Parts of FCE finished movie looks distorted on HDTV

i took a rough cut of a sequence i'm working on and exported it to quicktime in FCE, then took the resulting file and used toast to create a DVD. my purpose was to check to see how the safe area markers in FCE worked in my real life home TV situation. the safe areas are fine, but now i find that some of my still pictures, which looked fine during the edit process inside FCE, now look stretched and distorted on my TV. Any thoughts on what might have caused this? i used the export to quicktime output option, not the quicktime conversion method (as described in tom's book).

Hi(Bonjour)!
HDTV... did you use a high def sequence settings (Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 or so) to edit your stills?
What kind of DVD format did you cchoose in toast, a Blue-Ray (high def) or DViX one ?
To get a final HD material, you have to use HD settings at each step of workflow.
As you know HD is alway 16:9, but the pixel aspect ratio can be different from one HD format to another.

  • Looks good in FCE but DVD looks bad

Hi Guys hope you can help, Have FCE, imports from sony handycam , everything looks good and tight in FCE but when exported to iDVD the finished product looks terrible, hard to describe but looks blurry, almost a ghosting to motion shots, this doesn't do it when I burn from iMovie, I've tried different setups in easy setup with no luck, However I did ( out of frustration) export back to tape and then import into iMovie and then burned from there and it looked much better, please help, thank you

Thank you for responding so quickly, I'm not sure what you require for spec on the Mac but it's a Mac Pro with Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
OS isMac OS X 10.5.4, FCE is version 4, Quicktime is version 7.5, iMovie is version 7.1.4
Sony camcorder is DCR-SR42( 1/6 type) CCD 680,000 pixels, this is a non-tape type, internal harddrive. Note: I also have a Sony DCR TRV 310 tape type that FCE does see and able to control, Clip info says Compressor = DV/DVCPRO- NTSC Data rate = 3.6MB/sec
FCE doesn't see the Sony DCR-SR 42 camcorder when I connect ( via USB) but iMovie does, so I download into iMovie, clips come in as a .mov, clip info says 720x480, FCE clip info says : Creator =Quicktime Player, Compressor= Apple MPEG-2 SD camcorder Video, Data rate=1.2MB/sec, Frame size= 720x480, Vid Rate= 29.97 fps.
So files in iMovie, I open FCE and import files from iMovie , tried using the XLM export from iMovie and it does work however after doing compared testing on test DVD the imported files looked better than the XLMs. I have the easy setup using the DV-NTSC as that's the only one that comes close to what I'm using, same goes for when I export, I export using the Quicktime export with self contained off.
I have iDVD set to professional encoding, (ya I know , iDVD not that professional) when final burn is done and played on a DVD player on a LCD the finished video is really low resolution quality, the content is of a football game ( my sons) using tripod of coarse, but the images are rough, blockly, looks like really bad codec or wrong codec or wrong conversion type or too much compression. I have done other DVD's with iMovie from tape camera that look alot better than what I'm getting from FCE, Please help, what I'm I doing wrong, thank you

  • Tinting part of an animated movie clip

Hello - I have a need to tint part of an animated movie clip. For example, I might have a movie clip that consists of 2 layers, 1 layer that is tinted, and one layer that is not tinted. The animation needs to be done by an artist - it is not an algorithmic animation.
One way to do this is to make each layer a separate movie clip. Then I can apply a tint using the colorTransform property in ActionScript 3 on the 2nd movie clip. This works correctly but has several issues:
It makes it extremely difficult for the artist who creates the original animation. They can't scroll through the timeline and see what the final result looks like (like they could before the layers were converted to movie clips).
In order to drive the animation, you have to call gotoAndPlay on each sub-movie clip, instead of just once at the root level. This can cause mistakes if one movie clip's animation is slightly different than the other's.
I've played around with a ton of ways to do this, but nothing seems to work - either the tint ends up getting lost as the movie clip plays, or the tint sticks but the animation on the movie clip disappears.
Some examples of the types of things that would make this possible would be being able to assign a Tint setting from the the Flash IDE to an actionscript variable that I could change dynamically, being able to apply tints to layers instead of movie clips, etc. As far as I can tell, none of this is accessible in actionscript.
Does anyone have suggestions on how I can solve this problem, either through actionscript or by changing how the original Flash .fla is set up? To reiterate - making it so the artist can easily create the animation and maintain it is a top priority.
    Thanks!

it doesn't matter what kind of loop you use as long as it
checks frequently enough to catch the termination condition, not
too frequently so it wastes computing resources and terminates when
    no longer needed.

  • Pages Panel looks distorted

I'm working to apply master pages to a document for page numbers and such, and the pages panel looks distorted and won't load properly.  I have tried starting and restarting the program and computer.  The document works properly on another program in my office, but I really need it to work on mine.  I am running InDesign CS6 8.0.2.
If anyone has any idea of how to fix this please let me know.
Also, how do I move a master page number over a box, creating the background color?  Do I have to apply it in another layer?

This is what it looks like, but sometimes it gets hung up on other words or items.
You cannot drag master pages to pages like you are supposed to be able to.

  • Did iDVD delete my FCE HD movie?!

I exported a FCE HD movie to iDVD for a burn. Now I can't find the project file. I checked the pref pane on iDVD and looks like it defaults to deleting rendered files after it burns a DVD. Did it delete my movie? I can't find the sequence in FCE HD. I can not figure out what is going on! Help!

Walked away, came back, clicked open the project''s icon, and it opened up perfectly intact. Am going to do some diag's on the machine today.

  • Help! my video looks distorted!

I created a movie (mostly using still photos) on final cut express and when previewing it in final cut AND when viewing it after it was burnt to a dvd....it looks distorted. There's a bunch of lines all over the place...which makes the stills unclear and it's especially more obvious when using the ken burns effect. Does anyone know what's going on? Please help!

First, I click the effects tab>video>de-interlace. I then drag the de-interlace icon that is in the effects tab to a still picture in the timeline. When I double click on the picture in the timeline, I then click on the filters tab in the viewer window. De-interlace is shown under the video filters list. I have tried all options under de-interlace (lower-odd, lower-even, flicker filter-minimal, flicker filter-medium,filter flicker-max) and they all do not work. When I preview it, it looks like there's a slight blur to the picture. But after I render the video, those jagged lines still appear on all straight edges in the picture. I have burnt the video to dvd, using idvd, and it still looks the same when I view it on my TV. Is there another way to view the video on the TV before burning it to a DVD so that I do not have to waste anymore DVDs? Am I adding the de-interlace incorrectly? Please, please, please help me! It's so frustrating and my movie is due next week, so I need to figure this out real quick. Thank you guys for trying to help

  • Imovie HD acting weird; won't show finished movie in the big screen

My Imovie HD has started acting totally weird. First off, it wouldn't show finished movie projects in the large viewing screen. Then there were clips that no longer showed up. Sometimes I can hear the sound of a clip, but not see it. I tried compressing a project in quicktime to publish it on the Web and I got an error. Then the imovie started acting weird. Now when I open it, it just closes on its own.
I've run disk utility and no problems were found. I also tried Tech Tool. And I couldn't find the plist file for imovie at all to delete it. I've also emptied the cache files. HELP!

There is probably an app. malfunction. You should have a certified Apple salesman look at it. Other than that, i am not sure what to do.

  • Good-looking quicktime movie looks crummy once burned to dvd

Hi. I made a cool home movie in Final Cut Express; exported it into a quicktime movie - looked good when I played it in quicktime. Then I burned it to a dvd-r (about 60 minutes of footage), and when I played the dvd on my dvd player on the tv, it looked crummy?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

All sorts of advice, but we will need more specifics to be of more help. For one, define crummy. What version of QT and OS X? How was the movie exported from FCE? iDVD expects a DV file... if you exported out of FCE using some sort of compression (other than DV ) that isn't good. What was your source material? • Make a DVD and export finished movie back to videocam

I have new iMac with Maverick and iMovie 10.0.2  I was great with iMovie 6-so easy. I have tried to review previous discussions.  My new Mac does not have iDVD. (is there anyway to put iDVD in the new computer?)  I just want to make a DVD of finished movie so I can play it on a TV. Unfortunately the new Mac only makes an Mp4. Please can someone give me step by step instruction how to make a DVD. I will get Toast Titanium if necessary but would still need step by step. I have looked at online tutorials but I can't put it together. I am much older since trying the new iMovie. So many extra steps, etc.
Also, how can I share the finished movie with my video cam (i.e. move it back to my videocam or its SD).  I can move it to CNN, Vimeo, Facebook, etc. but not back to my camera like it was when so easy with iMovie 6.  Thank you.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

  • Best way to archive a finished movie?  Take 2

Hi, I need to clear off the captured video for several projects off my hard drive, and close out those FCE projects. What is the best way to archive my finished movie? I thought it would be to create a 'self-contained' Quicktime file, but learned that if I want to import such a file into DVD Studio Pro, it won't work. Should I save the movie as a 'self-contained' Final Cut Express Movie file (which will import into DVDSP) or is such a file inferior to a Quicktime .mov file? Or is there some other option?
    Thanks, Bob

Thanks for your reply. I've been experimenting and here is what I found.
Yes, iDVD does import a Quicktime file, but DVD Studio Pro doesn't. Go Figure. DVDSP gives an Alert Box that says, "Incompatible Format". (FCE will import either a Quicktime file or a FCE Movie File.)
I saved a short movie (about a minute and a half) both as Quicktime file and FCE Movie file. Both are 'self-contained'. Interestingly, the (highest quality) Quicktime file is only 163 MB while the FCE Movie File is 304 MB.
So they are not the same. I would tend to think that the FCE file is better for archiving, assuming that the larger size (304 MB) means better quality. But, on the other hand, it seems that a Quicktime file is something that is more universally used. For instance, I may want to send a file to be used by someone who doesn't have Final Cut.
    Confused, Bob

  • Dark "scan lines" across finished movie frame

I'm trying to put together a movie from still photos and recorded audio. It needs to be output in 1024x780 pixel format to match the projector used at a multimedia show. All the images were taken with a 8 megapixel digital camera, and I have used PhotoShop to format them as 1024x780 prior to dropping them into iMovie. Everything looks good in the iMovie timeline editor, however when I compress the finished movie using Expert Settings into the final format, I get thin horizontal black lines across the frame that breaks the image into many thin horizontal bands. I've tried switching to other codecs to see if I can make the problem go away, but anything that can produce the finished movie in something other than standard video format causes the same problem. The only thing that seems to work is letting the program make the movie in standard video format, such as making a .avi file instead of a .mov or a .mp4 out of it, but then I don't have a full-frame image for the projector at the show, which is necessary.
The show producer says this is a generic Mac iMovie issue and he wants me to switch to PhotoPro on an Windows XP machine. Surely this isn't true and there is a fix to this problem.
    Ideas anyone?

Eep, I'm so sorry, I just realised I posted this in the wrong forum.. I don't know how that happened o_o
I'm actually using Adobe Premiere Elements 9 - Is there any way to move this thread or should I just make a new one?  I suppose the questions are still relevant though?
I'm using Procaster from livestream.com to capture videos
    With G-Spot:
The source file doesn't have these lines though
I have no idea how to find the sequence settings but maybe that's because it's a Pro thing rather than an Elements thing?
As from what I can see, because it's sped up, it's actually merging 2 frames (so alternating the lines from each frame?) when I'd rather it just drop one frame

  • How do I make multiple movies look like one?

I created a demo of 136 slides with mostly screencaps and one
small flash animation. The final published flash file is
approximately 30MB. When the demo is run on multiple computers, the
CPU utilization rises up to almost 100%, this makes the demo run
very slowly on most computers. I was advised to cut my captivate
movie in half ( in slides)... however even then the CPU utilization
is quite high. How can I break my demo into multiple linked movies
(to bring down the file size) but still have it play smoothly
without it stopping to load after each new movie? How do I make
    multiple movies look like one?
    Thank you.

Would it work to make the navigation of the page go to the
    next movie?

  • Exported Movie looks good in Quicktime, but not in any other Player?

I Have noticed that the text that I have exported from After Effects were looking jagged in windows media and Kmplayer. At first I thought it was my render settings that were making it look low quality, but then I found that when played in Quicktime the movie look high rez. only problem is that quick time is extremely laggy when I open up my movies. Why is this happening?

Huh? That's simply hardware scaling. Your movie is not being viewed at 100% size.

  • Acrobat 9: Issue with Graphics Looking Distorted

Hi all. I'm sure that the answer to this is very simple and I am doing something ridiculous ...
I use Microsoft Publisher (2007 version) to create documents, and then convert them to PDF using Acrobat 9. Recently, I have noticed that many of the graphics elements that I use are looking distorted when viewed onscreen. They print out looking as smooth as they did in the original Publisher file, but are a lot less so onscreen. Seeing as many people read PDFs onscreen now, this is a bit of a worry.
I have tried saving graphics as JPEGs, GIFs, PNGs and TIFFs (in PhotoShop CS5) and get the same issue each time. Also, the quality between one save and another can be extremely variable. In the example I have attached (the top section is a screen grab from the Publisher file, the bottom when convereted), once or twice when saving the rotated image looked utterly dreadful (as in completely usable). However, when I would save it again a few minutes later, without having adjusted anyting, it looked a lot better.
In the example below, you can see our company logo and also the lines around the photograph don't look great. (The rest is just text, which always looks great.)
Any settings I am missing ... other PDFs I have seen always look great.
I have set the the PDF conversation to High Quality, so am not sure where I am going wrong.
