Periodically "safari can't open the page" - not a ISP issue

Periodically I will have an issue where I click on a link and anything from the website cannot be opened for about 2 minutes. I get the following message "Safari can’t open the page “https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/” because Safari can’t find the server “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx”."
Here are some important notes:
I can access the website on my phone while the issue is occurring on my macbook pro
I can access all other websites
The issue lasts for about 2-3 minutes and all webpages with that address will not work
Any thoughts how to resolve the issue?

(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:  Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db and also clear your History)
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type  killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page. Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 and later appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML in January 2011:  http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html
The main reason I mentioned your ISP is that their servers may be too busy, which is why I suggested Open DNS.

  • Safari can't open the page. Log-in issues URGENT!

    This is really annoying.
When ever I try to log into say, Gmail, it displays this sign, even though they are all secure pages:
Yes, I have tried emptying the cache, resetting Safari and all that stuff.
    Please help ASAP!
    Thanks in advance,

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • You are not connected to the internet - Safari can't open the page

After wake up Mac OS X 10.6.8 from sleep, Safari 5.1.7 on Ethernet does not connect to web servers:
"You are not connected to the internet" "Safari can't open the page"
The issue disappears after restarting the Mac. Is there a way to fix it besides restarting?

  • Safari not loading "safari can't open the page"

I can connect to the wireless network but when i open safari it says "safari can't open the page becasue it can't find the server" other internet apps don't work either.

I have reset to WiFi manually and it now does not go into WiFi--It stays in Edge, unless I softboot it. Don't think I should have to do that everytime. It see the WiFi network and even has it selected in settings, but E is still show at top of screen. It reverts when iphone goes to sleep. This may be a problelm with new update. I just bought my phone yesterday 9.19 and it upgraded. Now I have these problems along with some others who upgraded. HELP,
Re Boot, Re Set okay, but it if reverts everytime, that is a waste of time.

  • "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server"

I just bought my iPhone. The first time I attempted to log onto my home wireless network (US Robotics Wireless Router) the iPhone performed perfectly. However, the next time I attempted to logon and surf it gave me the "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" error message. I tried a variety of things which didn't work. I called the Apple Tech Support. Turning off the router and rebooting it was the only thing that worked. I thought my problem was resolved because after cycling the router the iPhone worked great once again. But . . . later the same day I attempted to connect to the router and the same thing happened and I got the error message. I attempted to power cycle the router just like before but this time it did not work! Help! Bad router? Wrong settings on router or iPhone?

Do you have other wireless devices connected to this same router? Do they work?
I really can't help you much but to say that when my router exhibited this issue it was accross the board (all notebooks would connect immediately following a router restart, but would loss connectivity until I rebooted the router again). In my case the only solution that was permanent was to replace the router.
You may also try restarting the phone and the router, setup security - WEP - (or disable security) on the router and phone, and/or try a different wi-fi channel (may actually help).

  • Safari can't open the page https

Frustrating to say the least. About a week ago whilst in Google mail, Safari failed to open an email instead it opened a page displaying the message Safari can’t open the page “https"//mail.google.com" etc
A page refresh also failed to open the page as did a my attempt to "Sign out".
Later that day the same problem occurred when I was using my bank's website. Oddly, when I turned to Camino and it too failed to open Googlemail and the bank's site. On my MacBook both sites worked from both applications. Add if I use a different user account on my Mac Pro, I don't have the problem.
My account is a “Standard” user. A logout and back in and it works again, a reboot and it works again but after a couple of hours the problem returns:
Any help welcomed as the following steps have failed to resolve the issue:
    Empty Safari cache
    Reset Safari
Uninstall Safari 4.0 beta and re-install Safari 3
    Re-install Safari 4.0 beta
Swaped ethernet connection on my Mac Pro
    Verify Disk Permissions
    Repair Disk Permissions
Delete website history with "Adobe, Website Storage Settings panel"
    Reset router
    Rebooted Smoothwall
    ClamXav found nothing
    DNSChanger Removal Tool found nothing
iServices Trojan Removal Tool found nothing
    removed .GlobalPreferences.plist
    Thx
    John

    Hi John
Google Mail has been problematic on Safari 4. There are a number of threads in the Safari 4 Beta forum addressing the issue.
Thanks for posting the steps you have taken so far.
In a broader sense, security certificates are at the root of secured sites functioning. Those certificates are part of the Keychain file in HD>System>Library>Keychains. Perhaps, the keychain file needs repair. Open Keychain Access in your Applications>Utilities folder. In the Keychains Menu, select "Keychain First Aid">repair. If any errors appear, rerun until you get a clean pass.
If no errors appear, you may have to reestablish the keychain entries in your Standard account. Do you have administrative privileges assigned to that account?
Also, I'm not familiar with Smoothwall's operation/setup, however, some tweaking of its settings may be necessary. Here's some dated technospeak about Smoothwall and Safari.

  • Safari can't open the page because the server where this page is located isn't responding

so i try going to gamefly.com and when i get to the website it won't let me browse the website or get into my account unless i'm useing my iphone with 3g i get the error message safari can't open the page because the server where this page is located isn't responding i tried it on every mac i have n its the samething i clear'd out my cache and cookes and even used different web broswers n still the same is there anyway to get this resolved i would be much aprecited thanks in advance.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window:
    curl -I http://www.gamefly.com
Press return. You should almost instantly get several lines of output below what you entered, the first of which begins with something like this:
    HTTP/1.1
If there's no output within ten seconds, consider that a failure. You can then quit Terminal. Post your results.

  • "Safari can't open the page"

Whats going on?... I was about to "upload" a slideshow onto "youtube.com".
When I pressed the "submit" button in order to "upload" the slideshow,
I then get a message says: "Safari can't open the page"...
But, two days prior to this, I had no problem uploading another slideshow to "youtube.com".... it all had went smoothly..
    I'm using Safari version 2.0.4
And, this has happened previously, but not that often in the past..
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I do believe my problem is solved!...
Please understand this: What solved my problem may not work for you, unless you've had the exact same mathematic computer constipation as I had...
This is what worked for me!.... Either "youtube.com", or "Safari" could not read the "file" (movie format) that I sent to it!...
In my case, after getting this "error message" above, I then decided to send the movie in a "Quicktime" file (movie).....and this time "youtube.com" did accept my slideshow!... Super great!..
So far, I've only sent (uploaded) two (2) movies to " youtube.com"..
The first one I sent was from "iphoto", which is in the "quicktime" format, so I had no problem with that upload...
The second one I sent was the one that I got the "Safari can't open the page".
And, that one was an "imovie" , which little did I know, was the "wrong" format...
So, now, in order to not make my live miserable, I'll be playing it safe, and most surely will send my brilliant works of art to youtube.com in the "quicktime" format....
So, this solution to my dreadful dilemma may or may not work for you.
But, it may work for someone, I hope...
Good luck, and God Bless America!......
    Sal Pedi.....

  • "Safari can't open the page" messages

Since updating to Safari 3.1.1 (5525.18), I get an awful lot of sites returning messages like this:
    "*Safari can’t open the page.*
Safari can’t open the page “http://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyeBay&LogUID=19264405&CurrentPage=MyeBaySum mary&migrateVisitor=3”. The error was: “cannot decode raw data” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1015) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message."
Sometimes clicking REFRESH brings up the page, but usually the same message repeats.
    Any clues?

Question not answered but got tired of waiting so just marked it "Answered" to avoid the annoying reminder.

  • Safari can't open the page on mac

Safari can't open the page. The error is the operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted. Please help urgently. Thank you

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't fix this - Safari can't open the page

i am connected to the Internet and some website will open others won't, it depends. I keep getting the message Safari can't open the page. It is specifically with the links, I have tested this on my other computer and I can get on the website fine. I have been looking on forums but have not found anything that works? Any ideas

Go step by step by step and test.
    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.
        Start up in Safe Mode.
        http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204
    2. Delete Caches.db
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" from the dropdown.
        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
        Close windows and relaunch Safari.
    3. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    4. Delete Cookies
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
        Click the “Details” button.
Remove all cookies except from Apple, your internet service provider and banks.
    5. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite I am getting frequently "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again"

Since upgrading to Yosemite on my iMac I am frequently getting "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again". This is with both a WiFi and Ethernet connection. The server is working fine from other devices using WiFi onto it such as iPhones, iPads, MacBook (which is also on Yosemite) so don't believe its an issue with the server.
I am also noticing page load very slowly when this problem is not occurring.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Lion Safari: Are you getting grey "Safari can't open the page."?

    Hello all,
Ever since upgrading to Lion, I notice sometimes when I click a link to go to another website from the original article/URL, I may get a grey page, nothing loads but with a grey large Safari logo with the mesage: Safari can't open the page.  (smaller text) Safari can't open the page "http://www......" because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection.  This sometimes occurs when the server is busy.  Wait for a few minutes, and then try again.
I never have this encounter in Snow Leopard's Safari, or maybe then the page just keep and try and keep loading, while in Lion I straight away get this "in my face".
Is anyone else getting this too?
    Thanks.

    HowWow,
Yup, I'm getting it too.  I just posted a thread on the same topic:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/16077250
Hopefully this will get resolved soon.
I wish the error logs were useful, but for me ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter contains nothing for Safari!
If you get any answer, I'd appreciate if you update my thread.
