PDF Print Menu on Macbook Air missing choices

I purchased a MacBook Air a few months ago for an employee and recently found that the PDF menu is different.  It doesn't have Compress PDF as an option. There are others missing when you compare it to my MacBook Pro that is several years old.  But the IMac which is a couple years old has Compress PDF.  Is this something that is only on the Air or is it something different on all new Macs.
I use this feature with both Word docs that I add pictures to and when I Print photos out of Iphoto so that the files are small enough to email.  Otherwise I have to make several documents or upload them to a site so they can be downloaded from, which is a pain in the ....
So the questions are:
Is this just common to the Air or to all newer Macs.  I'm about to buy a new MacBook Pro and would hate for it to not have that print option.
Is it an option that I can find somewhere to install or something?
I'm trying to figure out an Automator that I could build.  I import several photos to Iphoto and then add captions and print them using the compress PDF.  I also add photos to docs and then print using the compress PDF option.
Any info or help would be appreciated.

It may be using a newer Operating System changed the location of this option.
You can use Apple's Preview app to compress PDFs as follows.
Open the PDF using Preview.  Choose File > Export ... from Preview's menu.  Then click the "Quartz Filter" button and choose "Reduce File Size."

  • My HP Officejet Pro 8600 can't print from my MacBook Air

    Hi,
My HP Officejet Pro 8600 can't print from my MacBook Air. It keeps on showing "The printer is not connected", but the screen on the printer shows connected. I often reset the printer 'EVERY TIME" I want to use it. I also tried to turn off my laptop and printer several times before printing. If I'm lucky enough, it will work maybe for one or two prints. If no luck then I'll have to reset everything again. Sometimes I reset the printer, the printer will not show on my selection.
    This question was solved.

    Hello boojoo1tw,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're unable to print most times with your Officejet 8600. How is this printer connected? Wireless or USB? What is your operating system on your Mac computer? Click here to find out.
If your printer is wireless, then I would recommend assigning a "Static IP Address" by following this HP document on Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

  • I'm installing a printer on a MacBook Air via USB connected DVD drive.  The computer asks for my password.  I don't hink we ever had one.  Is there a default password ("admin"

I'm installing a printer on a MacBook Air using an external DVD drive via USB.  The computer is asking for my password to authorize changes to the system.  I don't htink I ever put one on the computer and "admin" and "password" don't work.  Is there a default password?  Or a way to change a password that has been forgotten, wothout resetting the computer and wiping everything out?  Thanks.

Many thanks.  As it happens, I wen to the local Apple Store today for an appointment with a "genius".  She helped me reset the password. And as I look at the screens on the page that you connected me to, they're the same as the genius used.  So your suggesstion was right on the money, and now I'm all set.  Thanks again.

  • I can't print pdf files from my macbook air

Hi, I am unable to print pdf files from the internet using my macbook air - I have the latest Adobe Reader, but still no help.....thoughts??

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Can't get my hp printer to print on my macbook air

I have the new MacBook Air and am trying to connect wirelessly with my HP Photosmart printer.  The printer driver is a supported driver on the new operating system, so I shouldn't have to download anything, according to HP.
I have gotten the printer to show up in the hardware area of system preferences.  When I try to connect to the printer it doesn't seem to recognize my printer (The printer utility just shows a printer with "unknown" next to all the data) and I get a "Printer is not responding" message when I try to print a document.  I followed all the installation instructions on the HP website.
This HAS to be an easy fix.  What am I doing wrong?

    Greetings,
Here's a direct link to the drivers you need, they should work perfectly for your situation.

  • HP Deskjet 3050A wireless printing problem with Macbook Air

Hello, I have a HP Deskjet 3050A printer that I have been using with my MacBook Air (2012 OS X 10.8.3) until a few weeks ago when it seemed to hang when trying to print and then say no printer found (even though it showed and was selected in the Printer options). So after a few weeks of this I decided to to remedy this issue once and for all by deleting the printer and 'refinding' it.
However, upon 'refinding' printer by adding it through System Preferences no printer is found - I have updated all Macbook air software.
All this time I have been able to continue printing wirelessly using my iPhone 4S and have changed no settings to the iPhone or 3050A which leads me to believe the proble the problem may lie with the Macbook Air?
Can you help resolving this please? Thanks

What router are you using?  Have you restarted it by pulling its power plug momentarily?
If that does not work, download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Restart your Mac.
    Finally, reset the printing system:
    - Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and then next to the "Use" pulldown, select the printer model (not AirPrint). Wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • How to change from two sided printing to one page printing on a macbook air

How do you change the printer setting on a macbook air? I go to print something and it prints double sided, is there a way to change that setting?I have an Epson printer that does air printing. Please help!

That would be a function of the printer settings. So once you call up the printer to print something go into the settings and change it from Duplex to single sided printing.

  • Printing from a  Macbook Air

    Hello,
Prepare for an amazingly stupid question.......
I have one of the new version Macbook Air's 13 inch version.  I also got the 'free' HP printer that came with it whenIi purchased it.
I have now finally unpacked the printer, and downloaded the drivers from the HP website.  I then went to plug the macbook to the printer to print..... But!  I don't seem to have a cable that will connect the two devices!  The only cables that came with the printer are the old style ethernet cables.  The only cables that I can find that came with my macbook (other than the power cable) has a USB port on one end, and the wider ipod/ipad style fitting at the other (and indeed these cables may have been from my ipad rather than my macbook, and just happened to be in the drawer).
So, how do you connect a macbook air to a printer??  Do I need a cable with a USB connection on both ends?  Should one have come with my macbook?
    LP

    Lucy,
I'm assuming this is a non-wireless printer, in which case you'll need to purchase a USB A to USB B cable, OR you could purchase a USB to Ethernet adapter and then use the included ethernet cable. The USB A to B cable is the cheaper solution, you can pick up a 14' cable for about half the price of the USB to Ethernet adapter.
    Cheers!

  • Trouble opening a pdf file on my macbook air

I am trying to open a pdf attachment that was sent to me.  I am opening it on my macbook air but it says it is not supported.  Can anyone help?

I would probably delete it first (I think there is an uninstaller) and then download the latest version from Adobe.

  • Clean install OSX 10.5.8 in macbook air, missing iphoto, imovie, garage etc..

    Hello everyone,
I just recently bought a used macbook air from someone, its a late 2009 macbook. it was originally version 10.5.6 but I wanted a clean macbook (as if i just bought a completely new macbook) so i erased and installed with a CD that apple sent me. But after i installed it it lost all the apps like iphoto, imovie garage band. Does anyone know how i can get those apps (besides buying them) ?
thank you for any responses in advance.

When you register the notebook, using your Apple ID, you should be able to download the missing apps from the the Mac App Store, provided they were included with the notebook when purchased new. If they were installed using a DVD, and never updated, you may have to contact Apple for instructions.
