PDFs Created in OS X Can't Be Printed in Windows

(Scanned for this topic on the forums - it was mentioned once without resolution).
My office is a mix of OS X, Windows, and Ubuntu, so I create PDFs regularly, using the PDF creation tool in the printer dialog. The documents come from a variety of apps, including Pages, MS Word, OmniPlan, OmniGraffle. The PDFs always look and print great from an OS X machine. Windows users can open them and read them fine, but when they print the documents there are blank pages printed, or pages with only the header.
I know this is caused or compounded by the silly Windows printing architecture, but I was wondering if anyone else has hit this issue and what the workaround is. Would getting a real copy of Acrobat be better than the built-in PDF tools in Tiger?

Are the Windows users using a current version of Adobe Reader, i.e., either 7.x or 8.x? The reason I ask is because a couple of years ago, a vendor claimed I didn't send her a specific document. I re-sent it and even added the pages to another document. She still said she didn't have it (not receive it), but another addressee did w/o any problems. I was stumped, but thought to check the PDF (made with Acrobat 6) with an older version of Acrobat. Sure enough, when I opened the PDF in Acrobat 5.x the first two pages were blank. Turns out that she was using an older version of Reader and couldn't upgrade her company's software. I made a new compatible PDF.

In my opinion, yes. My understanding is the Mac OS print-to-PDF button is a one shot deal, i.e., no options to set resolution that I think might be high-res as some users complain that the file sizes are large. Acrobat Standard and Professional allows the users to set a host of options, e.g., resolution, security and compatibility with older versions. Acrobat 8 has several more versions available.

Save a pdf with security so vendors can only import & print but not extract?

We submit ads to newspapers all the time in pdf format...the newspaper imports the pdfs into their page layout program (Quark) for printing...currently we do not put any security on the pdfs because the vendors can not import the pdf into their page layout program Quark with security on.
Is there a way we can set security so the only thing the newspaper can do is import the pdf into Quark (or a page layout program) and print?
We would like to restrict the use of exporting artwork and copy from the pdf as well as saving the pdf as different formats.

Cannot open .pdf created by InDesign CS6, can open all other .pdfs

I just got InDesign CS6 at work (I use CC at home, but my company could not afford the CC subscription). I'm on PC with the minimum specs for InDesign and Photoshop Elements (also just installed). I have never been able to print to .pdf from InDesign; the program hangs. I have been doing Export to .pdf, press quality with my printer's specs. This has been working fine, except that, on occasion, I have to export the .pdf a few times to get it to open; it will give me an "either not a supported file or damaged" error message. Up until today, I have been able to export 2-3 times and would always get a .pdf that would open.
As of today, I cannot open any .pdf at all; I get that same "not supported or damaged" error message. However, if I let my computer sit idle for about 30 minutes, it will open. In addition, after exporting, InDesign hangs on a background task of "Export " 5" and I have to close out of that task to do anything further in the program.
I have read the forums on these issues and done what I can: I have installed all updates, backsaved to earlier Acrobat versions, exported to .idml, etc. Nothing helps.
I will confess that I am not the most technically-savvy person by any means. My company is small and does not have an IT person, nor is there a budget for calling someone in, so it is up to me and my admittedly limited understanding of this software to fix this issue.

You may have shown me part of the problem. I can't share one of the files I'm working on, as they're full of images and we have client protections that make sharing problematic, but I did try to recreate a new file with garbage text and graphics and that .pdf opened without any problem.
Could this be a file size issue? The files I'm working on are only 8,900 kb and 200 kb. That doesn't seem too large to me, but perhaps it's enough to cause a problem on my machine.

Indesign CS6 - interactive pdf with the hidden image can't be print out

Hi all,
I am creating a interactive pdf with "Hidden until triggered" function when roll over to apper and roll out to disapper and also selected a "printable" function (Button and Forms/ PDF Options/ printable).
The image can be print out when opened in very begining, but after triggering those hide image... those images just cant be print out!
Is it any way to print out the hiden image after triggered?

The info also scales down and even at 1200 dpi is not readable. Tried grey scale, graphics, general office, etc.

Could you please let me know what version of Adobe Reader are you using.
Was the PDF originally created using Acrobat or has been converted from any other format?
You can simply choose @8.5 x 11 size for the PDF under Print dialog box and check.
Also, you might change Print Quality of your file under "File> Print> Properties (Layout)> Advanced" to improve readability of your document.

PDF created from PowerPoint causes SLOW flattening during printing

Can't install printer on Windows 8.1 with downloaded drivers

Strange problem. I cannot install a printer to a windows 8.1 tablet using either downloaded drivers specific to this printer or with universal drivers. The printer installation hangs after I enter the port, and it hangs at "installing printer" Now if I use auto detect, it installs without a problem. The problem with that is we have specific settings that need to be set that are not available with the native detected drivers. It acts like it will install, because if I refresh the screen on devices and printers, it shows. If I then go to printer properties, in the case of the universal drivers, it will not find the printer. It gives the universal drivers printer search page. I have admin privledgesI am installing via remote desktop because they are at remote locations.I have the firewall disabled.Is there something I am missing? I did use pnputil -a *.inf

Why can't I print to Adobe?

I installed Adobe but I still can't print docs from dropBox to Adobe. My printer keeps showing up as the option to print to.

Adobe is a company which creates/offers several pieces of software,
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Dreamweaver
Adobe Acrobat
Adobe Reader
and a several more
Adobe Reader can open, view, and print pdf files but cannot create pdf files.
Adobe Acrobat can open, view, print, create & modify pdf files.
Installing Acrobat also installs the Adob PDF Priinter.
Did you install Adobe Reader or Adoby Acrobat?
Is there a printer named Adobe PDF?

Print progress window distilling into PDF

I am running an ahlar vellum cad product and trying to print to pdf driver. I am getting a print progress window burned into my pdf. How do I turn off the print progress window?

Adobe is capturing the print progress window and distilling it into my pdf file. When I view the pdf, the print progress screen is in the middle of what would be otherwise a good pdf file. It appears Adobe is distilling what is on the screen directly to a pdf file. How can I keep the print progress screen from appearing when I print to the Adobe pdf printer? This seems to be the easiest way to correct the problem but I have yet to find anything that would turn off the print progress window.

I need to create a PDF from InDesign that people can edit in Reader or Acrobat

I need to create a PDF from InDesign that people can edit (for example, change a name from "John" to "Johnny") from either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. I have already looked at forms, but they do not keep your font colors, faces, and sizes and just make everything that is selected as a text form Black, 12pt, Times New Roman.
Can anyone here help me?

If you use Acrobat pro, generate your .pdf file and then save it as (french version):
... so that anyone using Acrobat Reader (or Pro, of course) can modify the .pdf file (with limitations), add comments, ...
If you want to try to "protect" your .pdf file, you can try with this (in the "Préférences" menu (french version)):

How can I prevent Firefox from opening the file I create when I print a page with PDF Create! 5

After I print a web page using PDF Create! 5, Firefox opens the file so i can view it. Before I print, I select print properties and disable "view resulting pdf". However, the file is always opened in Adobe Acrobat, although I believe I have Adobe Reader set as default. I do not want any file to open. This happens on my non-privileged accounts. On my privileged account, the file is not opened. I have removed Firefox profiles, re-installed Firefox, Reset Firefox in Help-Troubleshooting. PDF Create!5 print screen can only be viewed in a host program such as Firefox, Libre-office Writer, or any other program that prints. They do not open the file either.

Thanks for your help. This is the Scansoft (Nuance) program. What I do not understand is why when I tell the print driver not to open the file with a privileged account, it obeys me. I am not sure where in the registry I would look for the information. I do not want to, but perhaps I should remove the Adobe Acrobat program (temporarily?) - then what would it do? Again, when I print from other programs - browsers, wordprocessors, etc - the file is not opened after printing, just with FireFox. I guess I can live with it, I have spent too much time already.

Can I retain PDF created form fields if importing back to indesign?

First time forum user here.
I have been trying to create an active form that would work as an internal approval form for any design job created in Indesign. I saw in other posts here that it is not possible to create this in Indesign so I designed my form in Indesign, created PDF & set up form fields within that Arobat file.
I now want to imprt this back into Indesign whilst maintaining the field functionality with the intention of it becoming a Library item.
Is this possible & what is the direction I would take to achieve this? I am not familiar with XML (which is what I tried but didn't understand what I had created).

It was a bit of a long shot - I was trying to cheat the system somewhat but yes, your response is exactly what I have been coming up with.
What a great function this could be though for Design Studios everywhere and more - Design Checklists/Client Approvals/Printers Notes that can be modified to auto-fill as per set fields. Can sit it in the slug and it would be a great reference point for any stage of the job (well that's my studio/production manager head talking - nice neat documentation... LOVE IT!
Guess I will have to rely on Acrobat to get me through.

Can not print PDF created on Mac with Acrobat (Win and OS X)

I created a PDF-File from "Pages", using the integrated "Print to PDF function" (OS X10.4.8)
This file can be opened and viewed with Adobe Acrobat on the same Mac and also on another Win-XP-Machine.
BUT: on both Machines (Mac and Win) it's not possible to print it. Only the message (translated in english) "The file can not be printed".
I also tried Print to PDF-X and other Win-Machines, but this does not helped.
Any Idea?

It sounds like there has been security added to this document. In Acrobat you can view the Security setting for the document by going to File > Properties (or Cmd D) and see if printing is allowed.
If it is allowed, then it might be worth checking the cups error log to see if it explains why the document cannot be printed. You will find the log in Applications > Console. Click on the Logs icon and expand the entry /var/log. Then expand cups and click on error_log. This will show the job you have attempted to print and any error as to why it cannot.
