Pc & mac compatible wireless ethernet lacie mini drive how to format?

ok, I have a ethernet drive connected to my wireless modem/router. My pc laptop sees it no problem, but my macbook pro won't. I know it's because the lacie drive is NTFS formatted, but I can't for the life of me work out how to reformat it to FAT32. Any ideas? Any lacie forums out there I can ask? Ta.

I have two ethernet drives connected to my router.
There isn't a hope of even communicating with them on the Mac because there's no Mac compatible software available to do it.
I've no intention of dabbling with them because I might lose the data. Time Capsule appears to be a solution to this one.

  • Is there a Mac-compatible wireless print server?

This is a variation on a theme many have touched upon. I want to have my Airport Extreme wirelessly connected to two printers (B&W laser, and color inkjet) currently connected by USB cables, stretched to 16' limit. Printers can't be moved conveniently to a closer position. I bought a $100 NetGear wireless print server WGSP606 (two USB ports) at CompUSA yesterday after staff there said it would work with Macs. Alas, it doesn't. The printers are not wireless models; the wireless print server supposedly (if Mac-compatible) would effectively make them wireless. From the various posts I get impression that an Airport Express might work, but could it serve two printers? Anyone know of a Mac-compatible wireless print server? Or have a workaround suggestion? Any help much appreciated.

I'd say if the print server supports standard printing protocols, then OS X will work with it. But there are issues you should learn about.
The network comm protocols you see in Printer Setup Utility are part of the CUPS system. Very few (only Brother so far) non-postscript printer drivers work correctly with the CUPS system. The manufacturers have provided OS 9-style drivers that have USB comm written into the driver, limiting you to USB use only. Postscript printers don't have this issue because they don't need a driver, just a PPD. Apple tried to get around this issue by including Gimp-Print open source CUPS drivers, but the models supported are limited. So, the first issue is - is a CUPS driver available?
Protocol setup on OS X is the next issue. For Windows, there is autosetup software for nearly every print server sold new. We don't have that software on OS X, so we need to enter the correct info into Printer Setup. The IP > IPP and IP > LPD protocols require a print-server-specific queue name together with IP address to route data to the printer. Because of the Windows autosetup software, help desk people at Netgear may not even know this basic info. But nearly all print servers correctly support the standards and the device queue name can be found in the print server manual.
The advantage of Airport Express and Extreme as print servers is that Apple uses the airport/Bonjour software to redirect USB output from the computer to the USB on the Express/Extreme. Kind of avoids the printer driver issue but also takes away some standard IP protocols (only HP jetdirect is supported for non-Bonjour printers).
Sorry for the mini-lecture. Hope this helps.
(Airport Express/Extreme is only for one printer)

    Hi, two ways...
Put the Install Disc in another Mac tathas Firewire, put the other Mac into Target mode...

This turns the other Mac into a big Firewire DVD drive, then boot the MDD holding the Option Key, select the Install Disc in the other Mac to boot the MDD from.
    Or an external FW DVD...

  • Mac Compatible Wireless USB Dongle

Recently, I purchased a used iBook G4 (Mid 2005). The price was right, but the seller informed me that there was an issue with the Airport card. That issue being that the computer would kernel panic whenever airport was turned on.
I have been running the computer smoothly with airport turned off and a direct connection to the internet. However, the lack of portability is becoming frustrating, and rather than pay to have the computer serviced, or replace the card myself (Airport Card is not a DIY on the mid 2005 iBook like I initially thought), I decided to buy a USB dongle to connect to my wireless network.
However, after several frustrating searches, I have been unable to find a USB dongle that is Mac compatible. I imagine that many are compatible with OS X 10.4.11 even if it isn't explicitly mentioned, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a good USB dongle that I would be able to use with little to no problems.
Ooops! Should have marked this topic as a question. My apologies ...

http://www.macwireless.com/ may have a solution for you, but it won't be USB. You can attach an ethernet wireless router to the ethernet port of the machine and share a wireless network with another wireless router. I don't recommend using USB wireless dongles as they tend to be slower than you may want, and frequently they only have non-standard drivers, which can get very picky if the machine falls asleep.

  • Mac Compatible Wireless Cards

Are there any wireless adapters that are compatible with a powermac G4? I put a PCMCIA card into the airport slot to see if it fit, when there was no Operating system or power on the computer, would that break it? But mostly, are there any compatible wireless adapters for the computer other than the airport card. If there are none, i may be able to get an airport card on craigs list but i'd prefer a new wireless adapter.
    Thanks, Bennett

As long as you have a compatible wireless router, Yes, everything should be immediate after setup in OS X.

Buy another backup drive. Keep this as is. depends on what and how you do backups. TimeMachine? there are program utilities to help manage but it is 'suppose' to manage itself (have 3.5x capacity of data you backup helps). You didn't say what type of backup method was used.

  • Fresh installed, unformatted drive - how to format

I just bought a SSD and it will arrive in a few days, but I still can't find a clear answer about how to format an unformatted drive. The only answer I can find is to use the installaion disk, I don't have that. I am running mountain lion and can make a flash drive boot, but I can't figure out how to boot from flash. I wanted to know if anyone knew if I can boot by using CMD + R on an unformatted drive to format it? Or anybody know a command that I can use to boot from flash drive?

The easiest way is to get yourself an enclosure for the drive. Here's one example:
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=319523 3&CatId=2781
    1. To begin temporarily install the ssd in the enclosure - it should just slide in. You now have an external ssd drive.
    2. Connect it to your computer and use Disk Utility to format it as Mac OS Extended. (DU is in Applications / Utiities.)
    3. Transfer whatever you want from the internal to the external using an app like Carbon Copy Cloner.
    4. Check the external is bootable by looking at System Preferences / Startup disk.
    5. Take the ssd out of the enclosure and install it in the Mac.
And you can put the original drive in the enclosure, as a bonus.

  • What is the best Mac Compatible wireless router?

    Hi,
I currently use a D-Link Dsl 300T Modem plugged directly into the computer. I used to use it with the airport express, but that went pop and stopped working a few months ago. I'm moving house and will need to set up a wireless network that several computers will be running off. (I used to have problems with the D-link modem when I ran several computers off it before) So could I just by a wireless router with a modem combined instead of buying a new modem and an airport express again? What are the best non Apple wireless routers out there?
    Many Thanks
    Rob

  • In order to fix my Mac, my friend had to erase the OS off of it then reinstall the OS onto MY Mac using HIS Apple ID. Now my Mac thinks its his not mine. How do I fix it?

Background: When I first downloaded Maverick on to my Mac as an update, apparently it wasn't a clean download and my Mac freaked out and wouldn't stay on. There was no hardware damage so I backed up my files onto an SD card and had my friend total wipe my Mac clean then reinstall Maverick. The problem now is that HIS Apple ID was the first used on the clean Mac and now it shows him as the owner and admin etc. How do I switch it to my name and Apple ID???

You do not say what OS you are running.
    Boot into Recovery
Use your Apple ID credentials to log in
Use Disk Utility to Partion the the drive and format
    Down load your Operating System
Use your backback to migrate your user data

  • Lacie hard drive, how do I view the files in Finder so I can delete some backups made by TimeMachine?

I have a 500GB La Cie external hard drive which Time Machine says is now too full to make way for the next backup.
I thought it would automatically delete the earliest backup to make way for the new but apparently not.
Can I look at the files in Finder and delete previous backups manually as I can't see how else to do it except buy another hard drive?
I have a Macbook pro new using Lion.

Time machine should do that automatically.  Nevertheless, read this article:
    http://pondini.org/TM/12.html
If all else fails you might consider erasing your external drive and reinstalling Time machine.  That though eliminates all history that you have on Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • External drive, how to format and partition?

    Hey everybody!
I'm about to buy an external drive for my mac. I am reasonably capable on a computer, but I've never done formatting or partitioning so I have two questions:
    1) I just want to check that I do not need to buy a mac-formatted drive. A little big of googling told me I could do the formatting myself with Disk Utility, just wanted to double check that that was true.
    2) Once I get my external drive, what I want to do is create two partitions within that drive, one for my Time Machine backup and one for random files and movies. I'm not sure how to do that (apparently I might need to pick different formats for each in Disk Utility?) so if anybody could help out that would be brilliant.
    Thanks
(if that helps, I have a MacBook Pro with a 512GB hardrive, and I want to buy a 1TB external drive)

    Hi,
Here is a link that will help you set up your external drive. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-an-external-hard-drive-for-use-with-os- x/
You won't need different formats for Time Machine backups and storage space partitions. However, given the size of your hard drive, 500 gb for Time Machine may not be enough. You could buy a separate one for Time Machine, budget permitting.
Check the size of your startup disk, and if it is only 250 gb or less, then 500 gb for Time Machine may be OK, for a while. It will soon fill up, but the older backups will be erased.
    Regards.

  • Disk repair failed / should I reformat my drive / how to format and restore

I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 model and upgraded to Yosemite. The performance on my MB is ok, but just out of curiousity I ran a disk verify, and was told I needed to reboot, hold down CMD / R and run disk repair. I did so and the repair failed. I was promoted to backup and reformat/restore.
Now, I do backup everything using time machine (not sure though if Parallels image is backed up). I do not however have any install disks for Mac OS.
    My questions:
    1. Should I even bother reformatting my HD?
    2. How do I go about formatting the HD and then re-installing the OS and all of my apps, particularly given that I have no DVD
Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you

If you have extra external HDD, make clone backup with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, then,
    1) boot from external clone backup drive.
    2) reformat internal HDD.
    3) restore from clone backup drive with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

  • External drive - how to format?

    Hi there
I'm about to buy a macbook after finaly getting fed up with my windows desktop. I'm going to buy a new external hard drive so I can store all my music and videos on it (it'll also make migrating a breeze) so it wont clog up my macbook hard drive, but I want it to be accessable in windows, should I need to take the files anywhere, or if i decide to use boot camp. I think I am going to have to format it it FAT32 format so that its readable and writable to both windows and OSX, can anyone confirm this or suggest something better?
Also, I'm looking at the Western Digital My Book Premium line, with the firewire and usb2 connection. Anyone had any experiences of using these drives?
    Thanks very much!

FAT32 is an older file format that was in place with Win98 before we used our computers for video and such that required these large files.
I do not know the ins and outs of it all, but if an individual file is larger than 4GB, FAT32 might read it, but not all of it, or maybe not at all. If you will be working with files of that size, then it is best to avoid FAT32.
Another option is a program like MacDrive. It allows a Windows PC to read and write to HFS volumes. That way you do not have any issues with file size and will never have an issue with your Mac reading those files.
I recommend that Oxford chipset because the others, such a Prolific, have shown to have spotty reliability when it comes to booting Macs. You might be able to see the drive, but mounting it in disk utility might be a problem too. I have yet to hear of a single problem with mounting or booting the Oxford 911 chipset in Macs. I chose it because of the reliability and recommend it to everyone without reservation. I feel the quality is worth it.
Disk utility is fine for formating, partitioning, erasing a drive - whatever you want to do.

  • Dead hard drive-how to format and startup with new disk

I have a 9 month old non-retina MBP. I replaced the HD with an SSD when I bought it. It seems the SSD has stopped working and I need to replace it. Grrr. I do have a Time Capsule backup that I can use, but how do I install the OS on the replacement SSD? After I have the MBP running with the new SSD, I should be able to reinstall everything else from the Time Capsule backup. I have another MBP that I can use for assistance/transferring/formatting if this will be helpful. Will Apple store Genius help me to do this? I would not be surprised that any warranty coverage may have been voided when I installed the SSD. I could use the other MBP to format the new SSD before installing it.

Your computer has got Internet Recovery. Use it to restore your backup.
To start in Internet Recovery, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting. Then, open Disk Utility, choose your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as format.
Finally, close Disk Utility, plug the external disk with your backup, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow its steps
