Personal domain question

I have set up a new website in iWeb '08 and have gone through the steps listed on the .Mac site to have a domain name I purchased through Yahoo Business work with it. As directed, I went to the Yahoo site and set the CName to point to web.mac.com.
The actual site is http://web.mac.com/rmansfield/GoSP/Blog/Blog.html
www.gardensofstationpointe.com correctly takes me there.
However, simply gardensofstationpointe.com (note the absense of "www") takes me to the default Yahoo "under construction" page. Why is this? Or have I just not given things enough time to fully kick in?

You can probably fix this by forwarding gardensofstationpointe.com to the www version.

Personal Domain Questions

I'm sure this has been answered but I can't find the answer with search...
1. After setting up a personal domain with iWeb is it really publishing the site to your domain requiring you to have a an additional site host? Or is it just interfacing with the domain control to set up forwarding?
2. I've looked at buying a domain from the Yahoo Small Business site. It looks very cheap, does anyone know of any problems with using Yahoo?
3. Do Yahoo Domains allow for masking of the .Mac web addresses?
4. Does anyone have any suggestions for were else to get a Domain name and/or hosting for personal use that doesn't break the bank?

Let it be known that I've not technically DONE any of this yet. I'm currently building my second iWeb site, and have not yet activated the personal domain service. Instead of sharing my knowledge, it's more accurate to say I'm sharing my speculations and related anecdotal experiences.
Okay, disclaimers aside...
Jason- how are the URLs of the individual pages showing up in the address bar when you surf to your site? Do you get 1) "www.mydomain.com" for all pages (this is called URL Masking, I believe), 2) "www.mydomain.com/mysitename" for all pages, 3) "www.mydomain.com/blog.htm" where each page is named accordingly, or 4) "www.mydomain.com/mysitename/blog.htm" which seems almost as unsightly as the original "homepage.mac.com" version of things.
mitsopa- It looks like you're trying to do what I'm after... You've paid for the domain name at the registrar (one company paid). Any good registrar should be able to handle the DNS, CNAME and MX records you need to change to do this. I would NOT pay the registrar for hosting, unless they charge an additional fee to setup and maintain your DNS records for the domain. -- Next, you've paid Apple for a .Mac user account (2 companies paid). I think this is all the paying that needs to be done. Basically, .Mac has or will become your web host, but NOT your eMail host. If you're happy with [email protected] for your eMail address, you're done. If you need [email protected] type eMail addresses, then you have 3 options: a) setup your own eMail server (a Mini with OS X.4 Server is running my eMail for 6 domains currently...) b) Pay another "hosting company" for eMail hosting - most hosting companies sell you web and eMail hosting as a package. Since you're already paying for web hosting at .Mac, this seems like a waste.) c) Find a free eMail service that will, in effect, host your eMail... I'm hearing good things about Google Apps and the eMail service they provide.
Maria- My first intuition is that it's a DNS propagation issue, and a day's wait will make the problem disappear. I have ISPs up here in Alaska that have taken up to 7 days to get the new IPs and cnames up for their users to access when have moved or setup servers in the past. If that's NOT it, start checking in iWeb as far as where you are trying to publish to. I know in this crazy OS X Mac world, you can publish a website at www.mydomain.com, mac.com/myusername, homepage.mac.com/~myusername, as well as server.ip.address.or.domainname and server.ip.address.or.domainname/~username if you've fired up Apache in your local machine. There's also some silliness about Public folders on Macs and publishing websites to them.... it goes on and on. Basically you can "publish" a website to any directory on any computer that's shared, visible to the world, and has a webserver (Apache) running...
MARIONRR- search the iWeb forum for creating or managing or publishing multiple sites using iWeb. I've not tried yet, but from what I read, it's quite difficult to get iWeb to do multiple separate sites. There's an option of multiple .Mac accounts, but I assume you don't want to go there. Also, I don't know how the .Mac servers are set up, but I would imagine they're pulling off this personal domain name service with some sort of symbolic link (alias) that simply points www.mydomain.com to your pages published with dot Mac. What this means (if I'm correct) is that the answer to your question is "no" since you can't publish two different sites to the same directory.... the "index.htm" page for one site will over-write the "index.htm" for the other...

.mac and personal domain question

I'm sure this has been addressed several times, although, I can't find the answer in a quick search...
I set-up a personal domain on my account. I have several websites going in iWeb, however. Can I still host my personal domain on .mac, but still publish my other sites to my .mac url? How do I switch back-n-forth between my .mac url and my personal domain without messing things up?!

iWeb always publishes to .Mac, nowhere else, regardless of what it says somewhere in the app. You can always reach all your sites via the url http://web.mac.com/username/sitename.

Quick Question - Setting up Personal Domain with godaddy

Just a quick question to make sure I've done this correctly?
Ok, I've published my iWeb website.
I've purchased a personal domain with godaddy.
I've set up the personal domain in my mobile me account.
I then logged into my godaddy account and went to 'Total DNS Control and MX Records'
I changed the following under CNAME (Aliases)
www web.me.com 1 Hour
and then added a new CNAME Record
www.*******.com web.me.com 1 Hour
Have I done this all correctly?
Will it take a few hours to take effect?
Anything else I need to consider?

CNAME settings can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
As long as you have forwarded your domain name to web.me.com, then it should be okay.

Personal Domain Set-Up Question

Hi fellow iwebbers,
I had a quick question about personal domain set-ups. I am using a domain.com's registrar for my domain. Their DNS management system requires two entries: one for the "www" and one for the canonical name. If web.mac.com is the "www," what should be the canonical name?
Also, when I visit my published site directly from iweb, it takes me to www.(mydomain).com/site. Why does it add the "site" part? Why not go directly to just the domain? Does this affect the DNS records?
If my questions are stupid, then shut up because it's weebo's 21st bday tomorrow.

2. This doesn't affect the DNS records, which only control the portion of the URL before the third / character. The rest of the URL is determined by the location of the files on the server hosting them.

Personal domain.... easy question for someone who has done it.. easy points

If i forward my www.vegasablaze.com to mobile me from go daddy and set up the personal domain in my mobile me account will my address bar read http://www.vegasablaze.com or will it read my mobile me site address? ie http://web.me.com/example/Site/Welcome.html? See once i posted my site to godaddy i lost my blog ability. But I dont want people to se my mobile me address. So I would like to forward to personal domain. but am afraid if it goes to my mobile me it would look unprofessional..

Personal Domain replaces the web.me.com/username part of the URL with the domain name, with the subsequent folder and filenames on the end, so that to take your example of
http://web.me.com/example/Site/Welcome.html
people entering http://domainname.com
would be taken to the welcome page and the URL showing will be
http://domainname.com/Site/Welcome.html
However note that when you do this the original web.me.com URL still works and is searchable by Google. Though casual visitors to your domain won't see the real URL, it's not difficult to find it.

Personal Domain using CName question/ How to simplify URL?

I have iWeb '06 set up to publish to a personal domain that I purchased through GoDaddy.com. It is working fine, except that when I enter my domain name, the URL comes up as follows-- "http://www.mydomain.tv/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html" Is there a way to get the URL to EXCLUDE "iWeb/Site" and just read "http://www.mydomain.tv/Welcome.html"???

Question about personal domain support

iWeb '08 said it has support for "personal domains". Wondering what this means.
Specifically, I'd like to build my web site and click "publish" and have it go to my personal web site -- probably by configuring some ftp settings or something. Does iWeb '08 have this sort of support?
Currently I have to export the site to a directory and then manually upload to the remote site. Would be great if there was a one-click solution for publish/synchronizing the site.

I also have 3 sites I've purchased through godaddy all for a grand total of $25....only had great luck with the whole process!
When I forward my site to the .mac it does mask the name for all the pages...I was wondering if the metatag section next to the masking made a difference to the names of all the pages, but I didn't know what to type in there...hence all of my pages just say dekeyserelementary too.
I'd love to know if you figure out how to change that!
It does look like my counters don't work when the pages were being masked. Know anything about that?
My other site, I didn't choose masking so once you type in my name.com it turns in to the .mac site address, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal.

Newbie Question Alert! Personal Domains...

Hi,
I have a domain which is only really used as a placeholder for my email account - set up as an IMAP account and hosted online to protect me from virus attack.
Although the domain is not hosted by the email company (it's actually hosted by 1and1) is it conceivable for this domain to be hosted by my MobileMe account and still keep the hosted email function?
I appreciate I would need to change the tags, etc., but I don't think this will be too much of an issue.

Yes, you can use your domain name with iWeb in your MobileMe account, but it does not host your domain name in that sense - what you actually do is enter your domain name into your personal domain name settings at MobileMe and link your domain name to MMe. You need to set up CNAME forwarding also at your domain name registrar and that is how you link the two together.

How do you post multiple personal domains to .Mac sub accounts?

I was assured by .Mac tech support that .Mac will host a different personal domain on each of five accounts of a family pak. Now I discover that iWeb is a one-trick pony. I'm stunned that I can't create separate sites and upload them individually. I've never heard of an application that can only create one document!
And I can't even find the data for that ONE document; ~/Library/Application/Domain.sites2 is only 20kb no matter how many photos you've added to the site.
So I guess I have two questions: How do you post multiple domains to sub accounts?
And, where's my data?

The tilde (~/Library/etc.) indicates home folder; that is where I was looking. I did a Spotlite search and discovered that in attempting to backup my data, I'd moved it; Spotlite found it and it was all intact.
Then I discovered I could duplicate Domain.sites2, change the names to Domain de.sites2, and Domain daru.sites2, open daru's site and delete de's, then open de's and delete daru's, and I had two separate sites that I presume I'll be able to upload separately. Once I get .Mac sub groups created...
Seems like a stupid bit of programming; must have hired some windows guys to code it...
Problem I'm having now is, .Mac won't let me set up a sub account in my wife's name because she already has a .Mac ID and a trial account because she joined a .Mac group. Awaiting a reply rom .Mac tech support.
So my question isn't quite answered yet, but it does look like I can post several sites without having to set up separate user accounts. Seems like this could be explained in the help file in plain English...

Blog and personal domain/store, SEO & other issues

I'm using the blog format to provide helpful tips, dynamic content and general marketing for our online store. The .Mac points to a subdomain, not directly to the site and the content can be viewed through the store pages in a frame (GoLive). I've submitted sitemaps to google for both the store site and blog subdomain and many questions, lots of uncertainity and variable scenarios on this and .Mac versus maybe better SEO friendly options like Wordpress and .Mac's general sluggishness. I like the ease of updating with .Mac and the main reason I have taken the .Mac to personal domain approach was the Search capability.
1) Is there a way using GoLive or 3rd party option to search for blog content if I simply Published to folder and upload content & pages in the site versus the personal domain approach?
2) If I update blog content directly to the site, what other steps aside from, resubmitting the sitemap to Google are good SEO practices?
3) How does the blog via subdomain sitemap/Google content get crawled? So far the visible links appear to correlate to 'Number of Excerpts to Show'. plus the main blog page and archive page. Will submitting the sitemap in a particular level of the blog folders affect the crawling to maximize content discovery?
4) Does having content in a frame from the subdomain from a .Mac account affect SEO & possibly get into Duplication of Content issues?
5) Probably more questions to follow depending on logical direction and tweaks...
Any insights, input or tweak suggestions are appreciated.

Personal domain and idisk

Hi, my question is, can i use the idisk to host my own personal website that is currently being hosted at another site, and use my own domain name? I am not using iweb but i do have idisk. I simply want to move my current website thats being hosted elsewhere to my idisk and use my personal domain.

Yes. Just copy the folder and files that you put on the other server onto your iDisk in the Web/Sites folder. You should have an index.html file and a folder with the site files. Have your domain name provider point the name to "http://web.mac.com/your account name/". As long as there is only one site in that folder and one index.html file (outside of the site folder) that will do it.

How to use iPhoto web gallery with iWeb & personal domain name

So, another question about iWeb 08:
I've set up my site to use a personal domain name, like www.mypersonaldomain.com. I've configured everything with my DNS settings so that it actually points to my iWeb site, and I'm happy about that.
However, I've imported a few iPhoto '08 web galleries into my site, but when I browse to them by going to www.mypersonaldomain.com and clicking on the link for my gallery, it goes to a URL that actually shows my .mac account, i.e. gallery.mac.com/sockdaddy/gallery1/photo.jpg
Is there any way to have the web galleries that I'm using become a more transparent part of my iWeb site, and use my personal domain?

I've never done this on .Mac but I do use this on my server. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
In iPhoto select your web gallery and in the "file" menu select "export" and then "Web Page".
Select your options and click "Export" to the desktop.
There are now 4 folders and an index.html file.
Change the name of the index file to whatever you want to call the page e.g WebGallery.html
Now go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites and open your website folder.
Drag and drop the 4 folders and the html file from your desktop into this.
Create a link to this from your website in the "link" inspector and choose "external page".
The URL for the link will be the same as any other page on your site except WebGallery is substituted for the page name.
If you check the "open link in new window" you won't have to worry about the fact that you don't have a link back to your site from the WebGallery page.

Personal Domain Issue

I purchased a personal domain for my website that I have built using iWeb '08. When I go to set up the personal domain through iWeb, I get the follwoing message:
"We are unable to configure domains at this time. Please try again later."
This is the second day in a row that I have been receiving this message. Does anyone know what may be causing the problem? Is it something I am doing, or is it something internal at Apple?

Have you read all the replies under this topic and especially my previous post which answers your question?
Again - it is NOT in iWeb that you need to adjust these settings. Instead, you need to log into your MobileMe account either through System Preferences and click on Account settings or by typing in me.com into the top of your browser and logging in this way. After doing this, click on the 'head' or 'person' image at the top of that page and this is your personal account section. Then on the left had side there is a button that has Personal Domain on it. Click on this and it should show your personal domain name setting. There is a little button on the right hand side of this that has Remove Domain on it. Click on this and your domain name will be removed from your MME account.
When you remove your domain name from your account, your url for that account will then be http://web.me.com/username/sitename - the normal MME url.
Next time you open iWeb, or that particular domain file, the green at the bottom will then show your MME url instead of your domain name.
