it up against Captain Kirk's Enterprise and it's shamefully slow.

  • Is iMac 5K good for games !?

Hello, I want to ask you  is the new iMac good for video games. By video games I mean games with very good graphics like Far Cry 4, GTA 5, CoD AW, Dying Light and other like them   or I should get a cheeper gaming pc? Please, answer me if you can.

The only way to play high games with high response times on an IMac is to get an IMac with high end specs and that'll make it a very expensive gaming machine.
You need to check the sites for the games you play for the nominal (average) hardware specs as well as the higher end hardware specs.
None of the 21 inch screen IMacs will hack it for high end gaming as their GPUs top out at 1 GB VRAM and the i7 CPUs are NOT the fastest available.
The only 5K retina iMac is the 27 inch screen model that starts at $2500 U.S.D. and the 27 inch screen models are the only models to get all of the bells and whistles needed like maybe a top of the line i7 CPU(for games the i7 CPU is really needed over the more common i5 CPUs), top of the line GPU (or  see if you can get away with the base (2 GB VRAM GPUs) and faster 7200 RPM hard drives (the 21 inch screen iMacs only come now with laptop standard 5400 RPM hard drives, now) or faster/larger Fusion or SSD/Flash based drives.
You'll be close to the $3000 mark or more if you go with both the fastest CPU (4.0 Ghz) AND the 4 GB VRAM GPU.
If you are trying to compare an iMac gaming machine to a cheap PC for gaming, it sounds as if to me you do not have the budget for a $2500 IMac???
Even the non-retina 27 inch iMacs will set you back, at least $2000 U.S.D. for the higher spec'd. model.
If you are really considering the cheap PC route (which won't be as cheap as you think for a comparable PC with good gaming hardware specs), maybe just stick to your PC for gaming.
It seems to me that the budget is not there or realistic for a IMac with the specs you are going to need.
    Good Luck!
