Path in Spotlight

Can someone tell me how to find the path to a file in a Spotlight search result. In Snow Leopard I would get the path to a file or folder by just holding the mouse over the search result in Spotlight. I don't see that in Lion.

Hold down option and command. You will see the path at the bottom of the preview window.

  • No More Location Path in Spotlight

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I notice that location paths are no longer shown when searching in Spotlight.
This is annoying as I have found that some files have gone missing from the Documents folder, and IF Spotlight finds them, it will open the files, but not show where they are.
Often, when searching in Spotlight, it will not find the missing item.
    Anyone else having this problem?

    Hi Tony,
It is curious that your solution did not work for me.  When I hit ⌘⌥, nothing changed.  It still shows
Name, KInd, Size, Created, Modified, Last opened, but not Path.
    Do you know why?

  • Find path through spotlight?

If I search using spotlight, is there a way to discover the path to a specific result from the spotlight window?

After the little preview appears, hold option and command and the path shows up at the bottom of the preview window.

  • Spotlight excluding path

    Hi,
I need to find out how to exclude path from spotlight search.
Eg. I want all application last opened a year ago, not including ones in my "Developer" folder.
I tried using the "URL" search field, but that gives me nothing.
    Any clues?
    Thanks

If you want to permanently exclude specific things from Spotlight all you need to do is drag the folder into System Prefs/Spotlight/Privacy. A temporary solution? I do not know if this is possible, sorry.

  • Use Spotlight to find a file

I can use Spotlight to find and open a file or document, but sometimes I want to see where on my hard drive a particular  file/document is.  When I was using Snow Leopard the path would be shown at the bottom of the window.  How do I find the path using Spotlight in Mavericks?

Highlight the result in Spotlight, a preview appears, hold the command key down and the name will appear, continue to hold it and the path will appear.

    hi dominic.
thanks for the help and the links.
there is something terribly lacking in mac UI with respect to this unless i am missing something. if i do a search in Spotlight i see results and even when i see the file i want to know something about i have to OPEN FINDER which shows a ton of results (including hundreds if not thousands of eml file that i have to call mac and probably pay to find out why they are still showing up when prefs in Spotlight say to not show them...)  and only then can i actively select the file and have it show a file path at the bottom of the finder window.
this is maddening. isn't there an option to show this information in Spotlight or to show this information WHEN THE FILE IS OPEN (apologies for the caps). i mean, if i have a file open, maybe i don't know /where/ it came from for some reason.
for instance, if i am in a hurry and i open the file directly from Spotlight i can edit it and save it but i still have no idea where it resides on my hard drive. similarly if i open a file directly from spotlight and DUPLICATE a file and i want to save it as Version 2 - i have to - - - - well i guess i have to run another search for the file i just opened and am working upon in order to just save the dang file to the same location the original is in?
i mean, the links are showing that i should open Get Info but i think i need to see the file in finder to run this command anyway since i have to right click on the file itself.
maybe i am missing something but can't MAC OS just show me the FILE PATH at the top of the document like it does in Finder and also show me the FILE PATH in Spotlight? seems like the current implementation is like a big game of hopscotch for no good reason except the information is not shown to the (power) user.
maybe i am missing a new feature in ML or in Mavericks or maybe i am using the wrong terms in the original title?

  • Transferring Iphoto file from G5 to Mac laptop

I set up my laptop as a external drive and downloaded my Iphoto file from my G5 to the laptop. They are there but I cannot find the file. I can call individual photos up with Spotlight by name, but they do not appear in IPhoto, only in preview. The path in spotlight says they are in IPhoto, but they are not. I cannot find the entire 11 megabyte file on the laptop. What can I do?

    Where is the Library?
the path for individual pictures says they are in pictures/ IPHOTO,
Go to your Pictures Folder and see if the iPhoto Library is there. If it is, then you've found the Library, but iPhoto cannot open it for some reason. So, first step, confirm that the iPhoto Library is in the Pictures Folder.

  • Urgent: need threadsafe replacement for malloc

    Hi,
I have a native library that is using GetDirectBufferAddress to create large chunks
within the java memory model that I can use to subdivide and alloc from
in the native code instead of using malloc. However, there are multiple threads
using these chunks so I need a locking mechanism.
The problem is that MonitorEntry/MonitorExit takes 250 nanoseconds, which is
a huge price to pay for allocation and free, total = 500. My question is can I
do whatever malloc does in the GNU library to make itself immune to jvm
thread context switches, especially on multiple cpu machines. Spin locks,
openmp mutexes? Does anyone know how malloc is made threadsafe to
be ok to use within a JNI library? And how I can get my hands on the
    necessary code.
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Greetings Folks,
Like the original poster I am trying to back up my HD info. Got the exact same error message and code:
"The operation cannot be completed because one or
more required items cannot be found.
    (Error code -43).
Could not open the data fork of "<unable to get file path>" (-43)."
I was able to trace the error code down on Apple's Support site under the heading: Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server: "Error -43" When Using Windows File Sharing (SMB). Yay...except I have never used Windows file sharing and can't figure how this pertains to my problem.
    I did type
in the "<unable to get file path>" into spotlight and
    got several hits:
    Documents:
    core.html.html
    windows.html.html
    ssl_faq.html
    PDF Documents:
    About Xcode Tools.pdf
I deleted the "Documents" files (same ones as OP) that came up when I searched <unable to get file path> Was this an oops?
Anyway, the disc was only 50% complete. I got a
"closing session 1" window and that stayed active on
the desktop for a few minutes and then the dvd just
spit out. I put the dvd back in to see what was on it
and didn't even open for a minute or two, just heard
some clicking sounds from the drive and never got a
disc icon on the desktop to even look at what was on
the dvd. I gave it another try but sam thing
    happened.
Same thing happened here. I would really like to back up my files. I have already trashed several DVDs in my unsuccessful attempts.
I don't see any replies to the OP--is there anyone with a few cogent thoughts on all this out there? The same thing has now happened to at least 2 Mac users, which makes it seem a lot less like it's all in my head.
    Thank you many times over.

  • DVD won't run...why?

I have an iBook running 10.4.3. when i put in a dvd, i hear it spin up but nothing happens. it doesn't launch and it doesn't even show up in the finder. when i put the same dvd into my powerbook running leopard, it launches and runs perfectly. why won't it launch on my ibook?
    thank you!

The application may have a corrupt folder somewhere. I would go to Apple's site and see of re-downloading it. You can rid yourself of the old one by following its path via Spotlight, or with the assistance of a tool such as TinkerTool, OnyX. Also, they can be found at Apple downloads. It's worth a try.

  • Tiff dimensions 0x0 but file is 10.5MB. How to open?

I scanned in a file on a PC (Vista, using Windows Fax and Scan) and am trying to open it on my Mac.
Preview opens it but just shows a question mark, Photoshop says it can't read it. When I open it in Matlab it has data in it but is scrambled.
Get Info... shows a tif file of 10.5 MB, with dimensions of 0x0 an an Alpha channel of 0.
Anyone know where to start with this? I need to get the image as I have no way of scanning it again.

I got now already several times a similar error message:
mdworker32 quit unexpectedly while using the Microsoft Office plug-in
(the head of the error report is pasted in below)
The problem did show up after I updated my system yesterday from 10.8.5 to 10.9.1.

    Question:
Is it save to delete this file:

After upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.9.2, when using Spotlight, there is no 'Path' when highlighting a search result like in 10.6.8.
