Photo icons and the inbox- Mountain Lion

Hi I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and am liking  some of these features a lot.  One thing I am wondering about: do I have to attach a photo/icon to an actual contact to be able to get the associated photo with incoming mail?  In other words, do I have to have a contact set up to choose a photo associated with a particular sender?  I receive a lot of  incoming mail that I don't need to have contacts established for but would like to see an icon/photo pop up on the left with the mail.
Anyone?
P

Yes, you would need to have the sender in your collection of contacts, and you would need to assign some image to that contact.  If you are the visual type, it's a great feature.  It may take some time to set up, but it can be a fast way to scan through your mail, other than doing a "search".  I use the contact image feature all the time.  I made a folder of images in my picture file to use in addition to those Apple gives you.  For most companies, you can do a Google image search and find their logo, which will usually fit perfectly in the image frame used in your contacts. (You're not taking their logo for profit; you're using it to identify the messages they send you.)  Or find other gifs and jpegs through the same image search to give a more personal touch to your contacts.  Find an image that identifies a hobby, a job related tool, or whatever reminds you of that contact.  Use the same image over again for contacts that are related in some respect-- online shops, accounts, co-workers on a project, etc.  It's probably not something everyone is going to take the time to customize, but as I said, if you are visual, it's worth the time.  By the way, the images don't suddenly appear in your mail as soon as you assign them to a contact.  Set up your contacts and images, close your mail app, and then re-open it.  There they are.  If you have a contact that has multiple addresses they send from, just copy and paste those extra addresses to the same contact page. Set up the ones you tend to save the most. Don't bother with the ones you consider junk mail.  You probably don't want them in your contacts.  As you receive other mail from senders that you do care about saving, add those to your contacts and assign some image.

  • So, I just purchased, apple TV and the latest Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I can mirror my IPad and Iphone with no problems, so why is the icon not showing up on my top bar like all the youtube tutorials?

why is the airplay icon not appearing in the top bad like all the tutorial videos?

I assume that you did not check before buying, if you had you would have seen that your Mac is too old for Airplay Mirroring to work:
    Supported Macs
AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion takes advantage of the hardware video encoding capabilities of 2nd and 3rd Generation Intel Core processors. Hardware video encoding allows AirPlay Mirroring to efficiently deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models have processors that support AirPlay Mirroring:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
And if you bought ML solely for that function you should remove it from your machine and get a refund.

From where did you lose the iPhoto icon? From the Dock? If so, then it's still in your Applications folder. Find it there then drag the icon back into the Dock. If it's no longer in Applications perhaps you've moved or renamed it. Use Spotlight to search for "iphoto."
Upgrading to Mountain Lion will not affect your iPhoto Library unless you erase the hard drive first. Be sure you backup before any system upgrade.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.

The apple store is so unhelpful. I have an iMac computer operating on Mac OSX 10.5.8. I want to upgrade to the latest Mountain Lion operating system so I can work with the iCloud on my computer and download my emails. I can't seem to purchase this on-line as it keeps telling me to go to the app store. I haven't got the app store on my computer as I am told I need iCloud for which I need the new operating system, which I can't download or purchase as I am sent back to an instruction telling mee to go to the app store icon.
How difficult can it be to simply purchase the software on-line have it shipped to you so you can install it, in the event it cannot be downloaded as it appears it can't be based on my curent operating systems being Mac OSX 10.5.8.

Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'

Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from download, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $30.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this?  A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

Re: My Macbook 2009 model was recently upgraded with a new hard drive and upgraded to Mountain Lion OS. I am battling to retrieve all my photos that were ''saved'' in iCloud. Can someone help?

If you are trying to recover photo stream photos, they are only held in iCloud for 30 days.  All you would be able ro recover is photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
If you have an iOS device that still has the photo stream photos one it, you can save them to the camera roll by opening the my photo stream album, tapping Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  Once in the camera roll, they can be imported to iPhoto on your Mac as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

    iMac and Mac Pro
    Thanks

SADLY  not as i downloaded an upgrad to my original PAGES/
i have in the meantim had to open www.icloud. then from there import the file that i am working on and then check on ipad if it uploaded/ yes it did.
but what a waste of time as it doesn not save any changes done automatically back in the cloud....
i am now downloading the new LION and hope that it will fix the problem
i cant find any other way. I was lead to believe that you wrote, it saved automatically, on to the cloud, you then opened anohter device in anotother country even, and the new file was there, waiting, in its latest version.......
and the same magic was supposed to happen in reverse.
    It doesn't/
if i have to open a browser, go to www.icloud....why on earth did they not just leave us an icon to drop it in in that case?
I hope the new lion will help resolve the isssue/
any other ideas> keep em coming...thank you so much.

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.

  • I still don't totally understand the difference on my iPhone between PhotoStream (with iCloud icon), Photos (the icon) and Albums and Camera Roll (under Photos icon) and and Camera Roll (under Camera icon).  I want to delete photos from my iPhone 4.

I  don’t  understand the difference on my iPhone between PhotoStream (with iCloud icon), Photos (the icon) and Albums and Camera Roll (under Photos icon) and and Camera Roll (under Camera icon).  They seem to be more or less the same thing, but deleting photos in one place does not delete them elsewhere.
When I tried to import from my camera to my iMac computer the computer would not recognized 900 of the 920 photos on the camera so I had to (successfully) use the Image Capture application to import them.
I want to delete photos from my iPhone 4 in order to free up storage (I only have 8GB.)  But in synching I do not want to delete any images from my iPhoto on my computer.
Is there a way that I can Delete All under Edit in either Photos or Camera on my iPhone and check about 20 ijmages to remain on the iPhone?  I could find no command to Select All and then uncheck the 20 photos I want to keep.
I have the 8GB iPhone and the iMac with OS 10.9.2 and iPhoto '09 Version 8.1.2.
    Help!

I have Version 6.1.3 because the clogged storage will not allow me to upload Version 7.1.  Catch 22.  This is basically a storage issue, I believe.  I cannot delete enough stuff on my iPhone to allow me to either back up or upload the new OS 7.  I am unwilling to pay for more storage in iCloud, so I want to delete stuff I don't need.  But I haven't yet figured out how to successfully do that.  I synch my phone and computer.  I want to delete mail on the Mail app and photos and still keep my photos on my computer on iPhoto, but not on my phone.  I seem unable to do that.  Any advice?

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t use iCloud. There's an iCloud Support Community where everybody uses iCloud. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/icloud/icloud_on_my_mac

I purchased my Macbook Pro in November 2011 and just installed mountain lion but do not have the power nap option.. anyone know why?

It is for the MacBook with built in flash storage.

    4. Power Nap requires a Mac notebook with built-in flash storage. May require a firmware update.

I'm in the same position, the store said they didn't know of any new release, so i bought my macbook pro to find out about mountain lion. I really hope that i'm not going to pay for the upgrade. New to apple, also last month bought my Ipad 3, really thought that Airplay would have been on my book pro, nope, waste of time.........need that update to use it. Back i the box then, get the windows 7 ultimate pro back out until then.

I bought and was downloading Mountain Lion but the download stalled. What do I do?

What do you see in the Mac App Store > Purchases section? The dl could just be paused, in which case you can resume it and carry on.
If it doesn't list it there then search your Mac for the installer incase it finished in the background and didn't start the installer automatically.
Finally, if you don't see it anywhere and you're sure it hasn't finished and actually updated without you realising it, you can email Apple's iTunes support team and they can either put it back in your download queue to try again or regrant you the download so you can 'buy' it again without having to pay.

  • Un-split the hard drive and re-download Mountain Lion on my second laptop

I have two partitions on the hard drive of my MacBook Air; one has Snow Leopard (Mac OS X, 10.6.8) and the other has Mountain Lion (Mac OS X, 10.8.3).  As I start saving more files on my MBA, I start having less free space to work with.  When I purchased the Mountain Lion, I didn't purchase the CD version; I downloaded from Apple's site.  Now I need to un-split my MacBook Air, keeping the Snow Leopard on it and move the Mountain Lion to my MacBook Pro.  How do I do that?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

download Mountain Lion again from the App Store - once the download is complete, it will try to install - cancel the install and create a Mountain Lion USB installer.

You do realize that you can also download Mountain Lion in your Macbook Pro through App Store.  It should be under your purchases section when you open App Store.
