Parental Controls - Internet Access Stopped!

My wife has a white MacBook running Leopard 10.5.8.  It has worked fine for two years.  Nothing was changed.  She could not change anythign due to being logged into a managed account.
It could always access the internet over our home (or any available) WiFi perfectly.  All of a sudden, yesterday afternoon, her managed account with "Parental Controls" enabled cannot access any internet.  Safari mentions that it cannot access the server.  When checking the network setting all seems fine, it can access the WiFi router.
The administrator account can access the internet over WiFi just fine.
I created another account called Test.  In standard mode it can access the internet over WiFi just fine, but when i turn on "Parental Controls" Safari, or any other internet related program cannot access the internet.  This includes the software update in the Finder.
What's going on?  i have found similar issues on the Apple Support Communities going back unanswered to 2007!

Beach Dude,
I have the same problem, and have had on virtually every operating system since Parental Controls was introduced.
I have multiple kids with individual accounts. THe perplexing thing is that if I enable parental controls on my daughter's account,  it works fine. I can set time limits, etc... and it works! But if I so much as turn on parental controls in my youngest son's account, every web browser is unable to connect to the internet at all from his account.
BUGGY software. And apple knows it is buggy, but it isn't core system stuff so they ignore the problem.  I even tried setting up a new account for him and moving his old files over and resetting permissions. Still the same problem.
I've searched high and low for a solution and found none. I have found a limited number of users with the same complaint...and absolute silence from apple....
There is nothing on these boards that has worked, and I've tried several different solutions.  Most responses are the useless kind, "change the setting in parental controls" kind of sophomoric advice from people who just assume what the problem is instead of reading our description of it.
Anyway, I haven't found a good alternate software solution for limiting the time and hours for children's accounts; but I did find an excellent tool for managing internet content access. It is called opendns and it is free and it works!  Do a google search for "opennds" if your primary concern is managing access to web content.  If you come up with a good solution for fixing parental controls so that it doesn't just cut off web access, please let me know here - or if you find an alternate software solution that allows an administrator to set time limits for standard accounts, I would like to know that too.

  • EA6500 Parental Control or Access Restrictions question

I have been looking into this router, I woujld like to know if I can enable Parental controls or access restrictions to block a MAC or IP address; from 03:00 AM - 06:00 AM ?
Instead of Midnight to 6:00 am.
My E4200 works just fine, Just would like to know if the EA6500 Can do that ?
    Thanks

Yes, you can block a device on the network from accessing the internet from 3 AM to 6 AM.
Screen snippet I just took from my EA6500:
As for blocking it by IP address or MAC Address directly, no you can't, you have to select it from the device list, but from what I've seen, you have to do that on the E4200 as well, so that's nothing different.
There have been people expierencing issues with their device lists on the EA6500, but I've rarely had any since a few fimeware updates ago, and usually refreshing the page or clicking the in-page refresh button, fixes those when they do happen to occur. (In my case.)
And in response the the second post, although it's only apart of the wireless and unrelated to parental controls, the EA6500 does have MAC Filtering:

Do you think this product is possible?

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • E4200 Firmware 1.0.03 Parental Controls/ Intenet Access Policies not kicking in.

I have configured my e4200 to block traffic at certian times uses both the Parental Controls and the Intenet Access Polices.  Neither one seems to work though.  The traffic just keeps flowing.
I have the following summary in my IAP:
    1    9toMidStoT                 Deny  Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu   21:30 - 23:55
    2    midto6AMEveryday   Deny   Every Day                              00:00 - 06:00
    3    AllowDays                  Allow Every Day                                06:00 - 21:30
    4    Late                             Allow  Fri, Sat                                    21:30 - 23:55
Each of the four rules is enabled.
I have the same MAC addresses specified in each rule.  Initally I had only the first two rules.  Those didn't work, so I added rule 3 and 4 (they do the same thing as rules 1 and 2 but from the opposite direction).  There are no compliaints, but they don't stop any traffic.
I started with the Parental Controls, they didn't work either.  The page in there that lets you pick which machines you want to block seemed next to worthless.  I have about four rows listed as "Network Device."  REALLY LAME!  As the MAC addresses are accesible and these weren't working I went to the IAP.
Does anyone else have this working?  Is this feature broken in 1.0.03?  I had it working in 1.0.01.
    Thanks!

What happens when you set "block internet access" to always? I have also had weird experiences with this feature.
For example, as I am typing this message, I have instructed the router to block all internet access on this computer (using parental controls), yet I am still able to visit this forum; although, other websites are blocked. I'll also try your rules and see what effect they have on my computer.
I also agree with you about the annoying "network device" issue that happens when the router isn't able to identify the devices' hostnames. There are also devices that appear in that list, which haven't seen in my DHCP table for awhile.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • WGM - Parental Controls allow access to the following websites only...

Hi...I have been asked to set all the students in our school with a whitelist only Internet list.  I am managing this by group in WGM using parental controls - managed always - checked box "Limit access to websites by" - drop down box "allow access to the following websites only." This is working exactly the way it is supposed to BUT apple.com is being allowed even though it is not in the list.  Is there a way to blacklist apple.com?  Thanks for any ideas or advice!

Now why am I not surprised....?

  • After upgrade to 10.8.1, Internet access stops after approx. 50MB of traffic.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and when I started upgrading OS components and other apps, downloads would stop after about 50MB. Once this happens, all requests in internet browsers also lost internet access. If I turn Airport off and then on again, I can access the internet but the same problem occurs again once I continue other downloads.
I have other computers and they don't suffer from this problem, so I know if is not my internet provider or my wireless network.
    Any ideas?

Me too! I'm also getting display problems in emails where scrambled graphics are overlaid interactive parts of emails like dates telephone numbers!

  • Parental control - disk access limit

i work in a university department with about 40 students sharing 8 macs. some of them work with video and audio as part of their studies. only a couple of them could be called experienced. we've created separate accounts for all of them.
the problem is that the startup disk fill up very quickly. buying more hd space would not solve the problem, but i do try to teach them some 'file hygiene'. at the same time i want to totally strip down their access to the startup disk, only allowing them to store to their personal external drives.
i'm looking at parental control and reduced finder, but can't figure a way to remove the 'documents' and 'shared' folders from the dock.
    is there another way?

Well... You should be mounting their home directories off of network storage and using quotas. Network storage, though slower, means that they only have data in one place and they aren't leaving stuff on the local machines (they can even work locally can copy it when done, and you can have something cleanup when they log out).
Here's how to implement user disk quotas in OS X: http://www.secure-computing.net/wiki/index.php/HFS%2BDiskQuotas
Most of the various network storage options you have will permit you to set disk quotas as well. NAS devices tend to offer this feature, as do most commonly used operating systems used for file servers (FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, even lowly Windows).

  • Control Internet access using machines names

Hello to all, I have some machines (> 100) that are DHCP client and are on different subnets. I need that users that work on these machines don't access Internet. Is a there a way on TMG 2010 to create any
kind of control to accomplish this need?
        Regards, EEOC.

    Hi,
You can only control the traffic with IP addresses not computer names. A other way to limit internet access is to use users and groups in TMG firewall policy rules. The clients must be Webproxy or TMG clients

  • Parental controls - printer access

I have set parental controls for my daughter's laptop and I'm finding them a little too controlling!  In particular, it requires my consent for accessing our wifi home printer (not a problem, I've approved that) but then also for the printer at her school. Other than turning off controls for a day to allow her to get authorized for whatever printers they have at the school, and hoping that the authorization will last, is there a way to exclude printing from the parental controls in the first place?
    Thanks

Never mind!  Found the box to uncheck for printer admin.

  • Software for controlling internet access with Airport Exreme

I'd like to find software that let's me control what pc's in the house have internet access at certain times. My iMac is my main computer, and I use Airport Extreme as my router.

You probably need to set the card up in OSX. Verizon should have a modem script that needs to be installed. (Hard Drive>Library>Modem Scripts). Then you need to set up the card from Network Preferences. Then it should work on both platforms.

  • Parenting - Is it possible to control internet access at certain times.

Is it possible to make an iphone not have access to the internet.  I realize I can turn wifi and cellular data off but my child could obviously turn it back on.  I want to only allow wifi and cellular data usage on weekends.  Any suggestions?

Since you should be able to monitor his call usage and data usage, you could tell him/her, you can't make calls or go online except on weekends. If I find out that you disobey, I will take it away for 1 day the first time, 1 week the second time, and 1 month the third time. If there is a fourth time, it's gone for good.
Kids need boundaries and need to learn consequences. At least that's what I'd do.

  • How can I control internet access of clients

I've been wondering about this myself. I'm new to OSX server so I'm not all that familiar with the range of software and setups that are out there. This weekend however, I plan to take my Server and install another ethernet card in it. I'll proceed to hook one ethernet card into my DSL router and the built in card to the rest of the network.
I already have DNS set up in my server admin, but I'll additionally need to set up NAT and DHCP, i think this can be done through the 'Gateway Setup Assistant', but I think I know how to do it in server admin should that fail.
Once that's set up, users will access the internet directly through the gateway provided by the OSX Server. I'm not sure what kind of built in monitoring mechanisms are provided, but judging from the lack of detail I've found in my own research I'd say they're insufficient at best.
I'm looking to installing Viacoms "Intercept" software (http://www.vicomsoft.com/download/download.main.html) on the mac, it has a range of monitoring tools I think I'll need, also they offer a 2 week demo version for download. So it's worth a try
Hope this helps you save some time...

  • Can I control Internet Access Centrally from the H...

    Hi,
Is it posible to block access to certain categories of internet web sites directly from the hub using OPENDNS or any other method?
I can set access times using the bthomehub, but I would like to be able to check/limit the material they are able to access as well.
Can I apply this control centrally from the hub and not have to set up the control on individual machines in my home, as I would if I use the BT Netprotect.
My kids access the internet with ipads and phones and so a central solution from the hub would be ideal.
    Thanks
