Your solution worked when applied to a administrative user account but did work with a student account.
I'm not sure why that is happening.
If you're on Vista or Windows 7, you could try setting the program to run permanently as Administrator, as described here:

If that doesn't help, my only suggestion would be to work through these tedious troubleshooting steps:

  • Error Opening Movie - The Movie Could Not Be Opened

Quicktime is giving me trouble and it's not giving me a reason why. It doesn't want to play movies dl'd from the internet. It tells me 'Error opening movie... The movie could not be opened.' The clip in question is a wmv. I tried opening the file in DIVx and iTunes but no dice; they didn't even recognize that I was trying to open a movie. I got the same problem with some films transferred from my old PC via a flash drive (not all, but some).
I am on a MacBook Pro that I just got this week; my first Mac. I am running OSX Tiger 10.4.8. 2.33 Ghz proc.
Please be gentle with the explanations; I know very little about computers.
Oh, also, in the DL'd files menu - you know, the one that pops up when you DL something - the file DLs with the icon looking like a blank piece of paper. Probably not important, but it sure doesn't look like something playable or executable.

"the file DLs with the icon looking like a blank piece of paper."
When the download window pops up type .wmv in the window before you click the download button or OK button.
If the above does not work then download the following FREE player:
    Flip4Mac
If the above player does not play the .wmv file then please post the URL and/or link of this file for us to test it out for you.

When I try to open a file in photoshop CS, Elements or Lightroom I get the message "Could not complete request because it is not the right kind of document"  This just started happening today. The only thing I have done differently is change my file handling to raw + jpeg on my Nikon 7100.

I downloaded camera raw 8.7 and I am now able to open my raw and jpeg files.   Thanks

  • Identify missing files ("The file could not be opened")

    Hello,
I purposely deleted photos outside of LR. The photos are still in the catalog. When I attempt to develop a photo in the catalog which I forgot was deleted outside of LR the message "The file could not be opened" appears after a short delay.
This raises the question of how to identify ALL photos in a collection where the source files have been deleted (or otherwise cannot be found) and to mark those items for deletion from the catalog, and subsequently delete them.
Basically I want to assure ONLY those photos that exist (on my drive) are in the catalog.
(I realize there are many instances where on wants to maintain items in a catalog that are archived on other media and not readily available, but that's not what I want here.)
I have LR 1.1 on WinXP Pro with ample memory and disk space.
Thanks in advance for all tips and pointers.

Did you try synchronize folders? Right click on the folder name and select. I haven't done this, but the help says it's supposed to deal with missing files as well as added files.

  • Message in Develop "The File Could Not be Opened"

My photos are in an external 500 gig hard drive. I am using a new iMac. In Lightroom when I go to the develop module and select an image I get a message saying The File Could Not Be Opened. I can not do any editing. I can open photos from the hard drive in other programs and edit them but not in the Develop module of Lightroom. I have 1.2 version. I have had this happen before when for some reason the computer could not find the external hard drive. But it is finding it fine.

  • "The file could not be opened" message

I'm a windows pc user with Lightroom 1.1. Today for the first time some of my library folders are in red font, and when I try to work on other images in develop mode I get a "The file could not be opened" message over the image.
I recently exported many of these images and then renamed some of the jpegs. But some that are inaccesable in lightroom I haven't exported or renamed.
Why did this occur and how can I get the files to open again so I can continue working on them?
    Thank you!

If the folders show in red, it means that they have been moved or renamed outside of Lightroom. If this is the case right-click on the red folder name and choose "Locate missing Folder". You can then browse to the folder.
If a file has been moved/renamed outside of Lightroom, the frame around the thumbnail will show a "?" at top right. Click on the "?" and click locate on the screen that pops-up.

  • The iTunes application could not be opened. The disk could not be read from or written to

I have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive. The hard drive seems to work fine with no issues whatsoever. However, whenever i attempt to open iTunes I get the following message "The iTunes application could not be opened. The disk could not be read from or written to."
Plz help...this is driving me off the wall!
    Rome.

I fixed it. I just moved my iTunes library from the external harddrive to the Macintosh HD and its working fine again with all the data, tags and what not in tact. Apparently there were a couple corrupt files in the external harddrive iTune library.

  • What is the best way to copy aperture library on to external hard drive? I am getting a message that say's "There was an error opening the database. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported".

What is the best way to copy aperture library on to external hard drive? I am getting a message that say's "There was an error opening the database. I am trying to drag libraries (with metadata) to external HD...wondering what the best way to do that is?

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

  • Could not complete the video frames to layers command because the file could not be opened

I recently learned to make gif images using KMPlayer and my Photoshop CS6, but today I hit a snag that I can't seem to get around. Normally I capture a scene from a show DVD I have in KMPlayer and then import the video frames into layers/frames in photoshop with no problem. Well today I went to do that, and captured the scene with what seemed like no problem (the small captured scene saved with no problem) but when I went to CS6 to import the video into layers, I got the error message "Could not complete the video frames to layers command because the file could not be opened". At first I thought it was the KMPlayer saving the files wrong, so I retried and got the same error message. Irestored the players settings back to a default and the file still wouldn't open in photoshop, and then I even tried uninstalling/reinstalling the player trying to get it to work, and then I thought it must be photoshop, because even scenes I had captured at an earlier day that worked perfectly fine when importing would not open.
What could possibly be causing this problem to occur. Should I uninstall/reinstall photoshop and see if that works, or am I doing something wrong?
The files I'm trying to import are AVIs as always, I even tried to capture scenes in other formats to no avail. What could be causing the problem?

I uninstalled an reinstalled photoshop totally and it didn't fix the problem either. I made a post on the KMPlayer's forum hoping for an answer but I haven't recieved one yet. I'm starting to think it's the kmplayer having a problem capturing, since I've started getting the error "could not import the file to layers because the file has no layers" sometimes in photoshop, but I'm still trying to work around in photoshop to see if the problem came from there.

  • The movie could not be opened

I have a file from a video security system and the file is 251.7 Mb in size (24 hours of video). As luck would have it, I cannot open the file from the one day that I need! On the Mac (using QuickTimePro ), I get the error message of "The movie could not be opened." I tranfered the file to a PC and there, I get the error message of "Error -2048: Couldn't open the file camera1.mov because it is not a file that QuickTime understands."
Is there any hope? Do I need to hexedit the file? Does anyone know of a program that I can use to salvage the file?
    Thanks for the help.

I get the feeling that we are barking up the wrong tree here. I sent the file to a friend that has the Apple QuickTimeMPEG2.component installed on his machine and he is getting the same error message when he tries to open it.
On my harddrive, the file has the generic QuickTime icon but it just won't open. iMovie won't even try to import the file.
I'm wondering if the file got damaged somehow? Is there a way to see if that is the case?

  • Quicktime movies corrupting randomly.  "The movie could not be opened."

    Hello,
Has anyone else encountered the Quicktime error where you have a perfectly functional file stored to a disk and then randomly, the file's icon will change from a still image from the movie to just the generic Quicktime file movie clip icon and then if you try and open the file you get the following error message:
The movie could not be opened.
The file is not a movie file.
Nothing was done to the file. Nothing was done to the disk. This can happen when no one is even using the computer. Once it happens, the file will not open or play at all. It just returns this error message. I've only seen this so far happen on ProRes HQ files. Doesn't matter if they are HD or SD. It is infuriating and is costing my facility a ton of money and time and making us seriously reconsider using Quicktime.
The only resource I've been able to find online that seems to be able to deal with this is:
    http://aeroquartet.com/movierepair/repair.html
However, because of the nature of the content that I work with I cannot send a clip out of house for repair and cannot pay $89 per file (starting price). I would really like to see a response from someone at Apple as to why this is happening and what fixes are in the works to prevent it.
    Thanks.

  • "The document could not be opened" type problem

My OSX 10.3.9 or G5 Hardware has recently been saying "The document could not be opened because (file) is in the Trash" The problem is, the file is not in the trash but in a folder on my HD or on the desktop. This problem happens when I double-click the icon for the file to open it (in InDesign), but seems to clear up when I drag the icon to the InDesign program to open it. Same thing happens with Photoshop documents. I've checked and neither of the files are in the Trash.

Look in your harddrive Library folder, for a folder named ScriptingAdditions. Inside of that folder there should be a file called Adobe Unit Types. There is also one for Quark, if you have a copy of Quark.
These files have to be there for you to double click to open these programs. It seems weird, because all of the other programs you can double click and open.
I noticed that these files disappear sometimes during a crash. After reinstalling mine, I made a copy of them, for quicker replacement.

  • "The document could not be opened. Bad file handle."  Error

    Greetings,
I have many operators opening documentation using acrobat reader 8.1.2. When the documents are opened, sometimes a change has to be done to the file. I use computer management to "kick" everyone out of the files, update the .pdf, and then they can re-open the file to see the latest and greatest version. The problem is, if not everyone is out of the file, I sometimes get a ""The document could not be opened. Bad file handle." error, and have to usually wait a period of time before it will let anyone in. I think it has something to do with the windows temp files, but am unsure. It's hard to ensure everyone is out of the document on time, as up to 50 people may be in it at the same time.
Is there perhaps a better way of publishing the new verison of the document?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • IPhoto The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported.

Have Yosemite installed on both my MBA and Mac Pro. iPhoto 9.0 running well on the MBA but when I tried opening iPhoto on my Mac pro get the message "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported." This is after I upgraded iPhoto.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While holding down the command & option keys boot into iPhoto and have it repair the Library.  If that does not work then download "Library Manager" and have that program work.  I found that better than the Apple program.

  • While trying to access my local network I get the message..."The page could not be opened because server cannot be found."  This, after updating to Yosemite and paying (again) for the server app.

while trying to access my local network I get the message..."The page could not be opened because server cannot be found."  This, after updating to Yosemite and paying (again) for the server app.

It's absolutley scandalous that a company with Apple's resources can let this happen.  They should have staggered the release by region rather than opening the flood gates.  The upgrade itself took me about 10 attempts to download it, and then I thought I was home free.  That was until it rebooted and won't activate.  It's over 2 hours now.
    Scandalous!
