PDF signature timestamp problem

Hi, sorry if this post is slightly offtopic.
We are trying to sign and timestamp pdf documents in java (using Apache PDFBox) and we are stuck with a problem for more than a week. The signature itself is good, Adobe Reader can validate it succesfully (after adding our self signed test root certificate to trusted certificates). The problem is with the timestamp. Adobe Reader says that the signature is timestamped, but the timestamp could not be verified. If I look at the Date/Time tab on the Signature Properties window the Timestamp Authority field says Not available. Older versions of Adobe Reader 9 displayed the Show Certificate button for the Timestamp Authority as enabled, and if I clicked it, the Reader crashed. In newer Reader 9 versions and in Reader X the button is disabled. It seems Reader recognises the timestamp but can't extract the TSA certificate.
However if I sign the pdf with Acrobat X Pro or with iText (using the same private key and the same TSA) everything is perfect, the timestamp is validated, Timestamp Authority field shows the correct value, TSA certifiicate is OK.
I analyzed the signatures and the timestamp tokens, but I could not find any significant difference between the good and wrong ones.
I wanted to attach a working and a non-working sample but I didn't find how to do that.
Could someone please give us some advice about what could cause something like this?
Can Reader log the signature parsing/validating process to view what's wrong?
Thanks in advance
Csaba

Hi,
I had the same problem with the pdf signature timestamp…..
The thing I was doing wrong was the SHA-1 hash sent to the timestamp server, more precisely I was sending the whole signature SHA-1 hash when I suppose to send the SHA-1 hash of the RSA encrypted hash of the digital signature (I think that in your case is the 256 hash starting from 1783).
Hope this helps you,
Corina

  • New document: How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems

Have you ever had problems with PDF attachments sent from Adobe Reader for iOS using Share > E-mail Document?
You may find this document useful to avoid the problems.
How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems
Please let us know if you have encountered different types of problems with PDF attachments.  We can look for solutions or workarounds for you.

Unfortunately, we (Adobe Reader mobile team) do not know if/when Apple will fix the attachment problems (software defects) in Apple Mail.
In particular, the attachment problem with Microsoft Outlook (See Problem #2 in How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems) appears to be a long-standing defect that has been known for years.  However, Apple has not provided any fix for Apple Mail yet.
Adobe Reader for iOS merely launches Apple Mail (the default mail app on iOS) to send a PDF document as an attachment.  Adobe Reader has no control over whether or not to embed a preview image of an attachment in the body of an email message, which is known to cause the problem with Microsoft Outlook (on the receiving side).  The same problem happens when you send a single-page PDF document as an attachment along with an email signature from Apple iBooks on iOS.
For now, all iPad/iPhone users can do is to avoid the problems by using the workarounds that are described in How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems.
When new and different problems with PDF attachments are reported by Adobe Reader for iOS users, we will update the document above.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Hi ,
There is an option of embedding index for faster search while converting email to a PDF .
However I am not sure that will serve your purpose or not .
I would recommend you to get in touch with Microsoft support as well .
Meanwhile I'll work on it and get back to you in case I get a desired solution .

Sounds as if you used Microsoft software to make a PDF. If so, and you didn't use Adobe Acrobat ($$), then you need to get help with Publisher -- Adobe Reader only shows what you make.

  • RSREQDONE TimeStamp Problem

    Dear friends,
I observed that in Table RSREQDONE the timestamp of fields (TUZEIT,UZEIT) is one hour behind from system time.
for e.g whenthe DTP load time in RSMO is 09:00 AM then the request load time in table RSREQDONE is 08:00 AM.
Can any SAP or OSS note solve this timestamp problem or time difference.
    Thank you !!

    Hi,
All the SAP backend tables will have timestamp in UTC/GMT time zone...i.e German time irrespective of your server time.  This is SAP's Standard functionality
    Thanks,

  • PDF Signature Error-Trouble In Paradise

I was happily using a form for my staff to use to request field time. The form contained 3 signature fields, which were all working fine, until I had to go into the form to add more objects, in an attempt to combine two forms into one. After I added the other information on the form. My staff can sign and send me the request, but I am no longer able to approve and sign (the second signature field), because I get the following messages in the order written:
When signing a PDF signature field component, results in the following 3 error messages after each other (text correctly shown, spaces and all)
    1) The FieldMDP expression for this signautre is invalid
    > After clicking on OK on 1), i get the next err message
    2) Creation of this signature could not be completed.
    Unknown error

    > After clicking on OK on 2), i get the next err message
3)The document could not be signed.
There was an error when attempting to commit this signature. The document was not saved.
    The save operation was cancelled.
PLEASE Help. My staff is hoping that I don't get this form fixed, because of the level of accountability the form provides.

  • Timestamp problem on electronic signatures

On time stamps for electronic signatures, it adds -05'00'.
We don't want that in the date stamp. How do we resolve this issue?
Adobe Acrobat X Pro Version 10.1.13

Do you get it in the Advanced Signature Properties dialog? What is the exact text?
Acrobat uses UTC time with the local time offset. This is what -05'00' means. It is time at the East Coast in USA.

  • PDF and timestamp

Currently we are trying to sign and add timestamp token to PDF documents. The problem is that the TSA (ncipher DSE 200) response is not valid,
at least Adobe thinks so. We have analyzed ASN.1 response from working TSA (also ncipher DSE 200) and non-working TSA. There are
differences in TSTInfo, returned certificates (non-working TSA response contains CRLs, etc.) and OIDs. We tried to eliminate differences but with
no success as some parts can not be modified directly, for example TSTInfo as the structure is signed.
Is there any way (tools, code or etc) to identify the problem in TSA response? How can logs be extracted from Adobe ppklite?

Thanks for valuable information, indeed RFC 3161 requirements are not fulfilled. We will contact timestamp authority and try to solve this issue.
Here is one more observation, this is not a problem as such changes we made are illegal; this just 'a thing' related to ppklite we stumbled upon.
If PDF file is signed + timestamped and just before moving timestamp data to unsigned attribute the timestamp is modified (in this case second certificate checksum is removed from SignerInfo/signedAttributes), Acrobat Reader shows that signature is valid, but with Signature Properties -> Date/Time -> Show Certificate it is possible to crash Acrobat Reader (9.1.3) on Win and Mac platforms.

  • Reader can't sign pdf signature field

I have a problem with digital signatures in Adobe Reader.  I have Adobe Acrobat 9.  I am including a form with multiple signature fields in a pdf portfolio.  This portfolio is circulated to collect signatures from users in different departments, some have Acrobat and some have Reader only.  I make sure that features have been extended for Reader. Most of the time they are okay.  But every once in a while (at least once or twice per week) I get a user telling me they can't sign.  No message or error of any kind, just a quick blink but no signature.  As a work-around I've had to save a copy and re-extend features.  This can be time consuming when there are a few documents I need to circulate.  Please help.

    Beto,
Just make sure that you application server's clock and the User's machine's  clock are properly synchronized.
Clock synchronization problem might also cause this issue. [Your network administrator caould resolve this time synchronization issue]

  • Adobe 8 Pro PDF Signature Errors

I have Adobe 8 Professional, IE8, and Windows XP. Whenever I apply my signature to a PDF file, it immediately shuts down with an Adobe Acrobat 8.2 error:
    Error Signature
    AppName: acrobat.exe
    AppVer: 8.2.0.81
    ModName: admplugin.apl
    ModVer: 3.16.128.32
    Offset: 000a7bf1
Any advice on how to keep this from recurring?
    Thanks!

    Hi Martha,
From Acrobat select the Edit > Preferences menu item and then select Security from the Categories list box. Click the Advanced Preferences button on the upper right side of the Security panel, and then select the Creation tab on the Digital Signatures Advanced Preferences dialog. There is a drop-down list on the top top this dialog and make sure it is selected to Adobe Default Security. Try and sign and see if that fixes things.
If that doesn't fix the problem move the plug-in back to the SPPlugins folder (just to keep everything together) and then move the entire SPPlugins folder to the desktop (really get it out of the Acrobat folder tree). Of course you want Acrobat shut sown while you're moving the files
