Photos disappear in browser - Aperture 3.2

I was assigning a place to a photo in a project and while zooming in to move the pin in places the photo suddenly disappeared from the project and appeared in Photo Stream.  The project folder shows that there is  3 pictures in it ( number to the left of the folder icon ) however when I click on the project folder there is nothing in the viewer.
So - I turned off Photo Streaming and still no photo.  Also when I go back to places the places I setup are there but there are no pins.  Does anybody know what the heck is going on?

Here's an update to the problem:
I uploaded 8 new pictures to a project.  Photostream is on and they streamed to the cloud.  I went to places and assigned them a location.  Five pictures no longer are visible in the project and 3 of them are.  The five that are not visible do not show up on the map in plaes while the 3 visible ones do.  All of the pictures are in the cloud.  The number of pictures to the right of the project folder is still 8.

  • Aperture 3-- photos disappear when trying any adjustment

A series of RAW photos cannot be adjusted--anytime I try any adjustment the photo disappears and will not reappear until I go to EDIT and UNDO the attempted adjustment.
I have tried reprocessing all masters, etc., to no avail.
The camera and lenses are all the same I have used in the past and have no trouble making adjustments--just one series of photos.
Anyone with similar problems or suggested solutions? Help is sincerely appreciated!

Trying to get my head around this one. When you say the photo disappears, do you mean that it disappears from the browser?
The only way I have been able to replicate this is as below.
RAW is visible, with adjustments applied:
    RAW is not visible:
Make sure that the search field is clear.
    An obvious one I know...

  • All my Aperture and iPhoto photos disappeared

I was getting ready to upload photos to mpix.  I was exporting photos tweaked in Aperture 3 from iPhoto.  Because the picture file to which I was exporting was full, I cancelled the export and deleted the photos in the picture file (about 790 photos).  These had been imported from iMac through drop box.  I then resumed the export of 45 photos from iPhoto and noticed some were gone.  Not sure of the sequence next, but checked Aperture and it seemed like all my projects and photos (about 9000-11,000) were gone.  Went to trash and moved dragged the photos out of the trash to the pictures drop down file in finder.  I then restarted the computer and tried to open iPhoto and it seemed there was no iPhoto library there at all.  Very strange.
I have not backed up my macbook pro for about a week.
Can I restore my aperture and iPhotos library?

I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and was able to recover all the photos and albums, but not the slideshows and a recent calendar.  I would like to understand what happened though and how to avoid it in the future. So here are the answers to your questions.
"When you say the "picture file" was full, to what are you referring?"  Several weeks ago, I had transfered a large volume of photos from my older iMac using the drop file with the computers networked. I did not delete them from the drop file after importing them into my IPhoto and/or Aperture libraries on my laptop.  After this import, neither my iPhoto nor my Aperture libraries on the laptop were comprised totally of these imported photos though.
"An external drive?"  Although I also pulled some of the photos I had imported earlier from an external hard drive, I did not delete the files or otherwise connect (through a firewire cable) to the hard drive when I deleted the photos to prepare to upload the ones for printing.
Over the weekend when I went to export photos to this same file I decided to delete the hundreds/thousand or so, that were still there, so that I wouldn't have to search through them all to upload them to an online printing service.  After I deleted the photos in the drop box file, when I went back to iPhoto I notice some photos were gone. Where they had been in the album I had created to print, were the empty dashed line outline box.  I don't remember if I restarted the computer then or after I checked Aperture, but at some point, thinking that might restore things, I restarted the computer.  After restarting, that's when iPhoto was just completely empty.  No photos at all.  When I checked Aperture it was the same - all the photos were gone.
"And when you say the photos are gone, when you open Aperture, does it look like a brand new library? No images, projects, albums, etc.?" Correct.
"Were the images in your Aperture library referenced from your iPhoto library?"  Some but not all.  Some were downloaded directly from my camera to Aperture; some were imported directly to Aperture from the drop box.  Some I did import first into iPhoto.  Also some of the photos originally imported to Aperture I then moved to iPhoto to make a calendar.
I am very concerned about this.  Is it a software defect?  Did I do something wrong?  Is there a more efficient and less unstable way to get some, but not all of the photos from my iMac onto the laptop?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Problem syncing photos to iPad from Aperture with a merged iPhoto/Aperture library

I recently 'upgraded' to us Aperture instead of iPhoto. One of the features of this was that I could continue to use the old iPhoto library in Aperture, and it automatically configures to Aperture settings - and it works great in Aperture.
The problem is that when I come to sync photos to my ipad, I have the drop down options for iPhoto and Aperture. The Aperture option shows zero photos, and the iPhoto option shows all the complete list of all my photo event/projects (from both my iPhoto days, and the more recent stuff in Aperture); but anything that I have created since moving to Aperture is greyed out and not accessible.
Any clues as to how I can sync the new photos as well as the old ones?
    Thanks

Have you enabled the sharing and creation of previews in Aperture? That is one big difference between Aperture and iPhoto - in iPhoto it is impossible to disable previews, but in Aperture you can create previews selectively, see: Working with Preview Images
Check Aperture's Preferences > Previews settings for "New Projects automatically create Previews".
Then select the images with missing previews in Aperture in the Browser and use the command "Photos > Update previews".
If that is not the problem, the iPod Photo Cache or the Aperture library may need repairing or rebuilding, see these documents on how to repair the Aperture Library:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
First try, if a simple repair of the Aperture library will suffice, then delete the iPod photo cache folder. Make sure, that the backup of your Aperture library is current, before try any of this.

  • Can I save captions (labels under the photos in iPhoto) in Aperture?

Can I save captions (labels under the photos in iPhoto) in Aperture?

The captions are indeed in iPhoto replacing the scan number under the photo.
I see, you want to save the name of the image version - both Aperture and iPhoto allow you to create multiple edited versions of the same original image file and in iPhoto you are seeing the name of the image version belbow the thumbnail of the image, if you change the title n the Info panel.
But they are not saved with the photos when burned to disc, apparently (correct me if I am werong).
I don't know, which iPhoto version you are currently using. When you export photos (in iPhoto '11) or image versions (in Aperture 3) as files to a folder on the disk, you can use the version name/Title as the filename. Both applications let you chose, how the exported file will be called. In iPhoto use the following settings, when exporting your images, to use the title as the filename:
Select the images in the Browser.
    Use "File > Export"
Set the "Kind" to "Original" or "Current", depending on if you want to export the original or the edited version,
And then pick a format for the filename. To use the title/verson name as the filname instead of the scan number, set "File Name" to  "Use Title".

  • Burning photos to disc in Aperture...

I've spent a lot of time searching the Aperture User Manual on how to burn the photos I have in Aperture to a disc so that I can share them with friends. Can anybody help me? Is this even possible, because I haven't been able to find anything on the subject. Maybe I'm just using the wrong search terms.

I had wanted to do a yearly solid back up of 2009 photos to store away. Clean up the library and start fresh again. One disc(the Vault) said "library not found" and to create a new one, which I did and a new aperture with a blank browser comes up. The other(just the library was burned) the icon comes up but when I double click on it I get: Aperture cannot access this library. What did I do wrong? Lost forever? I then imported into iPhoto library and most came back some photos were "unreadible files"

  • When I imported my photos from iPhoto to Aperture, I appear to have lost all my keywords.  Can I retrieve them and, if so, how?

When I imported my photos from iPhoto to Aperture, I appear to have lost all my keywords.  Can I retrieve them and, if so, how?

    How did you import them?
Keywords are preserved if you use either the Import iPhoto Library or Show iPhoto Browser methods.

We need a little more information to be able to help.
However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture.
What kind of corruption? And when do you see it? All your images, or only some? Are the images distorted, discolored, or not displayed at all?
Are you shooting in raw? Is your library referenced or managed? Is your library on your system volume or on an external harddrive?
And it would help to know your MacOS version and Aperture version too.

  • Why do some black-and-white photos disappear in Mac Preview and Safari?

I sent a PDF to a colleague recently only to discover that he uses Mac Preview to view PDFs and not Adobe Reader. The unfortunate part is that, although full-color photos all appeared, small black-and-whites were inconsistent: some appeared and others did not.
Moreover, the same problem turns up when using Safari, though Google Chrome displays the PDF perfectly.
One reference point is that a full version of the PDF appears just fine in Preview and Safari. It's when the original is reduced or optimized that some of the small black-and-white photos disappear. Of course all photos appear in Reader, even when they PDF is reduced or optimized.
I have examined the small photos and have been unable to find any consistent trait among those that appear and among those that do not. I have experimented with them: layered and flat, with and without alpha channels, with and without profiles, as RGB and grayscale, with byte order for IBM PC and Mac, as TIFFs and JPEGs — in other words in every variation I could think of. I have used both Acrobat Pro 8.3.1 and Acrobat XI. Nothing I have tried has varied the outcome.
The obvious solution is to avoid Mac Preview and Safari, but I am planning to distribute a complicated project to a large audience and can't control what viewers they use.
Does anyone know what the problem is?

As I reported and you confirm, the things I tried had no effect.
You point to the compression and image settings, but that leaves the question why some photos and not others showed up: presumably they were all subjected to the same compression and image settings.
There are a great many possible permutations of compression and image settings, and I'm on deadline. Is there perhpas a combination of compression and image settings you recommend?
    Thanks!

  • Photo Orientation in Referenced Aperture Library

I am taking my Managed Aperture Library and moving it to Referenced. As I do so, I am noticing that many of the "portrait" shots in the library don't seem to maintain that orientation in the Finder. The portrait orientation shows up correctly when I look at the photo in Aperture, but when I go to "check" on the original file in the Finder, the icon of the photo and the photo itself when I open it with Preview revert back to "Landscape". Any thoughts as to why?
I have also noticed that when I export the "version" then the orientation is correctly saved with the file. When I export the "original" the orientation is NOT saved with the file.
Ideally I would like the "originals", which are referenced and consequently simply stored in the Finder, to correctly reflect orientation when I view them outside of Aperture, for example with Preview.
I am also aware that Aperture does not modify the original photo. But when I take a photo in "Portrait" orientation, my camera (and most modern digital cameras) record the orientation in the EXIF data in the photo. It is my understanding that this is how the Finder/Preview or any other application knows how to display the photo from an orientation perspective. Indeed, if I take a portrait photo straight from my camera and place it on the Mac Desktop, the orientation is correctly displayed. When I them import that photo into my referenced aperture library, the photo's orientation appears correctly in Aperture, but  if I look at the original in the Finder or Preview, the orientation is lost.
    Hopefully this makes sense.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I just ran into this issue and found your post from a search. Maybe too late for you, but for anyone else who finds this, here is the solution:
In the export dialog when exporting "Originals...", select "Don't Include IPTC" for "Metadata".
The behavior doesn't make any sense, but that's how I fixed my exports!

I could not find the solution in Aperture Help.
What is the command / option that makes the version name visible in the browser?

View->Metadata Display will show all the oprions and shortcuts.
Metadata display is very rich in Aperture and appears in a lot of different areas of the display. Getting familiar with it all will make your Aperture experience a lot more rewarding.
See Working with Metadata in the manual.

I recently moved all my photos from iphoto to Aperture. I had several iphoto books and cards in my project file. When everything was moved to Aperture I can't find any of the books or card projects. Are they gone or can they be restored?

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto

  • When I updated iPhoto, many of my photos disappeared.  The events are still there but no photos in them.  How do I get it back?

When I updated iPhoto to iPhoto 9.5, many of my events with the photos disappeared.  The "events" are still there but there is nothing inside.  I have been unsuccessful in trying to get the photos back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes - backup first in case something goes wrong
And if the iPhoto first aid does not resolve things download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use its rebuild command to create a totally new library leaving the current one untouched if you still need it
