Photo consuming hard drive storage but cannot be found.

My wife's 4s claims to have 5.0 GB of storage consumed by photos although the photos cannot be accessed from the phone or from a PC.  This happened after having a broken screen replaced although I do not see how the two are related. The company that replaced the screen (CPR) said "tough luck".  The phone's usage says the photos are there but as you can see the photos are clearly not.  I am assuming they are on the hard drive but the file path is interupted somehow.  We have already accepted the fact that photos of our family are lost but is there a way to regain the storage or by some miracle retrieve the photos.   Any input or assistance is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Try restoring the iPhone with iTunes.
Whatever photos/videos that were in the Camera Roll with the last backup should be restored.
If no change after doing that, restore as a new iPhone or not from the backup.
A good idea to use photo stream and/or regularly import the Camera Roll contents with your computer as with any other digital camera.

I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes. The hard disk was replaced recently in order to gain extra memory. Is there some sort of limit set up from the original hard drive causing this problem?

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

  • Does iCloud drive use up hard drive storage space?

    HI,
I want to save hard drive space and use iCloud Drive to store my documents, pictures etc. I have the iCloud drive folder set up in my finder. I have been copying and pasting data in there, but it seems whenever I do; the hard drive storage space decreases.
I thought the entire point of iCloud was to use cloud storage and not offline storage; unless you download it from the cloud to your hard drive. Why am I losing hard drive space?
Any help you can offer or suggestions would be very much appreciated

    Hi FlyFalcon,
I am writing to say that I am having the problem you are worried about. I have a 121 GB MacBook with flash storage, and I am running out of room.
This is my work computer so I don't have any personal photos/music/movies stored on here. My iCloud drive has over 100 GB on it and it's driving this computer nuts! I am constantly getting the "your startup disk is full" message. As you can see from the screen shot below, it's saying I have 58.61 GB of photos on this computer, 25.84GB of movies etc...but all these files live on my personal MacBook at home.
I am paying for the $3.99 a month for 200 GB but I didn't get that iCloud would use up my HD space. So as a warning, 128 GB may not be enough for you.

  • I can select a game in iTunes and it is downloaded to my Apps Library. I can see it on my hard drive. I cannot download the game from here to my iPod.  How do you do this?

I am trying to download games to my iPod Touch.  I can select a game in iTunes and it is downloaded to my Apps Library and on my hard drive. But I cannot transfer or copy this file to my iPod so I can play the game.  What do i need to do?

  • Have songs on my hard drive already, but still has iCloud icon next to it in iTunes...

So I'm confused as to how iTunes Match should work apparently.  I have it turned on and it works fine, but all of the songs in my iTunes library (connected to airport extreme) says they are in the iCloud instead of local.  So then if I press the download button for that song, it downloads it and duplicates the song on the hard drive!  How weird!  Why wouldn't it just point to the file on my hard drive since it's already there?
Or once we turn on Match, should we go and delete our entire local library?  I'm just confused.
I also thought I could play them and it would show as downloaded by pointing to the hard drive version, but no dice.  Apparently it only streams from a Mac.
The whole reason this is an issue (besides *** backwards functionality) is I am trying to export a playlist and it only shows downloaded songs in the text file, not songs in iCloud, even though all the songs are on my hard drive!
Anyway, and ideas would be great.
    Thanks,

With iCloud, is there a need to backup music anymore?  If you lose your hard drive, can't you just download it again from iCloud?  That was my impression at least.
Read this: FAQ: Why iTunes Match Can Not Be Used as a Backup. If you care about your data you'll still keep local backups of all your personal data. Cloud storage is nice and all that but Apple doesn't market iTunes Match as a backup solution and because the matching is not 100% accurate nor does the service store Apple Lossless files, it is not a viable backup solution. For cloud backups you want a company like Backblaze or Mozy or one of the others available who are backup solutions.

Currently both MBPr and iMac have the iTunes Media folder pointed to the Drobo.  However, I did notice that some music files were downloaded locally on the MBPr, which I think are from the auto download feature.  Not sure though.
Yeah, the home sharing thing may work.  I wanted for both machines to be able to see purchases from either machine, or iPhones.  That's why I wanted them to share a library.  So if I bought a song on my laptop, I could run upstairs and see if on the iMac as well.  Maybe library sharing is the best way to do that however.
Keep in mind that any purchases made on the MBPr will be downloaded, and with automatic downloads turned on purchases from other devices will also be downloaded. Right off the top of my head I don't know if this will result in duplicate downloads, but as long as the MBPr is on the local network and iTunes has the library pointing at the Drobo it will all go into the same spot. BUT... if you make a purchase on the MBPr while away from the local network that purchase will be downloaded to the local internal HDD.
So a variation on the theme I talked about above is to, perhaps, not make any purchases on the MBPr and turn off auto-downloads for purchases and keep iTunes Match and Home Sharing enabled. This will enable you to access the music library while home and away and not keep any media on the internal HDD.

  • Hard drive storage

Hello, I have a B&W G3 running OS 10.3.9 with a 40 GB ATA hard drive. I would like to add a second hard drive to be used only for storage of files. But I think I've read somewhere that the main hard drive on these models can only recognize up to 128 GB as the primary hard drive. But, if I just want to install a second hard drive, say a 160 to 250 GB hard drive only as a storage drive, would it be able to work with the 40 GB HD as the primary drive? Any help will be greatly appreciated. John

    Hi, John -
Is your B&W G3 a rev. 1 or rev. 2 model? This article can help you determine that (scroll down to section 3, "Revised IDE Controller") -
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/yosemite/newfeatures.html
The issue is that a rev. 1 model can not reliably use a second drive on the built-in bus, nor drives larger than about 40 or 50GB. The risk is sudden loss of data.
Rev. 2 models are okay with second drives, and with drives up to 128GB (formatted) in size.
...the main hard drive on these models can only recognize up to 128 GB as the primary hard drive. But, if I just want to install a second hard drive, say a 160 to 250 GB hard drive only as a storage drive, would it be able to work with the 40 GB HD as the primary drive?
It is the built-in IDE (ATA) controller that governs limits, not how big one drive is vs. the other.
Provided the machine is a rev. 2 model, the built-in controller has a limit of being able to use a drive no larger than 128GB (formatted) in size. This limit applies to each of the two possible drives individually, not collectively. Larger drives can be used, such as a 160GB drive, but only the first 128GB will be available. Since it is a drive size limit and not a volume size limit, partitioning will not get around it. And, since it is a limitation of the controller and hence is a hardware limit, the limitation is OS independent.
There are solutions in order to use larger drives.
    (1) On either a rev. 1 or rev. 2 model, since the restriction is a factor of the builr-in controller, the solution is to use a different controller. This can be done by adding a PCI card with its own ATA controller; drives connected to its bus are not subject to the limitations of the built-in controller. A 250GB drive could easily be used with such a card, and all of it would be available.
In theory you could add a PCI card with two buses and thus add four more internal drives. However, the power supply and the internal cooling design were not intended for that load. Realistically, I would not add more than two internal drives; one additional drive (for a max of two internal) is safer.
    (2) On a rev. 2 model, a software solution can be used -

Read the section on restrictions carefully, and the notes further down.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

You say the music is not on the external HD, the music list (iTunes?) is empty, and it is not on the iPOd. Then where is the music you want to move to the external HD?

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."
