PCI 7390 - MCA 7790 - Panasonic Motors

Hello,
We have bought the PCI 7390 and MCA 7790 boards in order to control Panasonic Motors. Specifically, we want to control the MADDT1207 and MADDT1207N servo drives for MINAS A4/A4N motors.
Our firs trouble is with the MADDT1207N servo drive, wich does not have direct conectivity with the MCA 7790 board. We have a 50 pin SCSI cable to connect the MADDT1207 with the MCA 7790, and it works more or less ok, but the MADDT1207N has a 37 pin connector instead of 50 pin. My question is, is there any way to connect them. Does National Instruments sell a special cable for this?
I use Measurment & Automation to test the boards with the MADDT1207 servo drives (the 50 pins one), and after some time to configure both, the MADDT1207 and the Measurment & Automation program, I am able to move the motor. Ten points for NI!! Its quite easy if you take some considerations. But what I am not able to, is to get the encoder data correctly. I know this data is transferred by the OA, OB and OZ differential signals. If I go to Measurment & Automation->NI Motion Devices->PCI 7390->1D interactive->Advanced Tab->Advanced Data group box, there is a field that says Encoder, and it ontly changes between 0 and 1, so I believe the data is being transferred, but the PCI 7390 does not understand MADDT1207. Looking at the panasonics manual, I realized that each differential (OA, OB, and OZ) pair must be terminated with a 330 ohm parallel resistor. This is my second question, does anybody know if I have to put this resistor? I measured with the multimeter and the pair is terminated with high impedance (no resistor). I tried to put a 330 ohm resistor in the MCA 7790 board (just between the connector pins), but nothing changed. I know the resistor must be at the end of the pair, but I would not like to solder the resistors in the PCI board if its not needed.
In the Encoder Settings in Measurment & Automation->Default 7390 Settings->Axis 1, I have disabled the Filter Fequency field, I put 10000 counts per revolution, and I tried with several combinations of Polarities and Index References Criteria.
In the Servo parameters I have:
44 (number of output pulse ratio) = 2500 (counts per revolution)
45 (denominator of output pulse ration) = 0 (wich means x4 (= 10000), is used)
46 Pulse output logic inversion = 0 (no inversion)
47 Z-phase of external scale set up = 0 (Z-phase output of external scale becomes invalid)
Any ideas? Does anybode succeeded with the encoder?
Thanks in advance

Hello everybody,
After a month searching the problem, finally I found it:
My new 50pin SCSI cable is broken: the pins 48 and 49, corresponding to the encoder signals OB+ and OB- were shorted. The cable has a label with the reference:
NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS 194604A-02, 50 POS MDR, 0636 12506
I used a standard 50pin SCSI cable and it worked fine.

  • Panasonic Motor usable with NI stepper controller?

    Dear All,
Kindly if you may advise if followings can be used with  NI  STEPPER  (non-servo) motion controller
    Panasonic Motor  MSMA042A1H
    Panasonic Motor  MSMA042A1G(with break)
    Panasonic Driver (Amplifier)  MSDA043A1A
It takes DIR / STEP pulsing signal inputs  (or CW /CCW)
    Many thanks in advance

    John,
I tried calling Panasonic.  The guy on the phone gave me an email address.  I don't have a contact for the Industrial division of Panasonic.
Like I said before, most likely our drives will work with your motor because we do support Step and Direction inputs.  Our boards also support CW/CCW input also.

Since the 6503 has static DIO you'll have to control the transition in software.  Typically, the determinism of software is limited to around 1kHz, but this is a function of your actual system.  I'd recommend you investigate our M-series line of Multifunction DAQ cards which all have at least one port of hardware timed DIO.
Low cost solutions that you might consider include the PCI-6221 or perhaps the USB-6251.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • Can i connect pci-7344 to my third party motor and drive without umi-7764 ?

Our Lab have NI pci-7344 motion controller and third party motor and drive made by other company.
We want to connect pci-7344 and third party motor & drive without umi-7764.
    Just use cable.
Can we succeed to connect them ?

In general it is possible to connect the PCI-7344 to a motor drive without using a UMI-7764 but you will loose some safety features and the level of noise immunity for encoder signals will be decreased.
Please have a look at this link for more information.

  • Connecting Yaskawa Sigma II Servo Drive (SGDH) to PCI-7344 and UMI-7774

    Hi,
I have  NI PCI-7344 and UMI-7774 and i want to
Connect the UMI-7774 to Yaskawa Sigma II Servo Drive (SGDH) , the servo motor drive is connected to the servo motor with original Yaskawa cables.
    1.  do you know if National instruments provide special cables to connect the UMI-7774 to the Yaskawa Sigma II Servo Drive (SGDH) ?
i know there is special cable to connect this servo drive to the NI PCI-7390
         http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5908
(you can find in this link that this cable exist: 50 Pin cable for connecting MCA-7790Y to Yaskawa Sigma II Servo Amplifier)
but this is not the case here, i need to connect the Servo Drive to the UMI-7774..
     2. Where can i find a tutorial on how to configure the PCI-7344 in MAX to send simple commands to the Servo Drive
i.e.  to run the servo motor from position A to position B (10,000 encoder pulses)
i'll be gratefull for any help
    Regards
    Moti

    Hi MotiM,
We do not have a cable that will let you directly connect the UMI-7774 to a Yaskawa Drive.  We do sell cables that will have the Dsub connector to match the UMI-7774 with pigtails to wire to the drive.  If you take a look at the product page for the UMI-7774 you can see the different cables listed under the accessories.
To perform a simple move in Measurement and Automation (MAX) is very simple.  In MAX under NI-Motion select your PCI-7344. Under this section select the settings option (by default it will be called Default 7340 settings).  Select the Servo radio button.  Initialize your controller.  Then you can select Interactive and 1-D Interactive and command your motor from there.  I have attached an image with the important areas highlighted for you.

  • Trouble positioning a stepper motor accurately (to one step)

I'm using a PCI-7344 with an MD7506 motor driver from RS. I'm testing angle sensors whose voltage output is proportional to (you've guessed it...) angle.
I'm stepping the motor round by one step, checking that it's got there by reading the encoder, measuring the sensor voltage and repeating.
My problem is that the motor sometimes 'hunts' around the target position. In closed loop (with an encoder associated with a motor) this results in sometimes not being able to reach the target exactly with the pull-in moves.
Using open-loop and reading the encoder directly I get better results because I can loop more times, but the motor will still 'hunt' around a target point, changing direction a few times as it over
    shoots by a step.
As there are a million MAX settings for this I won't list them all here, but I'm checking for a move complete when the InPos flag is set and I have a deadband of 0 steps too. I'm only rotating at 120 step/sec with a 10ms pause between steps.
Do I have to accept that stepper motors are only accurate to +/- 1 step or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike,
Maybe other people will have better suggestions, but in my case I can advise to either:
    1. increase the number of pull-in moves,
    2. increase the microstepping of your drive,
2a... together with a higher precision encoder...
Other than that, the accuracy is advertised to +/- 1 step, so maybe you would like to consider a stepper with more steps/rev.
Good luck!, I hope other people will give other suggestions.

    Langtian,
In general the PID control loop of the 7344 can be used for a wide
variety of control applications. You can use the analog inputs to
acquire the feedback signals and the analog outputs to control e. g.
torque, flow rates and so on. For temperature control the board seems
to be a bit oversized as temperatures typically change very slowly
compared to the high control loop rates of the 7344 but this shouldn't
    result in a problem.
Please note that the "Analog Reference" Output can't be used for
control tasks as this is a static analog output fixed to 7.5 V which
    can't be changed.
For more information about how to use NI motion control boards with analog feedback please refer to this link and to this document.

  • Does this 3rd party drive work with PCI 7356?

    Hi,
I bought PCI 7356 and AKD servo drive. However, it seems AKD can only achieve 15k rpm, which is lower than my target speed. I wonder if this drive, Analog Servo Drive S16A8 by Advanced Motion Control, will work with PCI 7356 controller. My motor is a brushless DC motor with 4-pole. I would like to run the motor at 30k rpm. The rated voltage for this motor is 24V and the rated current is 1.4A. The part number is BN12HS-13AA-02CH. I attach the spec sheet for the motor and the drive. Will this drive fit in my application? Thanks!

  • UMI-7774 Axis1 Inhibit input/output (and Fault +/-) to corresponding Servo Drive signals

    Hi,
I have servo drive (yaskawa sigma fsp) that i configured to work in Position command mode,
And i want to connect it to UMI-7774 with PCI-7344 also configured in MAX to work in P-Command mode.
The Servo drive has these signals:
    /S-ON    (Servo ON input)
    ALM+    (Servo alarm output)
    ALM      (Servo alarm output)
The UMI-7774 on its Control Connector of Axis1 has these signals:
    Enable
    Fault+
    Fault-
i read the umi7774 manual and also the servo drive manual, and didnt understand all the things because
the umi7774 manual named the signals Inhibit-input, inhibit-output
but there is no signals in this name on the UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector.
So, i think the wiring i need to make is :
    [Servo Drive] /S-ON   < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Enable
    [Servo Drive] ALM+   < to >   [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Fault+
[Servo Drive] ALM      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Fault-
is [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Enable  is same as Inhibit-Output ?
what about the inhibit-input, is the ALM+ from the drive is acting this role ?
And, because the servo drive and the pci7344 configured to P-Command (Position command) mode,
The control signals is connected in this way :
[Servo Drive] PULS      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Step (CW)
[Servo Drive] /PULS     < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Digital Ground
[Servo Drive] SIGN       < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Dir (CCW)
[Servo Drive] /SIGN      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Digital Ground
And for the feedback connector :
[Servo Drive] PAO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase A
    [Servo Drive] /PAO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase A-
[Servo Drive] PBO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase B
    [Servo Drive] /PBO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase B-
[Servo Drive] PCO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Index
[Servo Drive] /PCO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Index-
i read the ni-motion manual,pci-7344 and umi7774 manual and also the articles about configuring the Position Command mode
    including the MAX setting.
i finally start to understand the setting after i read the PCI7390 which is position-comannd controller.
i just need to know if what i write here is correct.
(The servo drive manual is here:
      http://www.yaskawa.com/site/products.nsf/products/Servo%20Amplifiers~fspsigma.html?openDocument&seq=... )
Last thing,  the  "How to connect the 73xx inhibit and command signal outputs to third party drives"  article
    (http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3442 )
shows that we need resistors etc.. to connect the signals between the servo drive and umi-7774,
can i directly connect the signals using Pigtail cables the National instruments provide?
    Thanks
    Moti

    Dear Vince,
this is the description from the servo drive manual about the following signals:
[Servo Drive] PULS  (Reference pulse input)
[Servo Drive] SIGN   (Reference pulse input)
[Servo Drive] PAO   (PG divided output A-phase)  same for PBO,PCO
i understand the following connection that i write here (for control and feedback)
from the PCI 7390 users manual (Table B-7 on Page  B-15 : CN1 cable pin assignments)
the table shows the signals from the MCA-7790Y which is accessory
for connecting the pci7390 to Yaskawa Sigma 2 drive (which is the same as Yaskawa Sigma FSP drive).
So, is that the correct connections for using the umi7774 and this servo drive in position command mode ?  :
[Servo Drive] PULS      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Step (CW)
[Servo Drive] /PULS     < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Digital Ground
[Servo Drive] SIGN       < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Dir (CCW)
[Servo Drive] /SIGN      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Digital Ground
And for the feedback connector :
[Servo Drive] PAO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase A
    [Servo Drive] /PAO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase A-
[Servo Drive] PBO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase B
    [Servo Drive] /PBO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Phase B-
[Servo Drive] PCO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Index
[Servo Drive] /PCO      < to >  [UMI-7774/Axis1/Control Connector]  Encoder Index-
thanks for your reply , i appreciate your help
since i'm alone in this, unfortunately i cant get help on this issue from anyone.
Please verify that what i write here is correct.

    Moti

    2) Get Encoder Reading
    3) If it is not equal to zero
    4) Move this axis to Zero Position(Homing) & Enable Home Indicator

    10) Move Axis to 0th Position (Homing)
Suppose,During Axis movement power goes off, then ideally Absolute Encoder value should remain same after system start up.
But,It is not happening. We are getting Zero for every time after Switch ON the system.
    {MAX Checking:Current Encoder Value=1500,if we send 5000 digital pulses to Servo in position control mode,it moves clockwise to 6500th position in forward direction.In second case,if we send -3800 digital pulses to Servo in same mode,it moves anticlockwise to -2300th position in reverse direction.}
I personally feel this problem due to initializing, when we are initialize Servo, that time it is writing Zero value or resetting Absolute Encoder Value.

  • Unable to set a specific velocity to a stepper with 7342

    Hi all,
my system is a PCI-7342 driving two stepper motors via an UNI-7774 in open loop.
The stepper(s) moved at the first try without problem, but...
Last week I was tuning the system with MAX, trying to find a specific velocity I need around 70 step/s.
With my surpise I noticed that it is not possible to vary at wish the velocity.
I was varying the velocity of few step/s but the effective velocity did not change with continuity.
In fact, the only two real speeds I've obtained are 63 step/s (for vel set between 50 and 70) and 79 step/s (when set above 71 step/s).
Is this a limitation of my setup or something I can solve by tuning some contrlol parameter?
    Some info about the system:
    OS: Win XP Home
    Ni- Motion 7.4.0.3002
    Max 4.1.0.3001
Board: PCI-7342 (but in max it says 7340)
    F/W: 68331: 7.31.3003
        DSP: 7.20.3001
       FPGA1: 7.00.3001
       FPGA2: 7.00.3001
    Thanks in advance,
    G.

First of all, thanks for the replays.
I try to answer to your questions.
@Brian: With MAX in the 1-D interactive panel, I set the movement mode in velocity, I load the desired steps/s and start the motion. Then, in the same panel, I read the velocity.
In open loop this is, I think but I'd like to have it confirmed, the frequency of the step/colck wavevorm produced by the controller, still at digital level. Is it correct?
    @Jochen:
    - Up to now I've used only counts/s. But from your question I understand that while I cannot set 45.5 counts/s, I can set a 3.35 RPM achieving thus a better ( < 1step/s) velocity resolution. Again, is it correct?
    - About the encoders, at such a speed, I get about 1 count/s. I'm working on an "hystorical" telescope and the mechanics+encoder system presents some periodic errors which are probably larger than just having the motor in open loop. And I wuold be happy, in this phase of the work, simply have a fine tunable open loop system.
    - Microstepping: the drive is not easily accessible but by harth i don't remember a microstepping control. I've to check
BTW, should I try to measure the step signal frequency directly at UMI-7774 level with and without motor? Update max and motion to a more recent version? I other words do you think I should investigate firts the digital or the analogic side?
    Thanks again,
    G.

  • Pull-up resistor R Series

    Hi
I am using NI PCI 7833R. I would like to raise the voltage from 3V to 5V. I have configured one DIO pin as an output and I have connected to it one resistor equal to 10kOhms. One end of the resistor is connected to the output of the PCI board and the other end of the resistor is connected to an external power supply (5V). I have expected to achieve 5V on the output but without success. Could you please give me an advise. I would like to generate a sqare signal from 0 to 5V.

Cool. I just checked out the specifications and it states that this card is capable of generating 5V signals, so you've probably found a pin capable of doing it!
Can you show me the datasheet of the motor you're using?
I assume you're using a stepper motor. You do need to supply a lot more current to it than is capable from the driving pin of the PCI card to get a motor turning. At a push you could probably drive a very small hobby motor directly from a power rail, but that's all. Motors require current proportionally to their size; larger motors require more current. Stepper motors the size of an apple for example require about 1A to get turning. If you check out the specification of the card, you'll see that there's no way of driving that kind of current directly from an output pin.
To increase the drive capacity, the motor needs to be connected to a Bridge Circuit, or a stage interface for the motor. If you look up the motor specifications you should see some examples on how to construct an appropriate interface with it.
