Parents' computer, oy--questions re: RAM, OS, speed, etc.

My parents won't use their computer for anything except email, because it's so slow. I want to fix a few things for them. Specs are at the bottom of the post.
Questions:
1) Can this computer take OS X 10.5? If so, do I have to buy 10.4 first, or can I buy 10.5 and upgrade directly from 10.3.9?
2) How much RAM can I add? And what kind of RAM do I need?
3) Where do I find instructions on how to install the RAM? (I'm not afraid of opening up the computer)
4) Should I buy the RAM directly from Apple, or can I go the Crucial route?
5) Can I install Open Office on this computer?
6) What else would you suggest to make the computer run faster? (At first I thought it was just web browsing, and possibly a modem or connection problem, but other software opens very very slowly, scrolling brings up the spinny beachball of doom, etc.). I have a sense that they've not used the computer wisely, and have probably caused some slowdown just by being computer illiterate.
ANY HELP AT ALL IS APPRECIATED.
Specs:
Machine Model: iMac
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.9f1

Hi,
1. It will run Leopard - Just. But not in its current configuration. Min' RAM is 512mb.
2. Max' RAM on this model is 1G ( I think ). Getting it to that level is no 5 minute job...
3. Here is how to take it all apart...
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
The correct tools, patience and a steady hand are essential!!!
4. Crucial dot com is much cheaper than Apple for RAM. There is also a nifty little "scan my system" feature on there.
5.Yes!
6. All of the above will take time and cost money. Only you can answer this next question... Is it worth spending all that time and money on a computer that is several years old?
If it were my money the answer would be - No. For the investment outlined above, you are almost halfway to a brand new iMac. It solves all the problems in a fraction of the time. Plus the G4 is still a very saleable computer - Perhaps even the other half of that new Mac?
Other considerations...
Leopard will take around 9Gigs of space on that drive. I would guess that you have a 40 or a 60Gig currently. Open Office will be another large amount of disk space. The speed issue you have currently may be due to lack of free space. Going through all the hoops as above is not going to make things any better.
Then there is the reliability issue - There are only 2 types of computer on earth. 2 and only 2! - Those that have failed and those that will fail. The computer is around 5-6 years old now. Hmmmm?
Hope that helps a little and good luck if you do decide to perform open heart surgery on the 'puter.
Regards.
Ian.

  • What computer component - graphic card, ram, cpu speed - are best for CS 6 Extended?

I recently purchased CS 6 Extended. I just learned it does not work with my XP Professional operating system. I need to upgrade and was hoping for some guidance in what to look for in a new system. I would like to keep my cost below $2,500 if possible. I also use my computer for 3D modeling programs (Daz 3D and Poser mostly) for both still and animation work, altho my main concern is with CS 6 Extended. Thanks in advance for any advice.

All are important.  Photoshop stresses every part of your computer.
Whenever trying to figure out what combinations of hardware give good performance I start by looking at the Passmark benchmark results.
    http://www.passmark.com/
Their web-aware Performance Test application, which you can download and use for a while for free, facilitates people around the world testing their systems and uploading the results, then you can use it to download baselines from different systems and compare graphically.
Notably systems built around the i7-3930K Sandy Bridge processor are topping their all-around score performance chart at the moment.
Some general guidelines for use with Photoshop I'd suggest:
Get at least 16GB of RAM, more if future-proofing is important to you and you can afford it (I have 48GB).  I strongly recommend ECC.
Get a video card that scores at least 1000 on the Passmark G3D test (pretty much any card at $100 and above does that nowadays).  You don't need God's own high-end card for Photoshop, but don't skimp either.
Consider SSD storage, as SSDs have arrived in the mainstream and no longer need a lot of special care (though they're still expensive but dropping).
Only a few months ago I embarked on the same search you're doing.  I kind of normally follow a kind of off-beat track myself...  I watch for off-cutting-edge workstations to become available (e.g., off lease) on eBay, then outfit them with great hardware components, such as an array of SSDs and a mid- to high-end gamer video card.  I like these kinds of systems because they're optimized for high throughput and reliability overall vs. raw speed at specific things.  There's nothing like having dual Xeons with tons of cores and hyperthreading for 3D rendering.    Right now I have a Dell Precision T5500 system that has top-of-the-line parts in it.  This config cost over $10K at Dell just before they released their T5600 line, then dropped WAY down after.  Per the Passmark benchmark it's still the most powerful Dell as yet benchmarked based on overall score.

  • I downloaded digital hd copies of movies onto my parents' computer and they have a new computer now, and the movies aren't there, even though they have the same apple ID. What do I do to get them to download?

I downloaded digital hd copies of movies onto my parents' computer and they have a new computer now, and the movies aren't there, even though they have the same apple ID. What do I do to get them to download?
    New computer: Dell, Windows 8.1
    Processor: Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
    64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
    16 GB RAM
    itunes up-to-date
Old computer: Dell, Microsoft Windows XP
    Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU @ 2.80GHz
    1 GB RAM
itunes not up-to-date (updating it isn't really an option)
I have these movies downloaded on the old computer from digital hd redeemed codes: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Super 98, Thor, Inception, The Hunger Games, and Star Trek Into Darkness. I bought Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on itunes with money, and that one isn't showing up either. When I search it on itunes to see if I can just re-download it, that isn't an option. I would have to buy it again. Home Sharing isn't what I want because the old computer will not be here forever and it is not connected to wifi.
It's kind of a lot of movies, and I want them on the new computer.

im so happy I have a iTunes Card Code absolutely free! I got it at http://linkbitty.com/freeitunes2014

  • Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
Btw my english isn't very good

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.

  • I was getting support for my Office 2008 for Mac, and the support tech said my OS was very slow. I have latest update for Snow10.6.7. Question how can I speed up my Macbook?

I was getting support for my Office 2008 for Mac, and the support tech said my OS was very slow. I have latest update for Snow10.6.7. Question; How can I speed up my Macbook?

    Hi
In the first instance, I'd use Onyx and run through its sequence of maintenance and tune up tools:
    Verify, Maintenance, Cleaning.
I'd also reset the SMC and PRAM (Google them)
If that doesn't help then I'd look at System Preferences.. > Accounts > Login Items tab (not Login Options).  Check what processes get started at login and decide which ones you don't want.
After that I'd use Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see if any processes are using a lot of computer power or if anything else nasty might be happening.
If none of this helped then my final step would be to reinstall OS X.

  • Question about RAM CL

Hi guys. I'm finalizing my PC build and have a question about ram CL that I cannot find answers to on the tweakers page here. http://ppbm7.com/index.php/news/planning?showall=&start=3
I'd like to use these two ram sticks as an example.
    Transcend JetRam™ High-Performance 8GB DDR3-1333 240-Pin Module : CL9, 6-Layer PC Board
    Transcend JetRam™ High-Performance 8GB DDR3-1600 240-Pin Module : CL11, 6-Layer PC Board, Ultimate cross-platform compatibility and stability
My question is, which is better for video editing? On the one hand we have 1333mhz at with a CL of 9. On the other, we have faster 1600mhz ram, but at a higher CL of 11. Now, I'm not one to get caught up in the technicalities like it may seem, but I do want to understand these so I can make informed decisions, especially when price is a factor. In this case however, they are the same price...

    From http://ppbm7.com/index.php/news/cpu-mobo
Make up your mind about the number of memory sticks you want to install. On the X79 platform, do you want to use 4 slots, or do you want to fully populate all 8 slots? This is very important especially with i7-3930K / 4930K CPU's, which have a rather finicky memory controller.
Make a shortlist of quad or octo packs of memory sticks in the size you want, limiting yourself to ONLY sticks using 1.5V or less.
Check the motherboard manufacturer's site QVL list to see which of the sticks on your shortlist are approved. Pay attention to the number of slots for which they are approved. Some modules are approved for 4 slots only, others for fully populated use.
Check the memory manufacturer's site QVL list to see which motherboards are approved.
Try to establish if there are users that have been successful in using the sticks on your shortlist and delete any that were giving trouble to others. NewEgg can be a good source for that.
Now that you have a very short shortlist, contact the Technical Support departments of both the motherboard manufacturer and the memory manufacturer and ask them to confirm or deny the compatibility of the memory modules in the quantity you need.
If both confirm compatibility, check the physical height of the modules including heatsink in relation to the intended CPU cooler. Do they fit without modding?
In general, only buy matched sets of memory sticks. There are too many different sticks with the same type number, that will cause grief when bought as four single sticks, but you limit the risk by only buying quad sets or octo sets for fully populated X79 platforms.
CAS latency is no longer important, in fact, with the finicky nature of the memory controller of the Sandy Bridge-E, it can be advantageous to choose a higher CAS latency for improved compatibility. What can be important - relatively speaking, only in single digit % performance differences - is the rated speed of the memory, 1333 or 1600 or 2133 or even 2400.
Even though the X79 platform only supports - at least officially - up to DDR3-1600, one can use XMP profiles in the BIOS to have the memory run at its rated speed of say 2133. For my new 'Monster' I followed these steps and ended up with a fully populated 8 x 8GB octo set of G.Skill RipjawsZ F3 DDR3-2133 sticks that are running without any problems at 2180 MHz.

  • Had an Excel file in the dock. When I restarted  computer a question mark appeared in the dock. I can't find the file. Where can I find what was in the dock on my Time Capsule

I had an Excel file icon in my Dock on the compter. When I restarted my computer a Question mark appeared where the file icon was located in the dock. I need to find that file. I can't locate it either on my computer or on the Time Capsule . Anyone have any thoughts where the actual file may be located?

    Sorry, you lost me.
If the file is on your computer, then you will find it if you open Excel, click the File menu, and click Open Recent.
If you deleted the file before Time Machine saved it, it is gone.
If the file was on your computer long enough for Time Machine to save it, it will be in your Time Machine backups.
Open up Time Machine, wait a few minutes for it to load, and click on All Files on the left side of the window.
Then scan to select a purple bar over on the right hand side of the window to select a recent date when you know that the document was on your Mac.
If the document was saved, then you will see it in there somewhere. Click on the file to highlight, then click Restore to bring it back to the present time.

My iphone 4 is synced to my parents computer, can I change this to sync my iphone with my laptop? If so, how?

Plug it into your computer and sync.
Since iphone will sync with only one computer at a time, your content will be erased and replaced with coneetent from your computer, so make sure you copy everything from your parents computer to yours first.

  • I synced my iPhone to my parents computer to set up and now i can sync to my computer

I bought my wife the Iphone 4 for Christmas and set it up on her parents computer now that we are home it wont pick it up on my itunes account because we started on their computer.  How can we make this her home computer so it will update.  We can only get 1/2 of her contacts to pull up from her old phone.  We only have one Itunes account which is mine but it shows her device on my itune store.  Is this a problem or is there a way that we need to make her an account so it shows her music

    Hello skkmmayer,
That is probably a lot of stuff you do not want on your iPhone. So this can be handled a few different was. For you current situation, you can delete the apps directly on your iPhone by holding on the app until it starts to jiggle and then tap on the X of all the apps that you do not want. The second thing you can do is before you sync with iTunes, look at the app section on your iPhone to know what gets transfer to it and you can deselect items that you do not want. Lastly, if you download content on your iPad and it is a universal app, you can actually download it directly to your iPhone by looking at your past purchases and download it directly from the App Store. Check out the articles below for more information if need further assistance.

  • Add ram to speed up Lion???

Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 15" 4 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo, 250 HD. I Installed Lion the first day it came out and my MBP has been running slower and the proccessor is running 20 degrees hotter than before. I'm wondering if I should add more ram to speed thing up and get some more stability, or if my 2009 system is just to outdated for Lion.
When no Applications are running (except Active Manager) I have about 750 MB of free RAM.

Correct! It seems to be weird and I'm just a person that doesn't know what I'm saying but that's true! Lol! I didn't notice anything being slow at the time. I always keep all my Apps shut down when I'm not using them, so I never really have more than one app running at one time.
It seemed to be normal this morning as if I was running Snow Leopard again...but all I did was check out this discussion.
Right now with only Safari open I have about 2.25 GB.

Make a smart playlist of your whole library but only checked songs - #4 on  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1801
Highlight all files in that playlist, then drag to the other drive.  This isn't preserving any playlists or whatever, just copying files from one drive to another.
You might want to delete the smart playlist this once you are done because it will probably gobble up resources with that many files.
