Photo Paper Black Ink Smearing When Dry

I have a continuous problem with the ink easily smearing when I print with this paper, and check B&W in the print box. I am using a HP 8500 printer with HP 940XL inks. No matter how many days they dry, they smear and the ink lifts off. But, if I print the same with color settings (a b&w photo), the inks don't smear when dry. But the color cast to the old b&w photos is unattractive, not to mention a waste of color ink.
Why is this and how can it be avoided?

I have had the same problem with an HP Pro 8000.I selected Hp Premium Presentation Paper, Matte because I could not get the printer to print with black ink only with any photo paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was printing on HP Advanced Photo Paper Glossy and getting acceptable results UNTLL I ran out of black ink.  After I installed a new 940XL Black cartridge ink could easily be rubbed off the prints when they were dry.  I was still printing on paper from the same box.   I have also discovered that when printing on HP Premium Photo Paper Glossy the ink will not rub off when it is dry!!!!  The premium Photo Paper is several years old.  I seleccted HP Premium Presentation Paper, Matte when printing on the old photo paper again to be able to print with black ink only.  The tint that results from printing without using black is almost impossible to correct back to a true black & White. Why did one cartridge work and the next one smear??????????????

  • Black ink smears on printing

I have an HP Officejet J6450 that uses 74 & 75 ink cartridges.  I purchased it in March of 2009.
I began to get black ink smears on anything I printed so, I followed all of the suggestions regarding cleaning....
I put in a new black cartridge but  the problem continued to the point that I was ready to throw the printer away.  Eventually, as I was trying to load paper last night, it kept rejecting the paper, indicating that it was the wrong size or type.  Finally a piece of paper jammed in the printer.   As I was removing the paper jam, I saw a small caterpillar size brush in the paper jam.  When I removed the paper, the brush came with it.  The small brush had a sticky side to it and it was covered with black ink.  I have to presume that this is the brush that cleans the ink cartridge head.  It was smearing all of my printing until it dislodged.  I have no idea where it goes nor do I want to put it back in place only for it to dislodge again.
Now, the printer works fine but I don't have a brush in place to clean the ink cartridges.  A disappointed user.  My next printer will probably be another brand and another set of ink cartridges......

Ironically the small brush is one that is designed to wipe fibers (paper fibers, pet hair, etc.) from the carriage to prevent ink smearing.  Removing the brush will not have any adverse effects for normal printing.  It at some point in the future the ink smearing returns you can manually clean the bottom of the carriage and print cartridges as shown here.

  • Office jet pro 8600 how to default to black ink only when printing from my ipad

Is there a way to set an option to print black ink only when printing from my Ipad 2?

    Hi,
Airprint does not support Black ink only printing, however the HP ePrint app allow it.
Be aware that the option is only available for documents (e.g Office files, PDFs, Web pages and emails) but not for Photo files.
You may find the steps to get and use the app in the document below:

  • K5400 - Black ink does not dry on photo paper

I have an Officejet Pro K5400 that was purchased about 10 months ago.  It is used to print dental images on photo paper (HP Advanced) in one of our remote offices and gets used 1 or 2 days a week.  It had been working fine until the last couple of weeks.  Now when we print, the black ink can be smeared after the printing is done.  The images are all in black and grey tones and it consequently affects the entire image.  If I run a test print using multiple colors, the other colors all seem to dry immediately and do not smear.  The black does smear.  I've tried a new print cartridge and run the clean cycle multiple times.  If I use regular paper (not glossy) then it seems to be fine.  Anyone have an idea where I look next?  Thanks

Hi I have seen your problem and having just bought a new HP printer I'm having the same problem did you clear your probelm of black ink not drying?, I have a brand new epsom in office in case I cannot sort this quickly as it is costing money!!

  • Black Ink smearing

Hi, I have an Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless, and I have the exact same problem as many, many other users who have written in about their printers (whether or not the same model).
I have worked with HP Tech Support via both chat and phone, and we did all sorts of cleaning processes, but the black ink continues to smear (even after the photos are 30 days old), and also on brochure and invitation paper.  While I realize everyone wants us to use HP paper, it is not always available in the size and type we want for our print jobs.  It is not at all acceptable that HP mandates use of their paper.  Frankly, the Kodak paper I use is superior, and about 2x the cost of comparable HP paper.  Black ink did NOT smear with my older HP Photosmart all-in-one, so WHY does it smear with the new Officejet?  (BTW, I was talked into trading up by one of the tech support genies last October).
Has anyone addressed the question as to whether or not there is a problem with the black ink itself? I cannot be possible that all of us have the same problem and that the ink has not been suspect.  The HP chat tech with whom I spoke did not answer the question when I posed it to him.
Am waiting for a manager to call me back - and I really don't want a refurbished printer to replace the one that is only 4 months old. Not really fair, is it?
    -Tink

    Hello Tink333,
The problem that is happening most likely is indeed a wrong choice of paper. While Kodak surely is an A grade paper, i might not be compatable with your printer. Its most likely a high grade photo paper suited for dye based inks which photoprinters use (best inks for pictures) . The unit you are currently having is using pigment based inkt (better for documents) which is meant as a document printer but can also print pictures if the paper is suitable for pigment based inkt. That is why most likely most tech support will advice HP paper, because of the simple fact that they now which HP paper is suited for that ink. If you want to use kodak paper that is fine off course but then i would suggest contacting kodak to find out which of their papers is suited for pigment based inkts. Hope you find what you are looking for.

  • Photosmart 5520 print on photo paper - black isn't black

Hi, I've been having some issues printing text on photo paper. I create little circles with a name in it (2cmx2cm) to use in jewellery. The print used to be really sharp AND really black. Since a few months, the black is getting a bit faded out, more greytone than black. I tried changing the settings to 'print black only', max. DPI etc, but nothing helps. The ink cartridge isn't empty either, not according to the printer test or me (I shook the cartridge and I can hear there's certainly ink inside).  Could you please advise setting I should use? Can I enhance the thickness or grade of black from the print? Would it help if the circles and names are created in a super high DPI file in Photoshop?  Thanks in advance.

Hi , Have you by chance changed the type of paper you are using? Based on your description, after the black became a little faded you began tinkering with your print settings. Since changing the print settings didn;t help, I can't help but wonder if the issue is not related to the settings at all. What happens when you try to copy something, is the black print then faded too? Please complete the solutions presented in the following document to full troubleshoot the issue: Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One and HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 5520 e-All-in-One Printer Series. I hope this is helpful. • How can I print black ink only when in automatic two-sided mode for Officejet 6500?

When I set the printer to automatically print on two sides, it only allows color or high quality grayscale as print color options.  If I print on only one side, then I have a third option for black ink only.  Does anyone know how to get black ink only while getting two sided printing automatically?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Sorry, this is not an option.  When printing the front page of a duplexed page the black is underprinted with color to make the print "set" and dry faster.  As a result "black only" is not an option when printing automatically duplexed pages.

  • [HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni] Stopped printing black ink documents when Magenta toner finished

    Hi there,
    I have a HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni.
I just printed about 200 pages of black ink documentation.  The black ink cartridge is still about 38% full.
Although none of these printouts involved colour, the printer started flashing the message: "Replace magenta cartridge".
Since then, it would no longer print.  Again, I am only attempting to print black ink docs, and I even tried turning off the colour print option to no avail.
The printer queue on my macbook shows the doc as 'printing' and 'sending', and then it disappears, with nothing happening on the printer itself.
If I push the 'X' button on the printer, it says 'cancelling print' or something like that.
Is there any way around the problem of the printer not printing anything once one of its cartridges runs to empty, even though the printjob does not need that colour cartridge?
    Thank you!
    Steve

How can I find the Toolbox FX on Windows 7 Professional? I can only find information about Windows XP and Windows Vista. When I  go to my Start button, and go to All Programs , there is no HP option or folder;therefore,I can't find the Toolbox FX.
My printer ran out of magenta toner, but all I want to do is print in black ink (which I have plenty of).
    Can anyone please help me?

  • Deskjet 6940 black ink smearing on page sometime after cartridge change

The ink started smearing on the printed page, not immediately after I changed the ink cartridge, but after around 50 sheets.  Some sheets have faint lines perpendicular to the printed lines as if ink were on the rollers.
I opened up the printer and wiped excess ink off the bottom of the gray cables and off the stainless rod running across the interior.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    With thanks

Do thy have any lot # or mfg date on the packages? Seems if I return it to the store for an other one the store would have the same batch and hence the same problem.

Are you printing on photo paper?  If so the black cartrdige will not be used if you have selected the proper paper type.  The black cartrdige suses pigmented ink which is not compatible with photo papers.  If you select photo paper in the printer settings it will properly use the color cartrdige to print black.

  • HP Photosmart 7510 will ONLY use photo black ink

I have a photosmart 7510 printer and I'm printing from microsoft word 2010 on a windows 8 computer. I'm printing a word document with no pictures in it. The printer preferences are set to Plain Paper with Normal quality. I cannot get the printer to use the XL black ink cartridge. It only uses the photo black ink. Is there a setting I can choose to get it to use the regular black ink?
    This question was solved.

    Hi shirsar,
I understand you have a Photosmart 7510 that seems to be using a lot more of the photo black than the regular black ink. I'm sorry to hear this, but believe I can assist you with a solution.
You can set the printer to use black ink only when printing from the PC and that should ensure that it uses that the black ink and not the photo ink. My instructions will be to set it up in the driver so it does it for all programs (if you want it for just the program please let me know and I will advise further). You will want to start with going to your Start screen, and just start typing Devices and Printers and you will want to open that (if that doesn't work type in Control Panel and then proceed to open Devices and Printers). Once Devices and Printers is open, right click on your Photosmart 7510 icon and select Printing Preferences. You will then want to click the Advanced button at the bottom right of the screen. The next page that opens will allow you to set the printer to use Black Ink Only when printing from the PC (please follow the screen shot below for any clarification).
Hope this helps, have a great day!!

  • Highlighter smears my black ink

I have a new HP Officejet Pro 8500.  When I print reports for work and try to "highlight" them, the ink smudges/smears and is unreadable.
Is there a solution for this?  We use copy paper 20 lb, bright white.
I've heard there may be smudge proof hightlighers, has anyone heard of those and do they work?
We have an epson officejet printer and it does NOT smear when hightlighted.  Is it the HP inks?  HELP!

    Hello NIMROD239,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with the ink smearing when attempting to use a highlighter.
I have looked into the issue and I have found that the pages would need to dry for a few minutes before using the highlighter.
I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.

  • How to print on the back of photo paper so it will dry.

I need to print on the back of some photos I have. I am using an HP Officejet Pro 8500A using Windows 7. I have tried to print on these photos but the ink will not dry.
The paper I am using is 4x6 glossy everyday photo paper.
What should I change in the settings to get the ink to dry????
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
most of the Photo Paper will only allow you to print on a single side.
Unless the used Photo Paper is intended for double side printing you will not be able to print on the back of the paper.
There are no different settings for any of the sided, it only depand on the used media.

  • Smearing Black Ink

Help - I tried to work with HP through 9 e-mails.  I cleaned and cleaned the printer and the ink cartridges. I replaced the black ink cartridge three times. My documents still smear. The color cartridge does not smear - only the black ink smears. I have a Officejet J6480-All-in-One printer and it is only 3 months old. Does anyone have any other suggestions.  Slicker.

The brush actaully does serve a purpose.  If it is misplaced I would start by trying to position it back in place ratherr than removing it....
(The brush is meant to keep stray fibers sich as paper fibers or pet hair from building up on the printhead causing ink smearing.)
