Photo pixelating in iMovie

I extensively have tried to resolve the following issue via apple web site searches, two phone conversations with apple, and many, many varialbe of "self tests" to mini dv, idvd, quicktime, etc. Tired directly dragging photos into iMovie, different export options from iPhoto, etc.
When I refer to picture quality issues, I am referring to the final output of the project from iMovie HD 6/iDVD to a DVD and to miniDV tape as viewed on a tv screen.
iMovie project for School's sports team. Photos shot with Nikon D80 10.2 MP digital SLR at the camera's full resolution. Project's photos imported from iPhoto to iMovie. The first section of game photos and titles are sharp - other photos of team bonding, etc. are very pixelated. Also, the titles' motion is jerky. I have found that getting "info" of the game action photos states the file size as 17.6 MB. That size is consistant on all the sharp photos. The team bonding photos only state 117kb in size from the "info" select. Also, today I tried importing the same game photos into iMovie that were sharp - they now only read at 117kb in size.
I am guessing at this point, the small file size is the cause of the very pixelated final output of the photos in the project. The questions are...
Is the pixelating of some of the photos due to the now small file size?
Why are the photos only entering iMovie in a small file size of 117kb?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I am the one who took the picutres with the Nikon D80 10.2 MP Digital SLR, as mentioned in the original message and am fully aware of the photos' resolution.
I loaded the photos from the camera to two places - 1st place was a folder on the desktop - the 2nd was straight to iPhoto. I like iPhoto for its photo organization features. I shot jsut under two thousand photos for the season - narrowed that selection down to approx. 300 photos fo rthe entire project. The photos were shot at the camera's's max. resolution. The info of the images size is 3872 x 2592. As I had mentioned, I tried many options of imports / exports, etc. All the photos are from the same source. I created a new iMovie project - imported a batch of the photos that originally were sharp at the beginning of the project and were 17.6MB in file size. The result was the pixelated 117 kb "finished product" in the new iMovie project. I even "reimported" the same photos into the clip pane of the original iMovie project of sharp photos - they also only loaded as 117 kb sized files. All the photos in the project were initially import through the media window within iMovie, including the series of photos that were sharp in the project.
The photos can be opened with iPhoto, Photoshop, Preview, and others. All the images are razor sharp.
I can only deduce that there is a preference setting of some kind or other cause somewhere that at some point between importing the first series of photos to the middle set of photos has changed resulting in the small pixelated photos in the project.
I appreciate your imput thus far. I look forward to any other ideas you may have.

  • Photos pixelating in iMovie slideshow

I am making an iMovie11 DVD with short video clips in the beginning and later it switches to photos on one-second flashing without transitions and with music in the background. Trouble is though, about half of the photos, even though they are hi-res, originals, pixelate like they are low-res. All photos were shot with the same Sony 828 and are roughly three megs each. When viewed individually, through iPhoto, they look great.
Any idea on what is happening or a cure?

That's absolutely right, the size of the incoming file not matter what it is will be crunched down to fit on the standard DVD-R size of 4.7GBytes. With video however it's dependend on the 'runtime' of the material. You cannot go over 120 minutes total including the menus and animated screens that appear at the beggining of some iDVD themes (those animations take up disk space). It's always a case of making a compromise to fit things onto that fixed sized disk.

  • IMovie 4 files pixelating in iMovie HD 603

It seems this import issue has been discussed a couple of times, still mine is different, so here we go.
Upon importing all old movies from iMovie4 (now rendering them to DVD as my previous (now dead) OS9 system couldn't run iDVD) to iMovie HD 603 and then to iDVD, there's one project that has been copied to the new HD, but comes up as Text files. Opening the original Project takes iMovie days. When then using the File converters from Lennart Thelander, the files are correctly recognized as DV, but are completely pixelated, nothing remains, both in Quicktime and iMovie.
Other projects (also from OS9-iMovie 4) imported fine, some required the help from the File Converters, but in the end they were all fine in iMovie6. Not this one project.
Any suggestions to what I can try next? Maybe find iMovie4 again to re-import it? Or a good iM6 trick? Any work-around?
    Y

    Hi Yves
Don't know if this is relevant but if one has photos in an iMovie project
then "Share/Export to iDVD" then OK to rendering. Much is lost.
(It even destroys the movie project = has to be re-done)
I don't use that export function to iDVD AT ALL.
    I close iMovie
    Open iDVD
Drop the movie icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    - Now iDVD will do the rendering instead and so much better -
    Yours Bengt W

  • How do I include the photos in a imovie project to the finished dvd so the users can have access to them?

I've included alot of old photos in an iMovie project and would like to include them on the finished DVD I create with iDVD. I woud like the users to be able to have access to them so they can print them, store them on their own computer or whatever they would like to do. How would I do this?

You do this by creating a DVD-ROM section on your DVD. See this explanation from iDVD Help.
Adding files to the DVD-ROM portion of a disc
You can let viewers copy files directly from your DVD by adding the files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc. These files are burned onto the DVD and are accessible when the disc is viewed on either a Windows PC or a Macintosh computer, but not a DVD player.
You can add any kind of file to the disc. For example, if your disc contains a slideshow, you can add the image files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc so viewers can download them to their own computers and print them. You can also add a file containing your movie production notes and other “extras.”
To manually add files to the DVD-ROM part of your disc:
Choose Advanced > Edit DVD-ROM Contents.
    The DVD-ROM Contents window opens.
Click Add Files, or click New Folder first if you want to create a folder to put the files in.
Browse to select your files or folders, then click Open to add them to the disc.
You can also drag files directly to the DVD-ROM Contents window. When you are done, just close the window.
When you add a file to the DVD-ROM portion of your disc, before you burn the disc the project contains just a reference to the location of the file on your hard disk, not the actual file. So if you delete a file from your computer or move it from its location after adding it to the DVD-ROM contents, you get a “File not found” message when you try to burn your disc. You can either remove these missing files from the DVD-ROM contents or find them on your computer and put them back in the original location so iDVD can access them.
As you add files to the DVD-ROM contents, be sure to check the DVD Capacity meter in the Project Info window to find out how many gigabytes of disc space are being used. The Capacity meter shows the disc space taken up by the video portion of the disc as well as the DVD-ROM portion.

  • Is there a limit to the number of photos added to iMovie?

I am trying to add more photo stills to a project but iMovie will not add more than the 495 I have in there. I know it is an enormous amount of still photos but in they are short in duration and I'd like to add about 130 more to complete this project. Any photos past this mark are simply being rejected/not added by the program no matter how many times I try to drag them over even one at a time. Is there a limit? Can I overcome this some how?

I would recommend that you put the photos that you need in order in an iPhoto album.
326 should be no problem. I have done that many or more.
To drag them into iMovie, open the Photo Browser in iMovie and look for the album. There should be an icon for the album. Drag the icon for the album into your iMovie Project. (rather than dragging the photos one at a time).
Since you are having sluggish behavior, I would recommend that you shut down iMovie, restart your Mac, and start over with a new project, unless you have too much work invested, in which case, try the old project first.
Here is a sample of a project where I dragged about 300 photos into a project from an iPhoto album.

  • Why does photo pane in imovie reset?

Just updated iphoto and imovie. When I started moving photos from the photo pane, I discovered everytime I delete a photo from the timeline that it would reset the photo pane to photo #1. Very irritating if you happen to be working with photo #1985. It this normal? What can I do to stop it?

Yes, that sounds normal. When you delete a clip in the timeline iMovie, iMovie selects the first clip in the photos pane. (Note that when a timeline image is selected, NO photo is selected in the photos pane, so iMovie has to select something.)
There is no relationship between a deleted timeline clip and any particular photo in the photos pane. So iMovie defaults to selecting the first available photo.
If the scrolling of the photos pane is a nuisance, consider importing your photos directly from iPhoto to iMovie. Drag them from the iPhoto window directly to the timeline. Then that will not effect iMovie's photo pane selection.
I find that method preferred anyway, in many respects. You can view many more photos in iPhoto, for example.

  • Creating photo slideshow in iMovie 09

    Hi guys,
I have been given the advice to create a photo slideshow in iMovie.
So far I have manage to sort out my photos and import them using iPhone and the Finder but am now up to the stage of putting the photos in the slide show.
There are quite a number of photos and I think by using the Ken Burns effect on every slide is a little overwhelming.
Is there any way I can use any of the other effects like just a simple fade-in?

AppleMan1958 gives you some good information. I have reviewed an earlier version of the slideshow feature of iPhoto on my website and have a short sample slideshow created using iPhoto.
Here is the link to my free photo slideshow software review of iPhoto.

I also provide information on creating a slideshow, choosing the music, etc.
    Good luck.

  • Attaching a photo to an iMovie theme

I am creating an iMovie project where I advertise a new fitness product.  I am using the Comic Book theme to make my project come alive.  On the first slide, where you write your name and attach a picture, I have a specific picture on my desktop that I want to use in the box.  How would I bring the photo to the slide and put it in the area made for it?  Please respond as soon as possible, thank you!!!

The quick and dirty way would be to simply drag the photo from the desktop and drop it in your iMovie Project at the comic book title (or transition) in your project.
However, if you later decide to move the photo off your desktop to another location, iMovie will not know where to find it and your project will be broken.
So I suggest putting the photo into a place where you are not likely to change the location. I would import the photo into iPhoto, and then you can access the photo from the Photo Browser in iMovie and drag it into your project.

  • How do it change the color of the background in a still photo in a imovie picture slide show

how do it change the color of the background in a still photo in a imovie picture slide show

LOL - I had the same problem.  Hidden in plain sight!  All I saw was Numeric, and thought "Duh! Of course it's numeric - it's a slider!"
I do think NI could do a much better job on this, perhaps with more informative labelling.  Slider Scaling or Scale Format might be better.  Also, since one can select the Digital Display by itself on the front panel, one should be taken directly to the digital display formatting when Properties is selected, instead of still having to change the dropdown. By selecting the digital display instaead of the slider, you're implying that you want to change its format only.

  • Low sound levels in Photo Booth and Imovie

I am a new Mac user and I am trying to record a short video to email using the built-in Isight camera. I have tried to use Photo Booth and Imovie and both of them produce videos with very, very low sound levels. You can barely hear it even when turned up to the max. I have checked the Sound preferences, and it is set to the built-in microphone, about mid-level. I've tried cranking it up to the max and with and without Use ambient noise reduction checked. It has no effect. How do I get a decent sound level? It is unusable at this point. I've updated my Software and repaired permissions, and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    daomun

Thanks for the response. I checked my midi audio settings and they are at the suggested rate. I called up an Apple support tech, and after trying a few things he basically said the internal mics are junk and go buy an external one. In the mean time, I've cranked up the sound levels to max, so I can hear it a little, but there is a ton of background hiss. I've done a web search and several people have reported this problem. so I think it might be something besides junk mics. Why do they install them if they are completely unusable? Thanks again. I'll try trashing the sound pref's too.

  • Photo slideshow on Imovie?

Is it possible to do a photo slideshow on imovie? I've uploaded all the files from iphoto and transfered them to imovie, but once i try to play the movie it will only play one clip at a time. Am i missing something? A response ASAP would be great b/c i'm trying to do a surprise video for my dad's 50th birthday! Thanks!

This may not really be what your problem is... but if it is, it is a really simple fix! When you click "play" to view the show, make sure you aren't just selecting one image and are clicked outside of a single photo box so that the whole show is selected.
Just happened to stumble across your post and remember being a little bit stumped by that at one point myself... good luck!

  • How can i get a still photo off an iMovie?

How can i get a still photo off an iMovie?

You do not need the QuickTime MPEG2 disk image unless you want to convert some MPEG2 clips. For photos, you don't need it.
You can buy it from Apple at this link, but like I said, you should not need it.

  • Is there any way to retrieve photos that were put in the trash can and then it was emptied?  Or is there a way to move photos from an imovie to iphoto?

Is there any way to retrieve photos that were put in the trash can and then it was emptied?  Or is there a way to move photos from an imovie to iphoto?

If you've emptied the trash, ehtn no. However if you have a backup, like Time Machine, or a recent backup copy of your photo library you could recover the photos from the trash.
The answer to getting a snapshot form iMovie depends on what version you have.
I should add it technically may be possible to recover the emptied trash, but if you really want to do that you would need to download a utility software that can attempt to recover deleted files. Do it soon before you start writing more data to that disk. At the moment I don't have a recommendation for such a program. Maybe someone else out there will offer suggestion.

  • Isight is not working on ichat and skype, however will work on photo booth and imovie.

My isight will not work on ichat or skype, saying that there is no camera connected. isight will work in photo booth and imovie. It shows up in the system profiler. Have tried resetting SMC. Help?

    (1) Here is how I would proceed to isolate the underlying problem that requires corrective action.
    • Shut down everything.
    • Then restart modem and allow its self-test to complete.
    • Then restart router or wireless access point (if you have them) and allow self-test to complete.
    • Then restart Mac.
    • Use  > Software Update... (Update your Apple software if not current.)
    • Then test Photo Booth or iMovie with no other apps else running to ensure they still work.
    • Then quit your test app and try iChat with no other apps else running.
    • If iChat works, quit iChat and try Skype with no other apps else running.
    (2) If iChat works but Skype does not,
    • Verify that you are using the latest version of Skype that is compatible with your OS X (10.5.8) Mac.
    • Update if necessary.
    • Then test Skype again with no other apps else running.
    • If Skype problems remain but your camera works with everything else, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
    Start here:  https://support.skype.com/
Or, click this link for help specifically related to Mac video calls.
You can also search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac.  The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.
If nothing else works, you can even sign in and ask for email help directly from Skype's Technical Support people.
    (3) If you still have trouble with more than one app, you may need to use Disk Utility to:
    • repair permissions,
    • repair your disk,
    • or even reinstall Mac OS.
If you reinstall OS X 10.5, use the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update to return to the latest version in one update step.

I had a similar problem, and i found that the photo was of very low resoluton. As a test I resized the image to a lrager resolution using photoshop CS4 and re saved it as JPG. I imported the new saved image and it seem to have fixed the problem.
