PC to Macbook user- Just purchased refurb - SLOW!!!!

2 weeks ago I purchased a Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5-- Im completely new to mac as I've been a pc user my whole life. (Last laptop was a lenovo thinkpad - was actually really happy with it, it was simple and did what I needed it to.  Unfortunately, it was the size of a minivan)
I was psyched to finally get a Macbook but I'm having a terrible time with the transition. Im not used to the functions. Everything feels SO intimidatingly different.  And worst of all - its SO SLOW! even playlist.com just buffers. help!!
Obviously something is wrong here.  Do I take it back? Do I get rid of programs? Add a program? I NEED a laptop for my job and the nearest Apple is 2 hours away. Please help!!

And worst of all - its SO SLOW! even playlist.com just buffers. help!!
According to playlist.com, the site requires the Flash plugin. So try troubleshooting...
Assuming you are using Safari to surf the net...
Quit Safari.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure to uninstall the currently installed Flash plugin before reinstalling.
Launch Safari From your Safari menu bar top of your scree click Safari > Empty Cache
Now try a video.
If you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. From your Safari menu bar top of your screen click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
It can also be installed as a plugin in  HD > Library > Library Internet Plug-Ins
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
When it's convenient, since you are new to Mac, there are video and text tutorials available.

Tip... when you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X is installed. You can find this information by clicking the Apple menu icon top left corner of your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.

  • My Mid 2009 Macbook pro (Just purchased) will not turn on after hard drive change and ram upgrade

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive.

  • Windows xp slow startup t43 just purchased refurb

I recently purchased a refurbished t43 thinkpad 1871fu1. Now I don't think its an issue of the machine being refurbished. Just mentioned it because this means I haven't had anything on the system besides factory preinstalled software. Now I dont recall it taking this long on startup on the initial windows registration. and I proved that, by reforamatting it and reinstalling the necessary drivers from the support section of the machine. I wasn't able to notice exactly when it started taking so long to boot. But after all the windows updates it usually starts, not what it is still.  but did notice a significant boot time after the fresh install of windows. and I believe it should always boot at that speed. I have a 4 year old desktop not much faster and it boots in about 22 secs, not I know all manufacturer are different, but if anyone has any suggestions regarding this particular issue on this model let me know I would appreciate it it.
one other thing about a driver after i intsalled the intel 910 driver. when the system started up the screen would blink on and off until i disable the intel driver on startup is this normal. im pretty sure it was the intel video driver. because it looks fine after i disable it from startup the display settings are fine.

I am not sure what would fix the problem other than starting over with your XP install from Boot Camp square one. I have no such problems with Boot Camp/Win (see sig). I might have given XP a bit more room to breathe. If you don't start over, you could try a repair install of XP--i.e., install XP over XP--like upgrading. Finally, you could anticipate where you want to start up to and make the "switch" before you start up. And, incidentally, do you have an XP startup problem when you've told, it from the Mac side, to start up to XP the next time? If no problem, the there is no reason to do a repair install of XP.

  • Just purchased refurb Macbook - How to backup apps

The Macbook seller did not provide an OS disk, it also has iWork installed. I want to back up the apps (in case of drive failure or catastrophic event). How do I back up the apps (and preserve install settings to avoid repurchasing the software)?

You'll want to have an external hard drive, and either use Time Machine (OS X 10.5 or newer) for backup, or make a clone of your hard drive using SuperDuper! or CCC.  I use, and recommend, hard drives from OWC as many of their cases use Oxford chipsets, which work well with macs.

  • Photoshop elements 10 won't accept my serial number on mavericks macbook pro just purchased

I just got a new macbook pro and tried to put my old photoshop elements10 on it. I used the student/teacher serial number sent to me by adobe when I purchased that. It installed ok and seems to run all the tutorials but when I try to actually edit it demands my serial number which does not fit in the slots and then says its not good. Since I can't seem to find an adobe contact, I wonder if any Mac users have figured this out.
    Mahalo,
    Gullygarden

Like the more expensive big brother Photoshop, PS Elements must be deactivated on an older computer before you erase the drive, or uninstall the app. You can use the serial number twice, but if you forget to do the deactivation, Adobe's servers are still counting that install against you. So if you've already installed it twice along the way, that would be one reason you can't use the number again. See here for some possible help.

  • I had my websites set up in iWeb on macbook.  just purchased a new MacBook Pro, downloaded iweb09, and transferred all my iWeb content.  I publish to local folder using filesilla.  why don't i see my updates on site?

I recently purchased a macbook pro with osx 10.8.3.  my websites are set up using iweb.  i downloaded iweb 09 and transfered my files to iweb, published to local folder, filezilla seems to be working fine, but when i visit my site there are no changes.  when i view published site the changes are there.  what is the problem?  can someone please help

If the files are in the right location on the server and you are sure they are replaced, then the only thing left to do is to clear the browser cache and reload the page.
    Standard procedure.

  • Do i have to purchase FaceTime for mac to use FaceTime on this used macbook i just purchased

Inputting my apple ID to set up facetime on this macbook for the first time, I keep getting the error:
"the server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later".
Any ideas what's happening?  (I can surf the web so i know my internet is functioning)

However, try this. Connect both your Macs, and restart from your old one. Launch App Store and see if you can download Lion.

  • I have just purchased a macbook pro. I downloaded two sd cards, one via lightroom 4 and the other via iPhoto. I can't find the latter card when I try to import via LR4. In fact i can't find it at all unless i open iPhoto. where is it?

Good Evening, I have just purchased a Macbook Pro, and have downloaded two SD cards of a trip to USA and Canada last September.  One via Lightrooom 4 and the other via iPhoto. I tried to import the SD card via iPhoto into Lightroom 4 but could not find it. I tried to find this "folder"? via other means with no success. however when I open iPhoto, there it is, so it must be on the Hard Drive somwhere??? I am new to Apple having decided to jump ship from Windows. Would be grateful for any help.

iPhoto is a - like Lightroom - Photo Manager. It's a database. Like any db to get data out you have to export it.
    File -> Export
and in this case set the Kind to Original.
iPhoto is a $15 app, LR is somewhat more expensive. As they both want to manage the photos there's no good usage scenario where you use both. Pick one horse and ride, essentially.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • I have just purchased my first Apple computer, a MacBook Pro, running Lion (10.7.4).  My wife bought her MacBook Pro six months ago.  I had data from my old PC transferred to my new MacBook, but, for some reason, my superuser ID comes up as my wife.

I have just purchased a MacBook Pro.  My wife's MacBook Pro is less than a year old.  When I start up my new computer, it thinks I am my wife and gives me the option of logging on as my wife or as a guest user.  How do I correct this misidentification?  Thanks.  [email protected]

This sounds like you may have migrated in Setup Assistant from her MBP?
EDIT: (Or whatever you migrated from the PC had her account data)
I also think you mean your login ID, not the Superuser, unless you've enabled root. In that case it would say "root"
Let's try it easy first. Create a new account and make it an Admin. Name it your name or whatever. This will be your account. Next login as your wife and move ehatever Documents you want from that account into /Users/Shared.
Now log back into your own account and drag the items from the Shared folder into your Documents folder.
If this works and you no longer need your wife's account on the Mac you can delete it in System Preferences > Users&Groups.

  • Just purchased D7000, Looking for advice MacBook Pro or Win 7 64bit

I just purchased a D7000 and I'm looking to upgrade my PC for photo work with Lightroom and Photoshop CS5. Looking for feedback from experienced users. What is better, MacBook Pro or Win 7 64 bit?

Its hard to get reliable information about which platform Lightroom is most likely to work best on, since Adobe would say "works equally well on both", and most individuals have personal biases that cloud objectivity (plus, the users just dont have enough data points to make a curve, so to speak).
I've used Lightroom on both platforms, but can't tell which is best, except:
The Windows version supports hotkeys for menu accesses, which makes plugin use far more convenient (Mac version does not). Also, some (not many) plugin functions just dont work on the Mac because of it.
Also (I'm a plugin author) there are some inefficiencies in the Windows implementation of the plugin infrastructure that make me wonder if the Lightroom software has a Mac bias under the hood - but I dont know. On the other hand, there are some anomalies in the Mac implementation of the plugin infrastructure that make it hard to program plugins to work as well - for example, edited text fields are not commited before a button click is processed, so having buttons that do things with freshly entered text can be a challenge - there are some workarounds but not always viable, and a plugin author must know about it, remember it, code for it, and test for it... And, Mac users need to be aware that they may need to tab out of a text field before clicking a button that processes the text...
Anyway, in the grandest scheme of things, I think the differences are relatively minor, and the bigger question is: Which platform do you want to use for "other" things besides Lightroom.
PS - There may be slightly more potential for problems on the Windows platform because of the larger variety of hardware and drivers which could have funny interactions, but these are the corner cases...
Lightroom works great on my Mac, and on my Windows machine (much better on new machine than older), but Aperture hardly works at all on my (relatively new) Mac (sloooooooow), yet others dont have same problem... - go figure...
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • My MacBook Pro just started to run very slow, what can I do to fix it?

My MacBook Pro just started to run very slow, what can I do to fix it?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Just purchased blue ray movie from store with a redemption code but will not download with out inserting disc I have a macbook air

just purchased blue ray movie from store with a redemption code but will not download with out inserting disc I have a macbook air

I am experiencing the same thing. I have many books that I used to read on my iPad.
Now on iBooks in Mavericks all my books downloaded correctly apart from two which I really want to work (The Lean Startup and Communicating The User Experience).
When I download both using the cloud icon just when it reaches 100% I get this message:
[Insert Book Name] failed to download
To try again, select Check for Available Downloads from the Store menu.
When I check for available downloads it says I have already downloaded all my books.
Anyone know how to fix this.
I do realise that this is only v1 of iBooks so I hope Apple sorts it out soon.
    Thanks!!!

  • I have a wireless network at home. I run my iphone and ipad on it with no problems. Just purchased a MacBook Pro, and now my wi-fi keeps disconnecting and i get an error message saying another device is using the same IP address. What does all this mean?
