Permission problems in my newly installed hard drive from iMac 1 TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program. Is that normal?

Just got back my iMac with a brand new replacement hard drive through the iMac 1 TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program. With only apps installed, no files and fonts added, the hard drive already shows permission problems. Is that normal? The replacement hard drive is a Seagate again, ST31000528BAS. Do people like their replacement hard drive?

Just now looking at these... Last recall 2009 MacbookPro Video issues, I waited 4 years and it took 4 trips to apple store with video of the machine problems... Days and months past, finally with stern discussion with manager, got resolved. Now Drive recall on work machine... better take advantage now. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!
Should have thought of it... Have TM full back up... (will look into clone next time, now that I see this). Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH CRAP, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, "Oh, can't boot a newer system w/ old disk, that's why it won't read." PROMISES it'll be fixed, if you leave it over night... GREAT!
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... CRAP!! not running right... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still not solved. Evidently... either different account names caused problems... and/or they never restored personal "settings". Seems there are 3 ways to restor... Running Migration Assistant, Restoring after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM.
Can begin to make enough stink!! So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, liek having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! TICKED OFF!!!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you get your Mac after Apple has replaced its hard disk, they can give it to you with a blank hard disk or with Lion installed. I recommend you to make a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner instead of the Time Machine backup. It will make shorter the process of reinstalling everything again.
If it has got Lion installed:
1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and open Disk Utility.
2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to Restore tab.
3. Drag your external disk to Destination box and press Restore.
4. When the restore finishes, restart your Mac.
If the hard disk is blank, it depends if you bought your Mac with Snow Leopard or Lion. If you bought it with Lion, do the same but pressing Command, Option and R keys. If you bought it with Snow Leopard:
1. Insert the OS X disc and press C key when your Mac starts.
2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD in the sidebar.
3. Go to Restore tab, drag the external disk to Destination box and press Restore

Installing X86_64 Arch from a persistent i686 thumb drive

So what I want to know is how to install X86_64 Arch from my persistent i686 thumb drive.
I created the persistent usb because I wanted to be able to use arch when im borrowing a computer, or to use it to install arch if i get a new computer, or reinstall arch after distro-hopping.
I'm installing from the thumb drive to my laptop using the install script found at helmuthdu/aui script.
I want to be able to decide from the drive to install either X86_64, or i686. Where i'm having the problem is that I don't know what decides the architecture it's installing. Does it install i686 because my thumb drive os is i686, or is it something that the script is doing?
If it's because the usb is i686 is there anyway to circumvent that and install X86_64 anyway?

Not that I am aware of. If there is, I suspect it would take a lot of work to implement. You can certainly change the arch in pacman.conf to download and install x86_64 packages to the target device, this part would be easy. But you could not chroot into that system. I don't know how the chroot'ed steps could be completed from the 'outside'.
Are flash drives really in that short of supply? Or do you really not have any space left on the one you have to store the dual-iso and boot to that (many bootloaders can boot to an iso stored on the disk without having the iso "burned" to the disk overwriting it.)

It's easy, but not that easy. You need to copy all the info from the drive currently in the mac to the new one before you install the new SSD. You can do this by downloading cloning software (I use CarbonCopyCloner because it's free)

As Babowa says, get an external disk. You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups. 3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data. I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers. A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data. It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get. You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original. And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-)

The problem by hearing my voice when calling from iMAC

I use the latest version of OS X and iOS on all my devices (OS X and iOS 8.1.1 10.10.1). The receiving calls through iPhone 5 have a problem with hearing my voice when calling from iMAC. When make incoming, but also outgoing call through iPhone5 on my iMac, I can hear the caller, but he can not hear me, although tilde see sound when I speak to your iMac.
When the call using my iMac I can hear the caller, but he's not me.
MacBook Air while everything works smoothly, there hear me. You do not know me with this please help?

Problem updating newly installed Tiger (upgrading from 10.3.9)

Hi,
I'm having troubles updating my newly installed Tiger (10.4.3) to the newest version of it.
I tried Software Update but after checking it says that I have the newest available software (which is not true), and when trying updating from the combo updates available at Apple website, I get the following screen:

I've downloaded all combos, starting from 10.4.8 version until 10.4.4 one (which is the one I took the screenshot above), and all of them show the same error.
I've already restarted the computer, repaired permissions, disconnected my external drives, and still couldn't update my operating system.
I upgraded from Panther, version 10.3.9, using the option of “upgrade” with the Tiger installation DVD.
Could somebody help me out here?

No, I didn't, and my external USB hard drive was connected to the Mac when I was updating.
If no problems were reported by DFA repair, this

Beside repairing disk, I also repaired permissions once again, and there were no problems reported.
I restarted the computer, and still software update continued to say that I was up-to-date and the update combos I downloaded all showed the same error message from the screenshot above.
Will I need to reinstall again Tiger? And will the option Archive and Install work even if I'm reinstalling again the same system?

Cannot Prevent Drives From Sleeping - Yes Put Hard Drives 2 Sleep UNCHECKED

Sorry to post a tired old subject, but all threads seem to discuss putting the drives to sleep. I need the opposite. I edit with Final Cut Pro and my external striped drives are "driving" me crazy because they keep going to sleep every few minutes.
Yes, I have unchecked the box in Energy Saver. No luck. Any help or re direct to threads covering this will be appreciated!

Ooooh!! Gotcha. When I read your response, my mind went immediately to software. It's a Western Digital drive (actually, there are ten 2TB drives connected and four 1TB internal drives).
What I did not mention originally (maybe should have) is that I did not have this problem with the same configuration before. All drives stayed awake all the time. But recently permission and drive lock conditions forced me to blow everything completely out and re install OS from scratch (really sucked!)
Now, the uncheck doesn't work. The only thing different in set up I'm doing is I allow the monitor to power down after 15 minutes. I'm going to turn that setting off and see if MAYBE the OS is somehow interpreting that and associating the sleep function with it. Although, the drives still go to sleep right when I'm sitting here working even when the monitor doesn't.

How do I install CS5 on new iMac without a disc drive, if remote installation isn't working?

I purchased CS5 for my laptop (Macbook Pro 2007 I believe) and now have the newest iMac without a disc drive. I have tried remote installation, but it did not work. I attempted to copy the installation files onto a USB and then transfer them, however, the iMac then prompts me to insert the installation cd. How can I install it? Any help is greatly appreciated! I was signed in with download assistant, no just in at adobe.com... I've tried different perferences and settings but when I click on the links nothing seems to happen. I've been messing around with this for a few hours now and it dawned on me that it may have something to do with my internet. I live outside the city- totally nice for gardening, totally terriable for internet thus I have a verizon data plan and not unlimited internet, I think possibly verizon is shutting it down because of restrictions I have on my data. This type of thing also happened when I upgraded to Mavericks. The file itself was larger than my month's data so it seemed like it wouldn't initiate the download... I don't know for sure if it is the same problem here but if you're telling me that you are having more successful results than I am that might be the reason.
I'll take my computer to work or to my mom's house or somewhere where I can have unlimited access and see if I have any better success.

Moving hard drive from iMac G5 to eMac 700Mhz

Hi,
Hard drive in my eMac failed recently and on the top of that iMac G5 logic board stopped working (known problem). Now I wonder if I could move over iMac's hard drive (and Airport card) with 10.4 on it to my eMac. Is that possible? Or do I have to format it or clone it before move etc? How that can be done and what are my options here?

Thanks for clarifying on hard drives. I know emac hard drive is failing so I will replace that regardless. I just wonder what will be the best method to do that (I don't want use external drive for it). Regarding iMac G5 logic board; I have never seen that guide of Jim Warholic and I am appreciated for it. I have checked logic board but I am not sure if there is a problem with any of capacitors. What I have found is one of them look a bit bulge in compare to others; see pics here:

IMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program - how long does it take?

I started a new thread for this issue since the original thread has degenerated into a rant. I just got my love letter from Apple informing me that my new 27" iMac has the bad drive. I backup to an external USB drive using Time Machine, and I am planning to have my nearest Apple store replace the drive sometime in the next few weeks.
I am posting to ask if anyone has yet contacted Apple about this issue? I am curious how long it takes to swap the drives. Can it be done while you wait? Does Apple have any ability to clone the old drive's data to the new? Has anyone been able to arrange for in-home service as mentioned in the original thread?
Please don't use this new thread to rant about the problem. If you need to let off steam, please post to the original thread.

Greetings from an apple mac newbie in UK. On the one hand, after getting the email today I was disappointed to find my brand new shiny mac 21.5 might have a fault on hard drive, on the other at least apple points it out! But doubly frustrating for someone that has just taken the plunge and converted from pc/microsoft rubbish after two decades and still finding my feet in macworld....and who upgraded to OS X lion this past weekend without a hitch (nervous as an XP SP2/SP3 veteran)...and had to pay for Lion because I bought my imac just a week to early to qualify for free Lion upgrade.
My decision on Hard drive is to wait and see, firstly to guage experience of apple turn around times/customer experience etc in UK and secondly because I would like to understand what kind of percentage of the seagate drives are faulty...I am backing up with time machine, the machine is under warranty and applecare too, so maybe no need to rush, there's a year yet at least.
Another consideration for me is that I bought my mac with dual drives - the 1TB Harddrive for data and the 256SSD for OSX/apps...idea was to keep the programs on the ssd as it is fastest and is best with less rewrites, the conventional hard drive then used for big data stuff like docs, music and photos. This needed a bit of custom set up involving apple support to get the right things on the right drives, so am in no hurry to muck that up!
PS does anyone else in the UK have my mac dual drive configuration...?

Installing photoshop elements on imac with no disc drive

I purchased Adobe Photoshop elements 9 a year or so ago. I still have the installation disc and all the packaging that came with it. Unfortunately my imac crashed and I had to purchase a new imac. I would like to install this program on my new computer but there is no disc drive on it. Also there are no instructions included that direct installation without using the disc. How can I get this installed on my imac so that I can use it again?

You can download the trial version of the software from the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.

Can I install Aperture 3 on iMac with no disc drive

Is it possible to install Aperture 3 on iMac using product serial number (my PC has no disc drive)?

There is no longer a way to download a full version of Aperture from Apple's sites, other than the most recent version from the App Store. If you still have the installer disks, try to borrow an external DVD reader or ask a family member/fried with a computer that still has a DVD drive to create a disk image from the DVD. Then copy the Disk Image to a thumbs drive. If a Mac with a DVD drive is available on your local network, you could try DVD sharing.

Installing Adobe CS from iMac to MacBook Air... NOT!

Got my new MBA yesterday - beautiful. Remote Disk? Not so beautiful. I'm trying to install a new version of Adobe CS on my MBA using Remote Disk from drive on my iMac.
1. Installed Remote Disk software on my iMac.
2. Enabled DVD or CD sharing in the Sharing Preferences pane on the iMac.
3. Unchecked "Ask me before allowing others to use my DVD drive." because when it was checked my iMac never asked permission.
4. Inserted Adobe CS disk into iMac's DVD drive.
5. Clicked Remote Disk under Devices on my MBA.
6. It shows an icon of an Apple monitor and under that the Adobe CS DVD - iMac says "Connected".
7. Double click on the Adove CS DVD on my MBA it says "Connecting..."
8. Dialogue box comes up saying "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Adove CS3" cannot be found."
Why can't it be found? It show it right there in front of my on the MBA?
This is crazy. It's pretty obvious the the one thing people would be nervous about when buying a MBA is the lack of an optical drive and whether the implementation of Remote Disk would actually work. You'd think that would be the one part of this whole thing that would be bombproof. Nope.
Can anyone help? This beautiful machine soooo thin and light but it's kinda useless without software.

I've heard of Office working with remote disk so I'm not sure why you would have problems with that also.
If it's any justification, you need the SuperDrive to play DVDs or rip CDs. Remote disk can't do those at all, it's only really for installation of software.
Have you looked at Apple's technote in case there is anything there that helps?

Double-click the computer icon with the optical drive and click "Connect." If the computer that is sharing its optical drive has "Ask me before allowing others to use my DVD drive" enabled, click on "Ask to use."
On the computer sharing its optical drive, acknowledge the request by clicking "Accept."
