Persistant USB Instructions

Hi All,
I've been trying to install Arch Linux on a USB as a persistant installation. I was trying to use the wiki to guide me along, but in the Beginner's Guide it says to follow a certain link for installing Arch Linux on a USB flash key. I went to that link, which told how to burn a (an? if you say the "." as "dot" then "a" is correct, but I don't know if you're supposed to say the period or not...) .iso file to a USB stick. However, at the top of the page for installing Arch Linux as a flash installation on a USB stick, it has a link to another page which has the instructions for a persistant installation on USB. On that page, it says to follow the normal installation instructions, which in turn lead me to the Flash Installation instructions, which lead me to the persistant installation instructions. I'm going in a circle, and I'm not sure which instructions to follow for burning a .iso to a USB stick. Which instructions should I follow? Thanks for your answers in advance!

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … rage_drive says 'If you are installing to a USB flash key, see Installing Arch Linux on a USB key.' There you get https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … stallation: 'Follow the installation guide as you normally would, with these exceptions:' which links to the installation guide and not the beginners' guide, but that's immaterial.
What instructions have you followed and what went wrong?
Which part of the wiki redirected you to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … tion_Media ?

  • Questions about persistent USB Linux

I'm looking into several options for loading Linux on a flashdrive, to have a custom desktop on the go, but I have some questions:
Assuming I go with the persistent option(saving changes, newly created documents, settings, etc.), can I expect the flash drive to "wear out" within the year or so? I'm using a cheap, 1GB flash disk(probably from Walmart, but I'm not sure).
Would it be possible to do kernel upgrades for setups like [persistent] gOS on a flash disk?
    Thanks.

In Faunos, the data that you desire to save is written to overlay via squashfs at the option of the user when re-booting or shutting down.
The decision is made at a prompt during the reboot procedure wherein "session save" is answered with "yes" or "no".
Any activity which is not saved is erased from ram.  This permits the system to utilize packages downloaded during a session, running them in ram, and then dumping them at reboot.
Puppy utilizes a file in HDD or USB to record saved data.
The data saved in Faunos is written to overlay(s) and requires space in the flash device to accomodate increased storage.
I hope this info is helpful.............

  • Arch persistent USB / Installer dualboot

Looking to have a persistent install and a installer on the same pendrive for consolidation purposes. I'm guessing that two partitions would be necessary, and I'm thinking that dd'ing the image over wouldn't work like usual.
    Any ideas would be helpful.

I trust that you have read these:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … tion_Media
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _a_USB_key
Sure, you could have two partitions on it, but I don't really see any need, honestly. I have a 16 GB stick, partitioned as:
    – 5 GB FAT32 (for compatibility with "other" OS'es) with just some random cross-platform crap on it.
    – 9.9 GB Btrfs with compression enabled (less writes = flash drive lasts longer, and less data to be read = better performance) with a persistent Arch Linux install on it.
Syslinux is installed on the USB stick's MBR using this method, which is very easy to update when a new ISO comes out - I just copy-paste it from any OS that reads FAT32 (as opposed to "dd"-ing, which isn't that difficult either, come to think of it, but meh...). However, the kernel and initramfs images are also located inside the "Boot" folder on the FAT32 partition. This is a Syslinux limitation. Maybe with GRUB you'll have more fun: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … _From_GRUB
    Have fun.

  • Persistent USB Arch installation fails to boot after first shut down

    Hey all,
I've recently installed Arch on a 32-GB USB flash drive (with the help of the wiki, of course).  I have some experience installing arch on my computers, so the process went relatively smoothly.  As some background info, I AM using UUIDs in both the bootloader and the fstab file, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Anyways, the problem itself: I have arch installed and ready to go, and it boots up fine (the first time).  The thing is, after I shut down, if I try to boot the USB drive again, it simply hangs there-- no boot.  What's weirder is not only does it not boot, but it also freezes the host computer at that point in the boot cycle.  I mean, everything will be frozen up at the startup BIOS/splash whatever screen when the USB key is in, but once I take it out the computer will boot up regularly.  It's really strange.
If I reinstall the bootloader on the USB drive then everything works again (that is, until I reboot).
Is the bootloader somehow getting corrupted while shutting down?  I have tried using both GRUB and SYSLINUX (not at the same time of course) but they both behave the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time,
    Ushahin

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … nvironment
Here you need to set the right hooks if the root is on a USB drive, if you use RAID, LVM, or if /usr is on a separate partition.
Did you remember to do this?
If not, mount the partition(s) starting with the root partition first, chroot into it, edit that file and re-generate the initramfs. Then reboot with the reboot command, don't forcefully shut it down using the power button or something like that.
It could also be a BIOS issue. Restore its defaults, set "Removable Dev." first, "CD-ROM" second (if you have an optical drive), "Internal Storage" third. Then select the USB stick as the first to boot in the boot priority screen.

  • Arch Linux Live USB - On a Macbook

    Hey guys, here's my idea:
I have a semi-old Macbook (2yrs) and I have a USB Stick (Corsair 32GB Voyager) that I want to put Arch with Awesome WM onto. Once I have this setup I want to be able to just semi occasionally boot off my Macbook into Arch. I don't want to touch the partitioning of the internal HDD.
I have some ideas, but I figured I might as well get input and see if anyone has personal experience in the matter.
    Thanks!

    I have a ARCH testing with squashfs 4.0 Slax-like LiveCD/USB
and also a slightly older build using squashfs 3.4
    see here
    http://multidistro.com/
this is the newest and best
    http://multidistro.com/NFLUXNEW/SQ4/arch4.html
have no idea if it will run on Macbook
though the ZEN kernel has Mac drivers, etc
    kernel 2.6.34-ZENa32
Right now I only have a semi-working script hdd installer
and a manual-install method thats easy
it also can run as persistent usb like Slax

  • Installing X86_64 Arch from a persistent i686 thumb drive

So what I want to know is how to install X86_64 Arch from my persistent i686 thumb drive.
I created the persistent usb because I wanted to be able to use arch when im borrowing a computer, or to use it to install arch if i get a new computer, or reinstall arch after distro-hopping.
I'm installing from the thumb drive to my laptop using the install script found at helmuthdu/aui script.
I want to be able to decide from the drive to install either X86_64, or i686. Where i'm having the problem is that I don't know what decides the architecture it's installing. Does it install i686 because my thumb drive os is i686, or is it something that the script is doing?
If it's because the usb is i686 is there anyway to circumvent that and install X86_64 anyway?
    Thanks.

dtvanrip wrote:Does it install i686 because my thumb drive os is i686
    Yes.
dtvanrip wrote:...is there anyway to circumvent that and install X86_64 anyway?
Not that I am aware of.  If there is, I suspect it would take a lot of work to implement.  You can certainly change the arch in pacman.conf to download and install x86_64 packages to the target device, this part would be easy.  But you could not chroot into that system.  I don't know how the chroot'ed steps could be completed from the 'outside'.
Are flash drives really in that short of supply?  Or do you really not have any space left on the one you have to store the dual-iso and boot to that (many bootloaders can boot to an iso stored on the disk without having the iso "burned" to the disk overwriting it.)

  • K7N2-DeltaL USB Problem

I'm having USB troubles with my 1 year old MSI K7N2-DeltaL board (Nforce). I just recently reinstalled Windows XP and SP2 (both from CDs). I was able to get my Sony digital camera connected and recognized last night, but when I tried to install a PenDrive today, none of my USB ports worked at all. When I tried to plugh the camera back in, it didn't work either. I don't know what happened, and I'm the only one who uses that computer. It had been off all day too!
Another thing too. When I go into the Device Manager, the click USB Controllers, it has 6 listings of something like Unrecognized device. I have 6 USB ports in total, so I'm wondering if it's a driver thing. I've downloaded the most recent MSI drivers for my board, so I don't know what the deal is.
Any help is much appreaciated! THANKS!

HAHA, Wonkanoby! I looked at the USB link you have in your signature for about the 5th time now. I decided I should open my box and take another gander! Sure enough I've got that pin 10 deal going on. The USB instruction that came with my box said they had taken that out and I didn't even bother to look! I didn't know that 1 pin could disable all my USB! Thanks for your help, and I'll never over look your advice again!

  • No USB Hotspot in iOS 7.0.3.

    Hi all,
After installing 7.0.0 I had an ability to use hotspot via USB, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. After updating to 7.0.2. (and 7.0.3. as for now) I have lost hotspot avialability via USB. Please note that I can still use hotspot via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. I tried to delete the iPhone option in my Mac's settings and hoped that it would appear again. It did not.
How can I use my hotspot via USB again?
    Please note that:
    - iPhone 4, iOS 7.0.3. No Jailbreak. MacBook w/ MacOS 10.6.8. iTunes 11.1.2. (32)
    - my carrier provides the personal hotspot
    - tried to reset and reenter the cellular options
    - tried to reset whole iPhone
    - read the Apple tutorials i.e. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2756
    - tried to make some voodoo magic
Hope someone will have any ideas.

Does it still show the USB instructions under... Settings > Personal Hotspot?

  • [SOLVED] Borked my Arch! Hanging at boot...

Hi, I've been using Arch on my netbook for the last couple of months with great results until just now....
Yesterday everything was going great guns, then I booted a different distro (remixOS) from a persistant usb install. After a few hours I rebooted Arch but it hung shortly after entering init runlevel 3, whilst trying to start the laptop-mode daemon. I read about a laptop-mode related bug that prevented users from booting and, believing that laptop-mode was the culprit, booted into a Linux Mint live session and edited my rc.conf daemons array.
However this has not solved the problem, my machine now just hangs at "Starting crond daemon" with a [BUSY] message on the right hand side of the screen and the cursor frozen.
What should I do? I use this machine for school and I don't want to reinstall, I'd prefer to learn about the issue and fix the problem myself.
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this thread, I've searched extensively but haven't found anything that matches my problem and other threads about chrooting and init runlevels are too loaded with jargon for me to comprehend at this point.
Thanks for reading about my problems.

Well, my mind's a bit boggled. Sounds like it might've been from an update or simple oversight. I've had issues with mkinitcpio not generating the correct initrd--once from my own mistake (not updating mkinitcpio.conf correctly) and once from it running but apparently not including LVM even though I instructed it to. (I suspect the latter might've also been from an oversight on my part.)
Here's a thread that might help with the lib32-gcc-libs/gcc-libs-multilib issue.

Assuming your UUIDs are correct, your fstab looks fine. The only change that you might need is to set the pass field (last number) for /boot and /home to 2 (see fstab(5)), but that wouldn't cause your problems.
Unless the kernel is screaming at you, you may occasionally see some things on boot that happen to be harmless. No biggy. :)

I know that there is a quiet flag in my kernel options because I noticed it when I was experimenting with switching the runlevels via grub but I'm not certain where to find my kernel line, nor what constitutes "unsusual options". I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything for ACPI support but maybe some laptop-mode-tools stuff did someting, I can't be sure...
The boot looks fine, especially since mkinitcpio fixed your problem. "Unusual options" in this case would be things like turning off various kernel features or passing in options to change behavior--you'd know them if you saw them. You don't have them, so it's nothing to worry about.
Good to know that solved your problem. Don't forget to mark your thread [solved] too!
Edit: Whoops! I think you caught the [solved] before I did. Sorry! :)

  • Photoshop Pressure Doesn't work on Multitouch Tablet Pc's!

I have a Hp tx2z. Its got a screen made by Ntrig and not by wacom. So instead of using the standard wintab api it uses standard hid based USB instructions.
The Dell Latitude Xt and XT2 both use these screens.
I was told by the people at Ntrig that Adobe is in fact working on writing photoshop to read data from the Ntrig digitizer.
Ntrig has been very negligent during the whole course of trying to resolve this problem and I believe that they are blowing smoke. I don't think that adobe is working on this and am wanting to confirm this.
I love LOVE LOVE photoshop, I have spent years learning the software and learning to draw in photoshop is one of the greatest joys I have. There is no software out there like it. Will someone please contact me and let me know whats going on?
is there indeed a fix on the way? Myself and 10's of thousands of Dell and Hp users would be ecstatic beyond belief if we could go back to using photoshop. (currently no use in upgrading) This way we won't have to find another way or another inferior program to try to satisfy our artistic needs.
I hope to hear back soon!
    justice

No, I meant what i said,
this problem is two sided and we have two companies who can do something to fix the problem. One company is great, and one company is unbelievably arrogant. Ntrig I don't like. Adobe i do like.
regardless... both companies are loosing money and clout due to the issue. Someone on the good side "Adobe" can fix the problem just as readily as Ntrig. The first one to fix it has the most to gain and its not an overly large problem to fix for those with the know how.
I agree that Ntrig is arrogant and stubborn. Adobe I'm hoping with take the steps and play big brother to this problem and not little sister waiting for an inferior less mature company to take responsibility. We both know it is their problem, but adobe is still loosing out because of it. And adobe, you can fix their mistake and benefit from it.
Win 7 will likely find its biggest success off this digitizers multitouch setup. whether i like them or not, you can only help yourself out by updating the wonderful unrivaled software that you create to be even more flexible then it already is.
I can't wait to use photoshops brushes again. =)

  • Installing Windows 7 on Macbook Pro, OS X Lion

Hi. I'm trying to put a partition of Windows 7 on my late 2008 Macbook pro.
I've look at loads of information and video on Youtube on 'how to install Windows 7' the way I need to.
My CD/DVD drive doesn't work for reasons unknown, it was like it when I got it.
So I'm trying to install Windows 7 by USB pen drive, but boot camp won't recognize it. I've made the Pen drive readable (It's a USB-DVD). Plus, I can't download the windows support software. I've seen on some threads you can just put the installation disk in, you get with the Mac. Is this true and if so which installation disk do I use, snow leopard or lion?
Can anybody help me please. Can anyone do a step be step on how to install it or something? any questions please ask. Thank you.

Search online for "Install Windows 7 BootCamp no disk via USB instructions"
We only have information for BootCamp installs via the disk, not USB.
You may want to later look into WinClone, it's a OS X program that can clone a BootCamp Win 7 partition, however you have to have one first, (perhaps from another Mac) on a external drive to do so.
You'll have to revalidate with Microsoft on the final machine due to the hardware change if you allow it to connect to the Interent and update when it's first installed on the guest Mac.

forget iSync 1.5, 10.3.9 and the SLVR. i tried everything but the kitchen sink. there is, however, an answer. Onsync ( http://www.onmadesoft.com/index.html ) will work with your setup. you won't get calendar and to do list. officially they do not support the SLVR but i, and others have had success with it using a usb cable (be sure to follow the slightly wacky "Serial over USB" instructions. it works. $12 but you can waste many hours without any success. i happen to know.

  • MacBook Pro & Windows 7 Driver Compatibility Issue

    Good Day,
Yesterday, I was using my Windows 7 Bootcamp Partition in my Mac and found something odd about it. When I opened my "Devices and Printer" window, I saw that the computer icon has a small yellow warning icon (yellow triangle with ! character) saying that one of my Drivers was having problems. I opened my Device Manager but all drivers seem to have been installed properly. Anyhow, I right clicked the Computer icon and clicked trouble shooting and it is suggesting me to install a NVIDIA Driver other than the one that came in the Bootcamp disk. For now I have decided to ignore the computer icon since I don't have any visible troubles in my MacBook Pro. Anyway I would like to ask if these computer icons with warning signs are common in my MacBook Pro model or any other Mac.
Thank You for any help that can be provided in this matter

Well, I can tell you that for the time being I haven't had any kind of problems with USB devices when connected to my Windows 7 Bootcamp Partition. I only use a USB Joystick to play Microsoft Flight Simulator X, I also went and checked the Device Manager on Windows 7 and I have not seen a warning icon on any of the devices. I specifically went to the drivers that are in question and the device manager indicates that the USB drives are working properly. However since this post I had to reinstall OSX and I will be reinstalling Windows 7 sometime this week after finishing installing all the OSX updates that I have in software update, so I'll be posting back soon.
I also would like to ask you if you know, why this issue is happening with Windows 7 when running on Bootcamp?

  • [SOLVED] Archiso : installing AUR packages on a live image

    Hi all,
I'm quite an arch newbie, I'm trying to setup a live USB stick, with the help of archiso. My goal is to finally get an "audio oriented" system (with jack, ardour, qsampler, and so more...).
During the setup everything was working very well, until I tried to add some AUR packages to the install.
On the arch website, I found this tip, which gave me a great hope about this.
I'm not so familiar with Arch package management, but ok, I try to make a test : adding the "qsampler" AUR package. It needs "linuxsampler", "qt4", and "liblscp" as dependencies. "linuxsampler" and "qt4" are official packages, so I just have to add them to packages.both in the archiso working directory. "liblscp" is an AUR package (with no dependency); so there is 2 AUR packages to install : "liblscp", and "qsampler".
So I create a directory tree like described in the tip, download the two build packages from AUR, and for each of them I do (something) like described there :
    # tar -xvf tarball_filename.tar.gz
    # cd tarball_filename
    # makepkg --asroot
    # mv *.xz ..
    # cd ..
    # rm -r tarball_filename{,.tar.gz}
    And then:
    # repo-add customrepo.db.tar.gz *.xz
(I'm staying as root because it's red written to stay as root for the image creation. I think it's stupid, but people make stupid things when they are desesperate. Sorry I didn't take the time to test the code above again, it's only memory, but it was very similar)
I did the same for both architectures (i686 and x86_64), so that my custom repo looks like this:
    ~/liveusb/customrepo # ls -R
    i686 x86_64
    ./i686:
    customrepo.db customrepo.db.tar.gz liblscp-0.5.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz qsampler-0.2.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    ./x86_64:
    customrepo.db customrepo.db.tar.gz liblscp-0.5.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz qsampler-0.2.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Oops... I just noticed I did wrong for i686 machines, but it doesn't matter for the moment, since I'm working on an x86_64 machine.
As explained in the tip, I add the following lines to pacman.conf (in the archiso working directory):
    [customrepo]
    SigLevel = Optional TrustAll
    Server = file:///my/path/to/customrepo/$arch
From my point of view, at this point, the USB stick is ready to be updated:
    ~/liveusb # ./build.sh -v
and then (with /dev/sdf as my usb stick device):
    ~/liveusb # dd if=out/archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso of=/dev/sdf
But when I boot on the USB stick, there's no trace of qsampler (linuxsampler, however, is present).
Since it happened, I'm feeling like a lost, lonely man, on a desert island... Thinking about the "why", the "how"..., the meaning of life..., of package management... all this stuff
I'm sure I did something wrong about the "custom repository", and the main reason is I don't deeply understand all the steps about this; that's why I'm looking for help
    Any idea?
    Many thanks

    Thank you for the reply,
    I think I did a more trivial mistake :
With archiso, the packages are automatically installed, from a package list file called "packages.both", and "packages.x86_64", "packages.i686" for architecture dependent packages. But they only use common repos by default. The "'qsampler" is not in official repos (that's why I choosed this one for my question).
So, ok, I setup a common repo (with some mistakes but it was working), BUT...
I just forgot to put the package name in the packages.both file...
So, now that I did it, I just have an error about the package architecture, which I think possible to fix, just by rebuilding the common repo in a correct manner:
    ~/liveusb # ./build -v
warning: vlc-2.1.5-3 is up to date -- reinstalling
warning: mplayer-37224-2 is up to date -- reinstalling
error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package qsampler-0.2.3-1-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture
==> ERROR: Failed to install packages to new root
Trilby wrote:Also, does this need to be a static iso image - is there a reason not to just do a persistent usb install?
About the static iso image : the idea of building an iso image with all my personnal tools and config already installed on it is very pleasant to me, including the fact that you can burn it on a CD as well. The persistent acpect would be pleasant too, but in a secondary way.
While I'm writing this message I really understand a bit more about all of this, since yesterday... Sometimes, simply posting a message in forums helps you to understand your own problem, because you have to be clear and concise!
    Thanks

  • Layer or div tag positioning help wanted

Okay, actually I have two problems: 1) I have managed to
create a navigation bar, but I can't find out how to save it other
than saving the html page it was created on. The help literature
seems to vaguely indicate that a nav bar created can be saved and
used on other pages, but I'll be damned if I can find where there
are any details of this process.
*BTW, my navbar has multiple elements or buttons, so I can't
just copy paste, ctrl/shift doesn't seem to work selecting multiple
elements, tho it works on regular images*
    2) Once I solve problem #1, I am goin to want to have the
navigation bar "stay put" in it's position on the screen, immune to
any scrolling that occurs on the page(s). So, I plan on putting
into a layer or div that can be given this behavior or property.
Unfortunately, I can't find or figure out how to do that, either.
Is this a good plan? Is there a better way to make the Nav bar
    exempt from page scrolling?

No offense, but I think your approach may be a bit off base
    here (of
course I have not seen a link to a a page showing what you
    are trying to
achieve, so I could be completely wrong). The first part of
    your
question already makes me nervous, because it makes me think
    you have
used Fireworks or another image program to create your
    navbars.
Depending on which version of Fireworks you are using, that
    could be
disastrous or only unwieldly. The navigation bars created by
    Fireworks
are definitely not the best solution, and you can go through
    years of
posts, particularly by Murray, advising against their use.
If you are interested in an easier way to create your
    navigation, post back.
Second, wanting your navigation to stay put while the rest of
    the page
scrolls is something I see here a lot, but it's not
    necessarily how the
web works. People plunge into frame hell in order to
    accomplish it,
but it is like trying to kill a mosquito with a jackhammer.
There is a good extension that will do this for you if you
    insist, but
given the problems you are having now, I would first create a
    properly
coded page that behaves as a normal web page should, and ONLY
    THEN
    worry about server-side includes
revisit the issue of fixed and scrolling page elements.
An excellent tutorial for creating a cross-browser friendly,
    modern
(e.g.not relying on tables for layout) page can be found at
www.projectseven.com (search for "quickdraw" without the
    quotation
marks), where you can also find an excellent tutorial for
    creating
horizontal or vertical navigation menus that are simple and
    can be used
in templates or server-side includes (search for "uberlink"
    without the
    quotation marks).
    Good luck.
Oh, and don't apologize for not understanding code: learn to
    understand
and write good, solid html and css. Elizabeth Castro's book
    HTML for
the World Wide Web is excellent. For beginning css you might
