PDF Export Looks Good at 150% Zoom, but Bad on 100%

Hi,
I'm extremely new to InDesign, and am trying to make a colourful resume/portfolio design using ID, but am running into an issue already with exporting via PDF.
The original issue was that the logo (which has my name and occupation(s)) were coming out SUPER blurry as a PSD I "placed" in the ID document (I tried PNG and Photoshop PDF as well, to no improvement).  After a lot of struggling with export options, I went back to PhotoShop and changed the PSD from 72 ppi to 300 ppi, which increased the dimensions of the PSD but improved the quality significantly.
However, now I find that the PDF file looks great in Acrobat on larger zooms (150% and 200%), but bad on 100% (where it seems like it's being "downscaled," so the smaller text looks awfully compressed).  I've experimented with ppi's in between (240, 180, etc), but it ends up becoming "blurry" at 100%, like the 72 ppi setting.
Any ideas on how I can fix this so the logo looks crisp at 100% on a PDF export?
Thanks,
RTL

Hi Willi,
I tried a PNG once earlier (when I was still trying to fix the 72 ppi logo), but since it had no improvement, I abandoned the PNG way before (it's a PSD in those screenshots above).
The PSD is still layered in Photoshop.  I took your advice and imported it into Illustrator, and saved as an AI file, and then placed that in the ID, but it wasn't an improvement.  I notice that everything (including text I wrote in ID) looks far superior on 150% zoom in Acrobat, and perfect on 200%, but 100% seems to downscale all of the content (except the background).
Thanks!

• PDF exports look terrible - white lines in text

I have been u sing indesign for years and years all of the sudden my pdf exports look terrible. The images are pixelated and the text has white lines
in it.
I used these pdf previews for my clients and I certainly cant use what Im getting from INDD right now. I have no idea what happened to cuase this.
Wish I could show you but any ideas would be great.
The following text has no formatting on it yet there are pixelated white lines? help?
Thanks in advance.

Wow - thank you for all the responses. Yes it still happened with different fonts, different sizes of font etc... So I looked at my export settings and noticed that it was set to High Quality Print - Modified. I Switched it back to High Quality Print and it appear to have cleaned it up quite a bit.
Thank you all for your speedy responses.

• MOV looks good in QT player but not DVDSP !

I exported a MOV from FCP using Apple ProRes 422(HQ) (my best choice I reckon) and it looked pretty sharp when I viewed it externally in Quicktime player. So, I was quite pleased.
However, when I imported into DVDSP and simulated it, the text (for example) looks poorer quality. And, having burned a disc and looked at it on a TV, the text still looks and other images still lack quality.
Why does it look good in QT player but not DVDSP simulated?

It's because DVD SP is converting it to MPEG-2 in order to put it on the disc. This will result in lower quality than your ProRes version. Also, if your ProRes version was HD, bear in mind that it will also be converted to SD for the DVD.
For best results, put it through Compressor first using the DVD 90 mins Best Quality setting with Dolby audio, then import the resulting two files into DVD SP. This will produce much better results than with DVD SP's default encoder.

• I've been giving HD videos in MTS format and convert the for editing in FCE.  Looks good in the program, but when I export the finished film, quality had been noticeable diminished.  Is there any way to prevent FCE from lowering the output quality?

Hello -
I've been sent HD footage in MTS format and converted it to Mp4 for editing in FCE.  It looks good in FCE but when I export the movie, the quality is noticably diminished.   Is there any way I can prevent FCE from lowering the quality on export?
Thanks.

>I use Foxreal video converter for Mac to convert the MTS using the Apple intermediate codec setting and the problem is that I don't get image, just audio
My thought would be to NOT use Foxreal video converter.
Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap.

• PDF file looks fine on the monitor, but paths bond in print in both PS and non-PS printers.

Hi,
I have a printing from Illustrator PDF problem. I've got Illy CS4 in which I have a rather huge file with a map and I'm tring to print pieces of the map. The PDF looks fine on the screen, but there are straigt lines on the print leading from one end to the other of two longest paths in the file.
The problem occurs when saving through Scripts to PDF, Scripts to Poscript in Illustrator CS4 (with all updates) and CS5.1. I also went to a friend who is using CS5 and a PDF made with it also had paths bonded. The problem doesn't occur when saving the file to a low version of Illy, opening it in Corel X4 and printing from a PDF made in Corel. Funny enough I also made a multipage A3+ print of an older version of the file and two of the lines showed up on the first artboard, none on the middle one and only one line in the third one (see the photo below).
Guys at the printers and more advanced Illustrator users I've asked for help said the've never seen anything like this and have no idea what the problem is. Accually, anyone I know hasn't got a clue of what the problem might be.

Any ideas of what I can do to print this properly? I'm pretty far from being an Illustrator expert and I ran out of ideas for fixing this and would really appreciate help...

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply. Print screen of the image I'm supposed to be getting in print, that is my PDF: http://imageshack.us/f/692/printscreenu.jpg/
In the first jpg below are the only lines which are supposed to be printed (marked in red). The problem is that apart of what I'm supposed to be getting in print (print screen of the pdf above), I'm getting the lines I've marked in yellow in the second jpg below and which are not drawn in my .ai file neither in PDF. They show up in print only.
PrintScreen of the whole .ai file: http://imageshack.us/f/833/wholefilewithartboard.jpg/

• Photo Stills look good on the timeline but awful during playback

Not sure what I did wrong. I'm doing a slideshow of photos and some of the photos look great during playback and some look pixelated. What is the reason behind this? I remember when I did a video the video clips were coming out blurry and I found a "trick" where I had to add a high resolution clip that would set the precedent for all other clips to keep them from being blurry. But this is with photos now so I'm not sure of any "tricks".
Any help appreciated. Thanks!

The best thing I have found to do, and it goes against everything in my being, is to use bing to do a search for "HD Photo of __________."

• Looks good in firefox browser but looks like hell on upload to my server

I created a webpage, used a simple template of 'header' 'content' 'footer', inserted an image into the header, inserted a table then image then table in the content, and nothing in the footer. it looks great when previewed with Firefox or Explorer. But when I upload it to my server it looks like hell. The image in the header is off to the side, my content is overlaying the header. the left side of the template is dark gray.  What could have possibly happened?

You may have forgotten to upload your .css file.
Without a link to the actual page, it's hard to say what else might be wrong.
If you uploaded your css, one thing to look at is the case structure of your files. Servers are CaSe SenSiTiVe, your local OS is not, so a link like " _css/one page with header.css" will work with a file named "One Page With Header.css" locally, however, online the link would break since the two names (one all lower case the other with "camel case" structure) would be considered different files by the server.
Be careful with file names for that reason. They really should be simple lowercase alpha numerics with no spaces (use underscores or hyphens instead).

• Layout looks good on large screens – but not on laptop

Hi, is there any specific reason why a website would look OK on a large screen and yet fall apart on a laptop (13") screen?

Hi, is there any specific reason why a website would look OK on a large screen and yet fall apart on a laptop (13") screen?
I don't know what you mean by "Fall apart."  Which browsers are you testing your site with?
If the page is oversized and centered, it will should appear centered on all viewports that are wider than the #wrapper width.  If the display doesn't support that width, your page should appear flush left in browser with horizontal scrollbars.

• My book looks good in Book Proofer but not on iTunes

Last month, I successfully delivered book content onto the iTunes book store.
Before loading the content, I did as suggested in the Publisher's Guide and checked the book's formatting using Book Proofer. The content appeared exactly as it should, so I delivered it to iTunes and it is now available for sale.
I purchased the book and the formatting is a mess -- nothing at all like it was designed or how it appeared when I checked it using Book Proofer.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way for me to fix it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I suggest you ask in some different forums and provide the title and details of what has gone wrong.

• Text looks good in ProRes422 but not Animation codec

I am doing a lower third in Motion and exporting the mov file to use in FCP.
The FCP timeline is in ProRes422.
If I export the text in Animation codec it looks jaggy and not good quality.
If I export the same thing in ProRes422 it looks good in FCP.
But, I can't get the transparency in the background with 422 , thats the problem.
How can I get around this?
In the past, with text, from Motn to FCP, I have had two video tracks with the same graphic and the top one was set to Travel Matte - Luma, and this gave me transparency, but my lower 3rd has a moving graphic element.
Can I export in Motion with 422 and somehow get a transparent background?
Thanks,,

If your sequence will not render to your satisfaction in the host codec and because text cannot possibly get any better than that, you're either looking at it improperly, have something set incorrectly (render settings in FCP? Commonly missed problem), or your expectations are unreasonably high. But I'm not watching over your shoulder, no clue what you're doing or why you're doing it that way. But I know that Motion's text and pixel output is beautiful so I've got no problem insisting you have an easily corrected user error, you just need to figure out which one it might be.
Might try Mark Spencer's articles:

• PDF Export Problems @ Printers - Save Methods?

I am working on a brochure that is mostly white text on black, with a few full colour pictures. There are also some manufacturer's logos that I inverted in PS to make them white on black too, all in CMYK mode in PS. Though there were still black boxes around the logo's they were going on the black background so I though I would be safe... I tried the "instant alpha" tool in Pages but the pictures are too low-res for this method to work effectively (it rounded all the points and made the images).
For the first proof I used the file>export>PDF>best method, and all looked good on my computer but the colours that were produced from the print shop (The UPS Store) looked appalling. Contrast was great on all the white on black text, but the colours were completely off. (however, there were no black boxes around the logos I was worried about, so that was a plus)
I did a fairly thorough web search of other print methods, and came across the file>print>pdf>save as postscript method that involved using Adobe Distiller to create the PDF rather than Pages. After getting a proof back from the print shop today I was pleased to see that the colours now appeared accurate on the proof but the black on black box problem around the logos I used now appeared and looked awful.
How do I fix? I'm frustrated and this matter is very time sensitive as there is supposed to be over 10,000 copies of this brochure printed by the weekend. Thanks in advance. : )

a brochure that is mostly white text on black, with a few full colour pictures. There are also some manufacturer's logos that I inverted to make them white on black too, all in CMYK mode in PS ... the colours were completely off.
The objects in the page are not colour managed coherently and correctly from the start. For instance, if you have Photoshop set up to disregard embedded ICC profiles, it will assign a default ICC profile for the colourant model of the object (a type PRTR Printer profile with data space CMYK for a CMYK colourant model object, and so forth), but it will not save out that object with the profile it assigned. This way you get what in the graphics model becomes 'deviceColor' meaning that the colourants are rendered by the numbers as there is no definition of the colours you intend them to form in the printing condition.
Classical case is of a graphic designer who misconfigures or disables colour management in a page layout application, places deviceColor objects, generates PostScript or PDF, and wonders why the gray balance, the tonal range, the highlight detail, the shadow detail - is different in each and every tonal image in the page. Always, always, always unify the colour management for the page. Capture and correct in a large gamut RGB working space. Place three component RGB with correctly embedded source ICC RGB profile in pagination, and convert into one and only one destination ICC CMYK profile for the intended printing condition.
The way you are working would produce similar problems in QuarkXPress and InDesign - it would not matter what make and model of page layout application you picked.
Hope this helps,
Henrik Holmegaard

• Crystal Reports for VS 2010 corrupts "some" Thai chars on PDF Export

Any Thai character that contains a symbol above it (like an umlat in English) gets corrupted when exporting a report to PDF, yet the same report can be exported to Excel or Word without any issue.
See the following character - once with a symbol above one without:
ล้ ล
The PDF file will not display the first character - instead it displays the second character overlayed on a box (like you get when the font does not contain the required character)
If I create a text field in the Crystal designer, it does the same thing - but when I right click and edit, it displays correctly - until I click out of the field when the problem returns. So this suggests the problem is before the PDF export and maybe with the designer - but then why does it work if i export to Word?
I have tried may different fonts - including those specifically recommended and used by the Thais, but all have the same issue.
My work around at the moment is to use Word instead of PDF, as I do not believe there is a configuration change I can make that will resolve the issue, but would love to hear otherwise.
I am using Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 version 13 running on Windows 7 x64. I have a beta 2 download of v14, but it requires a key code which i do not have, so as yet ahave been unable to verify if this issue is resolved in that version.
if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know
Cheers
Jed

Thanks Don,
(Good to know that version 13 I am running is the correct one)
I have tried many UTF-8 fonts, with largely similar results, but this testing here is with Cordia New - a font largely aimed at Thai Language and the one our Thai customers always use.
I have confirmed that right click and export from the IDE still shows the box on certain characters - but note that the box does not replace these characters (as would be the case if they were missing) but rather overlays them - which is why my subject includes the word 'corrupt'
All testing so far in on my Windows 7 development machine - so no user issues are involved
The code if fairly simple at this stage - define and load a data set - then link it to the report and use the built in export to disk functions:
                    OutboundSummary rpt = new OutboundSummary();
                    rpt.SetDataSource(outboundSummary);
                    string tempDir = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("TEMP") + "
                    string filename = tempDir + DateTime.Now.ToString("yyyy-MM-dd HH-mm-ss");
                    rpt.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, filename + ".pdf");
                    rpt.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.WordForWindows, filename + ".doc");
If anyone wanted to verify, here is a piece of Thai text that will show the problem
ผลรวมแฟกซ์ที่ยังอยู่ในคิว
To better illustrate the problem, the attached image will help

I am coming to the conclusion that perhaps these characters are not single characters - at least do not appear as such with each font - and perhaps Windows does some magic to make them appear correctly. I can see that Word automatically converts them to a suitable font - i.e. a mixed language text file imports into word with different fonts for different languages - and you cannot change the font to one that does not support the language. I can specify Arial from Crystal which does not contain thai characters at all - but export to word and they show correctly.
Crystal spits the data out and Word converts it correctly, but acrobat does not - so maybe it is their fault?
I have all language packs on my machine - and doing Chinese next suggests that even if I find a thai font that worked, it would not work in chinese, so am thinking word or rtf might be the winner.
Cheers
Jed

• Navigation looks find in IE & Firefox but not Safari. Help please?a

Hi,
I am fairly new to the website design world. I just created a website for a college class . I got the site to look great in Internet Explorer and FireFox but for some reason I am having a problem with Safari.
I am a mac user so I really want my site to run good in Safari. The problem lies with the navigation menu. As I said it looks good in other browsers but in Safari it appears to be longer than the rest of my page. I have tried to change everything I can thing of to get it to fit within the page. I tried specifying the #nav width, I tried changing it to auto. Before I added the scroll over drop down menu, it was fine. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?
Side note: When I magnify the page in safari I can eventually get the navigation to fit within the page...
Take a look. http://www.calihanchiropractic.com/
I am using CS3 & CS4. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this to fit within my page?
Thanks!

• How can I make my images look good when exporting to PDF document?

Hello! I'm struggling here with a PDF Brochure that I need to create (intended for web only, not print).
There are two images that look horrible and pixelated when I create my PDF file. I have tried everything, making the images bigger and smaller, using 72 dpi images and 300 dpi ones. Everything results the same way... It looks perfect in my InDesign file, but in the PDF it looks all damaged. Here are two screen shots, one of how it looks in the PDF and one of how it looks in InDesign.
Could you please tell me what I need to do to guarantee that the image looks good quality in the PDF? (My document is 40cmx20cm, I don't not if using cm is affecting the document).
To export to PDF I'm using the option: Adobe PDF pressets --> Smallest file size.
If you can help me I would really appreciate it!
Thank you,
Nataly.

Terrible idea. In a JPG the text will not be alive, you loose all interactivity.
And making JPGs with InDesign is not what the program is meant to make.
