"Permissions Differ on "usr/lib/ruby" ?!

I'm using Leopard. After a recent startup problem with a Macbook I ran Disk Utilities, Verify Disk Permissions, and got the following message:
"Permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby", should be lrwxr-xr-x, they are drwxr-xr-x."
1) What does this mean?
2) Is it a serious security issue (i.e. malware)?
3) What do I do about it?
Thanks

"If you use the menu item "Go" and select the "Go to folder..." option, you can type in:
/usr/lib
and check to see if ruby is an alias or an actual folder. It should appear as an alias in the Finder,"
============================================================================
Ok, did that so I'll give you an long list of stuff I found, if you have the patience to go through it all.
Finder > Go > Go to folder > /usr/lib. There are 4 Ruby aliases (with arrow symbol) there: "libruby.1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.0.dylib" and "libsvnswigruby-1.0.0.0.dylib".
AND, yes, there is also an ACTUAL RUBY FOLDER (blue, no arrow) in usr/lib.
This Ruby folder breaks down into the following subfolders: (Finder>Library>)Ruby Folder (blue)> site_ruby > 1.8 > osx and powerpc-darwin 8.0 (two folders). In this "osx" folder there are 9 .rb files called active_record.rb, addressbook.rb, appkit.rb, cocoa.rb, coredate.rb, foundation.rb, NMOSXDockHelper.rb, qtkit.rb and webkit.rb. In the powerpc-darwin8.0 folder is a rubycocoa.bundle icon (like a lego brick).
The followinig actual folders (blue, no arrow)) are also present in usr/lib: dtrace, groff, java, mecab, openmpi, pam, php, pkgconfig, podcastproducer, sa, samba, sas12, sqlite3, system, and zsh.
=================================================================
"and the original folder is supposed to be in
"/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby"
You might also check that location to see if the ruby folder is there."
==============================================================================
Yes, it's also in this location. There are 2 main Ruby folders (blue, nop arrow) in System/ Library/Frameworks: one called 'RubyCocoa.framework', the other Ruby.framework. Ruby.framework > 1.8 > usr > (here there are three more folders 'bin' , 'lib' and 'share') lib > ruby. Here, in this ruby folder are aliases (site_ruby' and 'user_gems' as well as actual folders called 'gems' and 1.8. In 1.8 there are further subfolders named bigdecimal, cgi, date, digest and such which are NOT in the Ruby folder in usr/lib.
============================================================================
I have no idea whether anything in the Mac OS actually uses ruby stuff or not. Ruby is a programming language, and Ruby on Rails is used in web development.

By the way, I performed the Safari 3.1 update, Garageband Update 4.1.2 , iPhoto Update 7.1.2 , and Airport Utility 5.3.1 update two days before this all happened. I rebooted after the updates were fully installed, used the macbook (starting and rebooting 2 or 3 times duringthe course of the day, after which everything seemed fine). Two days later when I tried to start the Macbook I got a very long blue screen (in excess of 7-8 minutes) and had to try starting several times before I could log on. Then I ran the disk utility and got the Ruby permissions message. I've performed all the disk repair stuff and the message remains.
I searched the Internet and could find no other examples of this happening. So, questions remain:
1. Is there ANY possible way this could be malware, spyware, etc.?
2. Any ideas as to how this change could have happened on my system?
Thanks!

  • "Permissions differ on usr/share/derby"

    Hi,
    After some strange behavior on my MacPro I verified disk permissions and got:
    Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby" should be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x
    and
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Repair disk permissions does not fix the problem.
    Any advice aside from reinstalling Snow Leopard?
    Thank you.

    The “l” in lrwxr-xr-x stands for “link” and just means that the corresponding file is an alias file, whereas “d” in drwxr-xr-x stands for “directory” and means it's a folder. In Mac OS X 10.6.3, the /usr/share/derby file is an alias to the /usr/share/java/derby-10.5.1.1 folder, however both actually have the same read/write permissions (rwxr-xr-x).

    Does pacman just never update permissions automatically?  Anyway I just manually changed it with the following command.  Hope that was the right call.
    $ sudo chmod 770 /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/

    Directory permissions are never changed automatically. A directory could be part of two different packages, with each package specifying different permissions. To make the job easier pacman only warns about changed directory permissions. File permissions are another matter, they will be modified.
    You did the right thing with changing the permissions if the 755 wasn't set by you manually.

    This is one way and i hope it helps you and the other devs. But what do you think about that the systems can repair this by itselfs? On my opensuse server i have a tool named chkstat which runs as a cronjob and set the file permissions as loaded from a file.
    Source: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distrib … 11.src.rpm
    manpage: http://www.trinler.de/de/linux/man.html?command=chkstat
    The advantage from my side is that one or a group of devs define the file permissions standard for arch linux and everyone can choose to use it or to append own more or less secure/paranoid settings. Another sideeffect is that every dev can take a look inside this config file to see what permission the own PKGBUILD need so that in the best case we will not see such messages in the future. The source includes config files so there is no need to restyle this all from zero.

  • Recovering Permissions on /usr/lib - pkgchk or perl script?

    We have a SUN 280R running solaris 8 which accidently had a 'chmod-R 644 /usr/lib' run on it. The result was that on reboot, the system could not 'execute' or 'find' specific libraries such as ld.so.1 and some files associated with the veritas volume software we have installed on the system. We have been able to chmod most of /usr/lib 755 including ld.so.1. We would like to restore permissions to prevent any system stablity problems. so what is the better method to use here?
    1.) do a grep /usr/lib on /var/sadm/install/contents, pull out all the package names with an awk statement and then run them in a loop with pkgchk -fa?
    2.) Run a perl script which parses /var/sadm/install/contents, pulls out all the individual files in /usr/lib, and run a chmod <perm> $file on each file name?
    Which method would be less destructive? My concern is that running pkgchk on all packages associated with /usr/lib may 'fix' something, or modify something which would prevent the system from coming up.
    What key files in /usr/lib would prevent the system from coming back up, if permissions were incorrect? (i.e 644)? Should a chmod <perm> <file> for each file in the contents file for all files in /usr/lib resolve this problem completely?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

    Can anyone help me with this??

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
    One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
    So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
    NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
    You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.

  • [SOLVED] ldconfig: /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1 is not a symbolic link

    Hi. I use 64 bits arch with gnome and the ATI driver 13.6 beta installed from the AMD binary and I usually execute steam. Everything seem fine, but recently I receive a message when I update any package with pacman

    On my system, that file IS a symbolic link:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so -> /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1 -> /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1.0.0*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21K Aws 14 2012 /usr/lib/libOpenCL.so.1.0.0*
    [Aside: I know that the "Aws" isn't English but I hardly ever pass LC_ALL=C myself just because so little is translated into my interface language . Dates is almost it. ]
    I would try reinstalling libcl and take it from there.

  • GDM update: directory permissions differ on /var/log/gdm/

    Hello,
    Running Arch 64Bits kernel 3.9.9-1 with systemd and i got the following warning during a gdm update today:
    (1/6) upgrading libgdm [######################] 100%
    (2/6) upgrading gdm [######################] 100%
    warning: directory permissions differ on /var/log/gdm/
    filesystem: 711 package: 1770
    Why would gdm need some 1770 permissions for log files? Looks pretty suspicious to me, especially the sticky bit thing. What did i miss?
    PS: BTW the update is successful (it's a warning afterall, not an error)
    Thanks

    After further research i appear the way gdm is installed may matter.
    Well i installed gdm through pacman and always update it with pacman as well. Never manually compiled/make_install'd it nor used abs for it.

    Sincerely,

    Sorry!
    If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
    Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Disk Permissions differ after a day

    Hi,
    Just in the past couple of days my computer has been running very slowly. It has been taking 15 minutes to log in, so I fire up Disk Utility, Verify permissions and there are a heap of differing permissions. I repair permissions and the machine runs fine. The next day the computer is back to being slow. I go through verifying permissions and there are a heap of differing permissions again.
    My Hard Drive is farily full, I have 2 partitions, the Macintosh HD partition is running at 7gb free and the extended partition has 32gb free. I don't know if a full disk would be causing these errors.
    Here is a log of the disk utility.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    I have no idea but repairing permissions or not would not likely have any impact on the computer's login time (do you actually mean login as in entering your username and password or do you simply mean boot time?)
    If your computer runs slow look for other possible causes such as incompatible third-party software you have installed or corrupted caches and/or preference files. See the following:
    Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
    OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
    I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
    For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
    When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
    The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
    Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
    Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • Weird user/group in /usr/lib/*, pacman cannot "mmap"

    Hello,
    i'm getting some errors i really dont understand. I was trying out flash 10 (beta), which worked ok. The next day i tried to log in, but kde 3 didn't started, as stated in ~/.xinitrc. Besides that, loggin into console as my standard user and doing a "startx" worked. Next i tried to update arch, which gave me the following errors:
    (1/1) checking for file conflicts [################################] 100%
    (1/1) upgrading pacman [################################] 100%
    /sbin/ldconfig: Cannot mmap file /usr/lib/libtheora.so.0.3.1.

    /sbin/ldconfig: Cannot mmap file /usr/lib/libXfontcache.so.1.0.0.
    /sbin/ldconfig: Cannot mmap file /usr/lib/libusb.so.
    I looked up these files and found some weird permissions, users and groups for some files in /usr/lib. (I dont think "libtiff.so.3" should be ~2GB )

    So far this happend only to files in /usr/lib. Well, it could be, that the beta plugin from adobe messed these things up. But... how to clean this up? Would it be the best to remove all packages that belong to these files, then manually remove these files, and reinstall everything? Or is this some known problem?
    Besides that: I am using ext3 and i had a 4,3 GB file on my system that day, i tried out the flash beta, if that means anything.

    It is very strange. Run fsck on this filesystem and then execute
    find / -nouser -exec chown root {} \;
    find / -nogroup -exec chgrp root {} \;
    I think this should fix your problem.

  • /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found

    I am trying to run the firefox from firefox-4.0.tar.bz2 on CentOS 5.6 and get the error message,
    ./firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by firefox/libxul.so)
    Firefox does not start.
    I thought having a copy of the library in the local directory would help, so I made a link:
    ln -s /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.8 libstdc++.so.6
    then I got the error message,
    ./firefox-bin: /firefox/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by firefox/libxul.so)
    My version of glibc is:
    $ rpm -q glibc
    glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.2
    glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.2

    Yes, that led to my solution. There was a lot of noise in the two links, but some solid signal. Ths solution came from dietux's reference in /questions/777306 Bug 621704 to http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2075033 :
    1. Download the Fedora 9 package of libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm from http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/i386/os/Packages/libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm .
    2. Unpack the package in your Firefox 4 directory with relative paths (does not require super user permissions):
    [firefox]$ rpm2cpio libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm | cpio -i --make-directories
    3. Move the library and its link to the Firefox 4 directory:
    [firefox]$ mv usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6* .
    [NOTE: this is a RELATIVE path -- it has no leading slash.]
    4. Run Firefox 4:
    ./firefox
    Thank you for your help!
    Craig
    P.S. I do agree with the posters in [[https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=621704| Bug 621704]] that CentOS 5.x is NOT obsolete. The whole point of CentOS (and RHEL) is that it will be around for awhile. I left Fedora for CentOS because it changed too much.

  • Sapinst /usr/lib/hpux64/dld.so: Unable to find library 'libclntsh.so.10.1'

    Hi
    Using Oracle 10.2 , HP-UX 11.23, ECC 6.0 SR3. I am running sapinst with homogeneous system copy option. Database already restored and opened properly. Getting error during backup/restore step -creating the password file. Looking at the sapinst logs it says /usr/lib/hpux64/dld.so: Unable to find library 'libclntsh.so.10.1'
    The Library Paths defined are below:
    For user qasadm
    DIR_LIBRARY=/usr/sap/QAS/SYS/exe/run
    SHLIB_PATH=/usr/sap/QAS/SYS/exe/run:/oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient
    For oraqas
    DIR_LIBRARY=/usr/sap/QAS/SYS/exe/run
    SHLIB_PATH=/usr/sap/QAS/SYS/exe/run:/oracle/QAS/102_64/lib
    I have checked OSS Note 819829. Verified the path /oracle/client/10x_64/
    all the files look good. The permissions and ownership are all correct under /oracle
    The sapinst is supposed to install the client.

    Any idea experts why it cant find the library?

    Thanks. Actually its the other way round. The 10.2.0.5 you see is the Client version. The database is at 10.2.0.2. But thats not an issue. This is resolved now. Issue was sapinst was running with root and trying to start the listener and create the password file which I could do successfully manually with oraSID but not with root. Not sure why sapinst did not switch to orasid to do that
    Had to do two things:
    1) Set the correct environment variables for root (it was already good for sidadm and orasid bu must be done for root as well)
    2) Recreate the links (with ln -fs) for an older installation we had that was recently uninstalled.
