PDF text garbled

Hello,
I'm trying to find an answer as to why pdf files generated
from Freehand (via Adobe PDF printer driver) don't include text
that can be copied/exported etc.
The text is visible, and can be selected normally in Acrobat
with the select text tool. However, cut-and-paste copied text into
any other program doesn't work -- the text is no longer normally
encoded "text" -- but (at least on Win XP Pro) garbled symbols,
lines and returns.
I've tried both with True Type and Type 1 fonts, but same
result.
Of course, then things like email addresses within text
aren't automatically hyperlinked either (as they are from Word,
Ilustrator, InDesign etc) -- hyperlinks all have to set that up
manually in Acrobat.
In one way, this is kind of "cool" and makes the file
"encrypted" from copying by others without any security settings --
but is no good for PDF searching/indexing.
In the PDF font properties, all of the fonts get custome
encoded as an embedded subset, with "Gen_" (occasionally "Gen.") at
the start of the font name.
I've tried in Acrobat Print driver to both have "do not send
fonts to Adobe PDF" selected and unselected, but with same result.
Print Driver doesn't show any version number in its properties, I'm
guessing though it is okay as files from other programs don't have
this problem.
OS: Win XP Pro SP2. FH MXa. Acrobat 7.0.8 Pro. I've tried
googling for results, but nothing specific comes up. Some
discussion on "Gen_" named fonts, but no fix.
This problem has been around for many years, but now is
something I'd prefer to resolve as many pdf files I'm creating are
ending up online and need to be indexed and searchable. I've been
using FH since v5.5, but cannot remember in earlier days if this
was an issue!
I can post screenshots or example online if required.
Any solutions most welcome.

I've made pdf files using Acrobat about from version 7 or 8
(?) As memory serves the Gen-font problem has always been there.
This has also caused problems in eps export.
There has probaly been some remotely sane reason for changing
encoding and renaming fonts on print. I just can't figure out what
it may be. At least it is hard to extract the fonts from the print
file.
Hopefully Adobe will fix this as well as pdf export.

Why is the text garbled when I convert a pdf file to  microsoft word ?

    Hi amedah,
Could you please try converting any other PDF file with same fonts and then check.
It might also happen due to use of some poor fonts which result in garbled text.
    Is the PDF scanned?
    Let me know.

  • How do I remove a green background from a pdf text document?

I posted this question yesterday and received one reply.  I wanted to respond to the reply, but couldn't find a link or "button" to click on that would enable me to do that, so I'm doing it here.  As I'm new to this site, please advise me where the link is, if there is one.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that PDF was proprietary, with one "owner" and that PDF was PDF, so it didn't matter what program you had on your computer because PDF was universal.  Second, when I googled Nuance pdf, I was directed to this site, specifically the "Create, Edit and Export PDF's" section.  Third, I also have Adobe Acrobat with pdf and a bunch ofother Adobe products on my computer.  So, that brings me back to my original question,  how do I get rid of a green background on a pdf text document, so I don't use up all my ink when I print it.  Thanks for your patience and help.

I still use Office 2008 but have not encountered that issue. However, as Office is not an Apple product, I strongly recommend asking in the Microsoft Office:Mac forums here:
    Office for Mac
Everyone there is a Mac user AND an Office user, something you can't say about Apple's forums. You will get the fastest help there and I think you will find the contributors more than helpful.

  • Preview's PDF text select ignores columns and misses word spaces

I have a number of scanned pdf newspaper articles that I was attempting to copy the text from. Preview appears to register the existence of columns, as there is a pale blue background between the columns.
However when I use the text select tool, it completely ignores the column - and just selects across all columns. And when I paste the text into my text editor, it's missing all the spaces between the words, and the font size is always huge.
Conversely, Adobe reader in XP has no problem selecting by column, and the pasted text is also an exact replication of the original content. I don't know why Preview performs so badly in this regard? Anyone else experience any issues with pdf text select?

Anyone else experience any issues with pdf text select?
    Yes, and not just recently.
There is a reason Preview is named, well, preview. It is not an authoring environment and PDFs are not meant to serve in that context either...unless maybe you understand all of inherent the font traps, tricks & tips and how to tune your scanning/OCR software to keep rework to a minimum.
Scanning PDFs is always tricky, and without the occasional heavy metal to bring to the task, it just seems to be that more problematic.
Keep trying, but I'd really suggest to look to other tools at this time.

  • PDF Text Field Form Label

Hello everyone.  I was wondering if there was a way to make a label viewable in normal mode for a PDF text field form.  I am making my PDF a form with a fillable text box in it.  Well, I'd like the box name to show up when someone opens the PDF, not just if they only go into the edit form view.  I hope I'm making sense.  So far, the only thing I can think of is making a Button with the label above the fillable text box or make the text box a combo box.  However, with a combo box, I can't edit how the text will look when it's typed in.  Right now, though, when a person opens the PDF normally, the highlighted fillable text boxes show up but not the labels with them even though I have names entered in on Name and Tooltip.
    Any suggestions?

Oh my gosh... I feel like such a dork!!  I took a fresh look at it this morning, and the ONLY mistake I had was that I put the ending quotations in the wrong spot!  I forgot to include (Optional) inside the quotations for the label!
    I had this:  if (!event.value) event.value = "Company Information" (Optional);
    Instead of this:  if (!event.value) event.value = "Company Information (Optional)";
Oi!!  That was it! lol!  I'm sorry about that.  And yes, without those quotations, my text form fields don't work.  I hadn't seen your message before (until now) asking for me to clarify that.  I'm sorry!  That's the only spot I needed quotations.  If I don't have them, Adobe tells me that I'm missing characters.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!  I wish there was a way to give brownie points or something on here either than "Right Answer".  You have helped me so much and deserve a lot of brownie points!   Thank you!!
If Adobe is reading this, please give George Johnson a reward or something, please!  He was very helpful and patient with me.

  • PDF Scanned in a PDF Text document?

How can I convert a PDF Scanned file in a PDF text document??
    Regards

Unfortunately, you cannot change a scan into live text using Adobe Reader. At a minimum you would need Adobe Acrobat to run what's called Optical Character Recognition.
What I've recommended to people in the past is to use the drawing markup tools to draw boxes around the text they want highlighted then play around with the fill color of the box until they get something close to what they want.

  • PDF text pages in iPhoto books

I'm not sure that this is a problem. I just want reassurance before I click the ORDER BOOK button and buy the iPhoto book I have created.
I have imported PDF pages of text into the book, as I was able to get more control over the text layout that way. However, when I proof a PDF-text page, it looks more blurry and pixellated than standard, typed-on-the-page text, as if the resolution is not quite so high. It is perfectly legible, just a shade less sharp.
Is this likely to be a resolution matter with my printer, or will the text be marginally more blurry in the printed book's PDF pages, too? If blurry is the answer, is there anything I can do before ordering the book to get the text looking just as sharp on the PDF pages as on the non-PDF, direct-to-page, text?
    Many thanks in advance.

In PS under Edit->Color Settings Working Spaces set Grayscale to Dot Gain 20% and set the RGB menu to sRGB IEC61966-2.1. This is for future uses.
Now open each file in PS CS2 from withing iPhoto, go to the Image->Mode menu and select RGB. Save the changes, Command+S, and that's it. The photo will then appear normally in iPhoto.
Here's how to use Photoshop from within iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
If you ever do any scanning of B/W photos always scan as color.

  • Exporting PDF text to html

How can I export PDF text and post the exported text on a web page, to which I can then apply Google Translate?  Our organization post PDF articles from our journal.  (I can manually block and copy the text, so I know the text can be captured.)  I want a program/app/software to run on our website that will allow a user to extract the text from the PDF and display the text as html.  From there, the user can apply Google Translate.  So does anyone know how I can do this?  It doesn't seem like a difficult task -- I can do it manually -- but I want an app that will do it automatically.

Thanks for the reply.  Do you have any idea how I could do what I want to do, perhaps with some other software?

  • PDF Text Blurry Fuzzy... but only on one machine...

I could really use your assistance. When viewing a PDF, one user can see the PDF text with great clarity, but the same PDF viewed by other users, the text appears fuzzy / blurry. I've tried to massaged about every Preference I could (within Acrobat) and through Windows 2003, but nothing worked.
The machines (corporate image) are (should be) identical as is the hardware.
Has anyone successfully resolved this issue?

    Thanks for your help.
I'm using Aperture 2.1.4, sorry I should have mentioned that in my original post.
I've installed the RAW Compatibility Update nonetheless, but no joy.
I did a consistency check on the database and nothing came up. Then I did a rebuild and it almost worked. Luckily, I did this on a copy of the library. It removed most of my images from my library, but those that remained (which were a seemingly random subset of my whole library) were fine.
I'm now making another copy of the library from the Time Capsule
It's strange that it would be a problem with the database if it works fine on my MBP, don't you think?
    I'm out of ideas!

  • Why is text garbled and overlapped when I paste in Flash

Why is text garbled and overlapped when I paste in Flash from other sources. The documentations suggests you can paste and text will fill columns automatically but I just get a clump of text in a very small space.

Thanks a lot. It was the leading. It wasn't negative but it needed to be a lot higher. I really appreciate the help!!

  • PDF Text

    Hi All,
We are trying to write many lines in a pdf document and we are able to achieve the same using PDF text.
But our requirement is to create duplication of the written content on right hand side of the pdf document also using some spacing. i.e the left hand side and the right hand side content in a pdf document should be same.
For Example in a PDF document
    First                                 First
    Second                            Second
Inputs to PDF Text action block is dyanmic.
Kindly provide us inputs on this.
    Thanks
    Rajesh Sivaprakasam.

    Ok,
    I can imagine two alternatives:
You can use a PDF Table with two columns, and create a Illum document using the XML actions to fill the columns with the same text. You may have to play around with the table settings to get rid of the border and the headings to make it look more like a two column text.
If you do not want to use a PDF table output, perhaps you can use "tab" and "crlf" link editor functions to format the text and the use PDF Text output. Clever formatting can also make the text look like two column text.
    Hope this helps.

  • Looking for Simple PDF Text Editor

I have a very old laptop, and wanted a "simple PDF Text Editor".
Basically, just a really express version where I can open a PDF, edit the existing text on the document and then resave the PDF.
What's the simplest version without installing the Suites, or the full program?
Is there just a simple version available?

Adobe sells Acrobat Standard and Pro, that's it. Editing text in a PDF is not a trivial task, they're not intended to be editable documents.

  • How to change highlight color of PDF texts to the standard golden yellow on Preview app?

I use the Preview app to read my PDF books. I also read these same books on my iPad. When I read my books, I like to highlight the text. I'm used to highlight my text with the standard golden yellow on my iPad. When I use Preview, the only choice of yellow color I've found is a somewhat orange yellow that's called "yellow". Besides that, I see only 5 highlight options. Anyway, I'd like to highlight my text on Preview with the standard golden yellow, the same color that is available in almost all PDF editing apps. Anyway, how can I highlight my pdf texts with the standard golden yellow on the Mac Preview app?!

Here is a picture to show the difference between the standard golden yellow (above) and the mac preview called yellow (below - looks like orange to me).
Is there a way to highlight the pdf texts on Preview app in the golden yellow color, shown above?
