Paranoid - Small bump during file transfer

I am currently transferring data from my MacBook Pro (hard disk drive) to my MacBook Air. I very slightly nudged my desk by accident causing my MacBook Pro to vibrate slightly.
The transfer did not stop. Everything seems to be going well.
So, here is my question. If I the sudden motion sensor had activated during this process, would the process pause, or would such an event cause damage to the transferred data?
I assume the data is verified while being copied.
I know, paranoia... I'm in the middle of a 4-hour process, and I dont want to have to start again.
Thank U

Mobile hard drives are actually fairly robust. You can generally carry them around while they are in use. It takes a pretty significant bump to cause any problem (in systems without a Sudden Motion Sensor). If the Sudden Motion Sensor does activate, the system is smart enough to know the drive was paused and will resume writing from where it left off.

  • Zen goes blank during file transfer

i own a Zen 32GB flash player, and recently it has been going blank and forcing me to reset when i try to transfer files using the mediasource organizer. it connects fine, is recognized, and i can ever browse it, but when i try to transfer files the player goes from a "docked" screen to a blank one, the organizer reports an error, and i have to reset the player. this occurs with different files, so the cause isn't a faulty file. i am running the most recent version of MSO, and the latest drivers and firmware. OS is XP?sp2.
recovery mode cleanup also didn't help, and since the transfer rate is very slow i rather avoid formatting if i can.
has anyone experienced the same problem? any help would be appreciated.

'Re: Zen goes blank during file transfer. I have also experienced this same problem. I am currently using Windows 7 RC with Windows Media Player 2, but it was previously happening when running Windows XP SP3 with WMP.
I have actually had my player replaced already since I had this same problem on my previous player. That started occurring after having had the player for around 4 months. On first occurring a reset and clean up from the recovery mode was enough to get it going again, at least for a week or so. It then started occurring more frequently and I was forced to format the device. Again this seemed to fix the problem initially, but after just a few days it got to the point where even that wouldn't get it working again, at which point I sent it back and received a new device.
I've now had my replacement device for only a few weeks and it's started to happen again. I haven't yet resorted to a format, but a cleanup isn't working.
From my observation it seems to be in some way related to general power issues with the device. When the problem occurs the screen goes off and the player isn't recognised by the PC, but the power light on the side of the device remains lit orange, so it hasn't actually turned off. I've also had ongoing problems, on both devices, where I often can't turn the player back on after either I've turned it off or it's gone through the auto power down after leaving it on pause. In that case I also have to reset the device via the side button, and then wait a few minutes for the library to rebuild.
I too would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to provide some help with this problem, because my initial workarounds as described only work for a short period of time and I would prefer not to have to send it back a second time.

  • TC hangs during files transfer

    Hello,
Brand new Time Capsule 2 TB. Everything works until I transfered files from my iMac to the TC. The TC hangs (during the file transfer) and needs to be reboot - not very easy, I tried maybe 20 times and then it worked - then it needs to be reconfigured.
I tried once again, transfering files (other files) from the Mac and the TC hangs again.
Strange, because I used my first TC (died last week, 18 months after I bought it) in the same way and I did transfer (in many months) lots of TB (maybe 5 to 10 GB a day) to the internal disk of the TC and to 3 externals drives (connected to the TC).
Is anyone suffering the same probleme?
Thanks for your time and best regards from sunny Switzerland

I have exactly the same problem on both my MBA & iMac yet my Mac Mini works like a dream
Just purchased the 2TB TC & 27inch iMac
Have ensured all are using the new Airport Utility version that came with the TC
MBA running 10.6.1 hangs between 1.6 & 2.2 MB of transfer.
iMac running 10.6.2 hangs after 1.6 MB transfer.
Mac Mini running 10.6 completes albeit slower than I would like however only using g rather than n
Both MBA & iMac using n - after they hang I get a server connections interrupted error which you can choose ignore or disconnect all
Internet / Browsing works perfectly even when the file has hung and I have chosen disconnect all
A quick refresh of the Airport off and on brings back the TC to be able to expand the file structure again and I can then try again.
Called Apple support today - they put me on hold twice for up to 5 mins each time as need to check with advanced support, mobile dropped out and they didn't ring back like they promised - will try again tomorrow.
If I find a solution be sure to let you know.
Biggest concern from reading all these forums is once I get a stable file transfer I will have to deal with terribly slow speeds over wifi.
Not to mention the incredibly slow speeds when a usb flash is plugged directly in the back of the TC

  • Security During File transfer

    hi,
i have done a file transfer program in Java which transfers a file from one PC to another.
i want tht my file (any text document ) should get transfered in secured manner. Like there should be cryptography and authentication both involved.
how should i go about it ?

My First preference would be to use SecuredSocket using Certificate.
If you can not use Secured Socket, You can use a private-key and public key to encrypt/decrypt the data.
I am assuming that you are sending file(s) from a local server to a remote server.
You shoud create Key Pair Generator to generate public/private key and store them in a secured files in your remote server.
Copy the public key to the local server using a secured way. (copy it using a ssh/scp).
Then, you can encrypt your file content using the public key and send it to the remote server. The remote server should be able to decrypt using the private key and Only the remote server w/ private key will be able to decrypt and get the original content.
Again, this is just one way to do it. If this needs to be a production code, I would suggest that you get a Certificate from a Certificate Authority such as VeriSign.
If you need some help, drop me an email ([email protected])

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Fan/Heat During File Transfer

    Hey guys,
I just had my MacBook Pro Retina in for repair because of an 4HDD/11/400000000: Sata (0,0) error and they replaced the SSD. I have a 2.7/16/768 configuration. One of the main issues I noticed was periodically slow file transfers, load times and boots hanging etc. and a secondary reason was a high-pitched buzzing with heavy disk usage.
My question now is... when I'm doing something as simple as a large file transfer, or installing some apps etc. the MacBook really heats up and the fans really start spinning sometimes. I've never known SSD access to heat up a computer so much. Is this normal behaviour that everyone else is experiencing with their systems? To clarify: this happens when not doing anything else with the machine other than copying files around, also when copying files to/from my external drive which is connected through FireWire on the back of my 27" Thunderbolt display which is then of course connected to the MacBook via the Thunderbolt port.
Expected behaviour? Seems odd to me, but this is my first MacBook so don't know if that's the 'norm' or not.

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • Hanging network connection during file transfer

    Hi,
Often, when I try to copy large files (1+ GB) through the network from my PowerMac G5 to my Mac Mini (PPC) the file transfer hangs after a short time.
The network is wired. G5 and network hub are Gigabit, the Mac Mini is Megabit.
When hanging I have to force quit the Finder and reboot the G5. I don't have to reboot the Mac Mini.
Any ideas why these transfers keep hanging?
    Thanks!
    Maarten

It depends how quick the laptop can write the data to disk/storage too.

  • DiskWarrior crashes during file transfer/backup..

Guys, im able to get thru the Original and Preview pane of DW...there was a pop out that i need to backup my files as fast as i can because my original directory is damaged..so i backup/transfer all my files in Preview to my external hd...and after i copy 10GB files out of my 330GB it shows some errors the progress window dissapear out of nowhere..wth..i dont know what to do next and i tried thrice and it crashes again and again. pleaseae
    Need your inputs..Thanks!!

Ok i finally found out that its advisable to copy  every folder one a time rather than copying all then paste to your external hd...now ive done all the file transfer i still can see the REPLACE button is still greyed out..is there any chance that i can continue the rebuild/replace of my directory then install ML? or ny hd needs a replacement?

  • Leopard decides to go to sleep during file transfer ***!

For some reason Leopard doesn't think that a file transfer is something that should be obeyed before it goes to sleep. I had a 7 hour network file transfer going on and leopard just went to sleep. Makes me want to break something.

Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and select the Sleep tab. Drag the "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:" to "Never".
Also ensure that the "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible" is unchecked.

  • Setup Assistant fails during file transfer and loops back to the beginnig

I have a PPC G5 running 10.4.11 and just bought an Intel-based MacBook Pro. (I haven’t gotten it to fully start up yet, so I’m not sure about the OS.)
I've tried to use the Setup Assistant to migrate my files and applications from my desktop to the laptop, but when I get to the Transfer Files option, the Users, Applications Folder, and Files and Folders options never finish calculating. Everytime I hit Transfer, a black-and-white wheel appears for less than a second then disappears, and Setup Assistant loops back to the beginning, where I get the multilingual welcome messages and bad music. Or, if I do nothing and wait for the Transfer Files step to calculate, Setup Assistant still just loops back to the beginning.
I’ve tried the options for transferring from another Mac and from another volume. I’ve tried copying from the G5 in Target Disk Mode and tried copying from a cloned firewire hard drive. I’ve tried using the firewire 400 and 800 ports, different cables. I’ve run DiskWarrior on the G5 and the cloned disc to make sure no disc errors hung up the process. I tried booting into Safe Mode and following that protocol, though it seemed to address a different issue than the one I’m experiencing.
Any ideas about what I can do? I’d rather do this in Setup Assistant than Migration Assistant, and I really don’t relish the idea of reinstalling all the software I have on the G5 onto the MacBook Pro. (Logic, for example, takes forever to install.)
    Let me know!

Even if it's a demo, it's unlikely it's got 10.5 on it. Maybe 10.6. I've used the 10.6 SA from Leopard, which ran perfectly with no problems. As for MA, here's one way to go about it, if you can't finish with SA. (Thanks to MonkeyBoy at XYMer's)
If you choose to use the migration assistant after installing SL to migrate settings over from Tiger, it'll copy over all your data intact from Tiger, as well as use the same account names & passwords.
What I typically do is choose a dummy name during the installation, then use MA to import the "real" accounts from the old install. After I'm satisfied MA moved over the accounts properly (I've logged into them and used them for a few hours/days and generally feel satisfied with the lack of crashes and similarly "odd" events) then I delete the dummy account.

  • No Progress Bar during file transfer

after installing yosemite recently, when i move a file to and from an external drive, i do not get the transfer bar that shows the progress of the move. any help fixing this? I have tried deleting the "com.apple.finder.plist" from library (& restarted) and repairing permissions. when i go to a different (clean) user account, i can get the progress bar when i move files.

  • MuVo2FM (5G) - Never pull the UCB cable out during File transfer

It will create a firmware error. I phoned up the technical support, they verified it. It is a DESIGN BUG in the player.
Creative is so eager to capture a slice of Disk Based MP3 market that they push out inmature products into the market. If you try to find the firmware to download, forget about it. The MuVo2FM (5G) firmware, cannot be found on the web, because they do not have one.
I phoned up the technical support, they send me a firmware which does not work.
The computer cannot even recognise the mp2 player. I think now, the best thing is to throw the player into the rubbish bin.

    Norbert,
Pulling out the player during transfer is a bad idea with *ANY* player. In any case, it would most likely corrupt the files that are transferring over, which could cause problems.

  • Will computer go to sleep during file transfer?

hey everyone...i was recently tranferring about 60 gigs of files onto my recently formatted mac.
i left it going as i slept.
when i woke up and checked it...i had to wake up the computer to see if the transfer finished.
it was finished...but what i wanted to know is:
*would the computer have gone to sleep in the middle of the transfer or does it stay awake?*
i don't want the transfer to have been incomplete ya know?
    please let me know
    thank you so much

On your 1st question, not certain as none of my Macs ever sleep, but I think it depends on how the transfer is happening and the exact HW involved.
do they get transferred in alphabetical order??
I'm fairly certain it gets transfered by "no sort", meaning the 1st one it comes to on the HD, then next, etc.

  • Errors during file transfer on WebDav server

(this is a repost from a different category)
I having much difficulty transferring files to and from our new WebDav server when using Finder's Connect to Server. I am able to connect and authenticate just fine. Although, when dragging and dropping to a mounted drive, I receive the following errors, then subsequently dropped from the sever.
...Unexpected Error Occurred - Error code 1407
...cannot comple the operation because some data in "" could not be read or written - Error code 36
...Unexpected Error Occurred - Error code 1407
This seems to be an issue affecting all 10.5 users in our university. PC's and 10.4 do not seem to be having this issue. When using CyberDuck and Goliath, I cannot login to the server whatsoever.
    Any thoughts?

    Error:0x80070002
It is really difficult "reading between the lines" to understand that one but I imagine it would be a lot easier having a ProcMon trace which showed exactly which file was "not found" (and whether it was the same one or a different one each time).

  • Lost editing history (Metadata?) during file transfer

I had a recent HD failure - luckily everything was backed up, but in transferring backed up data to new disk array I have somehow lost all my editing history. After transferring the files to the new disk, I opened the most recent catalog that was backed up and whilst I can access all the files, none of the old metadata is present.
I have been "fiddling" for a while trying to fix this, I suspect I have made it all worse but I have tried to synchronize folders in Library but to no avail.
Does anyone have a potential solution?
If it helps, I have about 32000+ photo files occupying about 640 GB, MAC OS Snow Leopard.
    thanks in advance

If you have synchronised meta data then you will have over written any meta data in the original catalog. If you wrote out your metat data to file then this shouldn't be a problem but will be if you didn't. You may want to try opening another older back up.

  • IPhoto crashed during file transfer. Cannot recover photos by rebuilding the library and there is library size discrepancies.

    Hi,
I am using an iPhone 4S and running iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (204) on OS X (version 10.9.2).
I was transferring photos from my iPhone to iPhotos with the option of deleting the originals on the phone after transfer. IPhoto crashed at some point and I had to "Force quit" the application.
Now, 3/4 th of all my pics is deleted on my iPhone and they are not in iPhoto either! I tried repairing and rebuilding the library as suggested elsewhere on this forum but nothing has worked.
The library size is currently 11.6 GB but the rebuilt library is 5.6 GB.  I think the library was around 5 GB as well before transfer. I also tried using the "iPhoto library  manager" to rebuild the library. There is no difference between the pictures in the rebuilt library and the default library, but again the new, rebuilt one is 11.6 GB and the library it uses for rebuilding 5.6 GB! So, I think the pictures are there somewhere but I am not recovering it.
Any suggestions as to how to recover deleted photos from my iPhone or to restore the iPhoto library would be muc appreciated.
    Many thanks,
P.S. I do not have a recent iTunes or iCloud backup.

If you sync photos between the Mac and other devices via iTunes there will be an cache folder created that will grow over time.  That's what the new library doesn't include and, in part, is the reason for the size discrepance.
iPhoto 8.1.2 is only marginally compatilbe with Mavericks and, as Linc suggested, should be upgraded to iPhoto 9.5.1 to be completely compatible.
