PDF/A Conversion Err :CIDset in subset font is incomplete & Character references .notdef glyphs

I was trying to convert some PDF documents to PDF/A-3b. Using Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows Vista PC, the conversion proceeded fine, but I noticed the size of the converted file increased from 1.91 Mb to  16.8 Mb (See spage usage audits below). I expected some increase in size due to the font embedding and such, but did not expect such a big jump. On Auditing the space usage, I noticed that the converted file had no embedded fonts, but the vast majority of space was being consumed by images. Turns out the "Convert to PDF/A-3b" profile in Preflight settings were set to convert all pages to images, if the regular conversion failed. I edited the profile to not do so, but fail on an error. This time when I passed the document through a "Convert to PDF/A-3b" pre-flight, it failed with the following errors.
CIDset in subset font is incomplete (font contains glyphs that are not listed). It appears to be referring to the Arial and TimesNewRoman fonts.
Character references .notdef glyph
How do I fix these errors? For the CIDset error, I noticed some folks in the InDesign forums mentioning you can locate the missing glyphs and then replace the fonts with other fonts in which these glyphs are present. I am wondering if this is the issue here and something similar can be done in Acrobat. As for the .notdef glyphs, I couldn't find anything. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron
Note:
If I edit the conversion preflight profile to allow replacing the pages with images on regular conversion errors, the conversion goes through fine, but as shown below, there is a huge jump in size, which I would like to avoid. I have about 2GB worth of documents, and the conversion ends up using over 8 GB of space.

What software are you using to do OCR?
Is there a way you can adjust what font is being used by the OCR software or use a different software for OCR? This is not  a standard OpenType font or one the can be mapped to Unicode.
I'm not sure exactly how OCR software places fonts in  PDFs. Does it show up in the PDF Properties under Fonts?   If so, what is the name of the Font.
When you examine the Tagged text in the Tags Panel, if you open up a tag and look at the content does it make sense or is it nonsense (gobbledygook)?
While OCR text is not visible to the end user directly, it can be selected using the text tool and it is recognized by Acrobat for tagging purposes.  The Assistive Technology, e.g., screen reader. will be reading from this text. So if it is not understandable you do not have an accessible file.
You would probably obtain better results using the Acrobat OCR feature, preferably on a Windows machine.  It's been a while since I've exchanged files between Mac and Windows, and I wouldn't trust that the encodings would be the same without testing it.

  • Interactive pdf form with text fields. Chinese fonts

    Hi All
    We have designed an interactive pdf with text fields. We need the text fields to be in a Chinese font. I understand that this cant be done in Indesign (change the inputting font to Chinese) I have moved the file over to Acrobat Pro and used the text property to amend the font to Simsun but when we try it out the font is still in English. Any ideas on how to remedy the problem??
    Thank you in advance
    Paul

    Basically, you need to create a pdf form.
    Add a text field to your form.
    There you can choose which font your want the text to appear in.
    The trick is, when you export from InDesign, in the "Advanced Tab" — set "Subset fonts when percentage…" to 0%, so the whole font embeds.'
    I believe there's an option in Acrobat to embed the font as well, but I'm not recalling what it it.
    But that will ensure the font appears correctly.

    While editing a scanned pdf, Acrobat will not recognize the current font & change to very different font. How can I choose the font I want to match the current document?

     Thanks for answering. The version is XI.0.10. I just did the update yesterday hoping that I could now properly edit a scanned pdf document. Yes, it's happening on most all scanned documents. I followed your steps & found the list of fonts used in the document & then attempted to edit. The same occurs. When I type in a correction, I get an error alert... "the original font (in this case Fd 5805) is not available or can't be used in editing. Acrobat is using the font Minion Pro in its place."
    When I select the text & right click as you suggested, my only choices are cut, copy, delete or select all, no "edit text".
    I have no other options to choose another font. Thanks for any help you can direct my way.

    NOTE: This issue was originally reported Oct. 5, 2010, against Reader 9.4.0:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/3186827

         Segmentation fault
    Adobe Reader 9.3.4 works just fine doing such PDF->PostScript conversions.

    Sounds like a file association issue in Windows. Right click on the files of interest and select Open With>Choose Default Program and select the program you want used (be sure the "always use" box is checked. The Acrobat installation should not have done this change, but this is the process to make the change on each file type.

    How do I convert PDF/JPEG file in "Brush Script MT" font to Word Document? (I checked with Acrobat XI pro but no use

    You cannot in Adobe Reader. You can try in Acrobat, but first you must try to run OCR (Text Recognition). I have never tried OCR on a script font.

  • Controlling Font Size in Character Mode Reports

    Hi,
    The default Font size of Character mode Reports is 12. I want to reduce the font size from 12 to 8 .How to go about it.The printer codes mentioned in reports Documentation only talk about other attributes like Bold etc.Also the documentation gave the impression that The fontsize can only be controlled for Bitmap reports.Kindly help me out.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Deepak

    Deepak:
    The font size for character reports is based in the printer size characters, there are: 10, 12 15 20 etc.
    I believe that you want is a smaller character, try to configure your printer with condensed font in the panel of the printer, if you can't do that, try send printer codes to the printer via printer definition file.
    For the printer code that you need, check the user's manual of the printer to know what code is that you need.
    Look for commands in your manual
    Good luck.

  • Exporting file to pdf from internet, the document its in blank or incomplete

    When i export a file to pdf from internet, the document is in blank or incomplete. Its the same if i donwload in a PC or opening online. The trouble is only in this PC, and i try with diferent browsers.
    I try deleting temporary files, upgrading a latest version of Reader and modifying the security configuration in the browser.
    Any idea?

    Hi da23841142,
    What are you using to export the file to PDF? Or, are you simply downloading a PDF file from the Internet, and then trying to view it in Reader? What version of Reader are you using, and are you on Mac OS or Windows?

  • How do I export/save a PDF using subset fonts?

    Products used to export from include InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Word. THX!

    Look for the settings in each of those products, since each one has an entirely different way of making files. If it doesn't offer the option, either it can't do it, or it always does it. More recent, sophisticated software is most likely to always do it.

  • Smartforms - Convert to PDF always displying bold, ignoring styles and font

    Hi out there,
    I'm not new to smartforms. But after creating a new form within a new style I'm not able to design it.
    But mayby it's designed correctly and only pdf conversion failed?
    The courios thing is, that sometimes (hleve font is replayced with standard courier) and all the fonts are displayed in BOLD.
    I also tried with standard sap styles, like hrforms etc...but the text is always displayed in BOLD.
    I just wanna use helve 10,12 px bold and non bold. I'm sure, that the fonts are setr up with se73, cause i have used them in an other form and they never did any problems.

  • Unable to subset font in report

    Hi!
    When I launch the UNIX rwclient command against my Reports Server I get a pdf output file, but the Acrobat Reader always
    gives me an error saying that there was a problem reading the document (110).
    The command I used was:
    rwclient report=my_report.rdf userid=me/mypwd@mydb server=repserverofmine desformat=pdf destype=file pdfembed=no
    The [ PDF:Subset  ] section in the uifont.ali file in $ORACLE_HOME/guicommon9/tk90/admin reads
    helvetica...Bold.. = "courbd.ttf"
    helvetica..... = "cour.ttf"
    Everything under [ PDF:Embed ] and [ PDF ] ist out-commented and the above mentioned TTF files have been copied from
    the WINNT\Fonts - directory into the UNIX-directory $ORACLE_HOME/reports/samples/demo, which is part of my client's REPORTS_PATH.
    I haven't changed the mapping section [ Global ], so an aliasing of the arial font to helvetica is done here.
    BTY: Another uifont.ali file can be found under $ORACLE_HOME/guicommon9/tk90/mesg , but I assume it's the one I mentioned
    before which is the relevant, right?
    The original my_report.rdf has arial font in it and was created on a Windows machine.
    My intention is to subset the arial font, so the arial font gets included with the generated pdf output file.
    Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?
    Thanks in advance!
    BiL

    Hi Leo
    You must still have an entry in the [Global] section to alias Arial to helvetica:
    [Global]
    Arial=helvetica
    This ensures that all the instances of Arial font is globally aliased to helvetica font. So that your entry in [PDF:Subset] section takes effect which in turn will subset Arial font for all the instances of helvetica font.
    Try to open the PDF file in a text editor to see if the font is indeed subset. Look for an entry called /CharProcs. If it exists and you cannot open PDF file in Acrobat, you can more or less assume that this is a bug on Reports. Contact Oracle Support to get the issue resolved.

  • Getting font name for Type 1 subsetted font

    Hi,
    The attached PDF contains some subsetted  Type1 fonts.
    When I use the   function PDEFontGetAttrs and  get the PDEFontAttrs::name, I am getting the font name as   "GPCDOB+NewBaskerville-Roman".
    What function should I use to get the original font name and not the subset name ?  In the above example, I need to get  “NewBaskerville-Roman".
    I use the following piece of code to get font name:
    PDEFontAttrs fontAttrRec;
    PDEFontGetAttrs (font, &fontAttrRec, sizeof(PDEFontAttrs));
    strcpy_s(fontName,100,ASAtomGetString(fontAttrRec.name));
    fontName I get is    "GPCDOB+NewBaskerville-Roman".
